My opinion is that I can't wait for an update For real though, my suggestion would be to get the man to tell the ex the truth first, then go back to the company and try to make amends with things
Take the high road, but don't try to reconcile. Get some sort of written proof or a recording where he admits his wrongdoing, and the deal he offered. This isn't even to hold it over his head, but rather gauge what his plans/intentions from his reaction. If he doesn't even bat an eye, is thankful that you accepted at all, or something along those lines, then you do what you can to unfuck the situation there. If he's reluctant for it but goes through, than you fix it, but now you shouldn't feel like a jerk if you decide to hold it over him. If he denies it, don't bother. He lied about changing his ways, and just doesn't want his legacy tarnished. Although you should probably let him know that your offer will stand, so long as that condition is met before you start work.

You obviously take the job. You can decide later what to actually do. But at least take some of the money back.
