Yes, most people probably don’t realize that, he has to be sore after pitching and still hits homers the day after. Incredible!

I know my comment might sound silly, and I don't have anywhere near the level of experience of most people who play the game. I just happen to be a right-handed pitcher who batted lefty in high school. Throwing from one side and and swinging from the other side is actually quite complementary in stretching out the body. I'm not saying this as a formula, but I say this from my own very limited personal experience. Recovery isn't as tough as many would suggest.
Could it be a coincidence that Ichiro was also a righty who bats lefty? He could throw a laser from right field and slash the ball ridiculously consistent.

Best player ever? I don't think so.
I mean.. don't forget about Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb, Roger Clemens, Micky Mantle, Lou Gehrig, just off the top of my head
Sure, this dude pitches ok and hits well, but is it sustainable for his entire career? He's only been in the league for 5-ish years now, say another 10 or so, average MLB career, I just don't think he can sustain. Who knows. I'll come back in 10 years if I'm alive and be like ok you were right.

    • @limitedbom2206

@@DustinPlatt You have to admit if he keeps doing what he has been (obviously age decline will happen eventually), he's going to be in the conversation. Is he by far the best pitcher in the league? No. But he's still very very good. Probably hovering around top 15ish in the league for starting pitchers. And he's definitely one of the best hitters in the league. So you take someone who is one of the best hitters, steals bases, and is one of the better players in the most important position? That's someone who will be in the conversation of the best player ever.
It'd be like a hockey player being one of the better goalies, and being one of the highest scorers in the league. It's something that is unbelievable.

Everyone you mentioned is no doubt a great, with outstanding stats over long careers as SOLO position players.
Shohei doesn't need their length of time to be an all time great, since he's already got amazing stats as a TWO WAY PLAYER that he alone stands on top of and shares with no one else.
So, he may not end his career matching or surpassing those solo position greats, but his stats will be impressive and close enough with other pitching and hitting greats, to be considered a baseball all timer.

I know Ohtani has inspired a lot of people to try and be a two-way player. But I don't think they realize just how much work they will need to do in order to play both at a top level like Ohtani. Shohei is completely obsessed with the game of baseball. That's what allows him to keep pushing himself and keep doing the Monday things that allow him to be so great. That's the reason why I don't see how anyone will be able to do what he does any time soon. Even babe ruth stopped after a year and a half because it was too hard. Many will try and many will ultimately quit.

Why do do many people not appreciate what Ohtani does? 1. He makes it look easy. 2. Only professional ball players know what it takes to be at that level. Normal people haven't a clue.

He's more than an MVP, this dude is incredible. Like Pedro said, the day after pitching feels like you been hit by a train. I used to pitch in High school and threw 90-92mph, and the next day I didn't have enough strength to open a door handle. Adrenaline dump is the most devastating thing to a body. To see this guy strike out 13 big league hitters, and then smash homers of his own the next day is unthinkable to me.

It's great to hear former MLB stars including Pedro Martinez, talking with such awe about Shohei Ohtani. Mark Gubicza, who does the color commentary on Angels broadcasts, has said many times how difficult it is for a pitcher to just recover physically after a start lasting six or seven innings. Just like what Pedro talks about. Ohtani has to be some amazing athlete with incredible conditioning, dedication and physical ability, as well as a workout routine that keeps him in top shape. He pitched well on Sunday, lowering his ERA as he allowed just two hits and one run over six innings, with nine strikeouts against the Twins. He has a BA against him of .142 when he's pitching, and the Angels have won 8 of the 10 games he started this year--a team with a mediocre .500 record this season. Meantime, as a hitter, he leads the Angels currently in HRs, RBIs, stolen bases and extra base hits. A team with Mike Trout on it. And he's not even been consistently at his best pitching or hitting yet.

The way that Ohtani is pushing himself in both hitting and pitching, I dread that anytime in the next 5 years he would just all of a sudden get injured and end his career. Appreciate his greatness now because it could end so suddenly. He's very likely to burn out instead of fade away.

I think Shohei can do all those things without draining all his energy is 1. He has been a 2 way player for a long time so he's used to it. 2. Look at the way he's built. - 6 feet 5 inches 225 ibs with very little bodyfat and very long legs. and 3. His movements as a pitcher and hitter are fluid and effortless. He has one of the most beautiful swings that I have ever seen, and his pitching delivery looks smooth and efficient.

Baseball is everything to Ohtani. That’s why, imagine being depressed because u can’t do what you love. He’s that way, pitching and hitting is what he loves what gives him enjoyment in life. He’s a well conditioned athlete and he dedicates all his time to baseball cuz at the end of the day most people want to drive a limbo and be on a yacht but for Shohei it’s hitting home runs and striking batters out. 6 hrs or batting 6 hrs of pitching, throw on the actual game and conditioning and thats a guy that loves baseball and is baseball.

He could throw a sweeper which breaks left, and cutter which breaks right, a sinker or splitter which break down, or just blow you away with heat. I forgot he also has a curveball and slider too. Fastball, slider, sweeper, sinker, splitter, curve, and cutter. Did I miss anything? 😭
