Actually, the fold-back futons might work if you mounted drawer slides onto the base so that it pulls out. It would depend on the construction of the futon base as to whether it could be modified to fit/work.

Fantastic. My idea for a caravan one day is to have a sitting room where I can chill during the day and then with moving one or two pieces, change it to a bed. I just find, for me anyway, that a permanent bed is such a waste of space...I'd prefer a space where I can chill with friends like a regular lounge and then at bedtime, change it up and put it back in the morn...awesome, thanks for the info :-)

I did a build out for my daughters Pro Master City. For the bed I bought a good quality 28 x 80 inch luan door( not the one that has a fibre honeycomb one) I also bought 4 short table legs with the metal screw in bracket . On the door rail there is a solid 2 1/2 inch rail around the outer edges you can screw the brackets into. I made these so the distance underneath is 11 1/2 inches so the standard 11 inch bins will fit underneath. On either end I cut 1/2 inch plywood panels 28 wide x 36 inches high to make the bed ends and screwed these into the rail headers. This gives you enough for 5 -- 26" x 17" bins underneath. I used the collapsible fold up bins because they are very square and give you the most space as compared to the clear storage bins that have rounded corners and big lips on the top. My bins fit so snug I do not need bungee cords to hold them from sliding out.

I am working on building out a van i am on the early stages and am planing alot of different ideas like a 4 way convertible bed it is a 6' long in the largest mode, It can be 3' wide going side to side of the van of the bed and a 2 person seating eating mainly for day to day stealth camping mode), the bed will for a U shape table that can seat 7 or fold from the center to do a 3 by 5 open to the roof, or a 2 by 10 running threw the whole van. under the 2 person seating will be on one side a portable toilet and the other a 3 by 2 Asian soaking tub / shower pan when mostly only using the soaking when connected to a water source.

The trouble is "futon" has become a synonym for sofa bed. About 30 years ago, a futon was a traditional Japanese mattress made of layers of kapok. They were great for people who like a hard mattress. The simplest ones came with a couple of wooden pallets to help you make the bed into some kind of couch. Personally, I'm not impressed with the foam mattresses available from IKEA and I hope to find a traditional Japanese six-layer futon when I put together my van build.

As far as what I've seen a pre-made futon is still gonna take up a minimum of 3 to 4" on each end and 6 to 8" - not to mention the extra inches for the arm rest - is needed inside the van/camper and I could stuff something in that space I could stuff many things in that space...
If I had the room... oh , heck yeah! it would keep me from having to build it! And sew.. and cut dense grade foam.

Since you have to cut down the mattress to fit , you probably have a hard time keeping your too-large sheets fitting neatly.. you can use a pair of suspenders, I would say a medium or large would stretch far enough to go the width/breadth - anyway from sheetside to sheetside and be adjustable, so just simply use them to pull the edges of the sheet together under the matress like garters for ladies' hose, they pull the hose to the adjustable garter and close the gap and stretch and keep taut the hose so there aren't wrinkles, bags and sags.

The flip-flop designs you're showing around 0:44 (Ikea Balkarp) they do work quite well for a van conversion! Keep in mind that on my case I add to cut and weld the frame to my convenience! That do add work and complexity to the project. But the end result can be quite satisfactory. As a bed it worked perfectly and it's rather cheap! ;-)
Although after the second trip I totally reconfigured my van and got rid of the flip bed/sofa. ;-)

Great vid. I'm all about the IKEA for van builds because I'm not a carpenter. The reason I rejected ready made sofa beds is that they mostly don't accommodate the wheel well, so that $500 sofa ends up with a big hole cut into the back. [Sad face]

The Friheten goes from a single bed, at least for me since I am a side sleeper, to a small double bed ("Guests" ahem). The only problem is that with all the "xtra" that comes with the furniture, storage space is small compared to a custom design.
I got 2 questions regarding the Minnesund
    1) Is the 4 incher thick enough for a 205 lb side sleeper?
    2) What are the dimensions of the interior height of the van where the bed is placed, the floor to the top of the bed mattress and your height for reference? Thanks.
I currently sleep on a 20 inch wide mat while hiking or while car camping, I don't need the extra space as a side sleeper, so I could make some space in the minivan.

