    Note: if you mix red and green light you won't get brown light you'll get white light.

    hey Joe I don't have fancy setup like you BUT I have ingenuity lol..I would like to have the same background as your using and like the one that is advertised in description but not sure how I would suspend that in my condo? I have a green screen setup already but not sure if this is too heavy for that rig, any suggestions would be most appreciated...

    Joe,
    Your videos are so invaluable! Amazing info! Quick question... Is med gray/18% gray the best background color to use when shooting models/subjects and adding a texture to the gray in post using Photoshop? Probably way cheaper than buying muslin and canvas backgrounds.
    Thanks!

    Smashing video and I could not agree more. I shot my entire #Futurnatrix project using just one 11m x 1.35m cloud grey seamless paper background. I think it perfectly illustrates your point about how versatile a grey background can be. There's a few #bts shots from my Instagram feed. The key light is usually boomed up high out of the way of the shot but I try not to let the nose shadow touch the lips. A light on the floor shoots through a white umbrella. Sometimes I have silver umbrellas wrap light around from behind. Sometimes I put one or two lights on the background. Graduating different colours into one another on the background is fun! Using colour theory to select gels for lights and thinking about how much colour is going to be visible in the frame and whereabouts in the frame it will occur is important. Exposing for gels can be tricky however... I did all mine by eye and shot the whole project at my local community centre where I hired a room and set up my kit.

    fantastic how easy it is when you do it turn gray to any color with gels. I've tried that with my nikon sb700 and nothing happens. something is wrong, maby the gels are to soft the one that comes with it or the flash is doing something wrong .....
    what settings are you using on your camera and flashes? I've tried 1/125s to 1/8000s still nothing and flash ttl -2 stop and -3 stop but still no color.
    hope you can help me and others that have the same issues with this.

      Without seeing your actually set-up José Campos, it is difficult to tell you exactly why it isn't working for you. I assure you this is a tried and proven technique, The most logical explanation is that your foreground lights are also lighting the background and that is what washes out the background color. You need to have some separation of the subject and the background so that your main lights don't light the background.

    What kind of color gels are you using to make the background color so colorful? Is there a particular thickness or material gel?

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use almost anything Karwanna Dyson. From lightweight cellophane to expensive cine gels - the most important factor is how deep is the color. The cellophane is usually very transparent and will only give you a tint of color. If you can afford them - the ones made specifically for photography generally are deeper in color. Joe, you mentioned the 18% gray as preferable, and in the video you highlighted both #84 Dove Gray and #53 Charcoal. So, which one is 18% gray? Savage doesn't seem to list 18% gray specifically. Thanks for the tips.

    any tips on lighting setup on a seamless gray background (or any color) in a very small room. (maybe 12x12 ?) I've been using just a one off camera setup with a 60 in umbrella with subject about 4 ft.from backdrop and light about 2-3 ft. from subject. but keep getting uneven lighting and shadows. I'm assuming because it's too close ? If it was just portrait I could get away with it but they are full body so it shows the uneven fall off of the lighting. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually purchase either 3 yrds or 4 yards Ryan Odneal. You really only need 3 yards for portraits, but as I show in this video: th-cam.com/video/9VsP4T9AFp4/w-d-xo.html I do from time-to-time use it for a full length shot and then the 4 yards is easier to work with. I don't sew two pieces together - you could - but you would then need to make sure that you always have the background out of focus (using depth of field) otherwise you will see the seam,

    Hi, thanks for the video, i see the studio has wooden floor that is kind of shiny, has this been a problem with the lights or strobes reflecting on the subjet or all around the room? I have the same type of floor at my home studio trailer and the roof is only 8 feet hight and is painted light beige, horrible. What would you recomend to put on the floor to not make it reflect light,,, any idea? Thanks in advance.

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all locoderematet, the light beige ceiling will cause you more problems than the shiny floor. The wooden floor causes no issues with reflection or color cast. If you are having problems, try placing a seemless background under your subject.

    Thanks for doing this Joe! I was just trying to figure this out. Question. How much power do I need coming out of a light to get the background white and have decent spread? Would a 300 watt light be sufficient?

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome Chad Valifianakis! That question can't be answered. While a 300 watt light seems bright - I have no idea how bright your main lights are and the distance they are set from the subject or the distance your 300 watt light is from the background... and my list goes on. I also don't know the width of your background which will ultimately determine if you can light it evenly with one light. It is a challenge to do so and the bigger the background the lest practical that becomes. I would encourage you to watch my lighting videos as a starting point to figuring out your equipment needs. th-cam.com/video/RpbiUvXDB5U/w-d-xo.html

    That is One great video. very helpful.
    And also Can you please explain how to shoot full length shots, rather than just portrait or head shots by adding gel to the background

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! ismail mohammed Glad you enjoyed it!. Shooting full length is really no different than shooting headshots. Place your lights - with the gel at a distance that the flash will cover the background.

    Hey Joe - doubt you'll respond so long from now, but would you recommend a middle grey if one was turning a basement room into a studio? Or keep it at white (or some other neutral pleasant colour) and use a middle grey paper roll?

    • @theJoeEdelman
      @theJoeEdelman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what and how you like to shoot Alan Bailward This video explains my set-up: th-cam.com/video/cggfTPIQcHs/w-d-xo.html In the past I have done a studio half all white (floor, ceiling and walls) and half all gray - that also worked very well. Just think through your preferred workflow based on your style.

The good new is that I have a black background and I can get fall to black, black, grey, and white backgrounds. After watching your video, I do now see the benefit of gels...lol.... Maybe that will be my next purchase. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

      Gunjan giri there is no way for me to give you a good answer to that question. I don't know what you are shooting - how much space you have - what lighting you have, etc. The best background color is the color you want for your video or green screen.
