you can use tools to wipe a flash drives or hdd MBR(Master Boot Record) partition, the moment you wipe that you wipe any ability to restore lost or old files, you basically factory format the drive..
I imagine the only way to make the data unreadable is by writing junk data, or by using specialised software like Eraser, or reformatting the drive, then wiping free space but that still probably won't work, unless if the drive is completely busted.

The houses still exist, but you don't know where they are. Recovering these files off of the USB is like sweeping the entire country and rewriting down the location of every single intact house you find. If you really want to format a USB and destroy the data on it, you want to shred it. Shredding a file is like demolishing a house before erasing it off of the list, and shredding a USB drive is like demolishing every single house in your list of locations, then burning the list. Now, those houses truly don't exist, and you have the same expanse of forest as you did when you started. Also, DO NOT PLUG IN A USB YOU FIND IN THE WILD. While it can look like a flash drive, a USB can do even more than your keyboard and mouse. It can type in commands and hijack your computer incredibly quickly. That USB you find may have been purposefully planted there to spread a virus/botnet.

If you come across a house that already exists but isn't marked down while you're making a new house, you demolish and build over it. Formatting a USB stick is like burning your list of locations. The houses still exist, but you don't know where they are. Recovering these files off of the USB is like sweeping the entire country and rewriting down the location of every single intact house you find. If you really want to format a USB and destroy the data on it, you want to shred it. Shredding a file is like demolishing a house before erasing it off of the list, and shredding a USB drive is like demolishing every single house in your list of locations, then burning the list. Now, those houses truly don't exist, and you have the same expanse of forest as you did when you started.
Also, DO NOT PLUG IN A USB YOU FIND IN THE WILD. While it can look like a flash drive, a USB can do even more than your keyboard and mouse. It can type in commands and hijack your computer incredibly quickly. That USB you find may have been purposefully planted there to spread a virus/botnet.
