  • In this video, we take a look at what flaps do, when to use them, and how they are different depending on the type of aircraft.

12:30 The gaps between the wing and the flap also keep vortices from forming decreasing the stall speed.

Lots of real-world theory here but MSFS flaps are simulated as flat plates angled (or not) into the airstream, completely independent of the wings. Think of it as sticking your hand out of a speeding car window and rotating it. That simple modelling works ok for big high-drag flaps angled into the airstream but doesn't have much to do with real wing/flap aerodynamics. I've been modelling flaps for gliders in FSX/MSFS for many many years and have to deal with the limitations, e.g. negative flap in MSFS does *not* reduce overall drag (think of a flat plate in the airflow, not related to the wing: zero incidence is always minimum drag). What you describe is 100% correct for real wings - in MSFS the flaps are not related to the wings, so negative flaps do reduce overall lift (by adding a negative lift component) but have no effect on the induced drag of the actual wing (as the lift of the main wing remains unchanged, ignoring pitch changes which are something else). But for high-lift high-drag positive-only flaps in most MSFS aircraft, used only for takeoff/landing, the MSFS approximation is ok.

Video on the prop speed, explained in the great details? Pretty please?
And thanks a lot for the channel! Great content, really apricate the effort you're putting in.
