  • Fan editor Billy Batson's feature length cut of ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL (1941), with Tom Tyler and Frank Coghlan Jr.
Note: The serial that this film is taken from is reported by Internet sources to be in the public domain. For a copy of the full serial, with informative commentary, I'd recommend the recent Kino Lorber blu-ray: www.amazon.com...

I love how this is supposed to take place in Siam (present day Thailand), and later the location is near Khandapur in India, but the attributes of Captain Marvel are described as those of Greek gods and demigods (10:05).
It's like the writers just figured, "Eh, it's not North America, and it's not western Europe. So it's all the same."
It's also adorable how the script of that ancient language at 10:06 is actually stylized English letters.

@@cambridge286 Actually, Superman originally did not fly, but could leap an eighth of a mile. When the Fleisher brothers were commissioned to produce the Superman cartoons, they found the constant leaping would be too labor intensive to animate. So they asked if they could show Superman flying instead to expedite the illustrations. DC comics agreed, and thus Superman gained the power of flight ever after.

The cars are vintage 1930’s/40’s, love the coupes/sedans, and dig those convertibles. Today’s cars look like plastic throw arounds, same squarish style type no matter what brand name it is, and lacking in character appeal, let alone imagination, basically unable to distinguish one from the other. All my old comics and digests are all boxed away somewhere, and honestly, I just don't have money to buy ecomics. Hello, I first posted this video when the fan-edit was made in 2018. For a long time thereafter, it averaged less than 100 hits per day, but I've noticed that there's been a spike in hits over the last month or so. Last month, in early March, the number of hits began to go up quickly, peaking on March 31st at over 23,000 hits on that day alone. The hits have dropped since then to around 7,000 hits on April 2, and if the trend continues should be back to normal in a few more days. So what happened in March? Why the sudden spike to over 23,000 hits per day? In other words, how did you hear about this video? Were you just randomly searching Google or TH-cam for videos about Shazam or Captain Marvel, or did you see a link to the video on a specific website? I'd like to know. Flying effects way ahead of their time..Yes, it would be nice to see it on the big screen.

Trivia: "Captain Marvel", the name, LEGALLY, is owned by Marvel Comics. Shazam (Billy Batson) was originally called "Captain Marvel". Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) was originally created by Bill Parker, C.C. Beck and published by Fawcett Comics back in 1939 as a rip-off of DC Comic's iconic character, Superman. DC, who was known as National Comics at the time, did not like the idea of Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) ripping off Superman, so National/DC sued Parker, Beck and Fawcett in court and LEGALLY bought rights to Captain Marvel the character (Billy Batson). After Parker, Beck and Fawcett went out of business, the Captain Marvel name got snatched by Marvel and Marvel were allowed to do that because Parker, Beck, Fawcett and National/DC forgot to trademark the Captain Marvel name and Marvel trademarked the Captain Marvel name and used the name for their characters (From Mar-Vell all the way to Carol Danvers) who took on the Captain Marvel name. And Marvel had a legal battle with another comic book company called M.F. Enterprises. Like Parker, Beck, Fawcett and DC, M.F. forgot to trademark the Captain Marvel name and created their own version of Captain Marvel who was an alien robot who had the ability to split himself apart and put himself back together again. After M.F. got sued by Marvel and went out of business because of Marvel, Captain Marvel now had two owners. Marvel owned the rights to the Captain Marvel name and DC owned the rights to Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) as a character. DC was unaware that Marvel trademarked the Captain Marvel name first, so DC got a cease-and-desist letter from Marvel telling DC that DC could not use the Captain Marvel name as a title on DC's "Shazam!" comic book covers that were and are published by DC. Shazam (Billy Batson) could still be called "Captain Marvel" in the Shazam!-related comic books published by DC, but Shazam (Billy Batson) could not be called "Captain Marvel" as a title on the front of the Shazam! comic books published by DC. Longtime DC fans who were new to Billy Batson got confused and thought "Shazam" was Billy Batson's superhero name. Later on in 2011, the Shazam! comic books went through reboots and became part of DC's New 52 series and DC completely dropped the Captain Marvel name and officially renamed Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) the character from "Captain Marvel" to "Shazam" to avoid conflict with Marvel Comics. So, long story short, LEGALLY, the Captain Marvels (From Mar-Vell all the way to Carol Danvers) from Marvel Comics are known as "Captain Marvel" and DC's Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) the character, originally owned by Parker, Beck and Fawcett, is legally known as "Shazam". Any comic book superhero fan who has been following superhero comic books and comic book superheroes since the 1930's and onward knows who the TRUE Captain Marvel was and is, and that was and is Billy Batson. DC should have renamed Captain Marvel (Billy Batson) the character's name from "Captain Marvel" to "Captain Marvelous" because back when Billy Batson was with Fawcett, his creators were trying to think of a superhero name for his alter-ego. The original name was going to be "Captain Thunder", but there was already a character named Captain Thunder. So then, Billy Batson's alter-ego was renamed "Captain Marvelous". But here was a problem: the name "Captain Marvelous" could not fit anywhere on the covers of the comic books, inside the comic books, word balloons, thought balloons and narrator boxes so the name was shortened to "Captain Marvel". Renaming the character "Shazam" was a stupid idea because there is already a character named Shazam, who was the wizard who passed on his powers to Billy Batson.

