Ken, Many of us were saddened when we heard about the fire, We wondered if you would survive the heartbreak of loosing something you put so much of your heart into. We love seeing the passion you put into each project you take on. I personally live vicariously thru you, as I don't have the time, place or money to do projects like you do. I am so glad you have decided to dig back in to this project, even if it hurt our hearts to hear it dragging thru the gravel to get it into the shop. I feel that you also feel that way and will bring her back better than ever. Thanks for your vision, your talent, and your sense of humor.
wow.. mighty kind words there... thank you.. yeah. this one broke my heart.. I still have the passion but I don't have the unlimited funds that I had back when I built it.. so it will take me a while but I think I can get there.. Y'all might have figgered out by now .. Ol Waylon aint got no "quit" in him haha.. take care and thanks so much!
Marketplace unsupervised? Oh Ken, that ken be dangerous! On a more serious note, I felt joy in my heart when I saw the caption, "Let's tear it down." I want to encourage you to never lose your determination to overcome obstacles. We all look forward to your journey. Blessings to ya!
It was this build that got my attention to your channel, on account of loving the 39 to 47 Dodge truck. I just may be addicted to your content! I was heartbroken when I saw what happened. On the other hand, I love the idea of watching more videos that get into the nitty-gritty of the "dodgalack". Your pain is my gain, I'm sorry to say.
After watching the first few minutes of this video. I thought it would come in handy to have a shackle attached to each side of the rear cross member, so that you could attach a chain from the tractor. Keep up the good work we preciatcha!
You're not lying about the views...that mountain range is impressive. As for the other type of views, I can't understand why you don't get more likes. Your videos have never failed to entertain me. If I might offer a piece of #totallyunsolicitedadvice, I would replace every gasket and seal I suspected of fire damage, especially since you're pulling the engine anyway. This series will take a minute or 5, but it will get done, and with the revisions you make, the Dodgillac (correct me if I misspelled it) will be better than ever.👍👍
What brought me to your channel in the first place was your family oriented content. The way you helped your grandson with his Brat was awesome. Us older guys know a little about everything, and you, sir, are a jack of all trades, a master of none, and can admit you make mistakes. A true treasure of a human. God bless !!
I wasn't a subscriber when you built this rat rod. Now I get to see you disassemble it and rebuild it. You'll be able to use your talents that you learned from your other projects and make this one even better. Thanks for sharing with us. Cheers
I've been watching for a few years but I didn't see that build..I think that rat rod is the coolest one you have fixing it is a given. I had one burn it was heart breaking, but I'm still driving it..
That was some fire my friend. Glad you didn't get hurt and saved the garage. A lot of work ahead, but I'm sure you'll chip away at it and will have er up and running and lookin good and ratty as it should. I'm rootin fer ya!!
I recently completed a master bath remodel where I blew it clear back to the floor joists and wall studs. The theme was 1900 to 1945 industrial so the toilet, shower and countertop/sinks are modern but everything else is old industrial. Valves, brass, electric disconnects with exposed contacts switching 12 volt LED lights, corrugated tin ceiling with exposed ceiling joists, massive bare steel under the countertop/sinks. I'm an old guy like you and like you I work alone. It took me a year but like you I loved using my mind and my imagination. The result couldn't have been better. Your rebuild will be better too.
Glad ta see ya got yer mind (and your heart) right to get back on this piece of art! I started watchin back in the early days of this build. My two cents- I was gonna say get her up in the air as best ya can and get her rolling, it’ll be in and out of the shop many times and ya don’t want to be groaning in the back of yer mind ever time ya gotta move it. I’d block it with some wood front and back, full up. Next is wash the black stuff off, 3 or 4 times, that’s stuff is gonna be everywhere and we don’t like listening to the dryer runnin in the background 😉. Pull all the damaged stuff of and make a list as ya go. Maybe a white board and some markers, no to be fancy like some of those other channels but just to see some progress as ya go along. I see it as a three part job, 1 front suspension, 2 general mechanical stuff, 3 electrical….4 sheetmetal and body stuff so four, yea, a four part job. I would probably jump around on those just to keep my interest up but it does help to divide the elephant into smaller bites. I’m sure we’ll all be watching and pointing out what your doing wrong along the way 🤓
You are on the right track keep up the good work and the right attitude and you will be fine and you will have it torn down to where you can figure out what all you have to do and replace and redesign to build it back better !!!
