Agreed. Pretty much the only thing I was looking forward to see in this movie was its version of Be Prepared, because such an amazing song cannot possibly be fucked into oblivion. Long story short: They fucked it into oblivion.
@@Killjoy45 Right?! I was pissed with a lot of things in this movie, Be prepared was one of those things! They fucked it up so bad it wasn't even funny. It felt like something that was thrown in at last minute.
I adore the whole "IT'S NOT REAL!" running gag Critic says, because it's true. The story isn't *supposed* to be real and yet the filmmakers attempt to defend the new "Lion King" as being "the real version". If the new film really wanted to go for realism, why did they have to make Africa look like poop smeared all over the "set" - Africa SHOULDN'T HAVE to look like that! You know it's bad when "Out of Africa" has a realistic African setting in comparison, with greenery - and for that matter why make the animals look less colorful?
*Introducing, Disney Drugs!* You want Disney Dope? Mickey Mouse Meth? Nostalgia Nicotine? Cash Cow Crack? Hakuna Hash and Matata Marijuana? Well, we got them all!
There are few differences between behaviours and drugs. Behaviour and mind have a feedback loop, engaging in a behaviour can influence the mind, everything from smiling, dancing, meditating, etc, influences your mind. When you get companies researching this and understanding it they find ways to manipulate you without you ever realising, these days everything from supermarkets to entertainment are using psychological and neurological sciences to influence you.
My problems with the remake: 1. Some characters are hard to tell apart; For example, in the original, Simba and Nala as cubs were easy to distinguish because Simba had a saturated shade, while Nala was brighter, and had green eyes. Here, they look far too similar. 2. Characters like Zazu and Pumba look far less colourful than in the original. 3. They took out Scar's "Be Prepared" song.
Yeah, I don't have a problem with CGI animals talking. Aslan is a good example of how it can be done well. The problem here was the lack of emotions while Aslan talked and showed emotions.
Yeah and both were produced at least partially by Disney and he aged magnificently. So why couldn’t they do that here? Are you telling me they couldn’t do what they did much better over a decade ago!?
It says a lot that people literally DON’T talk about this movie, or like, any of the remakes anymore. Like after the first couple months people genuinely stop talking about them. They get forgotten with the speed of only the trashiest films. There is always more hype around their release than the film itself. This movie has ALREADY faded into obscurity. Even the people know who did enjoy this... Don’t talk about it.
Except for Cinderella. People I talk to still say how much they genuinely enjoyed that one. That was the first one though, so they gradually started going downhill from there
@SxyChicDisney Thats because it’s Cinderella. It’s a story that has been told more or less the exact same way a hundred times. There IS no way to mess that one up unless you are particularly inept at film making and story telling. Let’s not applaud fish for swimming. Cinderella is not a high bar to reach.
WHats to talk about honestly? When something is devoided of creativity or meaning, so when there's Litteraly NOTHING, you can't Talk about it. And the few times they tried to do something remotly creative, they failed so hard at it cause they always goes back to their old habits, people do talk about it, but not in a way that they like so... There is NOTHING.
You'll be saying THAT again, if they have THE BALLS to remake Bambi's movie. The remake LOOKS real, and the original FEELS real. This is why, IF THEY DO GET THE NERVE TO MAKE A LIVE-ACTION CGI VERSION OF BAMBI'S MOVIE, from 1942-- I will be proud in two ways: *I will have pride in its failure to fully pay tribute in being a remake of THE achievement of Walt Disney Studios history, *and pride of MILLIONS of fans HEAVILY criticizing it, that the original is. . . well, *MILLIONS* of times better than the remake.
@@scotttrail522 just the thought of a Bambi remake…after all the terrible remakes they had made…..just no…Bambi I feel like are one of those movies that need to be left alone. That and also Finding Nemo
Honestly they changed almost none of James Earl Jones' lines. They could've just had him sign a piece of paper allowing them to use his original takes from the 1994 film!
Blake Adamson No I’d argue the writing was crazy good as it was the same as the original. Babe was fortunate as it didn’t need to be compared against something better, and talking animals was still novel. And I bet my arse George Miller put proper effort into it.