One thing i see lacking in every van build is the lack of a nice/sitting couch area where you can just chill and relax on a regular sized couch without being cramped up on some little compromised space saving seat or having to sit on a fixed bed all the time. My current van has a fixed bed raised up at the back like nearly every other build with a "garage" underneath. My rebuild will have a regular sized couch either one that already converts to a bed or i am just getting a nice corner couch and just getting an extra bit of foam my self i can add and turn it into a bed a night.

If your doing semi van life or weekend warrior And still need your truck/van for hauling and other things And want a cheap but strong way to have a bed which is quickly removable without lifting heavy items ...My plan is to Get a iron/steel angle iron bed frame Cut it into 3 or 4 inch size pieces Drill holes in each piece for pins weld it to the frame of the truck inside Buy square aluminum tubing Drill same size hole for pins Place the tubes on each bed frame Place a thin foldable (hinges) wood board on top and unroll some Memory foam ...Done Just make sure you have the welds on the frame of the van or truck and you have more then 3 or 4 sets to support your weight plus extra
The bonus is that you can remove it quickly or use it as extra use without the foam there If you drill out a few slots or holes in the base wood You can run a portable >electric< heater under the bed Making sure there is a nothing close by that would burn This i would have on low ..Now you have heat under you and rising above you from the bed ends

I like the style of the Tarva frame. If you have the space and don't need to have a convertible couch-bed, then it seems like a good option.

I'm from Sweden and Swedes know IKEA. Even if you as a Swede have never bought anything at IKEA there's a 99% chance you still have something from there. What's also certain is that their furniture is crap. I would never put IKEA furniture in my RV. It's eventually gonna break or fall apart from the shaking, bumps, and vibrations because of the cheap particle board and wood they use.
I prefer to buy second hand furniture of a better construction because at least then I would've spent much less on something that may just hold up a bit longer than anything from IKEA. Even if you find something second hand from IKEA that's 30 years old it'll still be a better construction than the stuff they sell today.

Personally, I want the holy grail (at least my holy grail): a bed you can put away without unmaking and making it twice a day. Because I'm a lazy son of a b... that means either Murphy bed or a more esoteric design that gets lifted into the ceiling. Realistically, the Murphy bed seems like the most likely option; just pick up enough 8020 t-slot aluminium and bolt a frame together and arrange for a frame against the side of the van to hold it and boom. I guess we'll see how that works out... Also, in a van it's probably important to think about moisture under the mattress. A Hypervent mat that lifts the mattress off the surface and allows air circulation would help prevent mold. Or, the deluxe option, a Froli sleep system. Plastic "box springs" that both raise the mattress off the surface and give better comfort and... well... springiness.

    • @zhkopec
      @zhkopec  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Same. It's a big hassle to make it every day but space is so vital. I saw a box truck with a lift up bed using pullies and that was pretty neat. At around 13:00 th-cam.com/video/i7rNDhmEGOc/w-d-xo.html

@@zhkopec yeah I've seen a few DIY variants. Another guy (I forget the TH-cam link) did it in a high-top van too. But in a low-top the idea is of course completely out. In a Transit high-top you could do it, if you put a couch or something underneath (as you'd lose a fair bit of standing room underneath there). But a Murphy bed is simpler. There are several examples; Jarrod Tocci had one van on his channel recently where he had a Murphy bed, and you can see it on some RV's too. The Leisure Travel Van Wonder with the Murphy bed option is amazing, but of course that's both taller and wider than a van.

Kopec, interesting video thanks :) we have a L1 H1 mercedes sprinter so not a lot of space. We are thinking about the ASARUM from Ikea, i have it in an apartment and the only thing i don't like as a couch is there is no padding on the back but it does come with 3 big cushions. As a couch it pretty comfortable and not a lot of space needed at the back to close. Very easy mechanism to open. th-cam.com/video/gHh0Y8eClQ0/w-d-xo.html. We will raise it a bit so we can store more underneath.
