I'm glad you mentioned "blown firewire" ports. I've used firewire for 20 years and never experienced a "blown port" even though I've heard of this many many times. ive seen the thunderbolt to firewire adapter for macbooks..would that work?
@@filmpicturesandfilms i think i saw a thunderbolt to firewire video on youtube once and it looked legit. but if you wanted to go this route its would cost about 650 cad for everything. although you could go cheap on youre monitor or desktop.
where do you get the capture cameras from
ebay is a good place to look. some vx markets on Instagram also sell them but usually for higher prices i would recommend sticking with sony mini dv cameras because they usually will have used sony tapes in them. i wouldt pay more than 100 cad for one tho.
what windows were you running while capturing mini dv tapes
windows 10
Broooo thank you so much
Great tutorial man! Only problem i'm having is when i playback my tapes from my VX on my capture camera it's super pixelated and the audio is messed up. I can capture from my VX fine but like you said I don't want to mess up the heads. Do i have to buy a different capture camera or is there a setting that I should change or something? Any help would be appreciated!
what kind of capture camera do you have? there is a chance it may just be a something wrong with the camcorder itself and you may need a new one.
only other thing i can think of is to make sure you have an NTSC capture camera. if you have a PAL one that may be the problem
@@finn3588 I have the canon ZR45MC! It says it’s NTSC though :/
It’s a shame because I’ve been having to use my VX to capture but I don’t wanna ruin it. Maybe I should just go ahead and buy another capture camera.
@@MatthewAu00 always stick with sony camcorders! personally i would go with one of the trv series since they are the most well built but affordable. trv17, trv 27, trv 20 ect ect
@@finn3588 gotcha I’ll look into it thanks bro appreciate it!
does this work better than a vhs to digital converter. I've been having issues with the audio being fuzzy through the converter
if you're having problems that way then this will definitely be better. this is how 99% of people capture mini dv footage now
@@finn3588 thanks, is it difficult to install on a pc?
@@leo-wm6do nope it just pops right in
hi
have you got solution for a laptop ?
thanks
you would need to buy a real adapter. not a usb to firewire adapter because those can damage your computer. it would probably be in the range of 100-200 for one that would actually work
Finn ok tanks
so i will continue to use Mac’s friends
This guy looks like he films
i have a canon gl2 would this tutorial work for it as well?
yes since it uses mini dv tapes
@@finn3588 do u recommend any good and free/low price editing apps for windows 10 pc?
@@gullible565 honestly not too sure. ive heard of a few things but nothing i can remember
@@finn3588 so do you think uploading to a mac and using premier pro or imovie would be the best option?
@@gullible565 Pinnacle Studio 14 editor/importer, with its oval Pinnacle 510 USB capture card, does work on Win10 laptop! It captures either DV or HDV (1440x1080) footage.
Is this possible without having a FireWire port/cable?
there are other options out there for converts like that. I dont know of any of the top of my head but i know ive come across them. although i have no idea how reliable they actually are or if they even work on a newer version of windows
how do i get the clips into the software like after you press f5 idk what to do
if youre camcorder is properly connected you will be able to scrub through the video using the capture program exactly as I did.
@@finn3588 yeah i think its something wrong with that it says capture device offline
If you kids can’t get the mk1 just go Hd and don’t even waste your time with the vx. Save your time and money
do you know any common problems with it saying capture device offline?
your firewire port on your cam is fried 🤷♂️😂. Did you check device manager to make sure the firewire port on the PC is connected properly? if so then its definitely your camera
Since DV is only 25mbps there is no need to go above 30!
good to know. thats just what ive been told 😅
Can you re use mini DV tapes?
you can always tape over them a 2nd time. but it lowers the quality of the video, plus it puts more wear and tear on the camcorder
@@finn3588 is it worth doing at all if I have a head cleaner
@@R41NKN15H7 i would not reccomend. i have a head cleaner as well and its only good for so many uses. id just buy more tapes or convert to the digital tape reader options
cant you just use a firewire to usb?
firewire to usb is kind of a gimmick. havent heard on any of them actually working and ive also heard of them damaging the vx firewire port
@@finn3588 isn't there an a/v out port on a mini dv camera? if so can you use that?
@@antonharboe_5668 did you figure out a way?
@@2KopeFilms if the camera has a composite output just use that ig
hey Finn, this video was great. My friends and I are huge advocates for the VX1000 & VX2000. I was wondering how efficient is Premiere Pro at capturing? I've used it before using HD footage but I've never used mini dv footage on this program. (yet) Looking forward to talking with you!!
Cheers,
Alex
super simple. just as long as your camcorder settings match the capture settings youre good
Does it always log at 29.97 fps? Are you able to log at 23.976?
i usually just change my timeline settings to 60 fps. the footage will capture at whatever fps you filmed it at.
what fisheye is that?
opteka fisheye 52mm thread. its basically a mk1 replica
@@finn3588 yoo thank you so much for the fast reply, P.D ive watched this video over 10 times
@@benicioriva8168 thanks man 😃 ill be doing a separate video on the trv900 soon. not sure if youve heard of it but its basically a vx1000 but in a smaller body. im super excited so stay tuned for the review ✌
@@finn3588 ohh yea I know its a really nice cam, you got it before de vx right?
Does this work with windows 10?
yes thats what I use personally
damn I don't have those extra ports
you can buy an extension
any way for laptops ?
there are probably old converters out there. but at that point may aswell just buy a cheap desktop 🤷♂️
thanks so much

this almost helped lil brother, the issue im having if anyone can help, is I have a HDR FX7 and I just got a vx1000 im trying to capture using premier and it won't let me switch from HDV TO DV help please ;C
what if i have a laptop
unless its an old one where you can install extra ports then nothing you can do. I had to buy a pc just for my vx
@@finn3588 thx man I found out that since I had a Mac I could buy FireWire adapter cable thanks !
