  • I recently purchased a Santa Cruz Megatower as my one and only MTB. I absolutely love what they have done with the newest lower linkage design, so I figured I'd take a ride aboard the New Tallboy & Hightower for a first impressions ride feel! These bikes have come so far and they have hit a super nice sweet spot for geometry on the big wheels! Hope you enjoy the ride!

    Another nice review. Yes, the Megatower is more than I need for 90% of the riding I do, but that 10% of trail that is truly rowdy (that most of my friends either avoid or walk down) is where I have the most fun. Of course if I had a limitless budget, I would have the Tallboy for the all-day epics. But for the time being, I keep telling myself that I am getting stronger as I lug the beast up the hill.

    • @bike_somm
      @bike_somm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Theaveragejoe-joe haha totally true! I absolutely love the way the Megatower rides even easy trails & when you really need that extra cushion for the pushin it’s got it all! May be slightly heavier then the lighter weight trail/XC bikes but it still pedals superbly well and climbs great compared to most bikes nowadays!

      @Cartsp70 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theaveragejoe-joe Dude keep the Beast , the Megatower is awesome, don’t focus on the it’s climbing abilities because it rewards you downhill, and tbh The Megatower can climb good for its size , it’s awesome 👏

    Awesome review !!!. Im stuck between the hightower and the Tallboy. Do you think the the 2.3 maxxis minion Dhr will make the Hightower as playful and fast as the Tallboy or is the geometry of the Tallboy completely different even if I stiffened the shocks on the Hightower ?

    • @bike_somm
      @bike_somm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good questions.. didn’t see this comment till now, but there’s a bunch of options to play with both the Hightower and Tallboy setups.. if it was me, the Hightower is super close to the Megatower but with a tad less forgiving feel and ability on rough rowdy terrain.. the Tallboy is closer to the Hightower in performance but is much closer to that trail feel that makes you feel like your not on too much bike. The Tallboy can also allow more adjustability due to the Chainstay flip chip and ability to run a Cascade link & Slightly more burly fork and that would make it feel much closer to the Hightower without needing the actual Hightower.
      At the end of the day you can’t pick a wrong bike and it’s more personal preference on which end of the scale you want to Lean towards.. trail fun play Tallboy -Trail All mountain Enduro play Hightower

    Just came back from Annadel. Been thinking about a new bike for 2021 and was glad to put down a baseline ride with my current bike (base alloy stumpy st 27.5). Glad Trailhouse rents out great bikes - will have to hit them up as I think Annadel will be a great place to demo and is representative of the type of riding I enjoy the most (technical climbing with some flow and chunky descents) . I have a hunch it’s going to come down to the TB/HT or Ripley/Ripmo.

    • @bike_somm

      It’s going to be a good place to test those bikes for sure! Very good verity of trails. I’d say those 4 bikes are some of the best in class so you could almost pick one blindfolded and be happy, my heart still has a special place for Ibis bikes in how they feel and pedal so darn well.. Santa Cruz is just my ride or die that doesn’t fail & has lifetime warranty on the frame bearings & wheels so I’m stoked on my Megatower! Let me know how it all goes and what bike wins!

      Pablo Romero this bike blew me away at how well it did out here! Since you kno Annadel, I'm sure you know how chunky and chattery that last section of cobblestone is & it handled it like a champ! I love the feeling of bigger Enduro bike Geo typically, but I think I was more shocked by the Tallboy's capabilities vs the Hightower & this bike had the climbing prowess to keep your energy high & ready for more! Thanks for the compliment

      Based on my experience with my 2018 TB, I can confirm that you can’t go wrong buying it. The 2020 model is even better.
      I am 95 kg, so not skinny, though athletic... but have just restarted riding after years.
      On the TB you literally fly uphill and even super gnarly downhill sections never feel like too much for this bike.
      If you really shred a lot, the HT might be better.
      Otherwise the TB will definitely be your ultimate Swiss Knife.
      I call my TB a „mountain goat“ uphill and a tank downhill... for good reason.
      I hope that helps with your decision. :)

      Bike Somm what brand of break components/combos do you recommend for the Tallboy? Thanks!

    • @bike_somm
      @bike_somm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Torrey Hiker what’s your price max per brake unit? First question to the rider asking.. How much power do you want to have vs how much weight are you trying to save? I really liked my old Hayes Dominion A4 brakes that were on my Reign SX! Unbelievable lever feel & so much power and modulation! I sold then with the bike last year unfortunately or I’d have them on my Megatower.. the Code R brakes are okay! For me just okay does the job of power management to modulation. So if it were my Tallboy I’d just be throwing some Strong stoppers on it because it’s a rocket ship of a bike! (The latest 2020 platform that is) I’m about 168 lbs & the code R is as low in power as I’d ever go.. that’s just me tho! I’d love to try the new Shimano XT brakes or the XTR 4 piston brakes. I’ve had good experiences with Hope brakes & Thats about all I can speak to currently 👍🏼 let me know what ya works best for you tho! Ohh and Sintered Pads

