I really appreciate your knowledge, abilities and outlook ! It’s priceless and price worthy in my opinion….
Thanks man!! This one's been in family for decades !!
Very nice Falcon! Really desirable, in my book!
The Falcon has a passionate following no doubt. I'd have a 2 dr hardtop in a heartbeat!!
Looks like a nice car!👌
It's super solid car!! Little touch up and a buff she'll be awesome
Sounds like a good plan.
Cheers mate and thanks for watching!!
What a sweetie!
Agreed!! Thanks for watching!!
Nice Falcon Falcon! Lol My second car was a 1963 futura convertible. Same red, red interior, black top. It had the whopping 90 hp 144 six. Bench seat, 2 speed auto on the column. There were no transmission lines to the radiator. It had a vent in the tail end of the transmission and one up front. I paid $250 for it, and it was in premium condition. The paint buffed out nice, I had a new top installed, $160 back then. Oh, how I yearn for the old days! 😂
Hmmm , wonder where that car is today huh? I'll bet ya miss it!
A car that gave me, as an 18 year old apprentice, an automotive boner, was this gorgeous 1964 XM[?] Futura two door Hard top that I saw parked in Sydney one day. It was the stunning black paint with rich red interior that did it for me. These were RARE even then. I have been a sucker for deep Black paint jobs with Rich Red interiors ever since. It's like a magnet for me when I see something like that, even after 57 years. Oooh, I'm getting 'feelings' just thinking about it.
The early 60's new Falcon I drove didn't have any brakes either. One of those unforgettable cars in one's life.
Never a good feeling!!
That's mint....kiwi. A real time capsule. Keep it as it is.
Shes solid as a rock
She really is !!
The first generation Falcon was always one of my favorite cars. My mom had a 62 2 door sedan that we bought back in 1981 for $850.00. It had 42K on the clock, 6 cylinder 3 on the tree. Drove the tires off it and sold it 8 yrs later. 2 yrs later we bought it back and went thru het all over again! Wish I had her today!
I bet you do !! Lots of memories there!
Thats a gem. I concur keep the 6, great little work horse.
Thanks man and thanks for watching!!
Early Falcons were notorious for muffler rot. This was caused by the muffler being at the end of the exhaust. By the time that the gasses reached the muffler, the water vapour in the exhaust had condensed into water unless longer journeys were undertaken. One of the by-products of combustion is sulphur. When mixed with water, a mild strength form of sulphuric acid is formed. It might take a year or two, depending on the usage rate, but low usage cars suffered the most. Muffler shops LOVED early Falcons around here, & probably in NZ as well.
We had an XK wagon with a 144 & a two speed auto. What a slug. We also ran a Mobil service station in the mid sixties. We saw a LOT of rotten mufflers & more than a few mufflers that were replaced with a length of straight tube. Maybe we "might" have been guilty there.
Very true, exhausts didn't last back then like they seem to these days... 😁👍😎
Hi Kiwi! I believe that a 300ci ford six is a good candidate for an engine swap. I checked my local Facebook marketplace and there seem to be several out there! I wrote this before the end of the video and it looks like you where already on the right track with an engine/trans swap! P.S. still looking forward to your getting that cool chevy pickup on the lift! Cheers mate!
Yeah it's just different enough to not look original and require a lot of modifications. At that point a 302 would have to be considered also
@@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160 Oh...I didn't know the 300 was a pain to swap in...I like strait 6s.I have a 292 six in my '53 chevy I'm just happy that your not putting a v8 in it! It should be a great little driver!
I had a '63 convertible with the 170 and manual trans. Mine had paint-matching blue metallic upholstered bucket seats and the chrome-top center console, just like this one. I always assumed that the buckets and console had been swapped out of a Fairlane, didn't realize they were stock. Metallic blue with a white power top- I miss that car even more, now!
Yup, buckets and a console were a factory option !!! Very desirable !!
Futura was pretty upmarket
All that sounds good
Thanks and thanks for watching !!
Two door post Falcon in very solid shape is a very nice find. The 200 I6 would be a very nice upgrade. Thanks for sharing! Cheers! 😎👍🏎🏁🏁
Thank you for watching !!
The 250 cross flow engine would be an even nicer upgrade.