My First Video Of Yours Was When You Bought This Car -------- It Was A Pink Caddie I Think -------- This Makes Me Sad ! ---------- Rebuild The Motor ------- Paper / Rubber / Gaskets The Hard Parts Should Be Ok If No Water Got In The Motor -------- That Was The Coolist Rat Rod I Have Ever Seen ..--------
I feel for ya Cuz ... lot of work. But that's your baby ... gotta show the baby some love. Now is your chance to do all those upgrades. It's sad when you first built it that one guy said that the copper tubing exhaust is a hazard to your health. Maybe now he would say ... yep ... copper tubing ain't that bad. 👍
I won't lie Sir, it made shed tears when I found out what had happened. I searched for you for several weeks on here and even asked other TH-camrs about you. None answered that I knew about :( I know it bothers you because this old iron becomes part of you, heck what am I saying it's part of me too. I can't afford to do this for myself because I don't have a shop or anything so I just love watching everything you do. I know you sure put your heart into your work and I cannot even begin to understand why you have 9000 views and only 2000 likes. I mean really people PLEASE SMASH that like button. Thank you for sharing your daily life with us.
It's always enjoyable when You allow us to visit Your shop Ken. I think if You are going to have Waylon skindive this as far as You are, You are going to be sad if You don't go through the engine enough to be comfortable seeing it in there. Good buy on the Subaru engine, it's money in the bank now. Thanks again for everything. Best Wishes to everyone at Coates Grafting, their Families and Friends. ¡ Ola Victor ! ¡ Feliz Cinco de Mayo Amigo !
Waylon, you are an awesome, upstanding man 👍, just love the Channel! We think alike on alot of things in car world, Always great content my friend, God Bless you Brother! I came to your channel by the mention of none other than Mr Hevy Chevy, probably 5 years ago.
It seems to be a self-reinforcing thing, every time I get rid of something I haven't needed in years, a few days go by and then I need it. It's hard to resist becoming a hoarder. Good luck with the rebuild of the rat rod, and I'll be excited to see the square body back from the painter. All the best to you.
Waylon God Bless your efforts on getting this jewel back up and road ready and show worthy again, I always try to hit likes because I truly appreciate your old iron salvage heart😊, Kind of understand too the emotional baggage of this this rebuild (actual you had 2 of these in recent history) - praying for Gods Speed in the rebuild!
I'd pull the engine and re-gasket the whole thing. Seems like the time and chance to do it with the front end off. Better safe than sorry, later. I don't like doing things twice either! (but it happens) It's good to see you start back into this one. Long project, yes.... worth it... Oh YES!
Thank you for sending me to Balin wires old iron. I think that’s gonna be my new favorite channel. That guy is a genius. I don’t know what his name is unless it’s Baylon. It looks like they live in the most beautiful place in the country Helena, Missouri.
Good Sunday afternoon everyone. Waylon thanks for the update and video.🔨🪛🛠️🔧 Remember everyone through the traials and tribulations of this old world. Jesus Christ is the answer through it all. ✝️🙏💪
Your Ol'girl is a little sick right now, but sure enough you will fix her up doc! As far as the gaskets are concerned, I be worried about the rear main seal becoming distorted from the heat, it might be OK or might not, tough call, if you are replacing most of the gaskets, might as well do them all.
i know.. i doubt the rear main is hurt.. the fire wasn't near it.. but everything else may be shot.. I wasn't thinking during the filming but of course the motor mounts are burnt up too
Well, Ken, this one seems more daunting than the old square body!! I would air up them tanks and lift that machine ........ then maybe more investigation. Maybe the engine seals are ok!! Wouldn't that be something. Clean it up and see how it looks!! Ya can't be in a hurry for sure!! Nice score on the extra Subaru engine!! 👌
I’m glad you’re fixing her up. I really think it’d be the smartest move to pull the engine and give it a complete seal and gasket set. But that’s enough armchair quarterbacking. No matter what you do, I’ll be watching and rooting for you!
Hey Waylon I did not find your channel until about the end of the build of this truck so I am getting to see stuff I missed out on. Thank you for doing the rebuild in a way that allows some of us to see some of what we missed. I may not comment on every video I view but I do make a point of hitting that like button. I am glad I can at least do that for ya.
I'm glad to see you starting to work on this. I will have to put my vote in for pulling the motor, and taking it apart. Then you will know that you can depend on it. If you make it a roller, like you said, you can move it out of the way so you can work on something else. Take your time, it doesn't have to be finished right away.
Great video! Looking forward to seeing your burnt rat rod all fixed up! … and am interested to see if that spare Subaru engine will be used in something! Cheers, Rick
I would bet the pan gasket and rear seal are ok. You know better than we do as you see it better. I did fix up a burnt tractor with an engine fire and remarkably the seals were ok, just replaced the wiring and away it went. Thx
I am so sorry my brother, This is the kind of heartbreak that just diesn't go away. The loss of a labor of love is the worst. But I know you'll bring her back, and better.
Like the saga of Odysseus. Only his dog remembered him when he got home. Maybe Josh the cat will hop up on the front seat when Dodgeillac makes it home.
