LittleBigPlanet was one of the PS3's most important games. Here's why. (Remembering)

  • In 2008 the PlayStation 3 was struggling to move units and stay competitive with Microsoft. Sony needed to get their big games out. Not only that, but they needed to be good, and draw serious attention. LittleBigPlanet was one of those titles. Join me as I experience what the young ones call a serious "throwback" and basque in this beautiful pool of nostalgia. I'm drowning and I hope no one saves me.

    i think lbp 3 problem is it just didnt have any of media molecules ambition. It was an extremely safe sequel...
    lbp2 was trying some really crazy stuff, i think it might of been a bit too much but still it was a phenominal game. But the original in all it's simplicity will still always be my favourite.

    • @wx39
      @wx39 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're 100% right. LBP3 was creatively bankrupt.
      Instead of doing anything new, they decided to do "MORE". More layers, more characters, more power ups. I legitimately can't think of anything that you could do in LBP3 that couldn't be done in 2 with existing power ups and dlc.
      It also doesn't help that LBP3 was riddled with bugs. The online connectivity was shit. Menus took forever to load. Your save could be corrupted randomly. It was trivial to go out of bounds.
      There was definitely ambition but it was spent in the wrong places.

    • @sertayeee4414
      @sertayeee4414 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LBP3 did some really crazy stuff, 16 layers, lets you make your own powerups, added new character types and more.
      I think ambition in the face of a deadline and limitations is what caused problems for LBP3, it tried to be massive step forwards just like LBP2 was but because it was split between two systems and was on a tight schedule, it released buggy and broken, and it was unable to achieve its potential due to needing to be on both PS3 and PS4, being unable to actually put the PS4's extra power behind its new tools.
      I think a thing many people overlook is that LBP2 was also a pretty buggy game especially on launch, but it wasn't disastrously buggy like LBP3 was, BUT LBP2 received a few delays before release, it was able to be released in a good state.
      it is likely that LBP2 would have been in LBP3's sorry state if it had not received those delays.
      LBP3 was announced in June 2014 and then released in November 2014, 18th for NA, 26th for EU, DEC 4th for JP,
      and it was developed by Sumo Digital, a company which commonly does spin-offs or outsourced projects.
      It is very telling that Sony pushed LBP3 out before it was ready, wanting it out for Christmas.
      I do not think the problem with LBP3 was a lack of ambition or ideas, it was probably just a lack of time and of course MM's signature charm.

      They just need to figure out the identity of the game. LBP has such an impactful personality and charm and im getting none of that from dreams. Im sure it will be mindblowing and ill sink hundreds of hours into it but ill kill just to have that charm back. LBP2 still had it but LBP3 lacked it too. The soundtrack better be as funky and varied as the first one, too.

  • @wx39

    I only recently started playing LBP1 & 2 again. There's a definite charm and the IP has staying power.
    The issue is that the gameplay all began to feel same-y in community levels. Everything was either poorly constructed or copies of other levels. Just platforming, nothing really new or challenging.
    Those issues became exacerbated with LBP3's creative bankruptcy, instability, and networking problems.
    Sumo Digital was ambitious, but just decided to make everything "more" rather than truly innovating. More layers, power ups, and characters.
    It's hard to think fondly of a game that removed random lobbies, would corrupt your save unpredictably, was slow to load, and couldn't maintain a connection between two players.
    At launch, LBP3 really only had the story and community levels going for it. That is if you could stand to wait 2 minutes for the community levels menu to load, 2 minutes for any single page to load (even if you only scrolled down three options), then waited 2-5 for the level itself to load.
    LBP1 & 2 were never so bad. Sure, there was loading, but menus would take seconds, and a level could be loaded in ~1 minute as opposed to LBP3's 2-5.
    I vividly remember putting down the controller and watching a bit of TH-cam while waiting for levels to load.

    I wholeheartedly disagree with what you're saying at 2:55 about LittleBigPlanet having poor staying power. I bought LBP1 and LBP2, but refuse to buy LBP3. The reason being that I thought I wanted LittleBigPlanet 2, but ended up absolutely hating it. Yet LittleBigPlanet 1 being my favourite video game of all time, and I game a lot, so that's saying something. I could never work out the reason I hated LBP2, it never made sense. Then all of a sudden it hit me. LittleBigPlanet was a platform game, whereas LBP2 was a platform for games as the E3 trailer goes. I hated that it was so anarchal, that I couldn't predict what kind of gameplay I was going to have in a community level, where I'd play some shitty (excuse my language) 2D minigame when really, I wanted to jump all of the place, bounce on enemies, collect bubbles and be entertained by fascinating stories and story-themed levels. Not just random minigames for whatever reason.
    That's why LBP2/3 didn't stick for me. For LBP1, platforming was the norm, and it was uncommon/rare to be hit by another kind of level, which would be a pleasant surprise. Whereas in LBP2, it was complete anarchy, despite the level labels for community levels whether it was a platform level or something else, those labels did not help much. And it was too much.
    Not to say LBP2 is a bad game, it was a brilliant game, but not to my taste. After a couple discussions with fellow friends who also loved LBP1 but didn't buy the remaining LBP games, they had a similar opinion that LBP2 and after was too much.
    I hope Media Molecule don't follow the same mistake with Dreams, but tbh, after seeing all of their pre-alpha twitch streams, I think they're fully aware of what happened with LBP and wiser for it.
    Soz for the lecture aha, just had to get my opinion out there.

    The reason why Little Big Planet 3 bombed was because not only did it release on the same day as both Grand Theft Auto V PS4 and Far Cry 4, it was also the broken mess of the 3 as well sadly. My friend's game was so glicked it took 2+ minutes for the popit to open up... It immediately turned off me and my 4 buddies from playing and we pretty much went over to GTA that actually did work...

    I also think that LBP 3 failed because they messed with its fans with the dumb LBP karting game, and the 3rd game didn’t offer a drastic difference like the 2nd did.
    The 2nd one was so great because of the new tools it offered.

    I didnt realize how much i loved this game until probably years later Great music, cute gameplay, new layer of gameplay with the 'ace all levels' trophy. I really loved how the voice acting, with the exception if narrator, was gibberish, for it forced you to use your imagination. The voice acting and cutscenes/story is a big part of why i thought lbp2 & 3 weren't as good.
    I remember i got the game from the free downloads sony offered after psn got hacked. I googled the game and thought it looked like a dumb waste of time, but boy was i wrong. My nephew watched me play; he really liked it too. I was thinking I'd like to play lbp1 again. I wish media molecule could have stuck with the other two.
