it was a bummer to know that you had to photoshop that beautiful piece that was inspired by studio ghibli; it's really a shame that anime art is frowned upon in the classic art world especially considering how much time and effort was obviously put into that piece!! it's super upsetting but there isn't much that can be done, it's sort of why I'm sort of scared of art schools since I fear they'll stomp the style that I admire so much out of me but congratulations on getting in though, you really did deserve it and good luck this year!!
Well there are schools that are actually okay with that! I think mica, scad, and even calarts might like it more because they're more focused on illustration and animation but do ur research! I don't know everything
According to jordan from the school portfolio critique, he said that the figures seem very similar like eyes shape and hair colour etc. Also, while i see the techniques are really beautiful, i cant help but feel that composition wise, it's a little cliche.
The dislike for anime had me genuinely shook and hurt. I don't understand. It's literally another form of art, one that has inspired a plethora of people to start drawing. It's literally my only reason to be interested in art. The style is so breathtaking and the stories told as well! Those people disgust me for making you feel the need to take out the characters. Hey hey! I understand your frustration - - I've been there. In defense for the people who told me to remove the characters I know they were just looking out for me because the institutions traditionally don't like it. However, I understand why not. It's not to say anime art is bad because omg I love Makoto shinkai. However, there are so many art styles and potentials out there that if you start your whole career drawing anime art, you may not develop your own voice. I think a lot of these institutions want to see more you, rather than a style adopted somewhere else. Hope that makes sense 💕💕 keep making art
@@VictoriaJunmei Well it's a different story if they were just looking out for what they think institutions may or may not like. It really depends on the person and what they wanna do with their art. I've watched a lot of accepted art portfolio videos and this is honestly my favorite - there's so much creativity in your work! congrats on your acceptance, you definitely deserve it!!
I honestly panicked when you mentioned in your description that you didn't take AP classes along with your GPA and extracurricular activity. There's always a pressure on students and almost an obligation to take as much as you can for the best result -- at least in the U.S. I hope you're doing well in RISD, and I hope to develop a portfolio as lovely as yours!
Haha ya idk I'm in Canada so like ap classes are way more optional but I did try very hard in all the required aspects so I guess that sufficed. Good luck you'll do amazing things!!
i realized you do a LOT of satire stuff HHAHAHA i love it!!! the chinese one i feel that too lmao my family doesnt want me to pursue art school so i did other stuff for a while & dropped out in my final semester bc i only had 0.7 cgpa (i couldnt keep up & caught depression because of all kinds of issues). now im doing design as i wished & my cgpa is waaay higher now as im focusing solely on what i like. also for the studio ghibli looking one :( if for my case i would just keep it as is. i would like to show how im able to draw cartoony/anime styles to other expressive styles!
AHHH I wish art schools were that nice about anime art. Perhaps they would've let me but I didn't want to risk it. I'm glad you're in a happier place now, and that you're being your authentic self
You are a very talented young lady. You must not put yourself down so much I think all your work is amazing. There's nothing wrong with your life drawings you are young, imagine how good you will be when you are old lol. You say you don't like drawing from photos and I laughed. I used to try and draw my horse when she was eating out of her bucket, it was impossible she was never still :) All the best for you future art career.
Thank you so much! And ya I probably sounded too negative but I definitely love my artwork. I was trying to be self aware that's all. Thank you for ur wishes!
i really enjoyed watching this! I wanna thank you for the tips and inspirations, as i am applying for a couple art institutes this year, although our portofolio t&c are VERY different lmao what even @ my country Anyway, this is both educational(?) and relaxing! kudos to ya
I'm sooo happy! I wish you all the luck. In my room tour video I gave portfolio tips and ideas so if you're still in need of extra advice or inspo, hope you'll check it out! Regardless good luck!
@@VictoriaJunmei @@VictoriaJunmei thank you!! oh sureee, I'll definitely check it out when i have the time!:) uhm i just want to say *thank you* again for the tips. as ive got accepted into the art institute ive been dreaming of, a few days ago! anyway, best wishes for your life and career. thanks again
I used acrylic paint! I don't think there's much technique other than working from background to foreground. If u pick a specific painting I can explain u my process?
this was so helpful and i really love the ideas behind every piece! also, i was wondering where you get your canvases like the ones in the pieces “by fair means or foul” and “mother’s reassurance”
I'm glad this helped you hehe!! Anyway, by fair means or Foul was actually an enlarged print out that I used for an art show. The original is actually smaller on watercolor paper (Gouache on watercolor paper). For my mom, it was canvas board (acrylic on canvas board)
You know, all I draw is anime, fantasy and semi realism. When I applied for uni I have to submit a portfolio of 10-15 original works. The one think that broke my heart is that anime is frowned upon along with Ethereal/fantasy, surreal, etc. And that's what I've been drawing my whole life. I have to submit artworks now and I don't know what to submit!!! I've never tried realism which shows I have many weak points and a limited variety of art styles I can do and I'm stressing over this... What do I do???
Oh my goodness I'm so sorry I didn't reply sooner. I hope this still helps but honestly art schools aren't seeing if you have perfect realism rendering. Submit realism anyway even if it's not perfect and maybe they'll see potential and actually accept ur application based on ur potential. Don't give up!!
i'm auditioning for a highschool and my major is going to be visual arts. they want me to do all this realistic stuff and i've never done it before. i'm scared i won't get accepted because of my lack of skill.
omg sorry for late reply i hope everything went well! regardless of whether or not u get in, it shouldn't hinder you from continuing to pursue your craft and building ur unique style. Good luck!
i want to apply to these school but my portfolio isnt as good i dont have many mediums i work with pastel acrylics and watercolour idk what other mediums to work with i want to have variety but i feel like im not going to get in
Don't be discouraged! I suggest trying more black and white tonal mediums that can show your ability to work with range. There are many kinds of variety: variety in medium, subject matter, meaning, size etc. So do anything and everything!
@@VictoriaJunmei Thank you for actually seeing my comment🤣 Mhmm just draw your favorite motif with your favorite supplies while explaining how you draw it (and how you became such an amazing artist ^^).