Simba's reaction to Mufasa's death in the original: "NOOOOOOOOOO! Dad, wake up. Someone help!" Simba's reaction in the new one: "Oh shoot, my dad died. Sucks I guess"
James: Simba..... come to me son.... jump...okay, Jon this is just pointless. I can't take this seriously. Jon: Here is your coffee. Now shut up and read the lines. The fans will love it. Trust me. James: Fine, I guess... *loudly blowing raspberries*
So we’re not going to talk about Beyoncé basically singing to herself in “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”? Because I barely heard Simba’s voice in that one. He was more backgrounds vocal, this was no duet.
They couldn't hired the original voice for Nala?, But went with Beyonce? Adult animated Simba and Adult live-action Simba are probably the worst voice actors Disney hired
@jimmyjim4165 At the end of the video, Doug talks about a good organization that helps disabled US military Veterans like me. We call each other brother and sister as a sign of mutual respect.
Why do I feel like Doug started recording his cats' antics during quarantine and needed an excuse to post it so he chose to review the cgi Lion King lol.
Mufasa: "Everything the light touches is our kingdom." Simba: "What about that shadowy place?" Mufasa: "That's the live action remake. You must never go there Simba."
Last year I went to see Hans Zimmer in orchestra and the 5 minute Lion King segment made me feel more than the whole of this awful film. In this film they seem to chop up the best parts of the soundtrack and throw them in random scenes to try and trick the audience into feeling something because its so boring. In the stampede scene they cut out the BEST part of the soundtrack; the drums that start off the stampede just before Simba starts running. In the orchestra they had THREE different drummers (one on a timpani, and other two on separate drum kits), and when they played it felt like the o2 arena was going to fall down. This film? Nah let's just cut the drums out, who needs anything good 😑
That buildup is so important! I still get goosebumps to the stampede to this day because of that haunting buildup from the drums and strings to the choir and horns.
Wait, WHAT???!! Why would they do that?! I remember different instruments used during the stampede being used. Not just drums, but the light intense sounds of the violins/string instruments. All the instuments were used to express not only young Simba's fear and desperation, but how scary and serious the situation was. It felt like the audience wasn't just witnessing the stampede, but could feel the impact of everything and every character. It was beautiful, masterfully done, and brought you into the scene. The remake, not nearly as impactful. It failed hard
I know this is easy to say for someone like me who doesn’t have kids, but even if I did, I wouldn’t take them to see these garbage remakes of Disney Classics that were mostly old fables to begin with. I feel like I can’t poke fun at this shit without acknowledging what’s already been said about the “original” animated films. Also, I get why Doug and Rob added that poignantly funny Jon Favreau bit at the end. I just wish there was a less compromising way of making gems like The Mandalorian. Rob Walker is a dead ringer, too! It’s creepy!! 💚🤣🤣💚
@Parker Brown I understand what people are saying about this remake and personally I still enjoy it. But I agree the original Lion King is still the best.
@Parker Brown I totally agree! It has great humor and spastick, the Dogs never talked but they had a lot of expressions and personality, Cruella was funny and scary, the music was pretty. I love tis movie, it's a good remake :D
"Be our guest" was funnier than Timon's hula dance in the original... i burst out laughing in the theatre when he pointed at Pumbaa and said "your dinner!"
His cats are adorable and I love how he got another cat, probably a little brother for Chaplin. As an animal lover, Doug, I appreciate you giving these kitties a home
When I saw the movie, there was a child crying during the first few minutes, it was annoying at first but now I realize that was the cry of childhood innocence being killed
I probably would have applauded you if I was in that theatre. Not sure how loud I said it but I audibly went “well that was anticlimactic” after the be prepared moment
“Talking” animals was done well in “Babe.” And “Homeward Bound” did it successfully, as well, without the animals’ mouths even moving. And they were made in the 90s! These were real animals (and a few puppets), yet their personalities, thoughts, relationships, etc. felt authentic as sentient characters.
I would add designs as well, the lions of the remake.. i had a hard time to tell Simba from Scar, especially during the final confrontation, Babe was really good, at least, efforts were put into it along with ideas, the remake of Lion King tried to copy the original animated version, and failed.
@@94KSpeed That was hard to tell them apart, during the last fight i was so confused, i thought Simba was thrown and teleported himself just after that, to think in the original they had their own designs.
Lion King (original movie) - Action packed, interesting characters, amazing visuals, expressive actions, and hilarious hijinks Lion King Remake - 😐 what’s emotion? Never heard of it.