I can see this being another one of your great adventures. Yeah! it's gonna take a while and I gonna learn plenty. Somehow, with you making all the decisions it's gonna seem like it ain't work but more of a enjoyable "HOBBY". I do know that this project is gonna be interesting. ... ... "One Bite At A Time"⁉
After hearing you tell the story of fighting the fire, my first thought was if you had a shutoff switch on the rear panel area that could have been handy.
Last time I helped someone wire a street rod the guy wanted to run each wire individually... I told him no. Get 2 2x8 foot pieces of plywood and place them and to end on sawhorses. Draw your wiring diagram then transfer each part to the plywood (knowing that things like lights need extra wire to be 4 to 6' apart). Then start running all your grounds along the board, then run all your hots in different colors making it easier to trace wires, like red/red with a stripe for back lights, stripes being left side, blue for backup etc etc etc. You can put wire loom over all the wires as they lay on the board, or zip tie them as needed. THEN move your complete harness to the car running it thru holes where needed... You will end with a much neater and easier to fix harness, and you will have a wiring diagram you can place in a zip lock then stash in the car somewhere...
Seeing the bushings are burnt out of the control arms and it looks like the drain plug gasket is even partly melted out of the oil pan. I would say pull the oil pan off go through it and reseal it. The rear main seal should be fine or less flames or heat got up to it.
Thank you Ken for sharing your journey (life) !!!! I pray you stay safe and God bless you and yours !!! Try not to stress out and as Johnny Cash sang, " One Piece at a Time" !!! Appreciate you my Friend !!!! Eddy
I had the same problem years ago with a 79 honda civic. It had ran hot and I had head serviced couple times and replaced the head gasket each time still getting water in oil. Finally pulled the block and had it planed and that solved the problem. It was an aluminum block, not sure if the subaru block is aluminum or not but if it is your block surface might be warped.
Personally, I would pull and polish the engine, shine up those brass pipes, and leave the rest. She's earned that patina! Don't get discouraged; our mistakes keep us humble!
if you love what you do it's not work. When you built him the first time it turned out great. Now you can change it up and I'll bet he comes back even better. I'll be watching Take care.
I'd forgotten about the Dodgelac fire, and as it's only my second video since getting back from France on Friday, it has lowered my good mood a little, but you're not afraid of a little hard work old friend so you'll soon have it back better and stronger than before, by the way when in France I saw a couple of those tall field fans, couldn't tell what the crop was but they were electric not engines, saw some fine old american stuff over there both running and ripe for restoration or rodding.
When stuff like this happens to me (& believe me it has), I look at it as what I like to call "an engineer's blessing." It gives the post-heartache opportunity to rethink styling cues, occasionally even inspired by the event itself. Sheet metal can bend/warp in unpredictable ways, & then that little lightbulb pops on over one's head. Been known to happen. Also provides a chance to put in access doors for hard to reach fasteners, etc. Refits can be awesome. Just sayin'. On a related note, you were totally correct to bring her in sans pressure wash. Makes post-incident failure analysis way easier & more effective, because you can see carbon/dirt/etc trails & such. Maybe there was a secondary or even tertiary factor that no one could've predicted, but now is plainly visible? Should prove interesting.. 🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐
🇺🇸👍 I’ve watched your shows for years now learned a few things and yelled at you (the screen)why you doing it that way . I want to say you have had more then your share of bad luck, but I am here to say that’s all over, just gotta fix stuff now and that’s not bad luck that is what your show is about. So here is to your good spirit and knocking it out even better then before.🥛🍪👍
its sad but ken you love it and we all love you ken So chin up and keep on keep in on we with ya all the way the show must go on BEST wishes and its time for sum good luck
I would pull the motor. Not because of the oil pan gasket but to change most of the gaskets for peace of mind. You might want to paint or clear coat some of the burnt bits. Happy and safe wrenching.
I'm sure it was and will be painful doing it again, but I'm just as sure you are going to be grinning and staring at it with the same love all over again! Okay it's not a new build but think of it as 2.0 🤔
Ha Ken . I have a vapor blasting unit . I can get those valve covers looking good again along with the air scoop . I'll do them up for you if you want . Let me know . Just something from me to you for what you do for us ...
Totally understand not like doing things over especially after spending so much time on it before. Kinda takes the wind out of your sails. I had a car on jack stands once for 4 years. First time out it was flawless until that same day I parked it in a parking lot way far away from anyone and when I came out of the store I could see a shopping cart leaning against it. Put a nice big dent in the fender. Its like why do we even try sometimes. Your not alone my friend.
