Have you had any issues updating the firmware on your Sony A7IV?
nope. But I have learned to Format the SD card prior to putting it on a SD card.

I have a tried and true philosophy on firmware. If the camera does everything I want; I never update. Ever.
Exactly this firmwire isnt really even worth it in my opinion to risk bricking my camera
The first update crashed, but I didn't change the SD card. I pulled out the battery and inserted it again. The update was resumed. The update was completed.

I had mine brick as well. Problem for me was that Sony didn't include in the instructions that you couldn't have two SD cards in the camera. You need to have only one in Slot 1. If you have a second card in Slot 2, then remove it first before doing the Firmware Update. Sony now knows about this issue and hopefully will update their Instructions with the warning about the second SD Card Slot causing Bricking if a card is inserted into it.
This is why I prefer the update methods for my Blackmagic Cameras as I don't have to worry about that. I plug them in via USB and update via a Computer Software that allows me to see the progress with a progress bar. It's definitely better. I can have my media cards in my Blackmagic Cameras without issue while doing updates. But my Blackmagic Cameras are for professional video, and my Sony is only for stills.
Either way, if my Sony had to be sent in for Sony to do repairs due to the bricking, then I would have gone ahead and shot with my old Canon or the 35mm Film Camera while they repaired the thing. Either way, they need to fix their instructions.

Sony camera used to be updated through software on the computer but it was actually more fiddly than updating via sd card.

Thank you @timbutt2 , mine was bricked and i was watching many videos and reading comments . I did exactly what you did , i had 2 SD cards and removed one SD CARD, reinserted the battery like within 2 mins it got updated.
@@pbrvlogs6842 yeah. Sony needs to make clear in their update instructions to remove the second card before attempting update.
Thanks for sharing Jem. I ran into the same issue when updating to Firmware 2.0. 1st time this happened to me with Sony a7iv firmware updates and it "freaked me out"! Took the battery and memory card out of slot 1, re-downloaded the firmware to a different SD card and it fixed the problem. Thank goodness...no more bricked camera!

I ran into a problem, but it was a quick fix. Great vid explaining the firmware upgrade and the possible problems.
Wanted to leave my own thanks - your solution worked perfectly! Two hours googling until I found your YT video. The key was A. a full battery B. using a different FORMATTED memory card and C. having only one memory card in the camera.

I used an older V30 card that I don’t use anymore and successfully went to 2.0 first try. Did some test photos and videos and everything seems to be working great

Almost exactly the same for me. After 45 minutes I downloaded the file again and put it on another card. Both were Sony branded. Removed the battery and reinserted. A short time later (while chatting with a Sony rep) it finished.

I have an important shoot this week so I will wait, I have heard many others complain about other problems after installing the firmware, like the ISO keeps resetting all the time and or other glitches apparently. Also Monitor + No longer works, I never bought it bc I always got connection problems with it, bummer, seems to be a great app but never worked for me. I would love to just use the tap to focus on the newer app while On a gimbal but will have to try that when I have a week with out a big job. Is the newer app glitchy and stubborn like the last Sony Image app was? My lagged and always lost connections just like Monitor+ Did.

You saved my day, was so depressed with the not turning on issue after fail update to 2.01, tried everything I could find online but your simple solution to put out the battery and restart with a fresh copy of the file on an other SD card worked in less than 5min... big big thanks ! Thank you, i got the same issue right now with my A7iv and firmware 2.0 ! After 30mn i put the power off and red light continue to flash !!!? Like you, i put my battery out, other sd card with firmware 2.0, power on and after 4mn, ouuuwwwwaaa he is recoming to life... just a big panic, and thank youuu sony for my scary today!!!

How did you go installing it? Have any issues?
@@jemlang I used Mac. Had issues in the beginning but I attached a lens then the option appeared on camera. Give that a try.
Went smoothly for me. Just downloaded the file. Renamed it to BODYDATA.dat and transferred to an SD card.
Wanted to check how other people have gone with it considering some people had issues with 2.0. Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience.

I noticed this as well when I first setup my profile. After adding my cameras and lenses to my profile the capacity increased to 25gb.
Interesting. Even with more than one camera you still only get 25gb?

We all beg for firmware updates and when they finally release one it’s A.Pretty crap and B.Kills your camera! Nice one Sony, you’re killing it!
There were rumors there was going to be focus stacking added with this firmware. Fingers crossed they add that in a future update. Played around with that during my review of the A7RV and it is a very cool feature.

had exact same problem, i just deleted the dat file, and re download and used same card. i set a 6min timer also, worked in the end. then i saw your video in the comments from, Jason morris

I'd like your recommendation. There is an a7iii on the marketplace and it's almost new, but it's bricked. The guy used it few times only and while updating it bricket, and he said that it only show black screen.
The price is really good lol, and i'm wondering if it's fixable using this method
It is a bit risky. Updating the A7III is done through a computer rather than the SD card like the A7IV so this method in this video won’t work.
If you’re able to do it there with the owner on a laptop then it might be worth it. Otherwise it might be a dead motherboard which is expensive to replace.

