  • Most common are two ways of performing Khatra: forward or forward/sideways. What makes them different? What is the benefit of each? Accuracy is the same, arrow speed is different.

That was the most succinct and easy to understand explanation of khatra that I've yet seen. Thank you so much for this, I've been trying to get it right with my Korean bow for a while now, but end up casting the arrow in a direction other than what I intended (usually down). I'll be sure to get some practice in with this if I make it through this hurricane without too much damage.
I feel like you have such a wealth of knowledge to share on Asian archery, and would really appreciate if you shared your videos in the ATARN facebook group more often. At the very least, would you mind my posting them if you don't want to?

Some bows don’t like khatra, but if you do it right you don’t apply force. So it should be fine.

Is it hard to achieve a working kathra? I mean, not everyone has speed measuring devices to confirm that their action develops in the supposed way.
I wonder (sorry if i'm ignorant) , if kathra is only the tilt of the bow, or is it also including the non full draw completed with a backlashing release ? To me it seems that doing both the tilt and backlashing release would add up more to the arrow speed.
BTW, Thank you for releasing very informative videos on archery.

many opinions out there about that topic. mostly they say that the tilt is the khatra, others say that the snap release is part of it. for me that all does not matter. I do khatra and snap release, as it is (for me) the most efficient way to shoot an arrow :) and no, it is not hard to achieve

I use side kathras only turning my wrist slightly to the opposite of the arrow when released and keeping the bow up right with no forward kathras ,while shooting Eastern or Turkish style . I like a bow with a rounded handle best for this . I have started using forward with side kathras and cannot explain how the arrow landed directly in center line flat to the ground behind a 6x8 back stop without making a hole in the back stop ,it was a wackey shot which I can't explain ,I didn't even get a slight glimpse of the arrow in flight, maybe it's totally phenom lol

Hi, thanks for your videos, i have a question; is khatra effecting accuracy ?
while i am tyring to do khatra, my arrows going right side of the target( i am left hand), without hatra my arrows going left side of target, is it normal ? if it is not do you have any suggestion for doing it true, because without khatra i always impacting my arm with my bow string.

Why to move a bow? I want my bow stable to achieve consistent release. After shot I dont care what movement bow does itself. I only care to not drop it. I understand when using olympic bow with weight and sling, that bow continues in motion after shot and bow is spinning on sling and weight causing to lean it forward. But why to imitate this after-shot movement of bow. I hold bow just against my hand to not make any unwanted move. The bow after shot has tendency to continue fly forward and fall down. Not to lean forward like olympic bow with weight.

Marek Marek kathras can add speed and it can make your arrow fly straight on horseback archery(sorry for bad english)

Khatra is the way to stabilize the arrow flight without modifying the arrow spine, meaning in theory you could shoot any arrow with wide range of spine. The technique is 100% historical and based on military technique of nomadic archer that used thumb draw, right side placement and rapid shooting.
