Found your video today and figured I would give it a try. I took apart my window motor and followed your steps exactly.. Except all the metering because I don't own any of that equipment. I cleaned the copper connectors and ran a needle through each part as you described.. After a year of my window not working it now works perfect!!!!!!!! Saved me tons of time and money !!! Thank you so much for taking the time to share!!!!

Thanks for that.Replaced the switch, replaced the temic module, inspected the wires in the loom.Didn't work.Wasted,I looked at this again, took the motor apart following your clear instructions, found one of the brushes was stuck out of contact with the armature.Another operation made possible by youtube and people like you wanting to help others. Thanks again!
    thanks again!

I have just been scrolling through the comments and naturally, you have a lot of rave reviews. I liked the way you went to the trouble of setting your camera up so that you could actually DO a two handed job WITH two hands. Most seem to fumble while trying to do everything with one hand, and consequently the camera work suffers severely. Anyone watching these types of videos are trying to learn something, and they are watching intently. Shaky camera work makes it very hard to follow. ALL instructional videos are appreciated, because someone has taken the time to have a go at helping others.
Yours just happens to be fantastic.
    Cheers from down under.

THIS IS EXCELLENT. WELL PRESENTED. EASY TO UNDERSTAND and FOLLOW. I FIXED the REAR PASSENGER-SIDE WINDOW in my 2005 Honda CRV. It went down - BUT WOULD NOT GO UP. I received a quote of OVER $900 from the DEAER and around $400 - for the SAME WORK - from a local shop. By following your GUIDANCE and ADVICE in the video - I determined the problem was not the MOTOR for the REGULATOR . It is the SWITCH. YOU SAVED me $400. I would not take it to the DEALER............ THANK YOU !

I watched a few other video, but your video was very thorough. I can tell that you have a good amount of electrical / engineering knowledge. I’m having an issue with my Volvo window, $385, out of the question. I feel confident after watching you video, about tackling this job. Fashaad & Eric…that last comment cracked me up! No cure for stupid!🤭. Thank you for taking the time to explain & show your testing methods.👍💯💯💯

Yep. You can replace the motor without even pulling the glass and regulator out in a lot of situations. Still, the other mechanical parts can fail due to mechanical wear and then we're back to square one... Don't know why his unit costed $350 but maybe you can look around. Go to a junkyard if you absolutely have to! Obviously this guy doesn't mind a little work to troubleshoot and that's more fun to ME anyways!

Very thorough troubleshooting on the electrics, thank you. A tip for reassembly......the longer “d” sized bolts should be partially threaded into the motor and the runner before inserting it into the door. Those bolts then go through the holes and allow you to rest the motor and rail in position. Then lower the window glass onto the plastic mount, and then install all the “c” sized bolts and then tighten all bolts. Good video👍

Solid logic, address the problem, as well as the symptom, to minimize the probability of recurrence. Refurbishing the original motor not only saves money, but reduces unnecessary waste and resource consumption. Extraordinary thinking and presentation by the author.

A brilliant video of how to fix and not just replace. The master switch driver window on a corolla 2003 works intermittently. I remember disassembling the switch but I'm yet to take apart the door panel to investigate if the motor is an issue or if it is the switch OR if it is the window tracks. A project for the following week as you have given me some excellent points especially investigating on the switch aspect. I'll check em again and pull apart the window panel. Thanks for taking time and making this video.

    • @cityofangels11
      @cityofangels11 ปีที่แล้ว

I bypassed the master switch today and narrowed this issue down to most likely motor or possibly the slide track for the glass not being very smooth. Either way I'll have to inspect that once i open the door panel That is postponed for the next weekend.

A tip, should you need to take that motor back apart. The Armature contacts with the carbon tracking can be cleaned effectively with a simple pencil eraser, if you wish to get more aggressive, you can use a very fine grit (600) sandpaper. But a pencil eraser is cheap, available and leaves little dust. After cleaning with an eraser, use a chemical electric parts cleaner, Like CRC QD Electrical parts cleaner spray. I've repaired many motors this way. You did a great job!

8:15 That seems to be the really critical point, cleaning those gaps out very well, and cleaning off the face as well. I used a fine sewing needle for the gaps and spray electrical contact cleaner. Had mine apart a couple of times today trying to get some function working better. Until today, it was getting erratic, and sometimes not moving at all. First attempt at cleaning had very limited success. It would work but sounded very rough and quit frequently. Took it all apart again and cleaned it even more thoroughly, cleaned and greased the sliders... sounds and works much better than it has for quite a while.

Thank you so much! Your video is awesome and sooo thorough! I was trying to diagnose why the passenger window in our new to us van wouldn't go down. Using a test light I realized the switch worked and that the motor was getting juice. The window wouldn't go down though. Thanks to your video I knew exactly what I was in for when I took the motor apart. Mine had a ton of carbon flake build up. Once I cleaned all the black crap off the copper panels and pushed the brushes out as far as I could it worked good as new after it was all back together. The brushes in mine can only get pushed out so far though so I'm hoping I can find replacements! Thanks again!

