I am one of those "older" people you mentioned that still places TOS as "my" Trek. I grew up on it with the 70's reruns, and TNG was always second (though a really close second) I picked this one up even though I have not only the original Playmates version, but also the second release that has the recording function, the Diamond Select release, and the Wand company Bluetooth release. While it is probably true that there is not much of a kid audience for this, I will say my 11-year-old thought it was cool and wants it for himself. He may be an anomaly though. It is interesting that Playmates completely retooled these. They are different in every way to the original Playmates 1994 version. The big difference is that the grill is vacuum metalized on the original, so that shiny metallic gold is nicer than the matte plastic gold of the new one. The way the light hits the original makes it feel like it's got holes in the grill like the original prop. The other difference visually is the sticker on the original is made of a holo-foil sticker material. That actually brings some life to the dial face. The new one is very dull. The electronics are, no question, better on the new release. Lastly, I don't like the spring-loaded grill. Flipping it open with your wrist is half the fun of fondling one of these things. I could say more, but the bottom line is it could have been a little better for the price. Also, it's not fair to compare this to the Wand Bluetooth version because it was 8 times the price even though it by far is the gold standard as far as a replica goes.
in regards to ST:TOS if you're not already aware, but IMO Star Trek: Continue was a network television worthy fan film series. it basically continues the Enterprise's 5 year mission. it was so well done. it's premiere episode even brings back the original actor that played Apollo from the ST: TOS S02E02 Who Mourns for Adonis? in a continuation of that episodes fallout. well worth watching. imo.
I am actually younger, from the ENT generation, but ended up watching TOS first in my country for many Years (only one on the TV), over and over, until watched DS9, TNG and the others! Im def. interested in this one!
My communicator's in coming in the mail. I really hope Playmates brings back the TNG gear. I have the 90s originals (they're older than I am), but would love to see what they could do with modern tech. I'd also love to see a DS9/Voyager phaser and TOS Tricorder.
I'm so glad someone else noticed that. Although have you noticed that these days it's like the SFX designers have no canon between shows they just splurge sounds all over the place. discovery is the worst for this. Even though it's set much earlier, we'll use TNG and TOS and remakes of TOS sounds just.. koz :)
I have my 90’s version and the sound isn’t bad. The sticker in the middle is like the data-side of a cd. The antenna had a metallic shiny gold paint on it. It was one of my favorite toys growing up.
So, I have the original that I bought around 20+ years ago, and I compared it to the close ups in your video. I have to say that mine looks better cosmetically. The old grill looks metallic and has a shine to it while the new one looks like orange flat plastic. Also, the circular decal in the middle on mine has a slight hologram effect that I don't see in the video. Those seem like odd choices to me.
I own the running press mini version and this is a major improvement on that. I would have liked more voice clips maybe using the dial as a way to select which sounds the buttons play similar to the phaser. Hopefully if they bring out the original series tricorder some customiser brings out a stand to display all 3 roleplay items maybe with a place to put the enterprise on top
I had a version of the 90s toy from playmates, I bought the TNG phaser, the Bajoran Phaser too. The major differences were that the button that made the sound for opening the communicator didn’t swing open the antenna, the antenna was also shiny gold, there were no quotes from the show and the circle swirling thing was kind of reflective.
I finally found the communicator at Target today. They had 1. My only complaint is that they only used only used the voices of Captain Kirk and Mr Spock, but it fits nicely with my other communicators. I still need to replace my space talk that was also made by playmates, which allowed you to also record your own sounds along with the cast voices.
I'm only 50, but TOS is my home base. I grew up on '70s reruns and the TOS cast movies. Given you, Keith, were born in 1980, you probably were only seven years old when TNG came out. So that was Star Trek to you. Nothing wrong with that! It's just a generational thing. Had you been born in the early-to-mid seventies, you probably would have a very different attitude.
Like usual the old toy was much better than the new one. Why is the grill spring loaded? The communicator in Enterprise was spring loaded on the show and they toys, but not in TOS. The old toy the grill could flip all the way back so you could let it do that keep it forward with finger placement. Also I don't see many kids wanting these toys since the studio has now turned star trek into garbage. I got 3 of the Bluetooth versions, so not interested in picking up one of these unless it was almost identical to the original toy.
On the original when you moved it looked like the center disc rotated with different colors. The sounds are different as well. The lid felt like a light metal material, to open it the person had to flick it open much like on the show.