@@KB10GL it would be ! Not as original looking though.....
200 and 250 are too long. 221 [3.6] is the go.
@ If a 250 cross flow was installed, I guarantee, it would still look the same. Well, right up until one opened the hood.
Pretty cool little Ford
That 200 C4 swap would be a great way to go. Back in my youth, early 70's. We did a couple V8 swaps into early Falcons. First one was a learning experience. We broke a lot of original to the 6 banger parts. Second one we used a lot of Mustang parts and didn't brake as much. But as we were young, we always looked for that braking point. Finding it was not always a good thing. If this Falcon were mine today, I would do the 200 C4 swap and keep it looking stock and drive it with far more care than I did as a kid.
Sounds like your talking about me as a kid😁👍😎
It’s crazy we never built the 2 door in greater numbers in Australia, old granny four doors all day long…the muffler is OEM? I once bought a nos XP muffler from ford spare parts desk in 86 just like that one but new 😎
The 4 doors dominated !! Practical yes but cool..... I'm not so sure ...🤔
Same in Canada...turn up the base.
XM & XP only in the early generation, and they were hardtops too, not post. Then later in the Aus body XA-XC
We never got the 2 door post. Not enough market for all the variations. 2 door coupe yes, a slightly weird thing but attractive. We got a van though!
@ the Full Size Ford Galaxie they were based upon, were sold as Fastback and/or Sport-roof? Have the brochure.
she’s a beauty !
do they have 250 ci ? 2 v or 4 v head ?
Not that I'm aware of no. The integral intake manifold strangles these engines sadly. The 300 six had a separate and much improved 2v intake manifold and the after market made a 4V intake for them
Be a nice budget combo 👌
Yeah, the mustang 6 motor and trans is $800 compared to rebuilding the the 170 at $4500 and $2400 to rebuild the 2 speed trans.
Nice resto project!
Yes!! Thanks for watching !!
Wow! My first car was a 63 falcon, got it sans engine, for $75.00. Did that same swap, a 200 mustang engine! Sweet car, great memories!"thanks!!!!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!!
AWESOME vid.....MOPAR 4 EVER.
Cool old falcon
I love the old falcons the Australian xr falcon was perfect my father had a station wagon .
She’s all original underneath. My first car was a 170.
Not fast but hard to kill😁👍😎
Hey Kiwi! That is a "Sixty three-and-a-half" Falcon. Very cool! A few of those went through my father's Ford dealership back in the day! For whatever reason, Ford decided to install the more square roof from the upcoming '64 Falcon onto the good 'ol round Falcon from '60-'63. It was a running change late in the model year. They turned out pretty nice! You have a great idea there with the 200 six and c-4. I would think an 8 inch rear swap would also be needed if you move up to a v-8.
Yes an 8" is really a must have with a V8 The 200 will make for an easy swap 😎👍
Nice car. My dad had a '61 Ford falcon. We took that thing everywhere
They were like the energizer bunny😂 😎👍. Just kept on going
So many possibilities.
Certainly would be a great swap, like you said no race car but a great driver.👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
The old falcon looks like a good car! If you access to Ford Granada/Mercury Monarch you can bolt in disc brakes and larger rear axle. Don't see either in salvage yards very often though... Thank You for the video!
The fact that it's SO original ,
And untamperd with ,
And still structurally fine ,
Hopefully , they'll keep it 💯 stock
And OEM-ish
I guess , you could drop in an
Inline 6 cylinder from a
70s Ford Granada ( 200 - 250 c.i. )
Isn't the Granada six a different model engine. The 200 68 mustang motor is visually the same Not sure about the Granada
@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160
You might be right ✅ on that one
Maybe sticking with the 68 mustang 200 as you described , would be the easiest and cheapest option .
A easy 2 hour job for kiwi to remove the engine!!
Any Falcon is a cool car.
Hard to argue with that !😁😎👍
I find the Falcons and early Fairlanes to be more interesting than Mustangs. Awesome find.
The thing that always amused me about these was the giant Techumseh AC compressor belted to the teeny tiny inline six.
Little Red Falcon 🎵🎵🎵
Exactly what I was thinking. 200 and C4
Seven main bearings too. Just a small amount of attention to the valve pockets, mill the head a bit and she really perks up.
