As a european art student, i am shocked at what RISD expects from applying students. I mean, you still need to be able to learn _something_ in that school, right? They basically require you to be a professional artist even before applying. It seems completely crazy to me.
People usually go for the fancy titles and recognition (also to learn ofc but that’s mainly what you get out of it). They only accept you because they want to claim they helped cultivate a prolific artist. :(
i think its more that its extremely competitive. the profs at risd probably want good artists but since they have a very small capacity (~1000 students total) theyre looking for the best of the best yk?
as bad as this sounds its honestly kinda refreshing seeing people getting rejected from risd? i just got rejected and it’s pretty hard dealing but all of these schools are amazing :’) congrats ! hope its been treating you well
I'm so scared to even start my portfolio. I wanna apply to universities in berlin, hamburg and kiel (german cities) and I know I have the technical skills "needed" etc but i'm scared that they just straight up reject me and don't like what i'm creating and you can only apply 2 times max at most art schools in germany. I'm already 2 years late because of corona and mental illnesses and I feel so much pressure it's almost unbearable ahhh (Sorry for oversharing💀)
I totally relate with you but not in Germany. I’m also 2 years late bc of corona, I’m also planning to apply for an art course this year but haven’t started with my portfolio :/// I have some plans but no actions yet. Really overwhelming and nerve-wracking honestly
did you apply for the uni ? which uni did you applied to? cause i am also planning to apply to uni in germany but tooo scared to even start my portfolio.
For the Skelton phone thing you could have said (my interpretation at least) That when you die people you are texting or who follow you on social media something our phones have us wired to in life have no way of knowing if your alive or not thus in the modern day death is just permanently leaving someone on read. Or something. Because I often think of how if I suddenly died nobody would know and probably just spam text me unknowingly
Hello! Your portfolio pieces all look amazing! CMU design is honestly my dream program and I'm planning to apply this year. Is it possible if you can maybe share your gpa, so I know kind of what stats they are looking for? Thank you!
Hi Sophia. You're amazingly talented, if you didn't knock every admissions committees socks off I would be surprised. At such an advanced level, it would be helpful to know what your journey was --- where did you study? How long have you been pursuing Art at an advanced level/ Was there tutoring and special programs involved? Were you recognized at some early point as being exceptional? Where you considered at the top of your class? Not that I expect an answer :) Wow, what a portfolio!
There are countless videos about applying to and getting into art schools. I have two degrees from top schools. Back when I applied, of course we did not even have videos to guide us. Anyway I think the more important question is: WHY do we want to go to art school? I'm not sure anyone has made a serious study following the lives of art school graduates. But my suspicion is that an overwhelming percentage of them (maybe 85 to 95%?) end up in careers or lives that have nothing to do with art. Art can be one of the least rewarding (financially speaking!) career lines out there. I believe that most applicants chose this direction because when they were young it seemed fun, and would appear to save them from buckling down and really hitting the books in a demanding and highly competitive course of academic study. In my case, I do not regret pursuing non-commercial art, but it was not an easy path.
Hiii I really liked your works and thanks for making this video! Did you have to turn in a 90 second self-introduction video for CMU last year? I'm applying this year and I have no idea on how to make that right now TAT
Yes this year I got $100000 scholarship from Pratt Architecture five year program and got rejected from RISD... I mean... No need to worry, just f**k it :))
You are incredibly skilled at arts! I must say, that the meaning behind the pieces can be deeper and more idk, like those are good pieces but the meaning can be fleshed out a little more? The impact is what was lost on me (could just be me, please do take it with a grain of salt) or a lack of a unique way of presenting the repetitive ideas. You have certainly a lot of potential, and you're a heck better artist than me. Top art colleges just want kids who are already pretty developed in all areas, so might be why RISD rejected it.
I feel like you weren't accepted by risd is not because they didn't like or appreciate your work but because you chose design but your portfolio consists of more artworks (which are beautiful btw) than design work. That, and compared to your complexity of art, the design works seemed a bit too minimal. Just an opinion though, I love your art!

What paper did you use to make your portfolio? :>
Whats Carnegie like ?
ucsd可以不交portfolio吗
Hi what did you apply for in CMU?
小姐姐~你申请的是RD吧?我听说risd20年的RD特别难,比ed难很多。
因为我觉得很意外你居然会被拒。。。你做的好好
也申了ed被deferred了😭