Oh God yes everyone hit that like button because we need to keep him being able to afford to keep making videos and hopefully nothing will happen to any of his other cool rides
Nothing better than a back up plan , for the back up plan . That was money well spent , on an engine , that's getting harder to find . Oh boy , looks like the scene of the crime . That ceiling sure matches the char on that car . Yikes ! That was even worse than I thought , Ken ! Thankfully the Good Lord is a Fan of your channel here , & you had the where-with-all to realize the problem , feeding the bigger problem , that being a gas fire , & shut it off ! Hallelujah ! Good save ! Assess the situation . You still have a car , & a garage to work on it in . So , let's see what We see . Aside from the peripherals , & suspension , the engine should be fine . Ain't leaking , or seeping . Won't know , until you run it . Maybe a great time for those upgrades . I'm thinking it isn't as bad as it looks , Waylon . Mostly bags , suspension parts , hoses , some wiring , a tire , gaskets , carbs , headlights , & a fuel pump . A ton of cleaning , but it will live again ! Pretty slick , airing up them tanks to get the rear off the deck . Take your bath a month early ? Lmao ! Ya , I reckon a good power washing might have prevented such a catastrophe .🤣Lord have mercy ! We love ya , & sure do appreciate ya , Ken . Even more now , than before this video post , as that was a closer call than most of us knew . You can always make them better , & I'm thinking you will . It's a thing of beauty , that rig . God Bless !
Man i hate this for you. But ive got confidence in you. I watched you build this truck. Mater of fact its how i found your channel. That's been a few years back. But If I were you I'd replace the gaskets while you're that close. At least valve cover gaskets and front timing seal and oil pan gasket. Those valve covers will clean up in a blaster cabinet

Really pleased to see this being rebuilt. But please don’t forget the Dirty Dozen. I can see many more months of viewing pleasure coming.
Glad to see ya bringing her back Ken. My favorite rat rod of all ! Inspired me to attempt to build one myself. 36 Ford pu. Thank you! 😊
I watched you build it before, I'll watch you build it again.

I watched you build this rig and I will watch you rebuild it heck yeah I will Have a good day Ken

Like the saga of Odysseus. Only his dog remembered him when he got home. Maybe Josh the cat will hop up on the front seat when Dodgeillac makes it home.
Drop you an sbc with an 871 huffer in the brat . I mean, if you get bored and looking for something to do, lol. Good work, Waylon 👍
Hi Waylon Ray from west virgina. I want to say your an isperation.. not because you. Fell but because you get back up
I can see this being another one of your great adventures. Yeah! it's gonna take a while and I gonna learn plenty.
You arent building the rat rod twice you are building it right for the first time.
Hang in there Ken Ole Waylon loves to cruise❤
Thanks Waylon!🐾
Poor ole Waylon! If it wasn’t for bad luck, he’d have no luck at all! Maybe things are getting better!
Eddy
oh I aint stressin; lol.. just wince a little when I open my wallet!
The rain hitting the tin roof makes me sleepy 😂😂😂
I had the same problem years ago with a 79 honda civic. It had ran hot and I had head serviced couple times and replaced the head gasket each time still getting water in oil. Finally pulled the block and had it planed and that solved the problem. It was an aluminum block, not sure if the subaru block is aluminum or not but if it is your block surface might be warped.
New subscriber, enjoy watching and looking forward to the next show.
Thanks for subbing
Love your videos Waylon wire keep up the good work my friend
Yep, lot's of work ahead. I remember when you did it the first time. Have you tried LMC Truck for front end parts?
I'm sure it was and will be painful doing it again, but I'm just as sure you are going to be grinning and staring at it with the same love all over again! Okay it's not a new build but think of it as 2.0 🤔
Ha Ken . I have a vapor blasting unit . I can get those valve covers looking good again along with the air scoop . I'll do them up for you if you want . Let me know . Just something from me to you for what you do for us ...
wow.. that would be fantastic.. where are you located?
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire miss.

@@MrAmartin8 oh I wouldn't ask you to do that..but its very kind of you
They belong there. stay strong, we can't all be wrong.
what belongs where? lol
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire The lights. Some may not remember the effort that went into gettin those set right. I do.
Thanks for the video. Love that Rat Rod.
God Bless !
One good thing is you only have to rebuild the front end the back still looks solid
Hi Waylon,,how about up dating to tubler control arms, you can get them setup for airbags
Hi Waylon ol buddy from the D Mi hey another fire 😮😂 hey bro I feel for you, lucky you know the Man whom builder is and He can rebuild it 👍💪🤩🌟
Man i hate this for you.
I'll give you a set of car dolleys if you cover the shipping. I have two sets of them I'll probably never use.
I'm here for ya buddy !!
Poor Waylon can’t catch a break
Your tough, you'll get it
to be honest its not as bad as I thought it was!
