Hi Bill & Lisa:
I was excited to see your Shakey’s Pizza video. But this is so different from the original Shakey’s in Hawaii. The main 2 locations on Oahu in the 60’s-70’s (they closed sometime in the 80’s) were on Ke’eamoku (couple doors away from Like Like Drive-in) just a few blocks away from Ala Moana Shopping Center. The other along-side of Kamehameha Hwy, generally across from Anna Millers, Pearlridge. Back then it was almost a community center; very family-style. Families big and small would go to Shakey’s any night of the week. It was affordable, filling and tasted home made. Their claim to fame was the entryway. They had a long glass window looking into the open kitchen. Pizza makers in an assembly line, tossing dough, spreading sauce and making the orders for those already there, sitting at the long picnic benches in family style. Multiple families and dining groups/dates all at several longggg tables (Hofbrau style). You’d place your (whole) pizza order at the stand then they’d give you a # and you’d find a bench/shared table until your order # was called. They didn’t sell buffet, nor by the slice. Only whole pizzas and made to order. They didn’t yet have pineapple as a topping option. This was the 60’s/70’s. No fried chicken nor French fries on the menu. It was Pizza. No garlic knots or garlic bread. Just pizza, beer (in steins) and sodas. That it. No veggies or salads, no desserts. Just Pizza. That’s why we went to Shakey’s Pizza, for the Pizza. Super simple operation, very few options on the menu and they were the best at what they offered. The kids loved standing on the benches along the window looking into the kitchen. Parents enjoyed a break while the kids stayed as of glued to the window entertained by the pizza making assembly line. There was live entertainment usually on weekend nights, a Dixie band, wearing red/white striped collared shirts and always a banjo player in the band. During the day a lot of birthday party groups. Shakey’s was the anytime, any occasion, place to go. Their pizza was incredible. Not the fancy artisan pizzas or elaborate topping combinations such as CPK. It was just right and they kept it super simple. Cheese, pep, sausage, black olives and mushrooms were the choice of toppings. If only to go back in time and get an original Shakey’s simple and perfect pizza pie. Thank you for your videos and taking us along for the ride. You 2 are so special.
Thank you for sharing! We'll pin this comment so others can read about the old Shakey's Pizza Parlor experience.
Outstanding post. I forgot about the glass front kitchen area. It was the best tasting pizza of the era.
@@billandlisa You 2 should give SUSHI ISLAND a try in Gardena. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the combo D. 20 pc. of nigiri, and 2 eight pc. rolls. for 45 bucks! owned by a nice japanese family.
Your description of Shakeys is what I remember of Artesia Shakeys in the mid 70s. It was also very dark inside. They also had good root beer.
Wow…memories 🥰🫶🏻🤙🏼
Shakey's mojos and chicken were excellent! When we worked there back in the 70s my favorite pizza was he Canadian ham, onions, black peppers and pineapple....try it!! Wish they were back in Wisconsin!!
Hey Lisa!!!!! Hey Bill !!!!! ❤ 😊
Hello Daniel!
WOW!! Guys you’re taking me back to the day!! Haven’t seen a Shakey’s in ages!! What a great selection on the lunch buffet, something for everyone! Chicken looked great as did the thin crust loaded with veggies 🍕 And ambrosia!!! Thank you so much for the memories guys 👱♀️🌺💯
Nice to reminisce the good old days at Shakey's in the 70's and with the kids in the 90's. Many of the Skakey's have closed.
Wonderful video! My buddies and I would ten-speed to Shakey's, circa 1972 Orange, CA and feast on the $1.99 Bunch-a-Lunch. On weekends it was the Hansa House Buffet in the Orange Mall for $2. Oh to be 14 again and to be able to process all those calories.
Those were the days!
I used to go to Shakey‘s after the football games in high school we used to hang out and eat. It was so much fun and that was 1986. Wow I sure do miss Shakeys…
Great video I remember Shakeys in Illinois this brings back memories of my childhood. Love the chicken and pizza.
Shakey's is one of my favorites especially the bunch o' lunch buffet. The location you went to has a much larger selection than the one by me. I think ours is half that size. I absolutely love that fried chicken and mojos! Great video! Thanks for sharing and stay dry this week!
I was waiting for a Shakeys review !!!
I remember the piano player in the 60s! Great memories!
This reminds me of when I was traveling across country to my job in the Midwest. There was a place called Pizza Ranch that was AYCE. It had amazing chicken and coleslaw JUST like KFC. We ate there every lunch. I was in the best shape of my life--six pack abs--and by the end of that leisurely drive, I was chonky...
Thank you for this reminder about Shakey's! I used to live close to the one on the Miracle Mile. Now, I'm closest to the one in Culver City. Since I'm always on the hunt for some great fried chicken, I'll be stopping by at Shakey's sometime next week!