I remember in studio art 1 this girl who went to pratt told me that I had so much potential and I should apply to RISD after she saw some of my doodles. Now I’m binging portfolio videos and realizing ha I can’t do this :D
I felt the same way! I watched sooo many portfolio videos and actually I became motivated because I felt these people were so amazing that if I really want to get into the school I'm gonna have to try super hard. I didn't expect to get in, but I did expect I'd try my best. So what I'm trying to say is ahahaha You can try!! No matter what! Good luck 💕
Did you end up sharing your essay? I’m not in art school I actually work in healthcare but I love art and I think it would be really interesting to read! You’re very talented btw :)
No I didn't end up sharing it!! It's not that well written but I did put a lot of heart into the topic. Here it is lol: Four summers ago I discovered that a majority of clothing I buy is manufactured by kids working for a few nickels a day. Since then, I’ve taken steps to buy brands that are ethically responsible and made an effort to reduce clothing purchases. Although it wasn’t a solution to end child labor, I felt better knowing I wasn’t contributing to this injustice. However, that self-congratulatory feeling soon faded as, once again, I realized my lifestyle still supported people's suffering. Earlier this spring, my philosophy class viewed a heartbreaking video of kids and adults from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Poorly fed workers work all day in hand-dug mines without proper attire or safety equipment. Kids as young as four work every day of the week, rain or shine, sifting rock after rock with their bare hands and feet in search of one metal: cobalt. Cobalt is an important mineral used to create lithium batteries found in cell phones used today. However, cobalt is a conflict mineral, meaning it’s largely mined in war-torn areas (in this case, the DRC) and then sold to prolong existing hostilities. Trade of conflict minerals has funded some of the world’s most brutal conflicts and terrorist groups. The phone that many of us hold today is a sign that we perpetuate fighting, unethical work environments, and of course, child labor. Despite the problem being literally in the palm of my hands, I can’t bring myself to make the sacrifice to solve it. As an average seventeen-year old managing friendships, extracurricular activities, and four social media accounts, my phone is my life support (I’m only kind of joking). Everyone around me, including my grandma, uses their device regularly. In developed countries, where most people don’t have to worry about the necessities of life, many will find comfort in a cell phone. The video prompted a heated class discussion that led to no plausible resolution as everyone fundamentally did not want to give up their lifestyle-including me. I’ve tried justifying my actions by telling myself that because these kids in the DRC have no other job than to find cobalt, I’d put them out of jobs by never buying phones again. I’ve convinced myself I’m doing them a favor by continuing to allow this exploitation. By telling myself comforting lies, I remain complacent and content. The class discussion basically got swept under the rug; we wanted to forget the problem out of our own frustration and self-doubt in our abilities to make changes. This shows how people in the first world need cognitive dissonance to maintain sanity whilst knowing their comfortable standards are detrimental to others. In other words, ignorance really is bliss. This new school year, the whole morality issue behind cell phones resurfaced when I was looking for a new phone, prompting me to search for the most ethical manufacturers. I pulled up a list from The Ethical Company Organisation and was shocked to see how the most ethical phone brands are the least popular. Blackberry has an impressive ethical company index of 91, which is thirty-one points higher than the iPhone; however, I’m pretty sure the Blackberry doesn’t get the rave the iPhone has. The list gave me some insight as to what measures to take in reducing child labor. First, someone needs to raise awareness that the popular phone companies are perpetuating severe human rights violations. I acknowledge it’s unrealistic to free everyone in the DRC from mine-work or to change the habits of every die-hard Samsung or Apple user; however, the companies themselves need to be heavily pressured into enforcing ethical production processes. Therefore, with a limited voice, I’m inspired to search for ways to reach and influence these companies to take a closer look at their practices. Hopefully, it’ll bring some justice to those who risk their lives every minute so we can be on our phones every moment.