With Cinderella I heard we’re getting another one 🙄 but it’s with Camila as a Hispanic Cinderella which I will still watch lol
Hannah Papernick-Yudin that’s a disservice to community theaters. At least they try with what limited resources they have. Disney barely tries with the almost unlimited resources they have.
And kills all the existing cubs like Mufasa would've done if The Lion King were trying to be realistic. And where're the male cubs willingly leaving the pride to avoid problems of incest?! Come on, Disney. I thought you wanted a realistic Lion King.
@@47ratsinahoodie See, this is why Scar is the rightful king. He has a black mane and he restored natural order by throwing out the "circle of life" nonsense and allowed the hyenas to share hunting grounds.
Nothing can replace the energy and grandeur of the original, from Hans Zimmer's epic score to the lively performances of Irons, Atkinson, Lane, etc, and the unforgettable songs, the original Lion King introduced me not to just good storytelling, but GREAT storytelling.
To this day, the scene where Mufasa dies and Simba trying to wake him brings tears to my eyes. When I saw this in theaters, I felt nothing. Absolutely nothing.
That was exactly my reaction to Be Prepared. I didn't know until half way through that THAT was the song. My disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined.
I very specifically remembering him sing those last few notes and being like "Why didn't he sing the whole thing? Jeremy Irons didn't because he can't sing, but this guy could have done an epic rendition if he'd actually sang it!"
I didn't even watch the movie, my parents watched it downstairs in the living room and I just listened, I didn't even see the movie and just by the dialogue I knew it was shit That's how fucking bad the movie was and I was almost about to puke when I heard the "be prepared" scene
That was the very moment, THE MOMENT it was ruined for me! I know that some of the songs were a bit watered down in this movie, but Be Prepared is one of, may even the best disney villain songs to come out disney, nay, animation as a whole! And yet seeing it like this.... its like killing your own grandmother, drowning a sack of puppies, while spreding Covid 19! It's a descrace!
We got seriously robbed of the best song. If Chiwetel Ejiofor can sing then they should have let him. Would have been the highlight of an otherwise paint by numbers remake
And in the words of The Joker: "It'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic!... Nah what the heck? I will laugh anyway! *hysterical laughter*" Mark Hamill ftw... posers :P
Disney: "Our remake is flawed we don't care...BE PREPARED." Us: "For what? Cringing?' Disney: "Hakuna Make-moolah, what a wonderful phrase...It means more remakes, for the rest of your days!" Us: *yells NO in the style of the original young Simba*
"While others search for what they can take, a true king searches for what he can give." Funny considering Disney takes our money and doesn't give us a good movie.
I’ve heard a lot of people saying that Mufasa’s line delivery was flat because the voice actor is old, but I don’t think that’s the case. I am pretty sure that he was thinking, “didn’t I do this 25 years ago? Why am I doing it again?” while saying every line.
@ in Christopher lees defense its easier for him to look intimadating especially with age. Looking like a proud king...not as easy with age especially in the voice
I don't know, from the interviews it sounds like he got no real direction for the voice acting and they just went with the first take they got because Favreau was too in awe of James Earl Jones to have him do anything over again
When you put ur kitties mute, I know what they where saying Chaplin: Hey Buster, Do you remember when I say we don´t need to wake up for work? Buster: Of Course! I´m Buster! Chaplin: OF Course you´re! I´m Chaplin! And Nostalgia have muted us! Buster: Oh meow god, Why´d he do that? Chaplin: Only to show our majestic way of life as the superior life form... Buster: Did he?? Chaplin: I´m Chaplin!
The Nostalgia Critic had a review of live action remake of The Lion King where he was saying, "Pussy ass bitch!" I just loved when he said it. I also loved the part where Simba was going, "Meow, meow, meow, meow! Meow, meow, meow, meow!" like the Meow Mix song.
It's also because Scar likes to emotionally torture his victims which is why he does the whole "never return" speech and says the whole incident is all his fault.
Not sure which cat-themed 2019 movie was worse. This was technically "better", but Cats was bad in a far more memorable way. Also, if you're going to make James Earl Jones reprise his role from the original, why make him say the same exact lines? He sounded like he only did it out of contractual obligations. Why not just use recordings from the original? I imagine it'd be faster, cheaper, and result in a better final product.
