Stuck Power Window Regulators/Window Won't Move (Honda)

  • In this video I show how I deal with power window regulators that are stuck and will not move. In this case the window was stuck in the Up position and would not come down. This is a common issue and dealing with the bolts that attach the window to the regulator can be tricky. This is how I deal with them. The exact vehicle in this video is a 2005 Honda Accord EX V6 two door coupe. Enjoy!

    Changed a few window regulators for different makes and models of cars, but never had one stuck in the up position. Keeping it simple in my goggle search, brought me to your video, omitting the make, model, & year( 02 Jeep GC). Previous searches were with vehicle parameters. Your video will now make my job a lot easier, and for a 75 year old, I need all the easy I can get.

      @@InquisitiveMind876 hey! I would try cutting the bottom cable for sure. It will be very hard as there will be a ton of pressure in the cable, but once it is cut the window should move with ease.

    Great video showing how to access and replace the regulator.
    However, based on my experience, you ALSO HAVE TO FIX THE ROOT CAUSE of the problem that caused the regulator to fail. If not, the new regulator may prematurely fail after one year...
    My 97 Civic is over 23 years old. In my case, I additionally had to PARTIALLY REMOVE the rubber window "run channel" (I only removed the left and right "sides" of the channel), CLEAN THE CHANNELS of accumulated dirt (I used cotton swabs soaked in "Goo Gone" but I guess soapy water would work as well).
    In addition, it was easy to completely REMOVE THE WINDOW from the door. Once removed, it was important to thoroughly CLEAN THE FRONT AND BACK EDGES of the window.
    Finally, I read that the "run channel" should be LUBRICATED WITH SILICONE GREASE. In particular, I read that Honda's Shin-Etsu Silicone Grease, part @-9013 should be used to lubricate the channels. My local Honda dealer price-matched another dealer's price; I paid $18.15 for one tube.
    Since I had gone through two regulators, each lasting only about one year, I GENEROUSLY GREASED the channel AND both sides of the window's left and right edges BEFORE REINSTALLING THE WINDOW.
    After re-assembly, the window moved up and down without any hesitancy. In comparison, the other windows moved much slower - so, I will do preventive maintenance for the other windows by removing the windows, and thoroughly cleaning the window edges AND run channel. Cleaning removes the accumulated dirt, which allows the window to move freely, and reduces the load on the window regulator motor and assembly. Hopefully, reducing the load on the regulator will prevent the regulator from failing again.

      Anytime you repair/replace something you should find the root cause of course. That being said, although run channels being dirty (and folded over) can cause problems these motors/regulators do not typically fail due to run channel issues (its the brushes/cables/plastic parts that wear out). Also, any quality silicone grease/paste will work, you do not necessarily need to buy the Honda grease for these. Thanks for the input.

    hi, I have an 05 accord, my passenger window is stuck, fully closed.
    So the motor recently broke, i bought a new motor/regulator for 35$ or so and put it in. It seemed to be working, but during the final inch or so when I would be putting it up, it slowed down. I parked my car for about an hour, and when I got back, it had already died again.. The switches still click, just no movement of the window. Did I put it in the grooves wrong and cause the motor to die or something? I have a new regulator here and ready to install, I just couldnt get my window down enough, so thank you for making this video. Im just curious if it was my fault for doing a bad install or what? is that a possibility?

      @@BigDog50001 I have disassembled the motor in place and after removing the rotor it was easy to push down the glass. After reassembling it the motor worked normally in both directions when testing it directly to a 12v supply. However when it's plugged in the car system it only goes up all the way, when pressed down it stops and when released the pressed down button it keeps going up. I've tested the plug of the motor and the button is working normally +12 and -12v when pressed/pulled. I'm beginning to suspect of the car alarm which has a window up when activated function. Are there any stock honda control modules for rolling up windows?

    Keep the quality content coming! I've got one for you: 05 Odyssey EX-L drivers side passenger window rolls itself down and wont roll up in the rain. Pull side panel and motor is hot to touch. Scan tool connects but window wont go up or down. Take power straight to window motor. Nothing. Replace window regulator (Honda parts only) and she works! Same damn day the same thing happens again. Ok, replace the multiplexer and switches on drivers door. Problem fixed! Well not really, 2 weeks later it happens again! IN THE RAIN. Any ideas?