Hey, my a7m4 still on 1.00 firmware, can i just update to 2.00 ? Or i need to update with 1.50 first ?
You will need to update to 1.05 first. Then once you’ve done that you can do 2.0.
Just make sure to delete the file you download for 1.05.
The download screen will ask you if you’ve downloaded 1.05 or not.

Sure are. If you head to the firmware 2.0 page it has that choice there to download the 1.05.

I bought a new a7iv this Monday and saw this v2.00 update.
I have updated it as suggested on Sony website and it just update from 1.00 to 1.05 to 2.00 smoothly. Not sure what happened on your end 🤔

Hi. I just got two of them last week. This all new form me. Until last week I as a d750 guy. So far I love it. It's like they took top part from Nikon, and the bottom from Canon. I immediately changed aperture to the front dial, shutter to the back, I felt like home.

Hello! I just tried to update my Sony a7iv to the newest firmware. I did everything right. I checked that I had version 1.05 installed, that my battery was sufficiently charged, and that I had the right BODYDATA file in the right size on my otherwise empty SD card. After reading the warnings I clicked on execute and my camera went black. Nothing happened since then. No blinking lights no sound no nothing my camera is totally bricked even though I did everything strictly according to the manual on updating your firmware. I already tried the power cycle procedure and I tried inserting different batteries just to be sure. I do not know what to do next... I got this message on the display ”The update file version is incorrect. When I go to version it says that I have version 2.01 but I dont know if I can trust that? Please help me what to do. I don’t know if the suggestion in this video will solve the problem?
It’s sounds like it has worked. Even though it had that error message. If you try the process again does it say that it is already updated?
Maybe try downloading the file again just in case the file corrupted
Thanks for quick reply. I have to try again and see what it says. When your camera bricked, what did it say when you powered you camera again, under version? What version did it say you had? Or was there any message showing?
When I turned it on and it finished it said update completed. The firmware version showed the correct version.

My Sony A7IV bricked I did try what you say but it didn’t workout and got in touch with Sony service by phone in Canada last Saturday and we tried to save it with no success. Now they gave me a list of authorized repair and said they can’t do nothing . I send it to Gentec in Markham near Toronto on Monday and now waiting for the estimate. The one year warranty is finish since the 27 December 2021 and since I paid it with my Visa card I have another year on warranty. So now I am waiting until Monday to contact Visa for more details and waiting for the estimate as well .
Ask me if I will do a update on my camera again ….🤨

@@jemlang Hello again , so finally it’s costing me $902.70 Canadian to replace the mother board .
I have tried asking Sony to pay the material and would pay the rest but nothing to do …because it’s out of the warranty…and for the credit card nothing to do also because I have send the camera before asking them and also that it doesn’t cover any updates done on the camera .
So make sure you are still on your warranty before performing any updates of your firmware.
Ask me if I will make any updates again…👆🤬

Its not available in Panama City? You might be able to download it from the US Sony page or maybe another country.

Exactly the same experience. On the second attempt, it correctly updated. BUT WAIT!! the next day the a7iv was again bricked.

Same here I called Sony up and the guy said that’s how Sony updates there camera so even when u put the battery back in the update won’t reset. I had to take out the sd card wipe it download a new file then insert it in the camera and the camera updated. It’s so weird that the camera becomes inoperable and u can’t reset it either way.
Also Sony recommends format the sd card in camera not computer it’s weird but I freaked out as well I use my a74 for portraits and I have a shoot this weekend I thought I was screwed😅

After watching this vid and read some of the comments I’ve decided not to do the upgrade. The camera does everything I need and I don’t think the upgrade would make the camera much better.
Have you guys noticed some improvements improvements with the latest update?
I’ve done one shoot with it since updating and haven’t noticed a difference with general use. Taking it out again for another shoot shortly. Will report back if notice anything.
The Creators’ App does seem easier to use. I rarely used IEM. But did use Creators’ to transfer an image after my shoot to do a quick Lightroom edit and it did fail once when transferring a raw image. Tried again and it worked.

Hello everyone…be very careful before performing any updates on the SONY A7IV the firmware!
This update firmware from 1.10 to 2.0 broke my Sony A7IV , Sony service and support Canada tried with me by phone to bring it to life with no success and gave me a list of authorized repair dealers to have it repaired at my cost , it’s out of warranty since the 27 of December 2021 and now it’s costing me $902,70 Canadian to have it repaired, ( have to change the "Mother Board " ) Sony says they can’t do nothing for me .

Hey Serge, really sorry to hear of your bad experience with updating your camera. This is the 3rd time I've come across this type of thing happening.
If it was me I would reach out to a local Sony rep and try escalating it through the chain up with Sony to try and get them to cover it. If you aren't able to find your Sony rep maybe reach out to the store you bought it from and ask them to put you in touch. And my advice, don't take NO for an answer.

Maybe try downloading the file again from the Sony website in case it got corrupted.

Pretty sure devices of this class can’t be bricked, if the firmware update fails it just reverts back to old firmware.