OH MY GOODNESS I ACCIDENTALLY REMOVED UR REPLY BUT I READ IT I absolutely agree that we don't talk about these things enough because it makes us question ourselves as bad people. For now unless we know how to source resources ethically, we can only be more aware of how often we buy devices and to pressure companies to be more socially responsible. Also, congratulationa that your iPhone 8 still works today haha!
Victoria Junmei i LOVED IT , honestly it was probably one of my happiest moment in life, I’ve never felt so home before, I made lots off friends, and I still talk to them as if we split up yesterday (even though it was a year ago). I wanted to sign up for illustration major at first, but since I wasn’t good at painting at all, I decided to challenge myself and out of my comfort zone, so I signed up for painting major, oil painting. It was a great experience.
@@VictoriaJunmei precollege experience was such a impact on me, I miss everything about RISD, I miss the restaurants, especially the Ramen place, and the huge mall in downtown, they have the biggest movie theater.
did you go to unionville high's art program? i wanted to go so badly but because of my location i wasnt able to :( i auditioned for huron and got in but then my parents didnt let me go lol
Your art is so amazing and inspiring! And you sound so sweet. (probably heard that a million times but it's really true). But anyways do you have any tips for starting drawing? Like what to start with and how and when to branch out to different styles and genres? And like any tips of what to use? Because I'm 12 almost 13 and I really want to learn art and eventually go to art school! But for now I've only been drawing like cartoon faces and I want to branch out. 💕
Thank u so much!!! I go in depth about this in my Q and A video. In the future I might make a separate video. Anyway, I highly recommend starting anatomical drawings like right now. Do a ton of figure drawings (don't draw from other drawings-- must draw from photo) and time urself! It will suck at first but that's the type of hand eye coordination you need. Once u feel you've grasped time a bit better and ur going faster, search around ur area for open gallery nights or something where live nude models (I recommend a mature mind for this.. Like at least 14-15 years old) and you can draw from life. Drawing from live applies to everything. In the future when u want to have a more animated cartoon style, you must start with basics-- learn the rules before u break them! Feel free to keep asking questions
your portfolio is amazing!! i really want to start applying for art schools next year but i’m really nervous because i’ve only been studying art for about a year and even though my friends and family will tell me i’m really good at it i know i’m not good enough to get accepted. do you have any advice for how to improve over the course of a year?
I talk about this more in my room tour video but yes there are exercises to improve. The best one is to DRAW FROM LIFE and to practice hand eye coordination. Check out my Q&A video..ill give u a timestamp
Well many of my pieces here are prints mounted on foam board but usually I buy pre stretched canvases from art stores and I sometimes use canvas boards. I would love to give the brand (Curry's) but it's Canadian so idk if u can find it
I just take photos with my phone and a digital camera and edit with Snapseed. Each drawings ranges... Most time spent was on 3 paintings at the end. Each was like 70 hours spanning 1 month
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh wHy cAnT I bE tHiS gOoD. Your art is amazing. If you don’t mind me asking why didn’t you go to art school in Canada? Like ocad or something?
I wanted to leave the country and explore further. Risd has a more well rounded experience for art and I love their campus. It's really personal preference, so it's not to say one is better than the other. I love the dynamic of American art schools that's all!
aww :( We all feel this way about another artist it's actually crazy. I can't convince u to not think that way of ur art (cuz frankly i can't convince myself either) but whether or not u make it to some art schooL DOES NOT DETERMINE YOUR SKILL, TALENT, ORRRR hard work so good luck!!! u got this :)
in art, a prompt is basically a starting point or an idea. For example, a prompt of an artwork could be: Paint something using only inverted colours. It doesn't tell you exactly what you need to do, but there's a frame. They can be even more vague and just be one word like the RISD assignment as just "verify" or "forge" or "error". you get what i mean?