Also, My favorite pizza is Hawaiian with fresh, chopped garlic added. I absolutely love pineapple on pizza!
Wow, what a trip down memory lane! I ate there, one upon a time in a land far, far away. ❤
We loved Shakey's lunch im Sacramento. Thanks for sharing the memories
Our pleasure!
Glad to see there are still some Shakey’s around. When I was a kid, our local Shakey’s had a banjo player and you could order anchovies on your pizza!
I live right behind this same Shakey's, once a week I am there eating all the good food.
Wow. Shakey's Pizza. Haven't been to one since I was a kid.
Shakey’s back in the day used to be so good. Then, after years of being on top, something changed in the quality of their pizza. The next thing you know, the business just went downhill. Here I am looking at this video and the pizza doesn’t look remotely like it did when it was at its prime. Such a shame, but it’s still cool to reflect back on those nostalgic memories from time to time! 😊
Can you say yum I'm a little older than you two I live in Georgia we had them when we were younger looks great ❤
Chicken, JoJos, "pepperoni sausage and jalapeno pizza" are my favorites :)
OMG, I remember when I moved to San Clemente, (SoCal) in late 1971, there was a great old fashioned style Shakey's. I still crave the MoJo Potatoes!!!!! Wish Carson wasn't so far away or I'd be there in a heartbeat! My mouth is watering, Melaney from SoCal
My parents used to take us to Shakey’s back in the 60’s…it was the best. Their bunch of lunch was always my favorite. Next time I am in Southern California I’m going to make sure we eat there. Great video😀
I also remember the fried chicken being very good from there!!! Fun times
An earthquake in my city rudely interrupted me watching your video!😂
The dinosaurs used to interrupt the banjo player when Bill was a kid...🤣
I have a Shakey's within walking distance in my neighborhood. I haven't been for awhile, but they used to serve dessert pizzas like smores pizza and apple glazed pizza.
These old places are disappearing little by little. 2 local Sizzlers closed down, Long John Silvers closed and Pizza Hut doesn't do restaurant dining anymore.
I wonder how Shakey's or Sizzler would do in Vegas, since most of the buffets have shut down?!?
Another great video B & L!
Great questions! That's what we were missing, dessert pizzas. lol
Thanks kido's - Shakey's and their pizza, chicken and mojo's RULE ! Had this dozens of times as I grew up and it's great to know they have lots of 'parlor's still around in CA as well as a few in WA. Many thanks for bringing back those great memories.... m.
Our pleasure!
Looks like fun. havnt been to a shakey's since i was a kid
I loved their pizzas as a kid. Now i want to try it again, but we have none in my area. Thanks for reviewing this again.
Shakeys is pretty underrated. Its not the best pizza but a lot of their stuff are decent enough for me to come back.
When we went to Shakey's Pizza in the early 70's in Rochester, N.Y., I THINK they only had pizza. I may have been too distracted by my 2 year old daughter running up and down the picnic-style tables causing us to leave early to notice other foods being offered!! I do remember that they had live banjo- playing music. I can ALMOST CONJURE -UP the LUSCIOUS smell of the pizza. We were very disappointed when it closed its doors!
Love you two. You are so lovely.
Thanks for the wonderful memories. It has been years since I've indulged. I have one just down the street from me and as I drive by I always think I should go back and try it again. Now I might try it out again,
Whooooooooooooaaaa delish!!!
Shakey’s bunch o lunch is the best! There aren’t many around, but I’m lucky enough to have a couple that are in areas that I frequent. Their pizza crust has always been my favorite because it’s thin and crispy, and their chix and mojo’s can’t be beat! Each buffet is a little different as to their offerings in the hot bar. That salad bar in the Carson one is the largest I’ve seen. I’ve never been to the Carson one. Maybe next time I’m in or around the Carson area I’ll stop in. Thanks for the review!
When I was a little girl, they had one in Dallas, Tex. When we went to Disneyland in 2019, we found a shakey’s and it was memory lane for sure
I love shakeys! 😍😍
We had Shakey's here in Colorado back in the 1970's and 80's. I remember watching the guy play the banjo on the weekends. It was way cool!
Wow you guys! It looked better than ever. It all looked great! ❤
Great video 😊
Aloha Howzit goin you guys🤙Hi Bill&lisa🏝 yessah I love love Shakeys pizza parlor😋 supah great prices! see yall on da next one guys💕🤙
Howzit! Thanks for watching!
We had 2 here n Pensacola 30 yrs ago ,they were so much fun ,It was a player piano I remember, the food was delicious & the potatoes were called wagon wheels, looks like the same potato 😂,wish it was still here
I grew up with Shakeys, and nowadays if I'm in So Cal my go-to locations are in Alhambra or Monterey Park. Can't beat their lunch buffet, and yes, the chicken is really good!
