6:41 Worst part is Strikers showed that these spin-offs CAN do more and CAN develop the Phantom Thieves in interesting ways. But here? Atlus settles for simplicity. The Phantom Thieves honestly aren’t even important in this story. They exist solely to serve the development of the new characters. I also honestly think, especially taking into account late game reveals, if you replace them with the Investigation Team, literally nothing would change.

Most people don't really mind if the story is cliched or poorly handled as long as the gameplay is engaging (see: the latest Fire Emblem game) on the contrary, the people who play for the story and don't care if the gameplay is bad are a small and... somewhat quiet minority.

I think atlus planned to genuinely cook really fkn hard for the persona anniversary because of how insanely successful persona has been recently but plans changing + covid made things move around. The ports to all platforms shouldn't have been a big deal, p5t should've been out late last year, p3r we should've got early/mid this year and then then we get the party game and p6 late next year. Metaphor was supposed to be out like last year max but they obviously had some issues too which might've shifted around the internal launches for other stuff too. Now I see p6 getting revealed next year but being 2025.
I also think the people complaining about not getting p6 yet aren't completely in the wrong, while i did look at the credits and find a loot of outsourcing, some of the p studio staff are there and were probably splitting their time between 5t, p3r and p6 so in a way they were probably some allocating resources. We will only know for sure when every game's credits are out though but it seems likely that a studio working on multiple projects would be, you know working on multiple projects lol...
You say "neither side knows how game development works" then mention how atlus can work on multiple projects but still reject the notion that they might be splitting resources for some reason?

    • @siuchaos2606
      @siuchaos2606 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I think so too, there may have been a wrench that was thrown into the production because it doesn't make sense that we got what we got in the anniversary. I definitely believe they were gonna go down that path, cause it started off relatively strong with P4AU, and then the next one it was just an announcement for a concert, and it got to the point where they even removed the question marks for the reveals, as well as the final one which many people suspected would've been P6.
I think the plan was p4au - concert announcement - p3-p5 modern ports - p5t - boring jp only announcement - p3r announcement - p6 teaser, also I just think Atlus is really small and they took on more than they could handle. I mean people forget that Atlus only has like 300 employees, and while Persona can be considered a AAA IP at this point, they don't have as much resources as other AAA studios do. While sure, they have sega's backing that's only for production the development and everything comes down to the 300-400 employees they have.

6 mins into this review, and it really seems like either you've played this game on a bad day (or days), or you simply don't want any more persona 5 spinoffs, so that's making you go into the game with an already negative preconception or bias. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Sorry I had to re-edit the comment as I saw the whole review and the gameplay analysis was fine.
However, in general BubbleTea has highlighted in the past he really doesn’t care about the spin-offs. So I’m unsurprised by his reaction against the story. The spin-offs are almost always an in-depth exploration of a single character rather than that of society itself often keeping the core themes and elements from the main series. Personally I think that makes for a well focused story that doesn’t need to intrude upon the mainline continuity while being true to what their respective games P3, P4 and P5 are about but compared to the mainline entries the stakes are substantially smaller.
However I do think he is absolutely spot on about Persona 6. Tactica has no bearing on it and trying to outlay the blame for not being revealed yet is pretty petty.

The interesting parts of the story don't really come until after Kingdom 1 (which is about 40% of the game for some reason) and most of the parts I liked didn't even involve the PTs. I actually liked the story more than I was expecting going in, but I can definitely see a lot of people losing interest pretty quickly. I know the maps aren’t visually striking per-say, however, the combat engagements themselves are really good at making you consider all of your options and how you can best tackle each enemy layout. I’m also glad it’s different from Devil Survivor too because it would have been a bummer if it was just stealing the thunder from Devil Survivor

That's like being mad at Nintendo for announcing a new Fire Emblem game when you want a Mario game. They're still working on Persona 6. This is a different game worked on by a different team than p6, and if you don't like it, that's okay, mainline Persona games are still being worked on.
As for p5t, I agree that the story is very predictable. But I do enjoy the gameplay and it's fun seeing the thieves again, so I've been enjoying my time with it so far ^^

Yeah I was pretty excited up to the very start of the second world, and I kind of rolled my eyes and realized it would probably be a rinse and repeat for the next however many worlds. I guess I hoped for more of a proper sequel than just a non-canon slice of life side story. (That's even what Strikers felt like for me, though.) Tactica feels like one of those One Piece movies that has nothing to do with the main plot and it's just an excuse for wacky hijinks and fun animation, which is great if you're more there for that than for the ongoing character development or whatever. If all you want P5T for is fun tactical combat and a great soundtrack, then it's pretty fantastic. Far less questionable than the repetitious grind of Q.