    Hey man thanks for the vid. I had been thinking about selling my megatower to get a tallboy and recently decided to keep it. Just needed a different back tire for normal trail riding as the dhr had me feeling like I was pulling a boat anchor behind me. Now I’m more comfortable with it but after watching your video I’m kinda back to considering it 😂

    • @bike_somm
      @bike_somm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      T.j. Bennett ya my Mega has Assegai front and rear.. if it was the CC and the lightest build possible I woukd say nothing can quite compare! It’s so much bike but also so normal compared to big 29er bikes! I’m so happy I decided on the Mega! If I wasn’t Racing as much or just wanted a normal mtb I’d get the Tallboy and up the fork travel and it would be quite awesome!

    Awesome video mate. So I need a little push here. Let’s say I’m in the market for a full suspension, I enjoy fun fast trail riding, not to fancy/big gaps jumper, and also enjoy long gravel rides. Which Bike out of this 3 would you suggest? I’m thinking in the Hightower but not 100% sure. Thanks.

    You weren't kidding, you did the video quickly. Great work man. What I don't like about the Tallboy is the 130mm fork. Tallboy deserves 140mm to match that plush suspension. Two, I don't like the reach on it compared to the Mega or Hightower. I can't believe they put a shorter reach on it. My test video I rode a Large and I'm 5'10, it felt cramped and its close to that over the bike feeling. It is super, super capable bike though. It seemed to really surprise you as it did me.

    • @bike_somm
      @bike_somm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Travel the Narrow Trail Haha Awesome I’m stoked you fell similarly! I will say I wasn’t too cramped on the bike at all, it did have a 50mm stem & I would prefer a 140 Fox 36 also! But maybe it had something to do with the Seat Position on the rails.. dunno but I absolutely loved the bike for how light it was and how well it kills its bike category in DH prowess! Also I’m about 5’11 3/4 with longer legs and a shortish torso

    So I'm a bay area local and is the Tallboy good for like Skeggs, San Joaquin Miller Park, Mailbox, Rockville, and any other gnarly trails that the bay area offers? I'm having a hard time deciding between 140mm fork Tallboy or Hightower with 160mm fork (if it really needs it). I like hearing about how fun and snappy the tallboy is but i personally like to be over biked a little bit.

      @bike_somm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tallboy would be my fun bike if I wasn’t racing in the Enduro series! Love that bike & maybe with a Cascade link & 140 36 fork it could be all most people could ever really need for 95% of the trails

    Are you recommending the trance29 after this ride? Which HT build will you recommend as I was looking at C build.

    • @bike_somm
      @bike_somm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if I was going to be considering the Tallboy maybe I would try the Trance29 & Ripley.. tho if you are looking at the Hightower then it’s more travel and bike than the Tallboy Trance29 & Ripley. The HT C build would be a great all rounder for trail riding maybe some light Enduro.
      Also if your considering the Hightower I might even consider the Ibis Ripmo also because they similar geometry & have a very good builds that aren’t too crazy expensive. I think it’s a slightly lighter bike than the HT also.. but I don’t think there is a wrong answer or perfect bike, just a bike that will help your riding style and suit your needs.
      Best of luck finding one also maybe try one out before handing over the cash 💰 if you can!

    Thanks for the great video 👍. I'm currently riding a XC bike and looking to upgrade to a trail bike, trying to decide between the Tallboy and the Ripley. Sounds like the Tallboy climbs almost as good as the Ripley but descends better - sounds like a good comparison to the Ripmo? I'm looking at this video together with the comparison you did between the Ripley/SB130/Ripmo. How would you think the Tallboy will rank in that context?

    • @bike_somm
      @bike_somm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yossi Maish the Tallboy would be closer to the Ripley overall.. obviously it does descend better then the Ripley.. not as good as the Ripmo.. so that’s a hard call! I’d say depending on what you really want/need the Tallboy is the best option for an XC/Trail bike the Ripmo is the best option for a Trail/Enduro/XC mix.. not the best at any one in particular.. but better then the Hightower when comparing the Ripmo to the Hightower.. so that’s a tough call, but try one if you can and then you will know if you need or want more or less travel

    It was mentioned that the tallboy is close to the Ripley. So which is better overall: the Tallboy or the Ripley?

    • @bike_somm
      @bike_somm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Norbert Demanuele For the trype of rider I am.. I'd choose the Tallboy because it was a bit more solid and dampening feeling in the frame.. but also a bit more composed on the rougher downs! The Ripley may climb a tad better being that it can be made slightly lighter in the overall build, but less weight is only sometimes more beneficial.. not all the time and in all types of terrain.

    • @NDemanuele1

      @@bike_somm Thanks. The reason I asked is because I been riding a V1 Ripley for about 5 years now, and am considering getting another bike.
      IMO, I feel the Ripley is the best climber in the industry, however it could be more stable in descents. Even the newer gens like the V4, I heard could be a bit more stable,
      I might demo a Tallboy. I also heard the Orbea Occam is a good one too.

