      The platforming is indeed annoying in KH, but Doug's rant on Pooh was undeserved. If you watch the livestreams (which can be found on TH-cam) Doug was mainly frustrated because of timing. "They want something good vs bad maybe with a LITTLE something complicated in between a "I am your father" moment."
    Yeah THAT KH moment was Riku, the BEST FRIEND of Sora, and a GOOD GUY (even he was kind of an ahole as a kid) falling to the darkness and then redeeming himself to hold off Ansem in Hollow Bastion. Even as a kid I remember that cutscene in Hollow Bastion of Sora losing the keyblade to Riku just shredding my emotions. And the best thing about it, is that it's BUILT up PERFECTLY for Riku to be a villain. And not even a full villain, just a child, a LITERAL CHILD (people forget these kids are like in their mid teens during this), who was manipulated by Maleficent to do her bidding.
    You see these little glimpses of him in the beginning just being a jerk to Sora, making fun of him, being really tense all the time even for a kid, and his whole attitude during certain worlds, like Monstro make you go "this....Riku tf you doin". Then when Riku DOES go full betrayal, it hits like a truck, yet at the same time, you kind of saw it coming. You just didn't want to believe he'd actually betray Sora. So it hurts all the more when he does. That stuff with his interactions with Sora in the worlds, is so good, that I kinda wish they HADN'T shown cutscenes of him with Maleficent in Traverse Town. Let the kids work it out that something wasn't right with Riku. And for Riku to redeem himself by holding Ansem off and helping seal the door, made me SCREAM "Hail yeah" cause I loved Riku and it hurt to see him be so grossly manipulated. Riku is *EASILY* one of the best characters in the entire series. He's the exact reason why so many people love Kingdom Hearts-he's complex, yet still simple enough to relate to. That kind of balance is something kingdom hearts does REALLY well and it's a staple of the series to be complex yet simple and clean. It's weird, but it works.
    Sora is the kind of character that kids can look up to-cheerful, upbeat, kind always willing to do what's right, even if it isn't easy. But Riku is the kind of character everyone can RELATE to.

Even though I was aware of the series (I heard about it through commercials on Disney Channel), I never brought myself to play the games and I was a huge Disney fan at the time. The only thing did I did was listen to Utada Hikaru's songs from the games - My Sanctuary being my top favorite. I was 22 when I finally decided to give the games a shot.

      Imo it's easy to digest if you're playing each game with a few exceptions. The scene I'm especially thinking about is that long 10 minute plot dump cutscene that's before the boss fight against Demyx in KH2FM.
      But I will say it's a little annoying KH3 references plot details from the mobile game "Union Cross" which was about the ancient keyblade war. I really do hope they at least make another CG movie of the rest of the plot because I don't have the attention span to sit through the uninteresting presentation of the cutscenes in said mobile game.

    11:52 Okay, the thing with that part, is that that's not the actual character talking. Its some kind of apparition that took on the form of that character (Selphie), and was using it as a means of asking Sora that question, sorta like how when a hero goes on a spiritual journey, they're asked these questions that allow them to know themselves better. Also, its part of the gameplay, as the answers are what determine how you level up through the game.

    Awww When Disney wasn't afraid to do something as out there as teaming up with Square Enix, to make a video game where the most iconic Disney characters, as well as the most iconic Final Fantasy characters, fighting for a key that is as large as waste high. Also, it's in the hand of a kid who uses it like a sword, to fight monsters alongside Sir Goofey and Wizard Donald. Hearing this, you would think it's just in the realm of possibility to be plausible, but there's no way creative power, time, and money was spent on something so ludicrous. And that's the amazing part. This crossover game looks beautiful in animation, and shot composition. I'm really surprised Nostalgia Critic didn't mention this in the review, but the music score for this game is absolutely incredible, and most of the soundtrack is an original score produced for the this new crossover video game IP. This was definitely a gamble, and man did it pay off for both companies. Btw, let's not forget that this game created an epic battle that no child could've imagined happening in any form of media, Donald and Goofy, and friend, fight Sephiroth in a high stakes battle to the death, all the while "One-Winged Angel" is played throughout the battle.
    Sadly, Disney 20 years later would've never agreed to something so un-formulaic with no guarantee of a profit, so what's the point. Art and artistic integrity matter not to a company that brought the audience the soulless film "Lion King 2019". They definitely wouldn't allow iconic characters like Donald and Goofy, let alone Mickey Mouse, to ever be in something they don't have absolute control of. Also, Disney would be VERY angry and upset today to see the scene where Sora goes into a book and meets an obvious life-like portrayal of a dear friend to Disney, the President Xi Jinping of China.
    I hope Disney looses the credibility that it garnered through animated films like the original "Lion King" or "Toy Story". They use to be these trail blazers of animation, but now those who care about the art of filmmaking all know that their hacks who have a lot of money, can spend a relatively small amount of their vast wealth to create something un-original, and still make money, cause people still think of the Disney from 20 years ago when they see a trailer/poster with the Disney logo on it today. Considering "Lion King 2019", so quickly became the highest grossing animated movie of all time, I have very little hope that the average movie goer will look past their excited expectations, that Disney logo that has a history of great animated films, and their nostalgia of Disney.