Great video on the TOS Communicator! The amore (sp), never did anything from the original 1994 version. The hailing frequency sound is more like Enterprise D hailing frequency sound effect from TNG. Glad it has a belt clip as the original didn’t have one. Is there a texture that is like leather for the black part?
Thank you for the review. I ordered this online arriving this week. I don’t own any other communicators so figured should act while the opportunity is available. Upon viewing this review I imagine I would paint the grill w a metallic paint. The moire thingy could probably be improved with custom alterations or a kit. I’m sorta hoping, in time, creative folk will build and offer kits to augment/improve on these. I mostly wish the actual form of the housing & antenna conform precisely to the originals. In this day and age with scanning tech and printing there’s _no_ reason for this product to not look identical (in shape if not material) to the originals at a glance.
good video ,i collected all the playmates figures, ships, role play in the 90s ,the shipping box is indeed very retro ,except that the original printing is in blue for the line i have a lot of them ,the selling point for me is the retro style ,and i got all the new stuff to date ,lot of fun ,thanx for sharing ,the clip is on the original as well ,the hailing sound is not from the classic series .from the next generation .
There were two models of the communicator that came out from Playmates in the 1990s. One was basically a version of this new one, but the other did allow you to record a short message (there was no other functionality, though; no chirp, no spring-loaded flip, no other sounds).
Being 46, I have the best of the first two eras, actually. TOS still had reruns going throughout the 80s (between that and a couple of books, I learned how to draw the original Enterprise; I also learned how to draw the refit/Enterprise-A between the movies, some books, and a few of the DC comics back then), and TNG came out in September 1987 - after I turned ten that June (though even to this day, the Enterprise-D is the bane of my artistic existence!!). I passed up on the Playmates toys of the 90s - aside from the Battle Damaged Enterprise-D that a friend of mine had, most of their stuff SUCKED. And this new version of the old stuff...apparently still sucks.😮😮😮
I have one of the original Playmates Communicators and to be honest, I was kind of disappointed with it. They could have made it much better without impacting the cost by more than a trivial amount. First, why not mold the top cover with holes in it? A little more work to create the master, but then it would save them a tiny amount of plastic on each one. Second, instead of putting the opening sound on an external button, why not put the switch inside and have it triggered by a bump on the hinge? And finally, I absolutely HATED the giant plastic belt clip. I would have preferred it if they have included a metal clip attached to the back with screws, so that it could be removed. I want to say that my original didn't have a spring-loaded cover, but I could be wrong about that. I thought you could open it by flipping it, but my memory could be playing tricks on me.
Nice review! I think Playmates need to push Star Trek: Prodigy and I think that will happen next year as Netflix roll out the second season of that series. This communicator and the Enterprise D are nice fillers for now but I agree, as a TNG kid, Playmates need to shift focus to the newer shows to appeal to both fans and kids.
DST's TOS Communicator is definitely better but this is just a toy. Not to mention the TNG hailing sound..... Why doesn't playmate just talk to somebody like me, who knows all the sounds and stuff.
Keith & Mike, Thanks! Once again a "GREAT" video! Thanks, for the first look! Can't wait to get my own communicator as well the Enterprise D. I hope the figures will be comes out soon? Maybe, the first of the new year. M.S.Holder (i.e Captain & Rev. of the starship U.S.S. HOLDER N.C.C. -7149
The 2nd round Playmates re-issues are not as good as the originals. First off, these re-issues have waaaay too many asembly screws/screw bosses. The worst offenders are the TOS PHASER pistol and the TOS Enterprise with the TNG Ennterprise-D toy a close second. They are more inaccurate thsn the original issues in different aspects. The rear power dial on the TOS PHASER does not light up, but does on the re-issued toy. The TNG Enterprise-D, Playmates could not detail paint the underside of the saucer? Really? They detail painted pretty much the rest of this toy except the underneath of the saucer! Also, on the toy TNG Enterprise-D, re-issue is the questionable choice of sound effects. The original issue had better sound effects. The re-issue of the Playmates TOS communicator looks somewhat better, but new details are inaccurate. The speaker/microphone plate is inacurrate, now as it is thinner in height. The outer shells are waaaay too shiny plastic, now. The original release was much more of a matte finish and but looked closer to the original prop than it does now. The internal frequency dial looks smaller and more accuate in the re-issues and the size of the light bulb/lenses look more accurate, also, in the re-issue. The choice of sound effects is just terrible, in the re-issue of the communicator. The oroginal issue of the Playmates communictor had the working button for the red alert light but with no sound effect ( this is totally accurate to the episode “Day of the Dove” ) In the original Playmates release of the communicator, the button that activated the green light had the sound of the sub sonic frequency sound used to bring down a piece of mountain side in the TOS Star Trek episode “Friday’s Child”. In the re-issue, this has been replaced by audio clips from the show. Also, in the re-issued TOS communicator, the communicator hail signal sound is, now, wrong and inaccuate. ALL of Playmates re-issued Star Trek toys have new issues/problems and new inaccuracies that the original issues of these toys didn't or had their own issues, as well. The stands for the ships even look cheaper looking! In many aspects, the original Playmates toys were better! The ONLY re-issue, so far, I might be interested in purchasing/obtaining, is the re-issue TNG Enterprise-D toy model. That toy model DOES have much better painted details and has a display stand, now. Light effects are better, as well. The sound effects are not great!