    • @bike_somm

      Norbert Demanuele I would love to tell you what is the best bike in the world.. but quite honestly I would be fibbing to some degree of self proclaimed bias! The New Ripley & The New Tallboy are some of the best bikes I’ve ever ridden each to their own purposes! You could not pick a wrong bike between the two of you were blindfolded.. but I will go on record to say if I was buying a new bike I ‘d have to try it first to know if I really love it or not & for me the Tallboy won my heart for Shortish Travel 29ers!
      I’d absolutely Love to try one of the new Obera bikes tho! Btw it’s funny you mention that.. because I just finished watching the latest Obera Episodes (#5 the Finale) and I think they are the best mtb brand in the world as far as their team videos go and their non-biased ( show any brand and all team riders of every part of the world ) production! A few people I know who are 5’9 & 5’10 are just fine with Large, depends on the individual as arms/legs lengths differ and some people may like the stability large gives.. it your going for all out playfulness and aren’t doing much demanding chunky terrain a medium would be a great bike still!
      Perhaps a large if you want a bit of forgiveness for more demanding terrain.. shorten the 50 stem to a 35, 40 or even just 45mm and adjusting the seat position on the rails more forward can give you a smaller feeling cockpit if that’s something you really want.
      Hope this helps a bit! It’s a great bike and I’m sure your going to love it!

    Too bad you didn't swap wheel and tires between the Tallboy and Hightower to see how much of a difference that would have made in the ride both up and down. Hightower set is just over half a pound of extra rotational mass.

    • @bike_somm
      @bike_somm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duane White they were both running almost the same tire wheel setup, the HT just had 30mm internal rim widths vs the Tallboy's 27mm internal rim widths.. so pretty darn close if you ask me! Maybe the Tallboy's slightly narrower widths helped the weight a bit, I just wouldn't think it's "major"

    Not really a fair/equal review of the three bikes since most of the video was about one bike. My advice is if you're going to do a review/comparison of three bikes, you should ride all three over the same tracks and discuss the ride during all three rides. This seemed rather biased since you were on one bike (Tall Boy) the majority of the time. When you were on the high tower, not a lot was said or showed compared to the Tall Boy. If you're going to compare climbing you need to use the tools supplied on the bikes that were designed to assist in climbing such as the flip chip and lock out on the shock (s) (if it has one). The Mega Tower wasn't even showed in the video. Comparison reviews should be done equally. People rely on good reviews to help base their purchasing decisions. Not everyone has access to demo bikes or rentals. I really didn't find this video very helpful.

      Wayne E. Mehh well that’s just too bad you didn’t like it, as many people have found this small review helpful & because I own the Megatower and I know exactly how it feels in comparison.. the Ht was a softer tuned rear shock & it was a nice balance between the two but for my personal opinion it came down to me only wanting the Tallboy or the Megatower which I own & love.. also felt the Megatower was more playful poppy then the HT but it could have just been a poor setup on the demo bike.. but I know how a bike is going to feel & handle in about the first mile of riding it up and down some chunk which this place doesn’t lack any chunk.. so it was nice to try all three bikes and give my personal take and yes “my bias”review on what I’d like and why.. anywho thanks for your Advice but I’ll do as I please since this is my channel 🤘🏼 Cheerio

    I think I won't go for any of these, I pretty much decided on Nicolai, due to all of the features it has, also I think I might get coil fork cus of the pressure changes, I won't get carbon frame, I will get alloy frame, built to handle everything I throw at it, not sure on fork yet, Maybe MRP, Öhlins, maybe convert a fox 36 I get second hand, not sure.
    as for brakes I will stick with TRP Spyke dual piston mechanical brakes for a while, I am definitely doen with Shimano, I've enough of the leaking brakes anymore.
    Only carbon I will have is bars, not sure if I will keep the Race Face Sixc in 20mm rise or go up in rise.
    I need performance, durability, reliability. but I've not demoed a bike in my life.

      Johannes Nilsen Take a look at my older videos from a month or two ago.. i’ve ridden an Alloy Giant Reign SX 27.5 bike for over 2 years now and loved it! But braking a hard core Enduro bike nowdays is pretty darn hard to do! Also this is my first Carbon bike with Carbon wheels so you better believe i’m going to be putting it to the test over time! What is really cool about buying this carbon bike is that it has a “LIFETIME” Warranty!!! Even if i was to crack or brake the bike i wouldn’t have to go BUY a whole new one! So that is the best thing money can buy in my opinion.. A lifetime Guaranteed Bike! haha Stoked on that! But as for forks.. you cant go wrong with a Fox 36.. Coil is cool if you want to go downhill ONLY.. i’ll wait a few more years to see the different “Coil” forks come out.. but air does just fine for this guy!