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'm happy you love it
Wow this is one of the best portfolios I’ve seen ever I love it so much,.I’d like to go to RISD myself in the future and your portfolio really inspires me I hope to have a portfolio as good as yours some day💕💕💕
Also I see that you have a great sense in music taste 👌😤

Victoria Junmei thank you sm and no problem😉
Just subscribed, you are so wholesome and have such a wonderful heart and it shows!Love you, can't wait to see you grow as an artist!💜

honestly dk how i kept forgetting to watch this video but, all your art work is amazing! Good luck this year :)
THANK U KAT I'M SO GLAD U WATCHED IT HEHE
This video was actually insane, sugoiii
THANK YOU >\\\
your art is soo good not boring, omggg
HUGGGGEEE THANK YOU
I really like your artwork, especially the Submission piece with the jellyfish. Would look great as a print. Hope you'll make more videos about your art journey ;)
I actually made a shirt from it so making prints is honestly a wonderful idea!!
Such a killer portfolio!!
I've watched a lot of accepted art portfolio videos and this is honestly my favorite - there's so much creativity in your work! congrats on your acceptance, you definitely deserve it!!
That really means so much to me! Other artists r super talented too. Hope we inspire u!!
Good luck you'll do amazing things!!
omg you're so talented! all those arts amaze me! :D
I'm so happy to hear thank u!!
i realized you do a LOT of satire stuff HHAHAHA i love it!!! the chinese one i feel that too lmao my family doesnt want me to pursue art school so i did other stuff for a while & dropped out in my final semester bc i only had 0.7 cgpa (i couldnt keep up & caught depression because of all kinds of issues). now im doing design as i wished & my cgpa is waaay higher now as im focusing solely on what i like. also for the studio ghibli looking one :( if for my case i would just keep it as is. i would like to show how im able to draw cartoony/anime styles to other expressive styles!
AHHH I wish art schools were that nice about anime art. Perhaps they would've let me but I didn't want to risk it. I'm glad you're in a happier place now, and that you're being your authentic self
i love the editing 😩
AHHH THANKS FOR NOTICING IT TOOK FOREVER
You are a very talented young lady. You must not put yourself down so much I think all your work is amazing. There's nothing wrong with your life drawings you are young, imagine how good you will be when you are old lol. You say you don't like drawing from photos and I laughed. I used to try and draw my horse when she was eating out of her bucket, it was impossible she was never still :) All the best for you future art career.
Thank you so much! And ya I probably sounded too negative but I definitely love my artwork. I was trying to be self aware that's all. Thank you for ur wishes!
I love it!! The self portrait reminds me of Yatora’s self portait from Blue Period
i really enjoyed watching this! I wanna thank you for the tips and inspirations, as i am applying for a couple art institutes this year, although our portofolio t&c are VERY different lmao what even @ my country
Anyway, this is both educational(?) and relaxing! kudos to ya
I'm sooo happy! I wish you all the luck. In my room tour video I gave portfolio tips and ideas so if you're still in need of extra advice or inspo, hope you'll check it out! Regardless good luck!
@@VictoriaJunmei @@VictoriaJunmei thank you!! oh sureee, I'll definitely check it out when i have the time!:)
uhm i just want to say *thank you* again for the tips. as ive got accepted into the art institute ive been dreaming of, a few days ago!
anyway, best wishes for your life and career. thanks again
