Hi Vivi, I have been sewing for over 70 years. I have had many mentors and teachers sharing their knowledge with me. In all of that time, no one has ever suggested using an "inverted square" to determine the placement for cutting the fabric as desired. I am forever grateful for the making of this video and I will teach my daughter, and she with her sewing group, and so it goes on. Blessings to you always and I wish you the best of luck in your "new home search" and acquisition of same.
I made a few quilts when my children were little. Then I got into paper. Oh my! There’s so much potential for an addiction to collect if we’re not careful-just like books and fabric. Great tips, Vivi. And although I’m too busy nowadays for paper projects, everything you said applies to paper as well.
Me too! Vivi and my other favourite youtubers are my therapy! Her voice, her turn of phrase, her positivity and her wisdom are balm for the soul, for me, over and above the topic or focus. I'm so thankful for the person she is.
For a small item it shows how much planning and thought goes into the process before you even start with your cutting out, assembling etc never mind all the cutting, drying and processing your lavender for the bags. I bought one of your lavender bags years ago and love it. Heather
Thanks for explaining this, Vivi. Doing this craft fills me with fear as I never fully understood and so aborted the project and went to one I felt more comfortable with 😂😂😂
OMGoodie goodness ,Vivi! You’ve triggered a massive long forgotten memory bank of pattern matching fiddly stripes, tartan plaids & print repeats! Remember the extra yardage for plaids and one direction fabrics (velvet) on the backs of paper patterns? Yikes! I loved the challenge of laying out a complicated pattern in the least wasteful way. To this day it grates my eyes to see an unmatched pattern on an upholstered piece or a stiff shirt or jacket! It reeks of “cutting” corners! May your sewing hours be “piece”ful! ❤️❤️❤️
Hahaha....cheers lovely. Yes, memories of dress-making days and never choosing a pattern with too big a repeat/strips/plaids etc.....way too much fabric needed for a decent match up of seams etc. 😉
For those big pattern fabrics that are so pretty, an idea could be neck warmer/hot pads. I love craft fairs and many quilters or crafters create a rectangular sleeve that they put long grain white rice in with lavender that can be heated in the microwave or radiator to use for those little aches and pains. They are like warm hug. Just a thought, my love. Beautiful video! Loved seeing the patterns. Cotton is my favorite 😍
I don't mind listening to familiar information - it's always interesting to hear someone else's perspective! And I didn't know Liberty lawn was called tana lawn. And I laughed when you said "taking coal to Newcastle". I knew Immediately this must mean selling snow to the Eskimos!
I absolutely love this video. Always wanted to do this sort of thing Vivi but I'm scared of sewing for goodness sake! I brought a sewing machine a couple years ago but gave up when i broke the needle - this video as inspired me to try again. On the plus side, I agreed with everything you said about clashing colours & paterns etc before you said it! hurrah!. Please please more vids on this subject please :0)
Beautiful and compelling! It all makes sense now, since you told us in your Q&A about your art school background, that you create such stunning items, and have such an amazing eye 🎨
I have only recently made a few scrappy quilts but still new to sewing. You are a natural teacher and I loved this video and your lavender bags are so pretty. I hope you make more sewing videos in the future. 😊
Thanks for this amazing video, Vivi. What may seem super simple to experienced folk...to those of us who are new to fabrics, this is valuable information. I have always wanted to make a simple skirt, material bought, pattern bought; I then cannot understand much of the info on the pattern itself and I've done this way too many times now and still don't have that simple skirt to wear!!
@@WhatVivididnext Oh, that will be smashing, Vivi. It's the same as pattern sizing🤔 I buy one with my size on it, then it gives further instructions and measurements as to the size when made up??? It's all confusing to me🥴😆
I often show those new to using fabrics to pick out one fabric they love ( speaking of being in a shop) then they can look at the edge of the bolt of fabric where there are little color dots down the edge. There is one dot of every color used to make the fabric so they can look at other fabrics carrying the first piece - the one they love - to find something with one of those colors in it. Once found they can then consider the scale of the shapes on it. It does help the shopper feel more confident about what works together.
