    As someone who grew up with formats like Video8, VHS-C and MiniDV i'm really happy that the younger generation of today loves and appreciates the look of these late 90s and early 2000s camcorders so much. And i can see why. Sure, technology moved on but the problem is.... certain Image Sensors have their own charme and unique look. It's like the electronic version of different film-emulsion looks that you have in the motion picture world. No matter how many features and how much more resolution and better dynamic range modern Camera sensors have... there's something really simple and to its own rights very beautiful about the picture coming from these old lowres videocamera sensors. Especially combined with the interlaced picture look. I remember back in the days when you saw DV footage in a CRT TV it really looked almost like HD compared to what you'd see with other consumer videoformats. And personally i always preferred the look of a CCD sensor rather than CMOS. Even till this day. Especially in the early days of HD camcorders their CMOS sensors were terrible because unlike CCD Image sensors, which captured the ENTIRE picture at the same time, a CMOS sensor is being read out line-wise from top to bottom (sometimes bottom to top). And the early ones were pretty slow which is also why caused this Jello / Rolling Shutter effect because the image would be slowly read out from the sensor at a rate where lower parts of the sensor would simply lag a little bit. Ever tried to capture a flashing light with a CMOS sensor? You'd always have half the picture bright while the other half is not bright. The readout speed of CMOS sensors got faster over the years but you STILL get this sort of artifacts every now and then. And for many years this really made HD cameras with CMOS sensor very very useless for certain things. ESPECIALLY for situations with fast motion like with Skater Videos. And CCD chip based camcorders became rarer and rarer. Another reason why CMOS took over was these sensors consumed a lot less energy compared to CCDs which were more power hungry. Using a MiniDV camera like the VX1000 /2000 these days still makes sense because the DV material shot with it uses a pretty low compression and DV even uses an intraframe codec. WHich means EVERY single frame of your DV footage is an actual single-frame and is not just saving the differences between several keyframes, like H264 does in most cases. DV footage is also very resourcefriendly to edit. An hour of DV footage is ca 13 GB in filestorage consumption. So it fits easily most USB drives and single-layer BD-Rs if you backup it from tape or recorded it to flash memory via Firewire-out.

    Nothing has ever beaten the VX1000 sound

    • @MichaelSvenson
      @MichaelSvenson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Internal mics were never intended to be the end game for professional videography. It just so happens the vx1000 mic sounds great compared to the other internal mics of cameras at the time. They must have figured most users weren't going to be at a level of audio expertise to really ever consider using a dedicated mic. It seems as time went by companies dropped the idea of putting energy into the internal mic, as most professionals would get a real mic and only use the internal mic for reference. With a little knowledge of compression and eq the sound of the vx mic can easily be replicated on any compressor mic $100 and up. Although it sure is convenient to not need an external mic to sound good enough for skateboarding, that is unless you plan to do anything else that requires more attention to sound.

    • @MichaelSvenson
      @MichaelSvenson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Color grading is its own discipline, the best results one can get actually don't start with manipulating the colors in the camera, but rather starting from the flattest image possible and working on the colors in post. Its like how the old cameras used to come with built in fade to black transitions and such. Totally worthless unless you plan to do real editing. Same goes with color but on a whole different level and a lot more complicated.

    I grew up with these vx camcorders but could never afford them. So I recorded with Hi8 then eventually a D8. It's nostalgia for me and now I can get one semi-affordable. It isn't cause I don't like HD. I have an HD tv in my living room. But if I bust out the NES I have a standard def tv for that. Why would someone in 2022 want to play the atari, nes, etc? Why not, play it all if you want. I have a vx2000, vx2100 but I also have the ax2000 that's HD. They are all dope.

    4:3 is the reason why skaters want VX. Even tho its possible to film HD in 4:3 , almost no one does it.
    I’d prefer VX HD 4:3 with mk1

  • @full6330name
    @full6330name ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well,the bottom line is that you can make the vx camera or hd camera look both amazing and horrible. One is not necceserly superior to the other. What matters is how you film,edit,export the video,who are the skaters,what are the spots and what's the general vibe off the edit. On a techincal level it needs to look good but it also needs to have a good feeling. And you can perfect or mess up these things on both cameras. In both scenarios is just about how much you care,passion and work are you willing to put into it.

    Maybe if they stop trying to rip people off by overcharging the extreme fisheye, perhaps HD would get liked more often? I mean who did y'all film with that fisheye? Nyjah Huston?! Hell, I don't know if that fisheye was hit in the past. I don't know why y'all be charging 13 grand for it on ebay.