    • @winterfire567
      @winterfire567 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I get what they were trying to do with Riku, but it was so rapidfire rushed it came off as incredibly sloppy and poorly written. Literally Riku runs off on his own, then Sora meets Donald and Goofy and then the next scene we see Riku being shown with Maleficent and "oooh look, Sora made new friends, he doesn't need you anymore." It really just speaks to how incredibly naive Riku has to be written to immediately eat that up so much so that he doesn't even stick around to hear Sora's side of the story, and becomes his enemy for the rest of the game.

      I dunno. I think they built it up enough to be believeable. Even in the beginning, Kairi wanted to get Sora away from Riku cause she could sense his growing darkness. He was a bit of a jerk to Sora even when they were at home without outside influence. And even in future games the one thing Riku cares about more than anything are his friends. He'll do anything to keep them safe. Heck he couldn't even face Sora after taking on Ansems form due to guilt. Even though he did it FOR Sora. I personally think hes a very well written character. Remember he was around 13 Ish so a CHILD could easily be manipulated by an adult like Malifecent. Happens all the time in reality.

    Depending on how analytical you are, it can be hard to get into Kingdom Hearts now if you didn't grow up with it. Like one thing I find is that anime and jrpg fans who missed it for whatever reason tend to be more critical of it since they compare it to other shows and games in those media. I think it's good that Doug isn't into JRPGs and not really big on anime since that means that despite being able to see its flaws, that's not weigh on him and he can find more to enjoy in it and see what it's going for even without a personal connection to the series.

      yeah that like the people making essay about why the nen/ki/chakra/haki/ or whatever the hell was called the spirit energy from bleach is the best power system of all animes and other animes are shit because they don't have a complex power system like that and im like: look if i want to get suck into the story and characters i have to be emotionally conected, and the details don't make you emotionly conected too, theres just details. in fact what pretty much what kill the matrix sequels and the star wars prequels to many of us was because they went way too much into details to the point we didn't give a shit about the story and characters, world building in the details is fine but focus more in the characters journey and the story progresion if you want people to get hooked, thats the number one priority on storytelling at least if we are talking about big epics like star wars, lord of the rings, and even avatar. Yeah, it was a pain in the ass. I also remember Sephiroth as a hidden boss and he was SO tough. He was, by far, the hardest fight in the game. The final boss, I do now kind of remember it being a pain but nowhere near as hard. That said, I loved this game back then.

    Since I know that he's going forward with the series, I'm happy he's got the golden rule down pat in part 1: the spectacle takes priority over story sensibilities
    I am curious to know what games he went through, the intro only showed 1, 2, and 3, and I'm wondering if chat yelled at him enough to play the other ones for this damn series to make sense

    Ah it's good to have Disneycember back! In fact, I think I'll do a thing where I keep track of the stuff Doug reviews and label them as good, okay/meh, and bad to see where most of the stuff leans towards. I kind of did that to myself in the past, so now it's time to do so for real!
    Good: Kingdom Hearts
    Okay/Meh:
    Bad:
    So yeah, a good start to DisneyCember 2021! And on another note, yeah Square Enix is apparently infamous for multiple final boss phases. And another thing to add is that when it comes to video game crossovers, Kingdom Hearts is one of the most well-known ones alongside Super Smash Bros.! And fun fact: Super Mario 64 inspired Kingdom Hearts!

    I got to play Kingdom Hearts around Christmas back in 2003, so Christmas and Kingdom Hearts go hand-and -hand to me. I'm probably one of the few people that really loves the first Kingdom Hearts, but that doesn't mean I dislike the sequels. Kingdom Hearts is definitely a great series with great gameplay, a fantastic musical score, and memorable characters. While the rest of the sequels go in radical directions and constant recons, the first game will always have a special place in my heart.😊😅😍

    This series means a lot to me, not because I played it as a kid though. This was my lockdown activity. During the first lockdown when I became unemployed, to keep my sanity and give me a task, I played through EVERY Kingdom Hearts game. I even started a blog about it. It gave me a reason to wake up in the morning, and a sense of purpose in the weirdest way. Honestly the themes of light and darkness and the sappier moments really worked for me all the more during that f***ed up time.
    For some people Covid sanity was Animal Crossing; for me, it was Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Hearts was there for me when I needed it, and I'll be forever grateful.

