Ford F-150 - Stuck On Fast Idle / Hard Start When Hot

  • Come along with Eric O. and have a look at this 1994 Ford F-150 5.0 that won't come off a fast idle and is hard to restart when it is hot. We also get to play with the OBDI option of our new Actron CP9690 Elite Auto Scanner. Based on symptoms along this was a pretty easy one to diagnose to be honest with you but we still need to verify before blasting the parts cannon at it.

Thank you so very much for this video. I have a 1996 bronco with 5.0 . It started high idle , 1500 high . I couldn't get my hands on a scanner that would even power up when connected much less show a code . So I replaced the idle control valve no help.
I replaced the throttle position sensor no help ... then the mass air flow sensor no help .
Then watched your video... went back to the shop and disconnected the temp sensor and jumped the connector to closed circuit and bo-yow... purring like a kitten.
Thank you so much for your help.

Wow, obd 1 system still kicking. I had an old 1988 F-150, great truck, loved the interior layout and the body style of it. Bought it used at 75k, drove it until it had 150k or so, good ole 5.0 302. The straight six 4.9L was probably the best from that era, a legendary motor for sure.

Hi Eric..greetings from the UK..loved your story about your son hiding all the nuts and bolts around the garage..lol... and I love watching you fix stuff. Reminds me of a story about when I was around 8/9 left to watch my dads garage while he went to the parts store. As I had been helping him all summer break, he left me and my dog in charge for about 20 mins ,unfortunately he had previously showed me how the sprayer worked and he even let me have a go on some cars from time to time. So being eager to keep busy I practised my paintwork skills by spraying the dog met silver. I got the biggest walloping and was sent to bed early. It took mum and dad hours using paint thinners to get it all off. To this day I blame him for showing me how the sprayer worked...:).I love your channel and wish I had been able to carry on with the garage when he passed away but was too young. Also hope you don't mind me saying this, but you do sound like Michael Keaton as Beetleguise..lol..its a good voice by the way. All the best from the UK...cheers Bill

I salvaged my 87 2.9L Ranger last year. Hated to see it go, but it was time. I remember OBD1 like it was yesterday. A service call I had one time for a 94 GMC P3500 7.4L RAN PIG RICH. Had to change plugs in the street! This was in L.A. finally got the vehicle going by jumpering the ECT Connector with a wire. It ran, with instructions to the driver to have his shop change the coolant sensor. Great Video!

Thanks in advance and hope fully you guys understand me have a good day

    • @spelunkerd
      @spelunkerd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@homeroaguilar6163 The symptoms sound a lot like a vacuum leak, which would be easy to verify with a scan tool and a few basic tests. Unfortunately there is broad variance in aftermarket MAF sensors and your replacement sensor could be part of the problem. Before replacing any more parts I'd try to get access to a scan tool with live data for basic diagnostics. Failing that, and before replacing any more parts I'd get pro advice. Professional diagnostics are often valuable and relatively inexpensive compared to the parts swapping game.

Hi Eric. Back in 86 I bought a new Ranger. It was the first year for port fuel injection 2.9. The S10 still had a carb and went to the TB fuel injection in 87. Where Ford was ahead on the FI game at that time I had to have it for that reason and to experiment/learn on before the customer ones came in. Where their was no data stream on those until the early 90's as you showed it was all hands on meter/scope tests for diagnosing issues. That was more time intense did like the challenges to be diagnosed/fixed right the first time! Their KOEO and KOER scanner tests were kinda helpful but most times not. Don't know if you worked on a few of them yet, new to your channel. A quick tale from back then. Had one guy who got a diagnosis/estimate from me and one from another shop. Totally different repairs listed between the 2. He asked who is right here. Told him to chose who he wishes. Still a great customer, I can picture you getting that on occasion too. Semi retired now, still have that Ranger in great cond. Very nice video's and work you do, wont leave such a long comment next time. Had to chime in on this one.

Hi Eric a good trick for keeping the coolant in the system is put a small plastic bag in the radiator filler neck then put the cap on tight this covers the expansion tank check valve in the cap. When you remove the sensor or fitting a small amount will come out then a vacuum is created in the system & coolant stops flowing........Just dont forget to remove the bag or you will have a 50 psi cooling system pressure test.....take it from me that doesn't end well OPPS!!!!!!!!

You just reminded me that I have an EEC-IV adaptor with my old Autoxray scanner! Wish I could hook it up to the Autel, but the adaptor plugs into the top of the old one, like the Actron (like an old computer TV screen with the 2 locking nuts).
I don't recall having that many PIDs last time I was in our '86 Grand Marquis - I remember seeing codes, and the KOEO/KOER tests. Been a long, long time - probably over 10 years now. Haven't changed ANY sensors in that car in the 14.5 years / 170k miles we've owned it - time for some tests, lol! She runs great, so I live by the old adage, " If it ain't broke, don't fix it". :D
Glad you posted this. I was brushing up yesterday on Paul's premium site on testing VR sensors, and today I get a refresher from you on thermistors. Trying to make this stuff stick, and it finally is, mostly. Tough learning as you age - not as easy as it was 26 years ago when I was in high school, lol. Thanks for the refresher!

