BEST Short Travel 29er? Santa Cruz Tallboy v4 - Part #1

  • #SantaCruz bicycles #Tallboy v4 build part 1! The redesigned lower link #VPP, a short travel 29er that I've been waiting for. It has Enduro geometry with 120/130mm travel, perfect replacement of my old Transition Smuggler. Santa Cruz calls it extreme country, downhiller's XC bike. D-country anyone? In this part 1 I'm taking a closer look at the frame, this is a 2020 Tallboy CC version and all the juicy details are included. Enjoy!

Built up this frame a year ago, it’s fantastic..And the dropper post cable routing, it’s magic😉. Use it for all day xc with light tires and wheels, and switch to heavy tires for the bike park.
Only small gripe, is a little cable rattle, in the tube in tube, would like a solution for that...

Can't wait to see you build it up. I snagged one in purple and love it. Curious to see if you mess with any of the flip chips. On mine, I've tried the hi setting but not the long chainstay setting (xl frame).
Flipping to the hi setting was surprisingly noticeable on the trail. Definitely fewer pedal strikes but I preferred the handling of the slacker angles, so I've settled on the LO.

Interested to see the build. I have been thinking of buying this frame myself, Short travel bikes (115-130 mm) are the sweet spot for me. I currently am riding a 2019 Giant Trance 1 29er. Great for the compulsory climbing where I live and can handle the single track going down. Love the bike but would like to try this one. I usually buy a frame, strip as much as I can off the present bike and buy the rest. Most every thing on the Trance will fit on the Tallboy. Keep us up to date with the build and happy trails from Tasmania.

Suprised you got a 290mm seatpost in there, I was under the impression maximum insertion was 270mm for the large. I had to email Santa Cruz about it.. given that it's not a listed spec they could have just estimated that though and it sounds like it's closer to 300... I'd really love to know what you are able to fit in there slammed and how it goes when you build it (because I selfishly would love to swap my 160mm yoke to a 185 or 210 one up ;) lol)! Thanks for the content, its a beautiful bike :)!

I thought the 5010 was the extreme of the crop, because this name indicates the complete opposite of what it is. Glad to see there are more bikes with less suspension given the fact most brands just keep pushing on the downwards segment. The 5010 is actually my favorite bike, and I hope I can afford it at some point. Loving the 2022 model in yellow, also that it's not a matte choice because those tend to deal worse with scuffs and marks.
The color of the bike you got there looks like olive to me, at least on video. Looks pretty good in my eyes.
Most likely I will end up with a Propain Hugene instead, because I've been without a trailbike for so long now that I don't want to wait all that much longer. Compromises need to be made no matter what we end up with, and I'm sure I'll be satisfied with that as well.

that color is pretty close to the sammontana team yellow as seen on masi bikes in the late 70s/early 80s. the good thing about euro road bike paint is that it was amazingly variable even when new and faded quite readily, so you can never be completely wrong. the california masis had better paint quality, but that thin italian lacquer was always an adventure.
