- In the middle of a pictorial lecture on his recent expedition to the Mongolian Desert, Dr. John Benton (Charles Miller) the famous explorer, drinks from the water bottle on his lecture table, collapses and dies. His last words "Eternal Fire" are the only clue Chinese detective Jimmy Wong (Keye Luke) and Captain Street (Grant Withers) of the police department have to work on. Win Len (Lotus Long), Benton's secretary, reveals the doctor's dying words refer to a scroll which tells the location of rich oil deposits. Wong and Street then begin the search for the killer among Benton's associates.

Boy! How cinema has changed! We need to appreciate these movies from the time they came.
I hope Keye Luke is given the full recognition he deserves one day. A real trailblazer.

I suspect that the desert film footage shown at the beginning of the movie was from the Gobi Desert expeditions made by the American Museum of Natural History scientist Roy Chapman Andrews between 1922 and 1925. If memory serves, they discovered the first clutch of dinosaur eggs ever found. This movie was great fun to watch. Keye Luke did a fine job as Jimmy Wong..... perceptive, friendly, and a good sense of humor. Wong's cook was wonderful and always a pleasure to watch with his sarcastic wit.
It's a damn shame we didn't see more of Keye and Pearl (Lotus) Shibata through the years. They were both quite enjoyable in the films they did, and much more talented than the studios gave them credit for........
They are enjoyable, but this film was released in 1940. The war soon followed and that probably eliminated Asians in starring roles for ten years or more. In any case, studios don't care about talent, they care about ticket sales. It's not personal, it's just business.

Pretty good potboiler, held together by a very credible teamup of Keye Luke as Mr. Wong and Grant Withers as Capt. Street. Too bad they did not make a few more of these.
Loved the footage of the expedition.
It was great to see Keye Luke get a starring role, nearly half a century later he will be the unfogettable blind Master Po of the Kung Fu series on TV

seriously, he was in the Kung Fu series? He came to my attention via the Charlie Chan clips here on TH-cam, as I'm sure is the case with many who familiar with Keye Luke.
There were 5 other "Mr. Wong"s before this, but Boris Karloff had the lead rôle.
What a shame the futures of America and China couldn't have turned out so different from the way the did & more in line with the respect and goodwill in this film. Great, old movie.
The only time an Asian starred & played the lead during this period. Karloff played the lead in the previous Mr. Wong films. It is a shame Keye Luke never again starred in a leading role. This is another favorite Monogram. of mine.
He had a main role in the Kung Fu tv series.

And~ who cares? If an actor of any nationality can do the role entertainingly, what difference does his national origin make? I loved both early 'Charlie Chans' because they were fun. The third guy was not suited for the role.

@@kimberlyharris2109Actors ACT. Portraying someone of a different race is a talent. Agreed that it should done without malice, but those who overreact are usually not of the race in question. If East Asians have a problem with things like this, they can speak for themselves. It's insulting to assume they are voiceless sheep who have no backbone just because of their race. As a Native American, I'm put off by White folks who think they have to speak up for me. I can do fine on my own.

Enjoyable and plesantly surprising, a Asian detective hero played by an actual Asian and an lovely Asian co-star plaing an intelligent female role. Very progressive for the 1940's..
Perfect illustration of why things must be judged in their own time and not anachronistically by current standards.
This was the last installment in the "Wong" film series. After Boris Karloff's contract expired, he declined to perform in any further episodes. As a result, despite Keye Luke's fine performance, audiences and theater operators alike lost interest in the series, which therefore came to an end.
The saddest part of all this is that Luke was signed on for four more Mr. Wong films. The only reason he didn't get to do them was because people didn't want to watch a movie without Boris Karloff.

This film is a lot of fun, mostly because of Keye Luke. It is the best of the "Mr. Wong" series.
This is one of only two films from back then I have seen from back then where Chinese Americans had the leads, and where there was no yellowface. The other was "Daughter of Shanghai", which starred Anna May Wong and Philip Ahn. Both were great movies.

