I absolutely love these old B&W series: Mr Wong, Charlie Chan, Mr Moto, Sherlock Holmes, Hitchcock, I could go on & on. Great stories, solid actors, wonderful sets & mood, cars as big as boats, oh the fashions of that age, all in shoe string budgets. What’s not to like? Thank you my friend for sharing these timeless gems. Many Blessings 🙏🇺🇸
I get so much pleasure from these delightful old movies. They are, I suppose by today's standards amateurish and corny and obviously produced on a fairly strict budget but I cannot think of a more pleasant way to pass an hour or so. Today's 2 hour epics are tedious, boring and difficult to watch and enjoy. Thank you so much to whoever has made these films available.
i think it rather good that films which cost peanuts give me such pleasure, compared to some of today,s multi-million dollar flops, and there are PLENTY of them
I also fully agree. It is just sad to me how many of these great movies are so unknown and underappreciated. Especially series like this, where Boris Karloff does a masterful acting job showing great care and respect for the character. It is sad to think they likely would never be made today or would be turned into such an action packed flick that so much of the subtleties that make these movies so special would be lost.
Only 10 years after this movie, Marjorie Reynolds played William Bendix's wife on the Life of Riley TV series. She's so cute in movies of this era. Love her voice. Love Karloff in anything. THANKS, PizzaFlix.
I have always loved watching the old black and white movies of the 1930's , 40's and 50's weather they be suspense , comedy, or horror . My favorites are the " who done it mysteries like Holmes, Chan , Mr. Wong, others like them as they really kept you guessing till the very end. So many twists and turns . I'd think " oh he or she did it" untill they would wind up murders in the next scene or so. These are the kind you cannot take a break while watching unless you wait for the commercials or pause them if they are on video! They are getting to scarce on cable or satellite so thank you for making these available.
I didn’t know that remote controlled radios were made available to the public as early as the late 1930s. Fascinating history (beginning with Tesla)! Thank you for such great uploads, PizzaFlix! Am so enjoying these Mr. Wong Detective films.
Enjoy your site very much,,,I also enjoy the Antiques via automobiles, the set decorations, pottery glass, decorations,,the art deco features. Thank You R. Everett Fadden
Whenever I'm sick, depressed, chilly or just needing it, I put on Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto or of course, Mr. Wong and within the first four movies I can fall dreamily asleep😁👍💖
They might be far too used to newer movies. Some people find 1930s - 1950s movies _painfully boring._ Why? I guess they're constantly expecting things to be over-exciting, like an action movie that's more of a theme park than just a story.
I get so much pleasure in watching the films you have posted and this was no exception, good cast and decent storyline. I am not sure how I will adjust to watching a modern film. Many thanks
Love the Wong & Chan movies which I find oddly comforting. I've watched them so much their lingo entered my daily speech. & I've noticed several interesting things plus peculiarities: Det. Street's first name is Sam in at least one Wong film but Bill in others. & in The Fatal Hour Wong says he was only able to help w/past cases due to their association w/the Orient. But in the prior Mr. Wong Detective, zero Chinese/Asian aspect, correct?
@@melmack2003 I have to admit it's pretty hard to 'suspend disbelief' and accept him as a Chinese detective with that voice. Sometimes I wonder if they just should have made him a mild mannered British detective (Mr. Belvedere?) instead of trying to cash in on the success of the Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto series. Oh well, it is what it is, and I still enjoy the movies. :)
The comments are almost as much fun as the film. Why can't people watch these film's for what they were. Entertainment at a time when most things were allowed to be said and done. Anyone would know that the older film's would have reference and inference not liked or allowed today. Just watch the film and comment about the film. Not the undertones, Please.
Reminded me of idiosyncrasies in The Shining. When Jack Nicholson meets the hotel manager and gets a long story of the hotel’s dark history the manager never takes his elbows off the desk. He has to contort his hand expressions to keep them there. Maybe this actor had some character trait in mind. And like here, I found one inconspicuous spot where the elbows came off.
Love these old B+W movies and TV shows. Sherlock Holmes. Wong, Chan, Hoppy, Highway Patrol, Tombstone Territory, Gunsmoke, Texan, Deputy.... Lot of these you can see on MEtv, Grit, FEtv, INSPtv, Starzwesterns
Marjorie looked so much better as a blonde. Contrast this look with "Midnight Special"- a decent film about modern train robberies with John King. She was also a blonde in "Holiday Inn," probably her most famous role.
Haha It amazes me how much Police Officers back then contaminate their own crime scene so much before the CSI unit has a chance to even dust for fingerprints. How could they solve any crime without the help of Mr Wong?
I doubt that they even had a CSI unit, back then! Certainly a fingerprint person...probably, all of them could do fingerprints! Nothing was specialized like it is today! Everyone was versed in all Police duties.
Lol. What do you know about this guy. Not much. Then proceeds to say he is a gambler, smuggler, crook, everything. Love this series. Please keep sharing. God bless
The apartment clerk at around 41:50 is played by the same actor, Tristram Coffin, who's perfect as the "good" Dr. , Dr. Foster I believe, in The Corpse Vanishes w/Bela Lugosi (as well as appearing in many other films & at least one TV show). He is one of few I'm aware of who co-starred with both Lugosi and Karloff, both well-known for their famous portrayals of Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster, respectively.
This Mr Wong series sure used it's actors well, as they all are in these movies all of course are in different rolls and this series is one of my favorite series
The "crime" of smuggling can only occur under unfree trade. Under free trade it would be indistinguishable from any other free trading action. - JZ, 20.9.20.
The fact that there is no super heroes representing gender swinging misfits from Berkeley or Harvard says a lot. A story plot and a battle of virtues. Society is the victim along with some standing persons who have justice in mind. I believe even in our so called modern era we can learn a lot about the human character and values.
Someone slipped up, Mr Wong has staining to his hands, face & front of neck but the back of his neck remains pale, you can see the difference from his jaw line down to his collar
Apparently, wireless remote controls for radios were introduced for consumers just a couple years prior to this movie. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_control
My grandfather had a remote control for his TV in the 1960’s. He had to move his chair close to the TV as the cord that connected it to the TV was only 4ft long. He was so proud of that remote control, nobody else was allowed to touch it.
Imperial (not emerald) jade is most rare; Ming Dynasty 1368-1644. Original carved pendant shown would reveal that, but it turned into a rough chunk (continuity lapse) joined by other pieces, which could not be identified by a dynasty, thus far less valuable, but still be rare imperial. Have seen all 6 episodes. Sure won't miss Grant Withers. Learned he was once married to Loretta Young and teamed 9 times with Ford/Wayne, ending his career at 54 "so unhappy" per his suicide note.
Fine actor as he was, I don't think Karloff was right for this role and I find it incredible that audiences would accept that a detective Captain would be allowed to have his girlfriend alongside him on every case -- almost as incredible that TH-cam should be allowed to force-feed advertising almost every sixty seconds without one word of protest from its audience.
This was 1940. Japan and Germany had already declared war on the future "Allied Powers" in Europe. The US (at least President Roosevelt did) KNEW it wouldn't be long before it, too, was dragged into the conflict and, yes, Mr. Wong was Chinese (the Chinese would later be an ally against the Japanese who had years before invaded their country), he was not Japanese. The US was not as enlightened as it is today (he said sarcastically) and was already weary of people from the Orient-they made no distinction between Chinese and Japanese.

Mr.Wong never drops his umbrella - even when climbing down a ladder. Just love these old shows.
And the hero hardly ever loses his hat in a fight. Steven Spielberg paid homage to that in his Indiana Jones films.