I have a similar scanner. It's a BOSCH 1350 and looks very similar to that scanner. The connection is not removable and only does OBD2. But it has the ability to pull OBD2, SRS and ABS codes and pids. It was very usefull to me when the ABS light came on my Cobalt. I used it to pull the C0050 code (R.R. WSS). I did some diagnosis and found the sensor to be bad. I replaced the hub as the WSS is built into the hub assembly. That scanner saved me $100+ for diagnosis and labor as I did everything.

Nice job. That truck reminds me of my Dad's 85 F-250. It had the 5.0 EFI with the EEC-IV computer. The interface connector for it was in front on the passenger side and you could hook a trouble light to it and it would flash trouble codes. I think they had a "scanner" for them, star or something like that.

Hey Eric, what you demonstrate quite successfully is the value of experience. Some of your diagnostic computers seem to already be on their way to 'expert systems' that look at the data, find anomalies and suggest 'fixes.' The next step will be for the technician to input the make, model and year and the 'symptoms,' have the device examine a database of known issues, compare the live data to known 'good' outputs and suggest where the problem lies and how to confirm the diagnosis and make the fix. It's come a long way from the 'swap and swindle' shops of the 'good ole' days.

Nice to see the EEC-IV work! I'm tooling around with a 1994 full sized Bronco myself. Very sweet truck. Used to have an 89' Bronco II that had a blown coolant temp sensor with the opposite problem. It always reported to the computer that the temp was maxed! The BWD one from the parts house was also DOA. Wound up going to U Pull and getting one off a Ford Limo Town car!

I had a very similar problem with a VW Squareback. Those had an early form of electronic fuel injection and mine started to run like the choke was stuck on, like this truck the idle was fast, and it was burning WAY too much gas. I figured out it was the temperature sensor. Well, that sensor was $80, that was a LOT of money back in the late 70's, plus it would have taken a couple of weeks to get. Now I knew what the resistance of the sensor was when the engine was hot, so I went down to Radio Shack, bought a 2 pack of resistors for 18 cents, bypassed the sensor with one of them, and then the car ran like the choke was stuck open. A little slow to start when cold, but otherwise fine. I never did replace the sensor.

Just the video I needed. My son has been having problems with his F250 with the 4.9L engine stalling and getting poor gas mileage. He has replaced most everything. I am going to order one of the Actron CP9690 scanners using your link and see if this or the MAF sensor is causing the stall after the truck is warmed up. It has left him stranded twice, once a couple of years ago and last week.

Great video. Had the same issue on my '95 Z28 when I brought it out of storage this spring. Found that the Coolant Sensor was reading 40 below (was 60 outside). I agree with what you said about the ECM's not having the logic to ignore faulty sensors on these "older" vehicles. When I (finally) got the car started it ran like crap but idled -- do you think the ECM would detect the car was about to overheat and turn on a cooling fan? NOPE! It thought is was still 40 below when the car was about to go into nuclear reactor core breech. Could have been bad news if I walked away and let the car idle for a bit!

Great logic. Had an 89 GMC 5.7 TBI that did the same only when hot, started normal. Rich/misfire when cold. Apparently not the temp sensor as I replaced it with same results. Might resort to that scan tool for more data.

I had a '94 Ranger with...issues lol. But it was OBD1 and I remember having to use an OBD1 scanner. After I finally got rid of that nightmare (literally ended up just signing the title to the first person that could haul it away. No cash changed hands) I swore up and down that every vehicle from now on MUST have OBD2 lol.

Hi Eric, Love you videos , watch and thumbs up them all the time. This video really got my attention as I drive a 1989 F150 300 6 cylinder 5 speed and I've had a similar issue as the pickup in your video, that is, idle fluctuates from about 1100-1450 back and forth. So far I've replaced the coolant temp sensor, the IAC, and the TPS. also removed, cleaned , checked the EGR, smoke tested for vacuum leaks and the symptoms stayed the same. Sooo, I bit the bullet and bought the Actron 9690 hoping to access all the data that you accessed BUT of course it doesn't have the pages or at least I can't access the pages that you go to in this video that show sensor data. I wrote down the steps you took and tried several times but the information just won't come up on the screen. If you know of something that will help to access the sensor data for my truck please let me/us know. My 9690 seems to have current software, burn date is 03/12/19 and the SW ID is 0b0b. Thank you in advance.