+Alex Gregis Yes indeed, there are some really dreadful past (hopefully, for the most part) practices treated as completely "normal" in these old yet still beautifully filmed black and white movies, aren't there? I guess the blatantly condescending racism (as in this film's portrayal of multiple Chinese stereotypes - even down to the style of the font in the credits) would have been a more noteworthy observation for me to have made, but it was so blatant and widespread that I believe most thinking and empathetic human beings can nowadays see that flaw right off the bat - one hopes, anyhow. Thanks, by the way, for being so courteous in your comment. That's a rare contribution in these internet comment threads, so your effective effort in very civil discourse is as much appreciated as it is uncommon!

Sadly, this and one or two of the Mr. Moto pictures seem to be the closest we ever got to that.

Mine was Sen Young, "Hop Sing" of Bonanza. Young had such youthful exuberance it completed the role. Besides, his interaction with Mantan Moreland was simply fun to watch.
Keye Luke's mustache has to go, though.

Great Movie, but the sound is too low!
They need to pump up the volume on this !!! They don't do themselves any favors by not having the sound/volume loud enough, because you can always turn the sound down, but when its too low, you can just forget it, because its not going to get any better or louder!!!

@@richardlegault5644 I checked the Wikipedia article and Anderson's comment seems to be perfectly correct. Guandong is the correct spelling of what used to be called Canton. The language there is still called Cantonese, as opposed to Mandarin, which is spoken in Beijing. There are many so-called "dialects" of Chinese, but they really should be considered separate languages. Yes, most of the Chinese who came over in the 19th century to build the railroads spoke Cantonese, and that is still what is heard spoken in San Francisco's Chinatown today. Also "tsap" would be an older transliteration into the Roman alphabet; today it would be spelled "qap." The "q" (or "ts") is pronounced like a very soft "ch." Incidentally, "Tsing Tao" beer today would be spelled "Qing Dao." The correct pronunciation would be "Ch'ing Dao." (The apostrophe represents a softening of the "ch" sound.) I don't speak either Mandarin or Cantonese, although I have studied each briefly.

A little continuity please. Since Lt. Street had met and used Mr. Wong five times before this he would have recognized Mr. Wong even if he wasn't being played by Boris Karloff.
I wish they would have had Boris Karloff in this role Grant Withers still was Street unless Karloff was tired of his role as Mr Wong, too bad I love these Mr Wong shows.
That's only assuming that this is in the same continuity of the dates that the movies came out. But really, not all of these old movies (or later TV shows) had the best continuity.

So cool and synchronous in a way to see Keye Luke as Wong, finally the lead detective his character always wanted to be as #1 son in the Chan films. Only the 2nd time during the Asian detective frenzy, the 1st being the 1926 Chan serial, that an Asian was cast in the lead as opposed to Karloff, Orland, Lorre, Toler, et al.
And at least they made the white American police Capt to be a bossy, racist buffoon for a change.

Boris Karloff played a very stereotyped version of Detective Wong. Keye Luke played this as less "inscrutable" and more intelligent. It is hard to tell what would have happened if the war with Japan had not started. It could have changed the whole mindset toward Asians. This could have been his breakout like Bruce Lee after reprising Keye Luke's role as Kato with the Green Hornet.
Karloff played Wong with a sly sense of hunor, as if he were amused by the characters around him.

This was Keye Luke's only starring role in film.
This should have been Keye's series. He did great.

according to imbd this was the last of series of 6 movies, Karloff couldn't do this one so Keye Luke stepped in and did an excellent job. Funny that Street first asked him his name and did not have a reaction when he said James Lee Wong..

Keye Luke was a talented artist as well as actor. A great linguist. America wasn’t any better at recognising their racism then as it is now.
Keye Luke's character should have been developed more could have been a real money spinning machine . 2 dollars to fill it up sounds great.

Umm... That was done because the original audience was compromised of English-speakers. It would make little sense to have them speaking a Chinese dialect that they couldn't understand.

Keye Luke does a better job in my opinion than Korloff as Mr. Wong. I do like Korloff's acting in other films but not as a China man.
@pierusofpella Well with all the lead characters in the Mr Wong films Karloff did a great job, with that not so bright detective Street and a headline grabbing woman reporter the Mr Wong films is a great get away from our hectic world of today.