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the comment! There is a Multiplex unit in driver's switch (control unit) and there is one in the under dash fuse box. Issues with a Multiplex unit can definitely cause problems (I would look for MICU/B-CAN DTCs).
      The Multiplex unit in the Driver's Switch has the ability to open/close the windows when a signal is received from Door Key Cylinder/Or from Keyless Transmitter, issues with signals from either of these can cause problems. There is also a rear Multiplex unit on those vans as well as multiple control units that are all interconnected.
      Water intrusion behind left rear panel can get into the electrical connectors and cause numerous Mulitplex issues (the C701 connector in particular). Removing left rear interior panel and spraying outside with water can show if it is leaking. Honda recommends packing the connectors behind there with dielectric grease. If there are any additional issues with headlights/locks/wipers/keyless entry/communication errors, this is where I would start.
      There are relays inside each passenger window switch, problems with these relays can cause issues (but generally only when Key-On power/Key Off Timer is activated).
      You will have to catch this issue in the act. There is a good chance the original motor burned out due to this issue. Spraying water on different areas of van separately and looking for issue (scan tools and test lights help) can help isolate where the problem is originating.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would unplug window motor and use a test light to see if there is power/ground getting to motor when the button is pressed (key on of course). If no power/ground then have to trace wiring back to where it is being lost. If power/ground is there, it may not have enough current flow to operate motor (voltage drop most likely due to corroded/bad wiring and or connections somewhere). This is where I would start. Problems with the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) and the relays can cause issues too.

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly, but more likely it is an issue with the cabling that goes into the window motor or the motor itself. More often that not the fix for that is to replace the window regulator/motor assembly.

    I cut the cable and the window still wouldn't go down. After an hour more of trying to figure out why, I jiggled it around a bit and it finally git past the point it was getting stuck at. I think it was getting stuck somewhere in the rubber track. I probably shouldn't have removed the four regulator screws before cutting the regulator/motor cable because the window probably couldn’t track properly after I removed those screws.

    Do they commonly all go at the same time? My daughter got a used Honda with 3 of 4 that won’t go down. It’s starting to get hot and she don’t have a/c. There’s no way we could do this without screwing something up.
    This doesn’t seem like a big money job (it seems like a nuisance job) for mechanics and we have no disposable income.
    I understand that if it’s not a big money job, auto profs don’t want to touch them (which I can understand to a point) but....I’m wondering... To avoid getting scammed into a ton of new or unnecessary repairs to make this nuisance job a big money job....is there something a customer like me could say or ask the professional while shopping around to make it seem like we are not easy pray?
    I am not looking for free or unreasonable, I just want to not get completely railroaded. Ty.

      It is common for window regulators/motors to go out on Hondas, but generally not all at the exact same time. If they all stop working at the same exact moment it is probably something else (like a relay or other electrical issue). That being said, I commonly see older Honda that have multiple non working windows because they went bad one by one and the owner did not fix them as they went out (probably due to cost). To avoid getting taken by a mechanic, I would probably try to fix/diagnose the most important one and go from there.

    Hope somebody answer my question (Honda Accord 2006). Can a glass window ran in its canals so bad to the point that burnt the electric motor? This question is because I just installed a new motor and regulator (combo) and it worked for a little while then burned fuse… after replacing fuse and with the window switch in my hands I connected the old electric motor (out of the window) and it runs perfectly. Now I ended with the window driver stacked all the way up just like in this video… but with a new part in it.
    Note.- If there is any video dealing with this same issue… can you post the link?

      Same guy here… I forgot to mention that the fuse never burned with the old electric motor which was OEM… while the new one is from AutoZone and cost less than $100 … also the cable of the old regulator got tangled and broken apart.

    How do you put a window up if the regulator has already been removed, and how does one not destroy the cable wires on the regulator to reuse it?

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The window regulator holds the window up on most of these designs, so if there is no regulator then it is pretty difficult to keep the window up without getting really creative (sticks inside the doors/tape on window etc.). You would not cut the cables if the regulator/motor assembly is good, this is only for when they are bad and the regulator/motor assembly is one single unit and needs to be replaced. If the motor/regulator was still good then you can move it down into position using power/ground where it can be removed normally.

      If stuck down, you have access to the bolts to remove the window from the rail. Do that, pull the window up manually and tape it into place. I'd personally cut a stick the right length and jam it in underneath for backup support.

  • @qrs3658

    is there anyways you can manually lower and raise the window? should have shown how you did the install

    • @BigDog50001
      @BigDog50001  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the motor does not work anymore, there is no real way to manually move the window other than cutting cable (which I showed) or removing the bolts that hold the window glass to the regulator (very difficult to access the window glass bolts when window is in the up position). As far as showing the install, that was not the point of this video, this was simply a tip video on dealing with window regulators when you can't lower the glass to access the bolts.
