This was my first vintage lens and it started my down the path of loving not only vintage lenses (especially Olympus OM and Takumar M42 lenses) but manual focus lenses in general. I have used the Pentacon on Fuji, Canon and Sony and have never been disappointed. It is a beautiful lens with great character. I particularly enjoy using this lens for Black & White - both digitally and on film.

The f/4 on this lens is amazingly useful, because often, you lose a lot of bokeh once you step down.
This is probably the next lens I'll get, just because the bokeh is next level cinematic (and is compatible with the F55, my dream camera)

I have had several copies of this lens in both PB(pratica mount) & m42. Earlier pentacon was caller Meyer Optik & they made some fabulous lenses with really rounded aperture blades. Basically Zeiss, Leica, meyer Optik, Voigtlander were cut from the same optical cloth and they gave us some really excellent lens designs & superb mechanics + great glass. The glass has changed now and the coatings have vastly improved & calibrated to the digital sensors but if one works out the right software profile then some of these lenses can really shine and bring out something extra. I use many of these lenses with the a7r4 - some more than 60 years old & it is always a revelation how good some of these lenses are as well as what amazing sensor modern technology we have

I love this lens! Got it 13-14 years ago with its original Praktica body for about 10€ and that's what I learned on, then I kept taking it with me on any camera with adaptors. Used it for films and for many types of commercial photography and it's pretty much indestructible. I got many different lenses now, the 29mm and 135mm from the same Pentacon series, old school Helios, Zeiss, Industar, modern ones both digital from Sony and cheap manual ones like Meike, but this 50 is still my main :)

These lenses were also manufactured in Romania, where I am from, during the old regime. I bought one myself, although at the time it cost about half a month's salary. It is better than the Helios lens, the image is clearer and more contrastsy. However, it has a very barrel-shaped distorsion, which is not easily noticeable.
I don't know what Pentacon lenses made in East Germany look like, but the ones made in Romania look exactly like one you presented (Romania had a fairly good optical industry, but after the fall of the old regime, it unfortunately disappeared).
These lenses are not much inferior to other famous lenses in the world, build according to the same optical scheme of 6 lenses.

@@PavSZ Yep. I was thinking if those don't exist (anyone find one?), maybe I'll get one that fits the EF and put that onto the Villtrox speedboost I'll be getting soon to fit nicer lenses on.
I can't imagine putting a basic ring adapter onto the Villtrox will be problematic. But that may be noob naivete talking. ;)

The lack of click-stops in your example means that it was either deliberately taken off, or the mechanism was lost during a previous service: after all it was effected by a tiny coil spring and a small ball bearing, just by removing the latter would get it "de-clicked".

You can modify aperture blades to make a triangle aperture. It give You unique bokeh. But modification is irreversible unless You have spare aperture blades. I think it applys only for lenses without "Multi coating" writing

I have a quick hack for any one with this lens. I did it without a tutorial: (don't mind my English, i'm rusty)
If you unscrew the mount (you dont need te be scared, its eazy and you can't break anything, unless you're some mad person using an electric screwdriver). Then you take of the mount and you can remove the apature ring. You'll find groves on the ring and on between one of those groves you'll find a small ball in/on the lens (well its tiny, not small :P). If you remove that ball you de-click it. Put it back together, that the biggest pain. Automatic is now manualon my lens, but i don't care.
    It's that simple!

I have had one of these since the 1990s. It came attached to a Praktica LTL 35mm SLR which long ago stopped working. However I kept this lens, and I return to it for film work. I use it on a Pentax Spotmatic and for video on my Lumix G9. One good thing about this lens is that it can focus almost down to macro level. Particularly on Micro 4/3 cameras. This is the lens I keep returning to and finding a new love for year after year.