Were the 170's 5 main??
donsmanufactory ... Yes 7 maines and the maine journals were the same as the small block V-8, and probably the rod journals too. A K Miller I think it was used one turbo charged in a Pikes Peak racer.
@@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160 4 main bearings
Good thing they didn't rev.....
the 6 is a smart move.....i'll be watching
Yes sir it can be quite involved in going from a six to and eight or vice versa. All of the items you mentioned are not considered when folks entertain doing these swaps not to mention the time involved. The later model six with the three speed automatic would be the best way to go. There may be some differences but they can be overcome. back when i was in the tool business, I fixed up a v8 engine for my dad's truck which had the 250 c.i. six with the integral intake. (my dad 1977 Chevrolet truck). Well as luck would have it I had a customer from out of town who was looking for another engine for a 62 Chevy II and we sold the engine to him. He told me that everything pretty much swapped over except for the outlet on the exhaust manifold was a little different and he solved that issue. He told me that the car ran like a scalded bat. It originally had the 194 six cylinder engine and going to the 250 six really pepped it up. The engine did not have that many miles on it, my dad was not pleased with the poor gas mileage and I fixed up a .030 over 283 for him. Of course I found another donor truck for all of the things I needed and sure enough after i finished the truck one of my other customers had a 305 engine for sale (complete) that they pulled out of a car as they were building a dirt track car. The engine I fixed up for dad didn't get much better gas mileage but it did have more power to pull his boat ( I should have built him a hot 350 engine). I drive that truck nowadays and it still runs well.
Thanks Billy, sounds like great memories 😎👍
I had a 80 mustang with the 200 6 and C-4 , in 80 it would do a great job keeping up with the 80 small block V-8, 302. Check out the old car magazine tests, they were surprised to see that too.
Interesting!!
Mr. B. Here 🍩☕️👀😎👍 ! Kiwi nice ride with a little it would make a cruiser ! Small V8 or check 6 out and see witch is more cost effective ! Got my vote 👀😎👍🍸
Mr.B. !!!
Not against the swap, just remember to tell the customer if the engine is original numbers to keep it for better resale after.
Fords in that era didn't have numbers matching info on their cars. Best you got was a chassis number and then engine and trans had a year code cast into them so the best you can do is a year correct car.
I had the 200 in a 66, got me better than 20 mpg and scooted fine.
It's a shame the car can't be put back together completely stock but at the same time I can understand the upgrade. Cleaning up and resealing the underside will be a great plus as far as survivability of the car is concerned. No, these were never hot rods but as far as classics are concerned the owner of this one has struck gold!
Yes indeed !!!
I was hoping you were going to keep it as a sux culinder.....Sorry I had to 😆
LOL the ladies like my accent so I'm good with it 😉
In TV production "Part one Part two" are know as "Cliff hangers".
True!! 😁👍😎
Nice old rig.
Cheers mate!!😎👍
So glad to hear that it's getting a period correct 6 cylinder instead of a V8 swap. That car screams cruising, not racing. Hopefully that quarter can be repaired and paint matched to the rest of the car. A good detail and buff, and it's ready for enjoyment. I hope the owner keeps it as stock as possible and enjoys it half as much as I would
I agree !!! This one's a time capsule as opposed to a restomod 😎👍
@ You're going soft Kiwi. I half remember you as modify anything and everything 😆
Hello. Kiwi. A170 with ac? You will have to shut off the ac to drive it up a hill.
Hey bud 😁😎👍
Criscad ... And the windshield wipers were vacuum operated and would barely move going up a hill
@@chriscadman6379 105hp, I don't think you can buy a car today with that little hp 🤔
Post cars be it 2 or 4drs are always quieter and more draft free. Imho. 67 Cutlass, home depot stick on vent foil it's like a bank vault
And stronger too, they don't twist as much!
Nice find, I'd gladly take a little less desirable model with such a strong base to start on
Did you and Tony have a falling out, don't see you all together anymore
A strong base is all important !! Yeah we did....
Shoot looks like it’s got ac they must have been rich back in the day! lol
Fancy like Applebee's 😂👍😎
How does the 3 speed work with the 2 speed shift quadrant indicator?