How did u make the anxiety ones?? What technique??
I used acrylic paint! I don't think there's much technique other than working from background to foreground. If u pick a specific painting I can explain u my process?
Victoria Junmei the one with the jellyfish, they look so good!
this is such a nice video! you're work is so amazing and it's really inspired me! ^o^
I'm so happy to hear! I would love to see what u make
Am I the only one who remember her work from an art prof review?..Amazing work btw!!
Yes! There was an art prof crit from Jordan!!
this was so helpful and i really love the ideas behind every piece! also, i was wondering where you get your canvases like the ones in the pieces “by fair means or foul” and “mother’s reassurance”
I'm glad this helped you hehe!! Anyway, by fair means or Foul was actually an enlarged print out that I used for an art show. The original is actually smaller on watercolor paper (Gouache on watercolor paper). For my mom, it was canvas board (acrylic on canvas board)
Congrats!! I wish I could go to RISD unfortunately I'm from Europe and have no chance to get a scholarship
Thank u! And ya it's a really huge bummer risd doesn't give financial aid or scholarships to international students
You are so nice and beautiful, it's like light within you🌞 And your works are really intresting and creative, thank you for sharing💙
And thank you for watching!
You’re seem really sweet and humble, your artwork is so cool 🍀 (my English is bad sorry)
I understand u perfectly! Thank u
you're so talented and pretty 😍💌
That's a wonderful combination to be hehe thanks!!
You have a really solid portfolio!! don’t call your work boring. They’re all beautiful and you should be proud of them❤️
Thank u!! I definitely don't think the pieces are bad, and I love them like my kids AHAH just feel they could be better 😏
Victoria Junmei I feel that. They could always be better😊 but I’m glad you love them lol.
Amazing video btw, never knew you could do so much with art
Haha! IKR? And to imagine that there's so much more creative possibilies in this universe that we haven't discovered yet 🤯🤯
This really helped me put together my freshman year portfolio!! thanks ❤
Wow your portfolio looks amazing😍👌
Thank u!
I love your works, it's amazing!
Thank you!
You are amazing artist :)
I am applying to colleges these days and I wish I was as good as you
Good luck!!!
@@artprof Thank you so much :)
I'm sure you have skills I could only dream of having so keep going! I believe in u
@@VictoriaJunmei Thank you for your sincere comment :)
This is gorgeous omg
i'm auditioning for a highschool and my major is going to be visual arts. they want me to do all this realistic stuff and i've never done it before. i'm scared i won't get accepted because of my lack of skill.
omg sorry for late reply i hope everything went well! regardless of whether or not u get in, it shouldn't hinder you from continuing to pursue your craft and building ur unique style. Good luck!
you are amazing
Excuse me how did I not know you had a youtube channel!!
HEY KAT YES I DOOO LEMME SUB TO U
victoria you’re so pretty!
No u omg
i want to apply to these school but my portfolio isnt as good i dont have many mediums i work with pastel acrylics and watercolour idk what other mediums to work with i want to have variety but i feel like im not going to get in
Don't be discouraged! I suggest trying more black and white tonal mediums that can show your ability to work with range.
There are many kinds of variety: variety in medium, subject matter, meaning, size etc. So do anything and everything!
Victoria Junmei Thank you so much!! this makes me feel better about everything in trying my best 🥺💕💪🏼
@@appasue that's what I love to hear! Wish u the best