OMG, all our Shakeys in Iowa closed in the 80s. we all miss it sooooo much! I forgot there were still a few around.
Shaker’s was where I spent almost every birthday as a kid in Bethesda, MD… hasn’t been one here in ages!
Used to go to there too. East-West Highway.
@@melewig1860 that’s the one!
I grew up in So Cal. My dad loved Shakey's so we went there often. I live in Reno now. We had one here but it closed. The franchisee got permission to continue using Shakey's recipes so we still get our Shakey's fix when we need one! Thanks for the walk down memory lane! 🥰
PS - no pineapple on pizza for me. 🍕
Thanks Bill an Lisa! Thanks for going to Shakeys’. We wouldn’t have been interested in going if not for you. And thanks for trying everything out and critiquing for us. Great reviews!
Our pleasure!
Haven't been to a Shakey's Pizza since I was in my teens and I am 60+ now. We no longer have a Shakey's where I live in Missouri 😥 The food looked great. Thanks for sharing this video. 🥰
Hi Bill and Lisa! 🙋♀️
So glad you guys hit Shakey's! I rarely get a pizza there (MOD is my go-to for pizza these days). But Shakey's has always been my fave place to get take-out chicken! And yes... Everything is super-fresh!
We still have a Shakey’s too, and as a teen I ate Bunch O Lunch often. I don’t think I could do it now, though. Thanks for the memories!
No flop is a good sign in my book 👏😋❤️🍕
We had a Shaky’s in a town close to where I grew up used to eat the heck out of those mojos. If I remember correctly, our Shaky’s used to show silent movies, & there was a self playing piano. Don’t quote me on it though bc that was maaaaany years ago 😀
Lisa has a really warm smile 😊
Wow! My Family used to go to Shakeys in Calumet City, IL back in the 80's! If that one was too crowded, 😅 we'd head to the one a few minutes away in Highland, Indiana on Indianapolis Blvd. Nothing but Great memories of that place! We
Went there countless times! 😅
Oh wow that takes me back! I can almost taste the Ol’ Shakey’s pizza. I remember it having a cornmeal dusty texture bottom. Ours never had the buffet or it was gone before Shakey’s Buffet started, but we loved a good pizza from them. I really miss it.
Thanks Bill and Lisa for bringing back some good memories!
Sadly, not too many left and not widespread anymore. Thanks S!
I remember hearing pin ball machines in the background back in the day. Awesome memories. TY.
Yes Salad Bar. Salad so Delicious 😋 ❤
Enjoyed the Vlog! I miss Shakey's, We dont have them here. Quick note.. Me n Eds pizza on Paramount and Carson had the banjo and piano players doing the old timey stuff also.. They may still do! They are a Lakewood staple.
Yes, we’ve been to the Me n Ed’s in Lakewood many times and remember Big Al on the piano.
As a proud member of Gen-X, I have fond memories of family nights out at Shakey’s, when they use to have sawdust on the floor and the self playing piano. Their pizza sauce has not changed and is still delicious!
I went to Cal State Northridge for mechanical engineering full time and worked full time. I would catch up on eating once a week on a day that I didn't have to work after classes at the Shakey's just up the street. It's incredible how much you can eat if you're in starvation mode.
Shakeys was my 4th grade basketball sponsor in 1987! Good memories. They still have the same one by my childhood home back in Seattle
Thanks for sharing 🎉❤
No problem 😊
Used to go for lunch at the one in Monterey Park a few decades ago. The food was pretty good. The servers would even walk around the tables with trays of fresh hot pizza to serve.
Another great throw back video!!! I remember going to shakeys back in the 80s on torrance Blvd in torrance!!!😊😊😊 the fried chicken still looked as it did in the 80s !!!! Haven't been there since the 90s!!!! Might have to go back❤❤❤ glad you guys really enjoyed it😊
Oh wow! I remember that one on Torrance Blvd. Good times!
Look, I'm not saying Shakey's is top tier pizza, but back in my middle school, there was a Shakey's kiosk that would come every week on Friday and they would sell whole pizzas for $10. My friends and I would always pool our money together and split a whole pizza every Friday. Even now when I go to Shakey's I'm always brought back to middle school. So I'm always going to be fond of Shakey's.
You two are so fun, and are always on lots of adventures! Thanks for taking us along. 😊
I'm glad to see Shakey's is continuing to do a good job.
I'm usually skittish of buffet's but we had Shakey's in Iowa and never left disappointed (or hungry!).
Thanks for the well produced video!
Great buffet review !! that chicken 🐓 looked amazing!! Great price for all you can eat buffet !! Have a great week !! 👍👍❤❤🤗🤗 🍕🍕🐓🐓🥰🥰
Thank you! You too!