What I like about Atlus is that they take time to do their mainline games, especially persona, since that's what I follow, the reason why persona 5 has such a strong identity is because they took their time making it and it's been 7 years since persona 5 came out in the west, 8 years since it came out on japan, so if persona 6 is announced like this year or in 2025 with the release window being 1 year apart from when the trailer comes out, then I'll be happy, since I know that they worked that title until it was as polished as it could, after all that's what is special about the persona games, their strong identity and style.
I don't think these spin offs are something they do solely for money or that they will delay the release of the next persona game, I think they are a means for atlus to toy with other genres while keeping us satisfied until persona 6 is ready to come out of the oven
Plus I would rather wait for persona 6 to be revealed a year apart from when it can be released to what the persona fandom had to suffer with persona 5's release, from what I remember the game was announced in 2013 to be released in 2014, it was then delayed to 2015 and one more time to 2016 where it released only in japan, after that it was one more year of waiting for people outside of japan. Think what you will about kh3, but the game was announced and only received a release date around 2018 from what I remember, if the game was ever delayed it was a few months until it's release semi-globally in january 2019

By the start of the game, they introduce you to the 3 main kinds of enemies and then... it's mostly just that for the rest of the game.
They eventually add more as you go, but if I recall correctly, the game has a total of 7 different enemies (one of which only appears on 1 stage) and half of them are not present in most of the levels.
Besides that, I really enjoyed the game, it felt like a huge puzzle game with the way that effects (most of the time) are guaranteed and enemies have pattern behaviors that can be recognized and used to your advantage

I'm guessing this review is a clash of expectations. Not all spin-offs can be of Strikers caliber. But when I went it as a novice of tactical games and a simple desire to see more Phantom Thieves interactions, I was quite satisfied with my experience. The first two Kingdoms delivered what I expected, in both gameplay and story.
However, judging on your gameplay footage and how close your characters were to dying, I'm guessing you had a hard time passing the stages. Which would certainly be a hard, frustrating time... if you never use leverage. The Persona series was always a game that punished brute force playing and in-the-box-thinking. If you never utilized every trick in the book or exploited weaknesses mercilessly, the game will chew you up. I'm guessing that's why you view the gameplay unfavorably. I always had a blast making openings, picking the perfect position and causing enemies to fall like dominoes. The first two Kingdoms were full of those moments.
And then we came to the Third Kingdom. That's when things got interesting. Here's a truth: P5 Tactica is not Joker's story; it's Toshiro's. His past gets revealed here and as a plot, it's pretty good. It was gratifying to see Toshiro grow from a knee-shaking coward to a man who has found his inner strength to face his inner demons, and he has plenty of them. Tactica's story renewed my appreciation of the Persona concept and using them to brave the trials and tribulations of the world. The fourth and final Kingdom while may be a little stale, was an opportunity to showcase Toshiro's growth. I loved the almost-poetic moments that arose from Toshiro joining the fray.
The voicework and music was top-notch as always. The voice actors have not lost their touch and brought back our familiar Phantom Thieves we love so much (especially Akechi and Kasumi in the DLC), it's like they never left. The Lyn songs that played during ass-kicking missions and boss fights were amazing as usual.
While Persona 5 Tactica would not be a game I replay over and over, it did give me what I want: more Phantom Thieves. As a spin-off, it delivered satisfactorily in that regard.

    Spoiler alert:
All of the foreshadowing in this game is for nothing, Toshiro just remembers a bunch of traumatic events and then right at the pivotal moment he remembers that they actually had less bad outcomes then he thought. Him remembering things that already happened in the past are both the problems and solutions to the central conflict of the game.
The game also teases that the revolutionaries might be bad guys in the 3rd kingdom and for a brief moment I had hope that there might be a chaos aligned final boss who was manipulating you towards revolution...
But no, Yaldabouth 3 shows up to deliver a barely coherent straw man argument about why you must give up your free will, just in time to reaffirm the Phantom Thieves as of yet still unchallenged belief that that law and order is cringe, and violence and chaos are based 100% of the time.

