Great video!
When a user selects the PBI report link from the subscription email, is the dynamic filter still applied to the end user? It's hard to test when you're the report owner and can see all data
Excellent question. If someone clicks the report link in the email, it will take them straight to the report (without filters applied). If you desire for people to only see certain info when they open the report, that will be a RLS (row level security model). It essentially obtain the login info for the person then applies it to the model.
Is there an option for sending a different page to different groups of people?
Yes definitely! When setting up the subscription if you include the page name in the data list you create for each email, you can pass that to the select page list
Can we use Distribution list email address with data filtration and send email once
I like the thought process. To get this to work I think you'll have to create a separate process where the DL is someone ingested into your data model, then then data model parses the email addresses into a table, then the dynamic subscription can use that parsed table.
@@PowerBIBro thanks for quick response, however we have tried the solution but it is sending multiple times email. Eg if DL has 10 emails then the user is getting 10 times the e-mail
Sounds like you're sending it to the DL 10 times. You won't be able to use the DL list itself. To get around this, you'll need to artificially create the DL as a table of individual emails in the data model. Or.. if you're using AD to store your DLs, there is a way you can connect to AD and extract the individual listing of each member of a DL. Then in your data model, call this process routinely to automatically perform the above extraction. Hope this helps steer your correctly and I'm thankful for your comment!
q)Lets say i have a dynamic RLS setup implemented for one of my report .But in dynamic subscriptions i am not specifying that. Only emails are showing to be send. In that way the end user see all data? i mean RLS would bypass?
Great question, here’s what I believe will happen but I suggest you test and validate the assumption.
If you setup the subscription, the RLS will obtain your credential and it will be applied. If someone else sets up a sub, their credential will be utilized in the RLS. So the sub passes the creator’s credential to RLS. If you need to pass in a RLS value for a sub you create, then add an additional filter correlated to the RLS model.
Can you select multiple filter values, so I could send one PDF with filters of Dept1 or Dept2 that would contain both departments in one PDF?
Hi, for this to work you’ll need to setup a new lookup table in your table which aligns one value to both dept 1 and dept2, then filter the subscription on that one value
@@PowerBIBro ah, that makes sense. Thank you
You bet! Thanks for the question!
Hey Bro, again a very usefuk video, very good explained.. and you raised up a question : how and under which licence is it possible to manage different projects for different clients in Power Bi ? Do you have an idea ? I dont have the full PBI Service so I can´t check myself.. What I´m actually looking for is to build for different clients their own dashboards but within my PowerBI environment... any idea how I can realize this ? Thanks so much !
Great question, there are multiple avenue to go down and the decision will depend upon your client base and budget.
Check out this link..
powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/
Depending on where you want to start and your billing model, you could do a per/user cost @ $20 a month. So either you pay for for your customers licenses or they have to buy one to use what you build. I'd probably start there then scale out.
Would probably be a good idea to take the next step and contact MSFT sales via the link to confirm pricing best for your end goals.
Is it possible to filter several filters at the same time for the same PDF? Is it possible to apply several values for the same filter in the same PDF?
A very simple use case can be that the user wants to have in his email every week the data of the previous week, based on a data_date field. How can this weekly subscription be configured in which the user wants to have in his email the PDF with the last 7 days report at the same time and for 2 FIELD1 values at the same time? That is, sending a single PDF with the 7 days and with the 2 values, not 7x2=14 PDFs/emails.
Absolutely! In the "Map my data" section, simply keep clicking the [+ Add Filter] button to add more filters across multiple fields.
really don't dig the limit of 50 subscriptions per report. Seems arbitrary and pretty much makes it useless for large orgs
Great point and I agree. Thankfully MSFT is continually updating Power BI and hopefully this enhancement will come down the road.
