There are important differences between each Schnauzer breed, which is motly because they have similar, but different ancestry. Standard Schnauzer to Affenspinscher, Miniature Poodle, Miniature Pinscher or to Pomeranian and the Giant Schnauzer was most likely developeded by crossing the Standard Schnauzer with Great Danes, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Boxers and Bouvier des Flandres.

Lost my minSchnauzer recently. Considering a replacement near Christmas; however, stuck between standard Schnauzer and Airedale Terrier. Both seem to be pretty good dogs.

I am sorry for your loss... If you are looking for a bigger dog with high energy and with brave, intelligent and alert temperament, you will make no mistake with neither of these two. The Airedale is slightly bigger. While both are intelligent and energetic, the Airedale is known to be more independent, whereas the Standard Schnauzer is often more protective and alert.

I have a red miniature schnauzer and live in an small apartment. Would a standard schnauzer get along with a smaller companion and in an apartment?

If your current dog is okay with other dogs, than there should not be a big problem with that. Of course, you must socialize them together from the puppyhood. And provide them with enough exercise, so they can live happily in smaller apartment.