I find P5T very fun, as a complete tactics game noob, who is now interested in seeing more of what they could offer. I also quite enjoy just seeing the PT be the PT in the dialogue scenes, so I have enjoyed that aspect quite a bit as well.
That being said, the story is very much... expected... of a P5 spinoff at this point (at least as far as I have gotten thus far; I just beat Marie) and I do recall wishing that the revel of Marie's connection to Toshiro was a little more sprinkled out, or at least done more creatively, like how some of the better Palaces cleverly dolled out their ruler's cognition over the course of the dungeon.
I don't dislike the story, it just doesn't feel like it expands the Phantom Thieves' story in a way that hasn't been explored before. Like, how Strikers' Jails and Monarchs showed the PT that some corrupt people are not too far gone yet, and introduced the idea of real redemption (as opposed to a forced change of heart) to the theming of P5. So far, it doesn't feel like anything new like that has been introduced in Tactica.
Again, I have only just beaten Marie, so I may end up being wrong after seeing more of the story, but if I'm right, the game feels more like a fun time-killer to me that entices me to what stories could be told through a tactics game, rather than a huge storytelling achievement in and of itself.
Either way though, I am still a fan of the game, as it is really fun, and I won't complain at another opportunity to see the Phantom Thieves. Overall, I see some of the disappointment, but for me it is a good and worthwhile game that should be given a chance.

Personally, I really enjoy the q series. It's been years since I played the person at 3 and personal 4 to the point that I Bailey remembered them because I was a small child when persona Q came out. That was the first time I really absorbed the game.
Knowing how much people don't like those games. Kind of makes me sad because they're not bad. The music isn't bad. The story is you know. CC plus and this is coming from a fan. But doesn't mean anything. I understand people want focus and their stories and certain spin-off games. Kind of don't always hit the mark. But I might even lie to you after playing Royal. For a second time on the switch. I sometimes Miss just playing with these characters. I played soul hackers 2 and I got bored. It wasn't good. I played magami 5 and although I felt like a godd. The story just wasn't good enough. The characters wasn't good enough and a simple fact. I can sit down and play strikers. Q2 and this means that even though some games, main line or spin-off. Come out somewhere really enjoyable and some aren't.
That shouldn't take away from the mainline or shouldn't take away from the spin-offs.

I think the sheer fact you mention you didn’t absorb P3-4 is why your opinion is so different.
People didn’t like Q cuz of its writing. While there were some cool moments, the character writing wasn’t very strong. Which is something you seem to champion. Q is less about plot and more about the cast, so if the game fails in its character writing, ppl will dislike it. Since Q was your first time really absorbing the character writing, you found it better than ppl with the expectations of the quality of the previous games.

it's 100 Australian dollars, so I wasn't going to buy it anyway, but I know that persona 6 is coming eventually, and any spinoff won't change that, so i honestly don't care if atlus wants to make more spinoffs, it makes them money, which makes them games. just imagine the budget increase for p6 when you think about how they're profiting from Royal, Strikers, this, and P3R. I don't really pay close attention to the spinoffs anyway, I only just bought strikers today because of the autumn steam sale it was 30 bucks. I want to support Atlus but the biggest problem I have with them isn't what games they make, it's how much they cost. I feel they'd get more people on board if their spinoff games were cheaper. I mean P4G cheap AF back when they dropped it on steam and it sold like hotcakes. I know releasing games onto consoles is expensive but surely they'd profit more if the games were cheap, they'd get more people on board with it.

As a big fan of both the Disgaea and Persona series, I was actually really looking forward to playing this game when it was announced. Wasn't super hyped, but it was on my list. After playing through it, it's a nice game. Not too serious, but also not braindead. The gameplay was fun and rewarding whenever I got 3 stars on a level. Made me think a lot towards the latter half of the game on how I wanna position everyone to take out the enemies in as few turns as possible. The side quests were also fun puzzles that I actually felt accomplished after completing. The story isn't too deep or groundbreaking, but it was nice and a good break from the other deeply invested stories I've been playing through. My only real complaint was that the personas felt as if they had no real impact and it didn't matter which ones you equipped on anyone since I was mainly using everyone's core moveset anyway. I had no real incentive to fuse and unlock as many personas as I could because they were all so bland and not impactful. Overall, it's a fun little game that can be completed in a few days and will have you appreciate it more if you've already completed the original P5. A good buy imo. Been wanting to play through it again sometime once I buy the DLC. Recommend if you want something short and sweet that can easily be replayed every now and then without having to invest too much time into it.

