    Absolutely brilliant repair, The mode switch really is a difficult one to get to on these units, it takes a Gifted electronic engineer as you truly are to get this repair done, Incredible film giving true insight and techniques to carry out such a difficult repair procedure, Excellent thank you.

      I was sooooo happy that I got out when I did. Now I don't have to do this. When I did it for a living I didn't have a choice. Now I can say toss that piece of crap in the trash and buy a new one. I do it now for fun, and to educate others on how to fix things. This is more enjoyable now as I am not under pressure to do this. I do it on my terms. That's why this VCR I found 2 years ago went into storage because 2 years ago I wasn't motivated to do it. The only reason I revisited this was after the first one, the mode switch causing the fault I was thinking that this one may have the same fault as the symptom was similar and it was. So now I have another machine for archiving tapes and I will be using this one.

You're a glutton for punishment man, and i envy your ability to store projects for "a few years" as-per-description without incurring major hassle about the damn mess!!! Isn't it always the way the second time round on a job, you've just done one so this oughta be a cakewalk right? Should take half the time, but it always seems to throw up unexpected twists to make the second one take as long if not longer than the first!

    As always great in depth video. You can dub from VHS to DVD if you go though the settings menu, by default the dubbing mode is VHS to DVD. If you change from the dubbing mode to DVD to VHS you should be able to dub back to VHS. Great signal processing on these combos however prone to crap out easily.

      It is the root cause of so many faults. The optical mode detection sensors caused as much if not more trouble. They would go intermittent as the light level from the LED started to drop.

      I was just pushing the lock levers to allow it to load without a tape (the tape pushes these lock levers when you push in a cassette. It must of stressed you out a lot originally, i understand you not wanting to bother with it but you won again :-D.
    I do understand the lack of interest in some repairs, i've left electronics standing because i just didn't have the interest/drive to bother with it.
    i've also had things that i could not figure out and on another day i've took a different angle of attack and fixed the dam thing.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That happens all the time. I start on something and get frustrated with it, then put it away picking it up months or years later and solving the mystery. In this case the first time down the road the drum and capstan motor was dead so I was thinking power problem. Then I found a disconnected plug which suggested that someone else had been in there, and it may have been cold or hot, and I didn't feel like continuing, or I had some paid work to do so I stuck it aside for a rainy day. I get the twin in, and by fluke it has the same fault. Capstan and drum dead. Then the drum started and the capstan started turning backwards. That symptom suggested mode switch, as I have seen weird problems caused by it so many times. Sure enough the mode switch was the root cause on both units.

    • @zx8401ztv
      @zx8401ztv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think i may of said this before but i had a possesed vcr that would play a tape fine but it would suddenly decide to jump into forward fast for no reason.
      I found it comical, the machine was bored with the film :-D
      Yup it was the mode switch, it was such an odd effect.
      After that i cleaned every one, just to make sure.
      No logic failures after that.

    Thanks for the video. Someone gave me one of these, there's still less then 25 hours on it, (nothing wrong). I can say for sure it's not the worst DVD recorder I've used; but mine has a slightly funky uneven black recording level that I wish also was lower. But at least all the features I tried seemed to work and its own firm ware doesn't crash, and it doesn't write discs that glitch or crash as far as I've seen (like those hilariously awful tru-tech machines do). I want to know if it's using Y/C between the tape and disc.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you can NOT dub copy protected disks. You can of you plug another vcr in and run through a tbc or macro scrubber first. I put this one is service in my studio and there are other limitations. For example the hdmi only output the dvd not the VCR. So to view vhs tapes it must be connected by composite as well as hdmi. Naturally the DVD player will also output from composite. If you play a tape, the hdmi and component outputs continue to show the tuner video unless you put in a disk and hit dub. Then and only then does the video from the VHS show through. Even with that limitation though it allows me to remove 1 piece of equipment from my office. It will be well used.

Now I get an "L7" code on the VCR window of the unit and cannot find what this means. I lost original manual and the 2-page one I found on line has no troubleshooting codes. Also tried just "taping" to a blank DVD something from my cable unit I had recorded and unit tells me "can't record to DVD" (it was a Memorex DVD+R DL). These is not much I can do with these. Unless it is something like a power supply issue. If they aren't burning disks correctly it is usually the laser and I have no access to parts or service data.

    Hi Dave, you are either a glutton for punishment....or a MAN on a MISSION. I have an old Samsung DVD-V5500 which does not play DVD videos. It will play CD's and tapes OK. Is it a def. dual laser or do the disc players also have a MODE switch ? Thanks J K

      You would put the disc in and the player would know what type of media it has to read, sounds like your laser is worn out.

    I have the same model that doesn't rewind or fast forward VHS. Based on this video th-cam.com/video/Eevo1HExRIw/w-d-xo.html and one of the comments suggest, replacing the motor belt will fix the problem. However, as I watch your video, it looks like it's very difficult to replace the belt on this device. Is it even possible to replace the belt?

      @@12voltvids Thanks for your reply. The strange thing happened when I was trying to fix it. After taking the top off, I gave one more try playing a vhs, and voila it worked this time. All I did was spinning those two knobs that rewind and fast forward vhs with my fingers. It's really nice that I don't need to go too far to fix it, but at the same time, it makes me worry that the same problem would happen again? My only guess is maybe those things were stuck since they haven't been used for quiet a while? Is it even possible? Thanks.