Hi Vivi, thanks for your lovely colourful video. I’m sitting watching it now, feeling very sorry for myself! We have a beautiful new Granddaughter born on the 17th Sept. I came down with the flu the same day! I’m still too ill to meet her, and I’ve also missed two more grandchildrens birthdays as well! Hoping this clears up soon, then plenty of cuddles! I’ve made lavender bags this year, with our own lavender, and our SIL sold them on her craft stall, all money going to Parkinson’s UK. I loved making them, and the house has smelt lovely for days! When I’m feeling better, I’m going to sort through my fabric stash. Some I inherited from my mum, so lots of vintage stuff! Thanks for sharing. Greetings from a very wet Essex❤️
Quite interesting… I’m not much of a machine sewer…. I can thread a machine and do small projects like sewing aprons but that’s about the extent of it….….. I admire those who can turn fabric like magic into just about anything 😏….I do make dream pillows ✨✨✨but I pretty much always hand stitch them. I also do some slow stitches and need to consider a lot of these points when making them as well… Great tips! Love your Lavender bags 🥰🥰🥰 I bet they smell awesome 🤩
Lovely range of fabrics there..I love Tilda and the makower ranges for mixers , tana lawn is good for applique.. Just in the process of making a scrappy quilt. I make my bunting slightly different to you using squares and a bit of 'origami' ... and.... I make alphabeti bunting that can be re used. I applique letters onto the bunting like happy birthday ( name) and make letters for the other family names and popper the bunting triangles on to the band, then the letters can be re arranged... great fun.
I enjoyed this video. I just love deciding which fabrics to use and where when I'm quilting. Sometimes I get it wrong and have to discard some pieces and other times it sings which is very satisfying. I've never used a colour wheel, but I'd be interested to get one and try to use it.
What a timely video !!!!!!!!! I have never made a quilt but have been bitten by the ‘bug’ . Shopped this morning for fabric and a ruler. No charm packs to be found , so need to cut my own squares. Left the rest of the supplies behind as too expensive all at once. I’ll buy as needed. Your video gave incentive and inspiration as well as info on fabrics … Have been watching tutorials for very beginner quilt making…your fabrics are lovely . I wish I had watched this video before I shopped . I ended up purchasing quarters to cut . Great sale. Your tips are enormously helpful. The patterns I have are sort of ‘Krazy quilt’…you just answered my questions I’m using g 4x4 cutting ruler as a template …🤞🤞🤞 ❤x Marilyn
Some folk do and some folk don't. I always wash any fabric bought second-hand/thrift store/charity shop. The argument for prewashing is to allow for any shrinkage before sewing......but that has never been a problem for me (cool wash makes the difference possibly?). I would be more inclined to prewash in dress-making for a particularly fitted garment.
Wonderful video! I love to sew lap or baby quilts. BUT, I am very color challenged. None of my colors seem to go together. I end up using a lot of black (my favorite color, don't judge LOL) which isn't very cherry for a baby quilt. I tell myself the black sets the other colors off. I also tell myself my quilts are Amish themed so all of my black works. I lie to myself a lot. I can spend hours in a fabric shop and walk out with nothing because of color. I love that gray/rose striped fabric. Would make a great border or binding.
I don't buy fabric because I can't use a sewing machine. But I like to look in fabric shops anyway, and daydream about what I MIGHT make if one day I acquired some dressmaking skills 🧵🪡👗
When I learned how to quilt a few years ago, one teacher showed how your "view" of a fabric could change according to the way, and the size that you cut it. I have used fabrics that I wasn't too keen on as small accents in quilts and they have worked very well. Sadly I can't see well enough now to cut (I value my fingers) or sew but I still look longlingly at new fabrics. The only tip I would give is to not use flannelette material (brushed cotton) for quilting as it is too loosely woven and stretches out of shape. I did make one, and it is one of my favourites (so snuggly) but my goodness there was a lot of swearing involved in the cutting and making. I finally cut down my lavender (and rosemary). A friend had some for her lavender bags, and I always hang some in the house somewhere. A sure sign Autumn is on it's way - better get the flannel quilt out.
The joy you find in fabric is contagious! Happy sewing, Cowgirl.
Yay! 😊
Nice yellow fabric and pink fabric too