Best guess? The original recordings weren't "high-def" or "hi-fi" enough for modern theater sound systems and probably sounded incredibly out of place with the other recordings. Yes, I know there are high-def releases of the original Lion King that sound fine, but most likely James' lines in those versions sound like they belong because all of the audio is the same fidelity, and the upscaling (or whatever the audio equivalent of boosting quality is called) was applied equally to every track. However, no matter how much audio upscaling you apply, the highest quality recording from the 90's is never going to be as high quality as a modern highest quality recording. It would be like if the Power Rangers reboot movie inserted an upscaled Zordon from the 90's show instead of completely redoing the character with Bryan Cranston. It could, technically, be done but it would be so out of place and awkward to witness.
Why bring back JRJ at all? It defeats the purpose of being a remake. In fact, that would be a fun project: Take the audio from the Original and try to match it up with the Remake. Or do the same in reverse.
That's not the point, it ISN"T real. If you're gonna 3d generate everything, why not make it more colourful/ pleasant to look at? So now it's both "not-real" and "unpleasant".
Real life is both more colorful and also less saturated that anything a camera can show. 3-D make or documentary, there is no way to get it just right. When you can, erring on the side of too colorful is far better than washed out. Nothing in life is washed out. I hate when games and movies do it to be more "real" it's not more real, it's just dull.
Here's the thing about the expressions though: real animals have a greater range of emotion than this movie does. When cats are scared their ears lie back and their tails tuck in, when they're angry they puff up, furrows their brows, their tails swish and they hiss. When they're sad, they make themselves small. And when they're happy, they are more lively and their eyes get wide. This??? THISSS???? Every single shot of this from an animal's perspective says "mild interest". Like the effort put into this movie.
@@ironcladnomad5639 "Don't you want to evolve and enlighten your audience?" Well, they probably frequent Tumblr and Twitter, so they probably have as much emotional development as a classroom full of preschoolers. In other words, don't hold your breath.
15:32 .. There is one thing that DOES work perfectly between the voice and what I'm seeing.... it's Doug having Nala say "pussy-ass bitch" to Simba; that worked flawlessly! Had me exploding and go into a six minute cascade of laughter.
I only have three things to say about this review: - The movie idea you described in the beginning sounds AMAZING! It's what we should have gotten with this and I demand that at the very least Disney put the Broadway musical on Disney+ for us. - This movie looks SO SOULLESS, but the cats in the review were wonderful. Hope to see more of them. - Thank you for being fair to Jon Favreau. Directors can't always say no to a bad project if they want one of their own green lit later. It sucks that his name it attached to such a lifeless dementor of a movie, but he probably just made what Disney told him to make. Hopefully it all evens out in the end with more Mandalorian. (Though quick side note, Dave Filoni deserves a lot of credit for how good that is too.)
In Disney studios where they recorded/animated the remake there's a glowing sign next to one of the rooms that says "Nala in use", take that as you wish

18:50 I really hate that Mufasa doesn't call him brother here. This was really important in this scene because in the original he wasn't giving an order as a king, he was really counting on his brother to be there for him
27:31 I genuinely think that, more than anything, ruins the movie. That moment is what hammers in the moral of the original Lion King. It's the moment he stops running from the past and instead *learns from it,* confronts it, and takes responsibility for his role as, *THE LION KING.*

Nature documentaries have more color than this movie.

My problems with the remake:
Regarding point 1:
I had seen several trailers, and at least one review on youtube with plenty clips before I realised which one was Scar.
@@obd9660 My problems with the remake:
Everything.
Aslan shows more emotion, pride and color than any of the lions in this movie.
Yeah, I don't have a problem with CGI animals talking. Aslan is a good example of how it can be done well. The problem here was the lack of emotions while Aslan talked and showed emotions.
Thats crazy too
Yeah and both were produced at least partially by Disney and he aged magnificently. So why couldn’t they do that here?
Are you telling me they couldn’t do what they did much better over a decade ago!?
And Narnia came out 15 years before this film. How sad is that.
Even the puppet Aslan from the 1980s Narnia TV miniseries was better than the lions in the remake of Lion King.
Don’t talk about it.
fair enough
Well-put, and that's one of the biggest reasons that I do not go to see the live-action remakes. The remakes just won't form a lasting legacy.

Tamara wrote a better live-action "Lion King" in less than 2 minutes than Disney did in a year.
Damn right!
This film? Nah let's just cut the drums out, who needs anything good 😑
I saw that a few years ago, it was absolutely incredible
That buildup is so important! I still get goosebumps to the stampede to this day because of that haunting buildup from the drums and strings to the choir and horns.