Only started watching but I can already say the gears & shaft will be gummed up with rust/crap - take apart, clean, bish bash bosh it works again. Nobody much fixes stuff any more - they just swap parts. I'm waay too tight for that - I fix EVERYTHING fixable. :-) If the window switch mucks up - it too can be stripped, cleaned & re-assembled.

First of all, THANK YOU so much for the video and help. I had a feeling this "motor is bad" story from the dealer/mechanic was somewhat BS. I have a Tacoma that had an issue on the rear passenger side while still on a warranty, they changed the motor and said it was bad. A few years later when the warranty was up the other rear window did the same. As you and others advised, I checked the switch and I saw green built up on the pins, and under the contacts, so the rocker wasn't really operating properly giving no continuity. I don't have a fancy set up like yours but after cleaning it, magically it had continuity. I put a bit of petroleum jelly on the pins and in the switch as well to lube the rocking mechanism. BOOM saved 90 dollars from buying a new switch.
    Again THANK YOU

My drivers switch became stuck on the auto up ( sticky switch) and the motor burned out big time. The windings a blackened char. All the plastic below the windings and housing the brushes was a melted burned lump! What amazes me is it has 1 30amp fuse to cover possible use of all 4 windows at same time. The fuse did not go open and it allowed the 1 motor to draw so much current. I am amazed the car did not catch on fire. It flattened the battery ..but fuse was fine. I have put new switch and regulator/motor but intend to put an inline blade fuse circuit from before motor and hide it behind the small plastic triangle clip on liner above the door liner. Maybe experiment with fuse values to see what it will trip at when at most use next size up. Maybe test current use with meter first. These vehicles (dmax) have a problem with these switches. Does that sound sensible..? lol Love your videos. I refuse to buy new without attempting to fix it first. Disposable world ..sucks. Keep up the great work. Cheers from NZ

A lot of these newer power windows have their own fuse somewhere in the line usually behind the dash. Don’t just check the window fuse and think that’s the only fuse to check.
Edited: Refer to the vehicles electrical wiring diagram, usually found towards the back of the maintenance / overhaul / Haynes / Chiltons / Mitchell’s manual

Very nice video. I enjoy doing this kind of stuff... drives my wife nuts. Q? Is it possible that you had a short between 2 of the commutator plates (that piece of junk you removed with the pin could have been conductive?) that caused your OL code. Could you have checked for continuity between two commutator plates or are they all connected with copper wiring? Also, some folks may think that an errant switching mechanism may be due to dirty switches, when it could be the switch / motor need to be factory reprogrammed by holding the up button up for 5secs after it is up, and the same process for the down. Often you can hear a click when the up & down reprograms itself.
Finally, the manual never tells the tech... check the power to the switch 1st. Often it is the power ir ground wire going through the door jamb boot.

Thank you for the video! Very knowledgeable... I’m here in comments to ask kindly for guidance...
Hello my fellow car enthusiast friends :)
I’m diagnosing an issue with the passenger side window on my 2014 corolla, as well as the master panel on the driver side. The master panel only rolls down the driver window? It’s almost as if the window lock is stuck on, but as I sat in each seat and operated each switch individually, they all roll down, EXCEPT for the front passenger side...
As of now, I’ve tested power to the master panel, it has power to all 4 switches (2front 2rear) all the switches are good... I’ve tested power (using multimeter as well as test light) to passenger side switch, as well as up and down operation. The new switch is good. Also tested motor making sure power comes from switch to the motor, new motor is all good. But window still won’t operate? Sooo I tested for good ground, and again no ground issues...
Annnd sooo I ran a quick wire straight from my battery to the window motor, and it rolled my window up, yay :) I’m sure if I reverse polarity it’ll roll back down.
So again, everything is good, so why won’t it work? This is not a riddle. May I please ask my fellow car enthusiasts for some advice? Input?
I appreciate your time very much and if you have any questions as well, I’m moderately knowledgeable in some areas so feel free to ask and I’d be happy to help you out as well.
Thank you everybody, thanks for your time, take care out there my friends God bless and be safe.

Can't the brushes be removed and replaced with new? If so where would you purchase them?

    • @theoverengineer
      @theoverengineer  ปีที่แล้ว

Of course. In past repairs, I custom made brushes from bigger ones, cannibalized parts from other motors, ... depending on market, brushes may or may not be available.

That assembly should be in the $40 to $50 range on Amazon

Thanks for the video, it is very helpful, I found that the carbon brushes in my motor are completely damaged. I have a question, do you know if the carbon brushes can be replaced?

Brushes can be replaced or simply another bit added on top of, they all conduct electricity th-cam.com/video/K1sx2EYNjsI/w-d-xo.html

You should polish the commutator with a fine grit paper to remove the corrosion.

Great job the techs are notorious for that. Do you happen to know the location of my driver side window relay for 2012 hyundai veracruz? I cannot find any info anywhere
