Building dugout survival shelter - Bushcraft log roof, sandbags | ww2 style

  • I build a small dugout house in the woods with dead wood roof and sand bags filled with sand and stone, raised bushcraft bed and cooking firepit. I spend the night alone in ww2 clothing and cook rations that would have been similar to those used in ww2.

This style of shelter was often used in WW2. Soldiers needed to make cover fast with limited tools. Many didn’t even have a roof to them because there wouldn’t have been enough time. If it rained, they got wet, that was just the way it was. I added a small roof to mine. Halfway through the video you will see I am wearing real WW2 trench coat, helmet and belt. I wanted to experience what it would have been like for soldiers to make these, and it was not easy. My aim isn't to be "historically accurate". But more to experience what it may have been like to build one of these, whilst wearing and using some of the items that would have been worn back then. Hope you enjoy the video and you can watch more videos like this here: th-cam.com/play/PLxnadpeGdTxCjzM8ijvkW02wly3O7YUl4.html

The way I see it, ignore any complaints of “historical accuracy “ that overlook the clarity and lack of sepia tone of your Digital video camera.
I have an idea for a future project if you are interested. When I was very young our scout group was camping and met a veteran of the First World War whose entire cooking and eating equipment was three large soup ladles and simple Jack knife

My Uncle (one of the band of brothers) fought in WWII, during the Siege of Bastogne in December 1944 between American and German forces at the Belgian town of Bastogne, as part of the larger Battle of the Bulge. He tells (told) the stories of this battle, having to build this type of shelter, where he fought from. The weather was brutal. This shelter, along with excellent marksman skills and true grit, saved his life and the life of others.
Thank you for this great video. Thankfully you didn't dig into large boulders and tree roots. 🌳

Thanks! It's just experimental mixed with some re-enactment to be honest. It was hard work and trying to constantly film and change angles sucked. But couldn't imagine doing this whilst living in a constant state of fear from the enemy.

I normally am enthralled by your videos. This one is oddly.... Spooky. I think because we all have family that either went through WWI or WWII or some other campaigns, and know full well this is probably all the protection these men had. Then had to abandon them, hurry up to the next position, and start all over again. At this time of year, it makes you truly appreciate what those men fought, suffered and sacrificed for. Great video!

The difference between an observation post or a listening post or a fighting hole. Remember the grenade sump. I still have an entrenching tool my grandfather replaced the handle in the 1970s. I did a lot of digging in clay back then and joined the army in the meantime. A hell of a lot of work for just one night, but you learn to dig as your life may depend on it. Laziness can kill you.

Nice shelter. You can't beat being underground for insulation in the winter and the coolness during the summer. It would not be fun in it if rainwater pooled inside, but your bedding should be high enough to keep you out of the puddle. And the roof would keep a lot of the water from getting in.

I would love to build one of those to survive but with deer, bear, mountain lion, raccoon, possum and other creatures with a little good weight to them, I would have to do it a bit differently. Deer will walk on and jump atop everything. They are extremely heavy and would literally cause a cave-in or breakage. Still, it was fun to see WWII in action. Thanks much.
