right now is a perfect time to make a lot of new work if thats what you need! I remember most of my pieces were ones I made specifically for my portfolio because I wasn't happy with a lot of my older work, the most important thing is to send work youre proud of and that feels like yourself, good luck :)
your work is just marvelous！The composition and colors are great～and your small animation is also really interesting！I have just submitted my application for RISD ED，and I has one small question，Did you include process documentation in your portfolio～？I hear from some people that RISD loves that but I did not include any， will that be a problem～？
Thank you! When I was applying I think they specifically asked for some process documentation photos just for RISD, and I only put in a few (kind of just sketches photo-collaged with the finished pieces). But if they no longer mention that when submitting you're probably all good, and it's just a nice thing to have but I'm sure it wont count against you if you don't have it. Best of luck!
I did a precollege program at CCA! I fell in love with their Oakland campus! I worked really hard on my portfolio the summer before senior year, and during the beginning of senior year, but I also worked on it a fair amount junior year. One key thing is to go to any National Portfolio day events near you! They helped me a lot in figuring out what schools were looking for, and how to rework my portfolio. The people there are there to help you (for free! Haha) and can be a great resource
Hi! I currently go to CCA (about to be a Junior) and I definitely have some advice. In general, with any art school, GET as many scholarships as you can (from the school and outside of it, like bold.org or otherwise). In terms of being at cca, I’d recommend transferring as many credits as you can to make it easier on yourself (I for example transferred my precollege credit from Otis, would’ve with AAU too but AAU didn’t say I was allowed to? Idk long story. And then I also transferred my AP art class, which DEFINITELY take! It’s key for making that portfolio and a bonus with transferring it). Otherwise, some Gen Ed classes (math/science, philosophy, etc), although I haven’t done this, I would recommend doing at a community college. It’s much cheaper and should be able to transfer easily. Dorm wise, I was in blattner freshman year (which I believe now they turned into only upperclassmen) and it isn’t built that well if I’m honest. It isn’t bad at all and it’s pretty spacious considering traditional dorms, but some things weren’t put in correctly (ex: one of the bathroom doors was broken for 3 months so it wasn’t ideal haha). I’m about to be in founders this fall so I can tell you my experience there (the 5th floor is upperclassmen and the rest is for students likes you). Otherwise, I know the first 2 years require the dorm, but when you can, try to gather people for an apartment and see what’s cheaper. My high school portfolio btw took about a semester and a half (the AP class I was in had us make a breadth, which was half of one semester, and then the concentration, the main theme, the rest of the academic year). I have a question tho, do we have to digitally scan our pieces or can we just use a dslr to take a picture? ‘Cause some of my pieces are too big
I heard you can take pictures even if it’s just with your iPhone but you have to crop it so there is no border
And be sure the lighting in the picture is natural. Artificial lighting can ruin the color.
I used a dslr, and iPhone photos are good if you use bright, even, natural light. I didn't scan any!