You may only be able to select 2nd and top if I can't Kiwi a bit mor throw into the shifter ....👍😎
Hi, Mike from NZ. A good Aussia Barra would fit? Keep it a 6 pot but add some power.
I agree 100% A Barra would also fit in my F100 project truck........ 🤔. With a big hair dryer.....
Nice find for the owners. Was it a "find" or a car from the family?
Interesting that a little bird (Falcon) gave birth to a horse. (Mustang). LOL
It was his Dads when his dad was in medical school. His Dad is still here but not in the best of health 😞
Nice car. A 'V8 swap' would be overkill, keeping it a six is makes sense.
this is the same as the XK -XL series falcons in oz, i dont think the 2 door was available here till the XM-XP models. The 60's model falcons in the US had minor trim differences headlight/tailight bezels, instrument cluster.i think all the body shape was the same.
I'm not sure on the letter designations. I do know 63 was the the last year here for the round body falcons. In 64 they went quite angular with flat ish panels.
@@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160 1960 to 1966 was the "rounded" shape falcons here. 67 was the start of the "square" shaped falcons then 1972-78 was a completely different body style.
@Techbitznpcs interesting!! 64-65 falcons here were quite different to the 63's and 66's
XKs had some real issues,, and even then had been strengthed for Aussie conditions. Our Falcons were a good deal better by XP. Far better than US cars.
@ In 64 Aus went in a different direction, keeping 90% of the 60-63 sheetmetal, but new rear quarters with tail lights mounted higher on their own nacelle type things, the XM. Then the XP got new front fenders in 65, before going back to a carbon copy of the 66 US model with the XR
What a GREAT old Falcon! 😃
Did they have the 250 straight six in the US, or is that another Aussie invention, like the 302 Cleveland? 😎🇦🇺🦘
Are you going to open up the 170 just to see what the problem is?
Upgrading to the 200 sounds like a good plan .
Nice car , I would love to find one that sound , even with its problems.
Who left the sticker on the tire?
The owner got tires put on it so it could roll so I guess the tire shop 😁👍😎
@ They should be embarrassed
Didn't Mustang use lots of parts off of the Falcon in the early days?
Yes they did !!!
Falcon was the base fo the Mustang.. 6 cyl cars have different suspension to the V8 cars unfortunatly
Get the 68 drum brake dual circuit master cylinder while you are at it.
Yeah that car sure ain't from Northern Michigan.
My dad had a 67 Falcon that was in about that same shape once, I think that was about 1977, and his was about one of the last ones still around at that time.
you might look into a 70's 250 6cly out of a granada. people just think a 300 6cyl will work BUT they are totaly different and are fore the most part a truck engine
Nice car! Another cheap upgrade would be an inline brake booster, if it doesn’t already have one?👍🏻
Barra candidate, leave the rest as is 😁 2 speed Fordomatic?
I think it's worth a good bit more than 10 grand, what do y'all think ?
Certainly to the owner 😁👍😎
Perhaps buy that wrecked grey notchback Mustang for parts....
That's going to be auctioned off by the insurance company so chances are someone will pay too much for it.
@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160 perhaps an Aussie 6 cylinder cross flow Barra head?
They make the best gassers !
Yes they do !!😁👍😎
But WHY destroy such a great classic?
@@richardcline1337 they did make the best gassers, several decades ago ! We're not losing many classics to that division any more 😉👍😎
Put a Barra in it
Not this car but I know where there's a F150 that needs an engine🤔
$8 to $10k for a Mustang in that condition? In the meantime in Kiwi land, you would be lucky to get something back from $30k!
I think he was little light on that comment to be honest.
Not Chip OR Kiwi!
I'm thinking kiwi can save the engine but it wouldn't be the most economical and $ matching isn't going to help this bird. We had a 64 wagon and I wasn't a fan of burnt legs and Mom's brake heavy cautious driving.
Ahh but got ya there in one piece right 😝👍😎
@@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160 Yeah in 2x the time it normally would take and with motion sickness as a bonus🤮
I would LOVE to score that car from a barn!!
Of course, I would find a rotted out V8 Mustang as a donor and make it a 289 / 4 speed.. but that is what God wants us to do, after all.😊
😂🤣😂. I think you might right there😎👍