I feel like one of the major problems with the game is that you are stuck in the first kingdom for what feels like half the game. The reason this is a problem is that the story picks up later in the game and becomes good and to peoples points in the comments, people won’t stick around that long if the story doesn’t pick up usually. It’s not a bad thing, but it feels like watching a show/series and everyone says it will become good on episode 20 or the movie gets good in the last 30 minutes. I’m not here to watch the end of the movie or series, equivalent to eating the last piece of cake I’m here to enjoy the entire cake or movie for what it is. This is just my opinion here though, I’m open to hear others and thank you for listening to my Ted talk 🤣

Maybe I’m out of place, but I think both Atlus and Persona fans have a lot to gain by just releasing a P5R sequel as opposed to… what? The 5th spinoff?? I mean, I understand that devs want linear stories without putting too much emphasis on any one game, but at this point, it’s obvious that Atlus is trying to bankroll off the success and popularity of P5 without actually producing anything of value. Would it really be taboo to have a full blown sequel and push Persona 6 out maybe 4 or 5 more years? I think everyone has a lot to benefit. Persona fans can get more content, and Atlus can easily sit back knowing that any P5R sequel would pull in both numbers and a ton of new fans. Then you release P6.
Not only (in my opinion) is Persona 5 Royal an amazing game with great characters and a good story, but you can easily justify a sequel with how both vanilla and royal ended, plus with how astonishingly popular Joker and the Phantom Thieves are (Joker is in Smash… he’ll have longevity regardless of if Atlus continues his story or not!) Plus, it would be nice to see Sumire come back as a character since I felt her story arc was rushed and cluttered into the end of Royal. I don’t believe she’s been in any spinoffs either. Perfect opportunity. Rest assured, we’ll be seeing more Joker for sure, either in an actual sequel or a Persona 5 themed board game at some point…

im a fan of P5T, mainly for the story and how it utilizes existing stories to boost this one's. sure, its predictable (i would say extremely so by the late game? since i honestly managed to predict most of the ending while i was playing lmao) especially with its main story beats, but i appreciate the fact that the game does take the chance to do some things better than say, P5S
some spoilers for P5T and P5S below
im not sure of Q's story, since i havent played it, but in regards to P5S; i like the fact that P5T utilizes Yusuke's and Futaba's characteristics to help Toshiro's character reach some realizations, unlike in P5S where Makoto is the one talking to Akane about her mother/Aoi's death when Yusuke or Futaba makes more sense. then there's also the way P5T handles Toshiro's Awakening. it feels to me like a mix of P4's general awakenings and P5S' Zenkichi's Awakening; Toshiro is confronting his Shadow, and his Persona actively and directly talks to him (for Zenkichi, this is his "Shadow")
overall, i like the video! i may not agree with it fully, but i love hearing about others' commentary about P5T, neat work!

if im being honest, tactica was better than strikers and highly underrated. i was one of the very few people who was hyped by this game, mainly cuz of the gameplay looking like a lot of fun, but the story was actually way better than what i was expecting. toshiro became a fav cuz of the story, but also the comedy he gave, and erina i knew i was going to love from the start and that hasnt changed. there r some flaws with the game, i wasnt much of a fan for the second boss fight in particular, and while i also enjoyed the dlc, i do agree it shouldve just been part of the base game as something extra to play after the main story (thankfully, i did get it off of gamepass so i only had to pay for the dlc anyway). i will agree that its not much in character defining for the phantom thieves, but i would say its kinda the point as we already know the phantom thieves. it was erina's and toshiro's game and they were great additions to the series.

I agree with you in the sense that the writing is boring and predictable. However, you are wrong when you hypothesize that a spinoff such as Tactica is not diverting from Persona 6. P3R and P5T are precisely diverting time, resources and capital from the development of new IPs. Perhaps there is a sub-division of P-Studio that is diligently working on P6, but we know that the big 3 (Soejima, Meguro and Hashino) have been making an entirely new IP in the interim, so P-Studio has no excuses. Atlus is not necessarily as bad as Rockstar games milking Gta 5 for 10 straight years, but if this trend continues, they will be guilty of the same greed and incompetence.

    • @bubbletea_

persona 6 is likely being developed by p-studio and metaphor is being developed by studio zero. there is no way metaphor or the absence of katsura hashino and co (who have passed on the torch and aren't even leading any persona projects anymore) are getting in the way of p6's development.

    • @FirstPlace97
      @FirstPlace97 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'm not saying that Metaphor is getting in the way of what P Studio does or doesn't do, although the split of talent is itself a bit concerning for the quality of future Persona games. All I'm saying is that the current industry trend is to divide and conquer. Well, that is not an effective strategy.
It's kind of like how most people would express dissatisfaction with RE3R being short, which is directly correlated to a smaller dev cycle. It's noted that it was only after the conclusion of RE3R that those devs then joined in on completing and polishing RE4R, which provided much needed support in achieving higher quality that the project demanded.
It's just not possible for all these games to being in production simultaneously and expect them to be finished on time and on budget. It's especially silly for this to be the strat when they continue to put out games no one asked for. P3R is unnecessary, but if it serves as a tech demo for the eventual P6, maybe it can be justified. Stuff like Tactica would have been served better if they didn't bother.@@bubbletea_