While I agree that it seems it could be slightly overpriced, I do think it looks like a fun toy to recapture some TOS nostalgia. By the way, appreciate all your reviews!
They really cut corners with all these current day retro style toys. I mean for the sticker to not even be holographic or lenticular is so incredibly cheap to me. Are today’s materials really that expensive?
We’ll see how satisfying the spring flip is when the latch breaks/ wears down. At least nowadays someone will step up and 3-D print a better part. As much as I love role-play toys I don’t think much of this. I’m probably alone in this but I would gladly forego the dialog clips for a few bucks cheaper price. I am very happy with my Art Asylum/DST props and still am frustrated they never made a TNG Tricorder.
I don't like the shine of the 2023 communicator I prefer the mate finish on the original one and the lid looks a bit more chunkier than the new one! I missed out on getting the original merchandise when I was younger and today they are to expensive to get hold of so I'll definitely get this one . I agree that the kidds of today wouldn't be interested in the likes of these Toy's because they have never seen the original show on TV! Playmates need to push the likes of prodigy Toy's and figures more towards children because its supposed to be for them anyway. Most young children watch more TV know so Playmates are missing out on the opportunity to get them more interested in the show.
I bought two of these. They are, by any definition, cheap crap. Full of inaccuracies. That having been said, they are fun cheap crap. I have built many TOS comms from kits, including the legendary JLong and DStines kits, which are the most accurate things on earth, and have a Wand TOS comm, but for $15 these playmates TOS comms were too much fun to pass up.
Same crappy sticker as the 90s, no holes in the lid. The sounds are horrible. Giving this a pass because it's "just a toy" is ridiculous. And dude, what is with you liking something because it's heavy? You will not give anything from Playmates a bad review because you want to keep getting free stuff. This is a missed opportunity.
To be fair… we were pretty meh about it and said it was too expensive for what it is… I don’t think this was a shill, but you’re def entitled to that opinion. We appreciate the dissent.
I don’t think any of us are shills for Playmates. I think we would like more products especially of newer stuff and never before done stuff. I like the older stuff too, but do that like they did for TOS boxed set in the 90s. DO NOT let that be your main line. Some of us really want stuff from Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds and Season 3 of Picard. Maybe now that the two Main Classic ships of TOS and TNG have been done a contemporary ship really needs to happen. Which ship should that be? Playmates dragged their feet so long with the Protostar I’m not sure if that should be what they go with. Maybe a Voyager A?
I forgot to add I have been getting Fidget Spinner level enjoyment out of opening and closing my 2023 TOS Communicator! I know our iPhones and Androids make the thing look like a joke but I have at least fifty apps that don’t give me anywhere near the satisfaction of that flip and chirp!

The "Hail" sound is inaccurate, That sound was from the TNG.
You are right it should be a beep
You would think by now they could make a real communicator that works. I blame Trump.

I've seen dozens of comunicators at Target but have only seen the 1701-D once.
How about the Captain Pike Enterprise from Strange New Worlds? New figures and not the rehashed ones from the 80s and 90s?

Would make a great cosplay prop but I would have to agree that it is a bit pricey.
Definable directed towards a older fan rather than kids.
I just wish they poked the holes through the antenna.