There’s a lot of reuse of cues from the original, often in inappropriate scenes and without emotional impact. The new cues? Forgettable
They fucked with zimmers soundtrack
Why?!
Every time I see the 2019 lion king all I can think is ” this sucks, lets go watch the better version”.
That’s why I hate it I fear that dumb parents will show this version above the superior version first to their kids. That’s a hate crime

I agree, i'm not sure why they bothered the actor to reprise his role as Mufasa, if there is barely any differences in the lines..
Cats is at least kitsch

This one did make me realize just how great the expressions really are in the original.

I wonder if the expressions in this movie would've improved even a little bit if they had only hired character animators who owned cats
My thought EXACTLY.
EXACTLY!!!
"Not as much as I wanna make money."
DEAD.
Disney live-action remakes in a nutshell
It's funny because it's true.
@@LucyLioness100 Disney in general, I'd say.
*"she made that face that gave birth to a million furries"*
Oh god.
That is one enormous understatement
Oh yes.
So now we all know whom to blame...
DISNEY GAVE US FURRIES!!!!
(that's the real reason why Disney must die!)
Don't pretend it ain't true! I saw that face and was like "GUHHH, I'm a furfag for life!" XD
@@TheDeadlyBlueWolf I am a bit of a grey-mane so I am wondering is that some kind of self deprecating humor?
I only have three things to say about this review:
- The movie idea you described in the beginning sounds AMAZING!
The Black Panther was a better Lion King than this remake.
Exactly
SpinningIris that’s a fact.
SpinningIris I agree
Ooof.
Yikes
In Disney studios where they recorded/animated the remake there's a glowing sign next to one of the rooms that says "Nala in use", take that as you wish
This movie MAY have worked with they axed ALL the dialogue. Every. Single. Line. And just had Morgan Freeman narrate the entire story.
Or David Attenborough! Go all in on the documentary idea.
@@FoxIord Holy crap, that actually sounds like a cool movie.
@@whynot-tomorrow_1945 Remember that Walking with the Dinosaurs movie that no one remembers? It was going to be without dialouge, but it was shoehorned in at the last minute. I'm thinking that idea, but Lion King.
@@FoxIord I swear to god, I thought I had dreamt that Walking with Dinosaurs movie. Had a bit of fever-dream quality with the shoehorned dialogue haha xD
I would've been fine with a narrator. I mean, It's something different at least.
Also, a shoutout to David Tennant who I think can do a good voice over.
18:50 I really hate that Mufasa doesn't call him brother here. This was really important in this scene because in the original he wasn't giving an order as a king, he was really counting on his brother to be there for him
That’s what I have to say the same thing.
27:31 I genuinely think that, more than anything, ruins the movie. That moment is what hammers in the moral of the original Lion King. It's the moment he stops running from the past and instead *learns from it,* confronts it, and takes responsibility for his role as,
*THE LION KING.*
14:19 Did anyone else notice when Critic shouted "SHUT UP!" Nala's ears perked up, as if to say "Who said that? Did someone tell me to shut up?" XD
If they wanted the animals to talk in this movie, why didn't they go the 'Homeward Bound' route and make the animals talk telepathically?
I bet that would've done wonders. BTW, loved "Homeward Bound" since I was little. Still wanting a Golden Retriever of my own someday.
Or the way that Doug let his cats talk, the same way, but cuter. Also homeward bound is great.
@@darthstarkiller1912 I agree. It would have worked out way better.
Also, I'm planning on showing my kiddo Homeward Bound as part of our homeschool unit on the geography of the Sierra Nevada and the American West. It's such a great film.
and also _sing_ telepathically?
Absolutely! I felt ten times more emotion when Sassy fell down the waterfall than CGI Mufasa dying here.
Animated Nala: the face that gave birth to a million furries
Live Action Nala: the face that gave birth to a million poachers
Remember the bedroom eyes
Nekonomicon Oh? I just called them the “do me” eyes but yeah.
@@NerdyNeutron Hakuna her mata tas XD
@@NerdyNeutron That's essentially what bedroom eyes are
Imagine they remake A Bug's Life and Finding Nemo and use real fish and bugs
That would be horrible
Koubu Driver not happening
@@HeroTheHedgehog999 Hope not
@@DropoutRenegade I have a phobia of bugs, so that film would just be the end of me.
Don't give them the idea, they MIGHT do that
