Shohei Ohtani is the best thing to ever happen to baseball. I remember the clowns doubting him when he 1st came over saying he can’t do both because he got injured in his early career. I bet they are all praising him now. Man, myth & legend.
i admit i was a doubter because it hadnt been done but to call me a "clown" is kind of a goofball move. it's just using basic common sense. it hadn't been done with REAL players, if you catch my drift. he's great and i was wrong about him but i dont think we will start seeing this become the norm for quite a while. what he is doing is harder than what steph curry does with his range of shot.

How is it being a clown for having doubts? This has never been done well in modern day baseball. Injury was part of the problems of focusing on both pitching and batting. I never thought it was impossible but staying healthy doing both pitching and batting is a legit concern.

Mark Derosa makes this stuff so easy to understand. Great teachers always start with a passion for their subject. And Shohei is just a complete win on the mound!

All the accolades from DeRosa are totally deserved. But let's dispense with the "he's got to do it a little bit longer" mindset. He's been at this amazing elite level as both a pitcher and hitter for the last two years, remaining healthy despite the incredible strains mentally and physically for what he's doing. If he flamed out tomorrow, I'd feel grateful for two years of such phenomenal performance unlike anyone before him, and he already deserves to have his own room in the Hall of Fame. Of course, I hope he remains healthy and can possibly exceed what he's already done.

Are they comparing him with hitters who hits or pitchers who pitch, that is no comparison as he can only be compared to other full-time two way players…which there are none..
Why people are afraid to give him that recognition. The numbers are already there including the time length in which it has been done!

Yep, he's already a legend that I'll tell my grandkids about. But imagine if he can do it for 10 years. That would be pure, virtuosic art.
I think he's implying that he has to do it for a little bit longer to be talked about (historically and as a baseball figure) in the same way that we talk about Ruth, which seems fair to me. I do think that he's already cemented his legacy in one way-if you had a league reset with a draft where you could take any player in history in their prime, I think you take Shohei over the last year round one pick one.
Ohtani is a unicorn that has brought in so many fans to MLB from all over the world including fans from competing teams. He is highly marketable. MLB needs to market this man much more and watch the fanbase roll in.
Unfortunately, leopards cannot change their spots. Some racists will never even acknowledge the talent of Shohei Ohtani and even his 2021 MVP, because he is Japanese and he is Asian! Shohei should have won the 2022 MVP as well. There are so many anti-asian racists out there.

Love Shohei Ohtani!!!!!! I flew from New Jersey to Seattle to see him hit his 46th Home Run of his MVP season.
That's great praise mixed with solid stats to prove the case. And I keep thinking, as an Ohtani fan who has seen him pitch almost every time in the previous two years, that he's still not at his own peak. He's been struggling a bit at times, trying to get command, especially in the first inning or two. He feels his way into the game to figure out what in his arsenal is working best that day. With guys on base, he bears down even more. I don't think they included that among the stats. But he's one of the very best at shutting down an offense with runners on. Sure, he makes mistakes occasionally; he's not perfect. But even when he's off a bit, he manages the game to minimize damage. And this season, he's been calling his own pitches using the comm device attached near his left armpit. And he's hitting in the lineup every day, on days he's pitching and days after he's pitched or anytime.
The network that features Angels games has former MLB pitcher Mark Gubicza as the color commentator/analyst, and he's constantly amazed at what Ohtani is doing. He says, as a pitcher, you're spending the next day or two recovering after a start--you're sore everywhere, tired, and can only do light stuff while recovering. Not Ohtani. For the last two years, he's been a starting pitcher and a full-time DH, who also runs with elite speed on the bases and I think is fastest in time from home plate to first base.

A few guys won the Cy and MVP already, but he'll definitely be the first to actually win both for two separate reasons, if that makes sense.

Ohtani is a different beast. Dude can hit bombs, run fast, have a crazy velocity and also crazy breaking pitches. Of course there may be simple examples on some people who do some certain things better than ohtani, but to have that much skill in all of them and not only being average but close to the top in every category is crazy
Ohtani is a baseball psycho, dude spends every waking hour training,thinking, and planning how to be better. Throw his insane natural talent on that work ethic and you get a unicorn.
He's even better than that, cus he calculates every move and every game. What the next pitchers, hitters gonna bring, how much does his team need to win the game and then the series, etc. He said before that he didn't do this in Japan, the research and all. He just let the ball come and he played and he was just this good. But ever since coming to the mlb, he would calculate, he would research on all players.
Yup he seems to have the same focus on his craft that someone like Tom Brady has. Dude just lives for ball.

I do agree though that the Japanese have a lot of inspiring ideas. And I wish everyone around me adopts their value for technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Othani has evolved with the game of baseball. He plays each individual position focused. He understands the importance of the individual positions. He has the baseball IQ required for each position. He is a "unique" 5 tool player. Especially with his pitching abilities. He showed it by striking out Mike Trout. As a hitter we recognized our weakest pitch to hit. With Trout, I think Othani got in the head of Trout and threw him the unthinkable pitches...down the middle.

Having lived in Iwate, it was awesome to see how much support this guy had. From farmers manipulating their stock to look like images of him, or his number. Going to the dentist office.
Regardless of which city I’d be visiting in Iwate, you’d find tributes to him everywhere.
He’s amazing. Made me a fan of baseball.

That AB with J Rod was kind of unfair. His pitches was outside /inside / outside / Nothing was middle middle for JRod to hit. JRod never even touch the ball in that at bat.

Ohtani just pitched the last inning. Team Japan was just great, Ohtani didn’t carry the team, but he def was a big part of the star squad.

The best praise for him would be he’s improving while playing under the notorious Angels coaching staff which turned great players into average players. Multiple great players had come back year after leaving the Angels. Maybe he wouldn’t have took 4-5 years to break out had he gone to a decently coached team.

His skill set seems to be evolving which is a scary thing to contemplate. As a Yankees fan I'm appreciative of the fact that in their recent encounters with him they were largely successful. The ironic thing is that his stats (mainly win/loss) would be better most likely if he were on a different team. The other thing that occurs to me is the unwise nature it would seem, in him playing an outfield position on the days he doesn't pitch if there's any concerns about keeping his arm healthy. There's a different type of torque and stresses involved when trying to throw from the outfield to home plate for instance compared to throwing from the mound.

Ohtani is amazing. The reason we don't see this more is the US system doesn't really allow for 2 way players. Maybe we see this change in the future. Players like Tim Hudson, Todd Helton, Jon Olerud, Mike Hampton, Dave Windfield and even Zack Greinke to name a few given a chance in that type of system may have been very successful playing 2 ways. Rick Ankiel is a great example of someone who at least showed great talent at the MLB level as a pitcher and hitter. Imagine if he had hit his whole career, it may have put him in a mental state that allowed him to keep pitching. It looks like the 2 way model may get more attention in the future and will be fun to watch. I am pretty sure Glavin and Maddux focused on hitting for a season and starting hitting bombs, memory might be a little fuzzy on that though.