It's coherent. characters are distinct and the models are well constructed and animated. Colors pop and the simpler artstyle makes the gameplay simpler to parse, especially with how Tactica focuses on positioning as the central mechanic. It's funny that they dunk on p5 tactica when p5's animation is wonky as hell and the character models are atrocious (Ryuji's face with the fish face proportions still crack me up. When folks like me point out that we prefer the game to be focusing on the original Persona 3 narrative and not including all this weird baggage like Answer and FeMC (with her borderline pedophilic social link with Ken everyone seems to neglect to mention when they bring her up), everyone reverts to simple brain "MORE EQUALS BETTER"

It’s cuz P3 could have more than what they originally had. So much content has been released after the original that would be cool to include so long as it doesn’t contradict what’s going on. Heck, I’d be into them delaying a certain reveal so that we could get more of a Ken and Shinji dynamic going like how the movies did it (and maybe trying to add more of that movie content into the game to flesh it out more so we get a good mix). And the Answer is good as an epilogue but could be even better, and would benefit from the reimagining/remake. Also, these games have always had grooming & pdf files. Getting to be one isn’t as surprising but I also think they’d rewrite it just like they’re rewriting the girl SLs for no forced romance.
Ppl see this game as a chance to fix a lot of issues plaguing the series, like combining the better/missing portable writing and what not.
Regardless, ppl will dog on the new content when it comes out. They did for The Answer too. A lot of ppl still hate it and are saying they’re happy it’s excluded (despite it also definitively confirming the ending of P3 will never be reversed). So the ppl you’re talking about aren’t always the same ppl too.

@@ma.2089 but we know from experience, even with Persona 3 specifically, that the added extra content is basically always a miss. P5R is the exception not the rule. Yall try to simultaneously act like you truly love P3 but also that P3 isn't enough for yall. More isn't always better. I replayed P3F after the announcement and I hated the Answer more than ever.
You don't keep piling on extra shit to a masterful piece of art just for the sake of it. Nothing is perfect, therefore your argument of "it could theoretically be better than the original" applies to literally anything. You neglect to account for the likelihood of these wanton additions actually improving the art (not likely) versus the potential of ruining it (a hell of a lot more likely)

They never played Persona 3, that's the thing. That's why they can say shit like "NEED FEMC" despite her basically being P3's Marie lmao.

Because 1: a lot of the “P3 fans”are purely fans from when they’re kids. They haven’t touched P3 in a long ass time so their views are skewed to remember it way more fondly. Actually ye that is the main reason. The answer ruins the story but because a lot of the loud P3 enjoyers played it they don’t want to admit it’s bad, same with femc.
As for the others a lot of them never actually touched P3 so they’re just yelling out of their ass

I got effectively softlocked on one of the first missions because I chose the wrong skills. I gave up there and uninstalled. Glad it was on gamepass and I didn't have to worry about losing my money's worth.

The thing that killed my interest in the game was that it is basically non-canon and completely irrelevant to the overall story and characters no matter how you look at it.
Should have set it after P5. Even better if they allowed for some mild Bioware-esque save reading and carrying over choices. But that'd be asking a bit much for a spin off I know.
It is "non-sequitur the game" unfortunately.

why does every persona spinoff include a character that doesnt know who they are or has dementia

    • @eros439
      @eros439 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Probably because it is much easier writing wise and so the new character doesn’t use that experience to tell everyone else about how things work making things much easier and a much shorter journey.
      Quick answer: Easier for writers

Tbf except for a fighting game I’ve never heard anyone say they wanted persona spin offs in the first place. This is extra bad though cuz it was announced along with the 20th anniversary stuff and instead of us giving us things that celebrate the entire series we get like 2-3 persona 5 only things then p3. That’s my main gripe with this game is that it’s supposed to celebrate the series yet doesn’t. It’s gameplay is also dirt easy for an SMT game and it’s story is nothing really special. If I was atlus I would’ve scrapped this and just made PQ3 where all 5 games groups join In for a massive reference heavy adventure to actually celebrate the SERIES and not just P5

I was kinda interested on the game but they decided to release it as a full AAA game price on my third world country and there's no way I can pay for that AND Persona 3 Remake so I guess I will have to wait for a big discount on it.

I think this kinda filler is probably good. It raises stable funding for more interesting, experimental games as well as other parts of operations such as staff pay. As long as those working on the game are treated well, I have no qualms with “filler” if the meat is also released (P3R seems like a good counterpart, like BDSP and PLA)
