  • Portmeirion, Wales, was used by the 1960s cult TV series "The Prisoner", featuring Patrick McGoohan.
In 1925, Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis acquired the site which was to become Portmeirion. He had been searching for a suitable site for his proposed ideal village for several years and when he heard that the Aber Iâ estate near Penrhyndeudraeth was for sale, he did not hesitate to make an offer.
Being made famous by "The Prisoner", Brian Epstein began staying here in the '60s in successive summers, where he could find some respite from Beatlemania. He was staying here when the whole "Bigger than Jesus" crisis reared his head and he had to cut his holiday short.
George Harrison was also a fan and stayed here for his 50th birthday too.

I loved the Prisoner. Went there in the early 70s, then again the late 80s with my wife and kids. Didn't realise the Beatles connection. Nice one. Its a shame they didn't film a video there.

+Steve Kirby It is a great place. Which song do you think they could have filmed there? Here Comes The Sun? What else?

Greatly enjoy your mini productions. Was fortunate enough to live the decade that was the 1960s. All I can say without nostalgia tinted glasses, is that were it possible, I'd teleport back to the 1960s in a heartbeat the way the world is today. Not so keen on doing so in this skin suit taking these old bones with me though. = ].

+The Blytonian I can relate to that! although I was born in the 1960s I would love to be able to go there and witness some of these amazing events.

@@BrightmoonLiverpoolIt was an incredible decade. Nothing like it since. Though not yet a high school teen in late 1962 when The Beatles rose to initial prominence, I was old enough to appreciate and enjoy the whole ride.

Spoiler "alert"? That's what you're supposed to give BEFORE revealing the spoiler. Still, that last Prisoner episode went out in 1968, so there's no "fall out". 😆Interesting Beatles links and nice footage. The Prisoner comes across as a '60s take on Kafka's 'The Trial', with added glamour and unpleasantly raucous music?

+mustafa1name Oh yes, will give the spoiler alert earlier next time! Maybe 1968??? 😂 The Prisoner was very 1960s and not one I personally have seen much of. Good for its time and it is still so popular now. Thousands visit Portmeirion every year to celebrate the show.

mate... i love ALL your videos, but the music in this one doesn't fit with the greatness of the video!... had to mute the sound!....It's terrible with a Capitol 'F' !

Another connection is that two of the actors that star as #2 in the series are also in Help!

David, yes Hear Comes The Sun would have been a good one. As there's so much colour there maybe something from Sgt Pepper like Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, or A Day in The Life.

+Steve Kirby It would have been perfect for Lucy in the Sky, with the river at the bottom of the hill.

Thank you I enjoyed that and really appreciate the effort you put in to making it. Good to see Portmeirion doing well, I was there in the late 1980s and it seemed a bit down on its luck. Well worth a visit I agree with you.
