2020 Santa Cruz Tall Boy 4 CC - The VPP Extreme Country Bike?

  • More than cosmetic upgrades for this Tall Boy for 2020. There's a whole new lower link VPP suspension system going on out back.
    Santa Cruz’s Tallboy has received a major facelift for 2020. This Tallboy 4 isn’t the same 120mm travel VPP 29er we’ve ridden in the past, it’s all-new from the geo to the lowered suspension platform. It looks better, it feels better, and we’re pretty confident that it will ride better too.
    Santa Cruz has very nicely set over a 2020 Tallboy CC X01 Reserve, the 3rd bike from top of the range, with a flagship CC carbon frame, a pair of those indestructible carbon Reserve wheels and an SRAM X01 Eagle 12-speed drivetrain.
    The frame features 120mm of rear-wheel travel and 130mm travel up front via a RockShox Pike Select+ fork with matching yellow decals.
    Other than that amazing colour, the most striking difference between the 2020 Santa Cruz Tallboy and the previous Tallboy 3 is the new Lower link VPP suspension platform. First seen on the Nomad and then on the Bronson, the 120mm Tallboy receives the same low shock treatment. There are a couple of benefits with mounting the shock lower in the frame such as improving the center of gravity and increasing standover height.
    Some numbers not mentioned in the video..
    Bike size: Medium
    Reach: 450mm in flip chip 'Hi' setting
    Reach: 448mm in flip chip 'Lo' setting
    More numbers for all other geo's and lengths here - singletrackworld.com/2019/08/...

    Great video bro! Not too sure if this is my style bike but you did nice job of showing the handling/ride of this design. Crisp smooth video and edit, well done!

    @stm: big thumbs up for your great bike-reviews, it really gives some good impressions on how the bikes ride! I'm totally in love with those american short travel 29ers, especially the SC Tallboy or the Ibis Ripley, however it's hard to afford one of these for me. It would be awesome if you could compare the ride and feel of those kinda bikes with some of the European contenders, like the new Cube Stereo 120 HPC TM/SL (any chance you will have one of these for review in the near future?) or the Canyon Neuron CF. Those should be quite capable bikes downhill and uphill as well, though they don't offer the most progressive geometry. Especially those new Stereo's got quite slack at 67 hta... :)

      I have a Tallboy CC and it’s not at all comparable to the Cube.
      That’s not to say the Cube is a bad bike, it’s fun in its own realm and very good value for the money (while my Tallboy with the Reserve Carbon rims is pretty bad value for the money at almost 8.500€…).
      The Cube is a good all day „traditional German“ touring mtb.
      You can use it for descents and it will handle them, but the Tallboy is much more capable, while being also the more poppy and jumpy bike.
      If your not super into jumping and jibbing you can go with the Cube and have lots of fun!
      It will also jump without any problems, it just needs some more rider input to get the same height etc.
      If you don’t have the money for the Santa Cruz, don’t even worry about it!
      The Cube will bring you lots of joy!
      It’s not always about the cost and above from 4-5000€ you get very little more for your money.
      It’s all diminishing returns and a bit of bling and weight saving.
      I’d say I could ride all the stuff I ride on my Tallboy without problems on the Cube and I will have the same fun!
      You could also look at some other value options like the YT Izzo, the Propain Hugene or the Ibis Ripley AF (which is way to pricy in the EU, but if you can get it for the US price it’s a damn good bike)
      You could also get an aluminum Tallboy, but I think the aluminum Santa Cruz bikes still are too expensive.

    Dude... the Tallboy has always been a VPP bike. The difference is that this time is driven by the lower linkage.

    • @singletrack
      @singletrack  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Indeed. Classic case of being out of breath on the bike and forgetting to include the words, 'lower link' before VPP.

    Got the 5010 v3 with the upper shock. ... I can smell an early refresh from SC next year as 5010 and the blur are the only ones left with this style

    • @singletrack

      You could be on to something there. The lower VPP has great advantages of clearance and low CoG over the standard/upper mounted VPP and they've certainly proved the concept here.

    How would the Tallboy compare to a Yeti SB130? Is the Yeti a better pedaler? I rode the Tallboy recently but I’m 5’8 and I rode a large which seemed too big for me. They didn’t have a medium for me to demo. I felt that it wasn’t the best climber but that could be due to the size.

    Does anyone know of a video that shows how best to shift the VPP from high to low on a 2021/2022 Santa Cruz Tallboy? It seems as if the high/low pivot point screw for the VPP faces toward the side of the bike that one can't access, due to the frame, unless you remove either the shock or the lower pivot point screw and then hope that you are able to reach the high/low pivot point screw from the opposite side (right side). Thanks, great video!!

    Thoughts of putting a 120mm fox step cast fork on this bike ? Making it a touch steeper and a bit less extreme more down country

    • @singletrack
      @singletrack  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Pike Select+ fork this model comes with can be tuned down to 120mm so Santa Cruz clearly see that as an option. That 10mm difference will probably equate to perhaps a quarter of a degree in head angle change, which as it so happens is the same difference that flipping the chip on the lower linkage makes so it's possible to use a 120mm fork, flip the chip and still keep the geo roughly the same. In short.. Yeah! Do it! :-)

    Did you take the B-Line on some of those jumps/Rollers because of a limit of the bike or another reason?
    Have a V3 5010 and considering the TallBoy now that they have moved towards Trail with it more.
    Give up some of the BMX feel of the 5010 for the XC feel of the TallBoy4

    How do you think will the Tallboy perform in a classic tour e.g. crossing the alps?

    • @singletrack
      @singletrack  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be a contender. There's plenty of space in the frame for bottles and other essentials for a long day and perhaps something like that would be a good option for the longer chainstay. It would certainly cope well with the climbing and I bet the DH would be lots of fun. Shorter reach should help too.

    The tallboy looks awsome on the gravity trails and smooth stuff, but I'm interested in how it performs and feels on the chunky more technical trails. It looks like a XC and Trail bike mix but how does it handle the chunky trails and longer descents?

      It's definitely not a long bike (450mm on the medium). If you aren't a fan of long reach bikes it may well be sized right for you. But yes, if you like a long bike then sizing up may be a good move. As always, try before you buy, eh? - Mark