      Partially correct.
Marvel "Snatched" the name because after DC sued the, Fawcet stopped using it and the copyright expired.

Technically, DC didn't legally buy Captain Marvel until the late seventies or early eighties, which is what allowed Marvel a window of about two decades to steal the name. I believe their version first appeared in the late sixties. Smart on their part, and perfectly legal, but very disrespectful to the original character and his creators. It's DC's own fault, though. In response to Marvel's actions, that's when they tried creating a very similar version of Captain Marvel named "Captain Thunder" who fought Superman, and then the rest as you say. The huge fan response to this appearance is actually what led them to license the original Captain Marvel to get him back in print and then eventually just buy the property. To Marvel's credit, they did agree to let DC occasionally put the character's name on covers while adding "the original" for clarity. Or course, they were perfectly able to call him Captain Marvel on the insides in the stories, and did for three more decades before changing the name for no good reason. They should return to calling him Captain Marvel and just call the COMIC "Shazam", not the character. It's not confusing. It was simple enough that he had TWO successful kids shows in the 70s that way. If it didn't confuse six year olds then, it won't confuse adults now.

This is a better version than Doofus Zachary Levi's "Shazam". "Captain Marvel" at the time of the serial was more popular than Superman. I always thought DC screwed up the Re-Branding of Captain Marvel, in the 1990s, the character was finally getting some momentum after Mark Waid and Alex Ross "Kingdom Come" showing Captain Marvel as the one true rival of Superman- the classic splash page of grinning Captain Marvel standing over prostrate Superman. DC won the copyright against Fawcett and they threw in the towel selling off Captain Marvel to DC, who couldn't use the name "Captain Marvel" on the comics due to Marvel Comics trademark of the name, so used Wizard's name for the covers instead, along with that and cheesy Saturday Morning TV show , "Shazam" became the de-facto name of Captain Marvel. DC was not going to get the name "Marvel" back on the cover, in the 1980s they wanted to re-boot the character as "Captain Thunder" (which was Fawcett's original name- hence the Thunderbolt symbol- but seemed another company was using the name so last minute change to "Captain Marvel" ) but "Crisis on Infinite Earths" cancelled the plan. Captain Thunder was revived during the "Flashpoint" saga and there was a plan to finally Re-Boot the entire "Shazam" line-up as "Captain Thunder" but apparently, DC nixed the idea, gave-up and decided to take easy route and name him "Shazam" which was stupid and lazy. Could've gone back to the roots of the original, a young boy Billy Batson who is given the power of a God by Shazam and in his naive innocence calls himself "Captain Thunder"