    This is one of those games where when I first encountered it, I was "uh, really?" Then I actually played it and absolutely loved it. My wife doesn't like to play RPG games but loves watching the story unfold, so she watched me play it. She absolutely squee'd with delight when Beast showed up (Beauty And The Beast is one of her favorite animated movies).

    This was such an awesome video! I'm really excited and I hope this leads to more video game reviews like this. I know that JRPGs aren't most people's cups of tea but I think that the story of some can prove strong enough to outweigh the not always favorable battle mechanics and such. I find myself drawn to them for the story even though sometimes they are IMPOSSIBLY hard and INFURIATING but it doesn't matter because I'm enjoying the journey I am on and I know that the struggles I go through will just make me appreciate the character's strengths more. A friend of mine just bought all the kingdom hearts games and started playing them, so it was weird funny timing for this video to be released. And like I said, I hope this leads to more VG reviewing content! :)

    My older brother was massively into Kingdom Hearts when we were growing up as kids during the 2000s. I have such fond memories of watching him play the first two games in his room all the time because he was much more of the gamer than I was at the time (and also, I was probably a bit younger compared to the age demographic for this type of game to have the ability to play a game like that even though it was Disney and rated E). I wish I played the games at the time when we were growing up and I was happy that I got to finally start playing a little bit of the first game years later while I was in my third year of college. My boyfriend at the time owned a PS4 and he got me the PS4 re-release of the first two games together and I was playing the first couple of levels with him in his dorm. Sadly, we broke up a month after we started our senior year three years ago, so I haven't had the chance to revisit the game since then and it's currently sitting on my shelf at home. Hopefully, I will find a way I can play this game fully and experience the entire thing like my brother got to.

      Update: I finally got myself a PS2 slim this week and just started playing Kingdom Hearts today! I can’t wait to play through it and continue with the others after I finish! This was my first PS2 game, and I immediately loved it. At least until the second Riku fight in Hollow Bastion. It took me so many tries to beat him, and you couldn't skip the cutscene before the fight. But I've played the Final Mix remasters on PS3 and PS4. In fact, I'm playing through the entire series again now.

    • @RussianJackal
      @RussianJackal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Damn! I left the following comment before scrolling through others, so I guess that fight pissed off a lot of people!
      Riku I wanted to kill with a shovel, after… doing stuff with the handle. He was a tough boss that I had to fight a few times, which is fine, but the battle had a long-ass talking cutscene, which I for some reason couldn’t skip (I’m an elderly 35-year old coot who actually played the game in 2003, so maybe the scene is skippable in the re-release, or I just stupidly couldn’t find the right button). Anyone else have that issue?

    • @joshuariddensdale2126
      @joshuariddensdale2126 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RussianJackal The Final Mix version does add the option of skipping cutscenes. As well as adjustable difficulty (though the secret ending is inaccessible on Beginner), two additional scenes (one being Riku arriving in Hollow Bastion), and an additional boss fight.

    11:43 Playing this game when Kingdom Hearts came out in 2002, I grew with it, I mean its understandable Doug I mean you would of loved this. For me and others its cemented with childhood and it's basically about that. This part is a dream sequence of Soras beginning journey. Asking questions like this is saying too the playing of what you want in life or what your afraid of. As a kid I never understood that but I was amazed by the game when I got it. Today or this year started replaying it and got the orginal ps2 and guidebook becouse I live this game. This part is retrospective, it's an undertone with the creator that said it's an existential game what added into it. Vague as you said yes how it comes across becouse your seeing something there too it. Its basically the intro of childhood, the 2000s generation, the time where we are in this tinted glass, our curiosity about the world around us. Something that has light with the character and the player themselfs. We have curiosty, we ambitions, we are unsure, we are afraid, we sees the white doves representing love deepest part. It's done in a simple way but has an undertone that I could recognise years later. Hollow Bastion and End if world have toned too them too. Destiny Island has a tone with peace tranquility as the kids want to explore well, the adventure or adult world, that's why you dont see the adults in this. There is so much to say about this first game. Besides the spin offs and how it ties with them, this was the first game with it's own message and can be by itself. Its beautiful heartfelt game that the creator had an idea what he was doing.