Hi Bill and Lisa! Memories. The Shakey’s in Santa Monica closed many years ago. Culver’s City is inconvenient so I haven’t been in a long time. I remember some of my “Pro Tips” from my days. First that’s normal thin and thick pies, just the way they have been. I saw a modified fave of mine Chorizo and Jalapeño, your had a third topping, not an issue. I don’t think you tried that one, units them especially good on the thin crust. The salad bar is as I remember it, large. My fave tip, take a bunch of the Mojos and put a ladle of pasta sauce (I liked the marinara) on top and they softened a bit and took on the flavor and the blend was delightful to me. Dipped in ketchup works to but that sauce, yum. To keep the crunch dip in that sauce not pour. Fun video!
Joe
Great tip on the mojo and pasta sauce, Joe! Thanks for sharing!
I remember shakys back when I lived in California . So good.
Wow, I remember Shakey’s when I was a kid. They left Texas years ago. I remember they had a dance floor in Pasadena Texas with a live band. The smell was amazing. Awesome video guys 👍😎😻🎉
I haven’t thought about Shakey’s for decades! Thanks for the memories!
Any time!
Wow chicken included is awesome! Thanks for showing this and keep up the good videos!
Shakeys was my first job when I was 16 back in Washington state. However that location closed in the late 90s.
All the food looked wonderful. I've heard of Shakey's but living in the Great Lakes area we do not have one. But if we ever get back to California, we'll definitely look one up. Thanx for sharing. Safe travels.
I used to have a Shakeys close to home but never went to their lunch. I've actually only been there 2 times in my life.
Anyway, always enjoy your vids. ❤
Shakeys rocks. While I was in The Army we went to lunch there alot.
I miss Shakey’s, we used to go there all the time when I was a kid but now they don’t have any locations on the East Coast.
My parents took us to shakey's all the time in the early 1970's, my husband took me and my kids every other week in the 1990 good times. I like the chicken and mojos. When we come down from Northern California we eat there, It's like visiting an old friend.
What a great episode! Love you guys! I eat pizza almost every day 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
You Two are crushing these local spots.....honestly I thought Shakeys was gone....My friend and I were just talking about it....I used to go to the one in Culver City...Thanks guys!
I went as a child in the mid 70's. They always played little rascal and 3 stooges tv shows. Sometimes they would have a guy playing the piano. I'm not a big fan of thin crust pizza, but I always liked there's, as simple as it was.
Shakey's is my childhood!!! Thanks for bringing back a part of me!!! So wish they had them in Florida, they were all over Indiana/Illinois when I used to visit them frequently! Since Kevin and I are always in Vegas, they should open one there :) Positive vibes to you Bill and Lisa, hope to run into you all again in Vegas soon!
No pinnapple on pizza for me. But i know many seem to love it. The sound of the crunch bitting into the chicken was awesome. I am glad it was good! And what a good value price!
Surprisingly good fried chicken!
The original Shakey's is from Sacramento, California; my hometown. Started by Sacramentan Shakey Johnson and Ed Plummer in 1954, they are no longer open in Sacramento. It's still very popular in the Philippines.
My favorite childhood specialty pizza they used to make was Mexican Pizza and of course combination. My family used to go out for dinner at least twice a month. Brings me back full of fun and happy memories. In the 80’s I was ten years old..❤️❤️😍
OMG I love Shakeys! However no where near them! The mojo potatoes!
I am definitely a pineapple person & I love Shakey's! We like to hit up the one In San Gabriel, near our house.
Mmm looks delicious. I wonder if all Shakeys have same variety of food.
Aww what good memories. We had a shakeys here in MN like 50 years ago when I was a kid. Also I used to love that ambrosia salad that was pistachio it was green. 😄
I’m speechless 😋🍽
Hi! Love your videos, Also like ve pineapple on pizza and Shakeys. Haven’t been there in a while, Great video
Thank you!
Love it!! Mojo's!! Lance worked there as a teenager....Too funny! 🤣
Didn’t know that! lol
I didn't know there were any Shakeys left of course I left Cali when i was 20 I think and that was 54(geez) years ago.
Hey Bill and Lisa, that Shakey's Pizza Parlor looks amazing!! Unfortunately there's no Shakey's up here in No. Cal except in Oroville (far from San Jose) Thanks for sharing your Shakey's adventure. Live life guys!!
Thanks Debbie!
Love shakers. There are some in southern califormia that I go to.
Great vid. This is the first pizza I remember eating out as a kid in Fresno, Ca. It was a Me n Ed's combo and it was great. A wonderful food mem for me. Never tried their buffet, but want to now! Thanks. Karla in Cali.
Shakey's, Round Table Pizza, here on O'ahu are long missed. Life goes on.
Missed you again guys 😉!…haven’t been to Shakeys’s . I will be going after seeing your video!…Thanks guys !
Shakeys look better than the pizza hut buffet! The chicken looked juicy and crunchy! See ya on the next one!!
Good to know!