Woahhhhh These are really beautiful!!!
Would you consider to make an tutorial or an Video about you drawing?
Yes I would! I will take any video ideas. What about art exactly do u want me to make a tutorial on?
@@VictoriaJunmei Thank you for actually seeing my comment🤣 Mhmm just draw your favorite motif with your favorite supplies while explaining how you draw it (and how you became such an amazing artist ^^).

Love it girl !!
Thank you hun!!
Good luck 💕
Really love your work!!!!
Hope my course transfer portfolio can be accepted this time😭

Haha maybe u should do another bts song for the next video?
Hi Victoria!!! I deadass watched this before we were friends❤️❤️
AWWWWW I don't think this depicts me as accurately. Do u hate irl me more or utube famous me more 🤪
Did you end up sharing your essay? I’m not in art school I actually work in healthcare but I love art and I think it would be really interesting to read! You’re very talented btw :)
No I didn't end up sharing it!! It's not that well written but I did put a lot of heart into the topic. Here it is lol:
Four summers ago I discovered that a majority of clothing I buy is manufactured by kids working for a few nickels a day.
OH MY GOODNESS I ACCIDENTALLY REMOVED UR REPLY BUT I READ IT
I absolutely agree that we don't talk about these things enough because it makes us question ourselves as bad people. For now unless we know how to source resources ethically, we can only be more aware of how often we buy devices and to pressure companies to be more socially responsible. Also, congratulationa that your iPhone 8 still works today haha!
Victoria Junmei my reply is not deleted :) yes.. iPhone 8 going strong but most likely converting to blackberry because of this :)
@@sodaswirls blackberry is actually pretty good lol I'm using a Huawei but I'm suspicious of it
Wow, its amazing

Omg I also went to RISD pre college, but 2019 summer.
did u enjoy it? and for what major?
Victoria Junmei i LOVED IT , honestly it was probably one of my happiest moment in life, I’ve never felt so home before, I made lots off friends, and I still talk to them as if we split up yesterday (even though it was a year ago). I wanted to sign up for illustration major at first, but since I wasn’t good at painting at all, I decided to challenge myself and out of my comfort zone, so I signed up for painting major, oil painting. It was a great experience.
@@Julia_diary1 do u plan on coming back?
@@VictoriaJunmei of course!!! I feel like I belonged there, and 10 of my friends already got into RISD !! even the people I admire goes there!

Hi! Did u write explanations for ur paintings as well?
did you go to unionville high's art program? i wanted to go so badly but because of my location i wasnt able to :( i auditioned for huron and got in but then my parents didnt let me go lol
Yes I was in arts Unionville and graduated 2019. I'm so sorry ur parents didn't let u go to Huron but don't let that discourage u!!

They don't really like anime unfortunately because anime is very structured and they and they want u to make ur own style, not copy
Damn. Looking at this I realize how much my art sucks. I’ll never get into art school 😂
aww :( We all feel this way about another artist it's actually crazy. I can't convince u to not think that way of ur art (cuz frankly i can't convince myself either) but whether or not u make it to some art schooL DOES NOT DETERMINE YOUR SKILL, TALENT, ORRRR hard work so good luck!!! u got this :)

what’s a prompt
in art, a prompt is basically a starting point or an idea. For example, a prompt of an artwork could be: Paint something using only inverted colours. It doesn't tell you exactly what you need to do, but there's a frame. They can be even more vague and just be one word like the RISD assignment as just "verify" or "forge" or "error". you get what i mean?
Victoria Junmei ooo ok tyy
