For the last 15 years I have both a sailboat (Allied 36 Ketch) and a powerboat (33' 1936 wooden raised deck cruiser). I just sold the powerboat and am now a one boat owner. When I had both boats i used them to take advantage of the weather. On windless days, I took the powerboat out. I also took the powerboat out on days when I just wanted to get there. When the wind was blowing I took the sailboat out generally with no particular destination in mind. For example, yesterday it was hot (80F), so we took the sailboat out past the islands into the gulf of Maine where it is always cool in summer. I decided to put the powerboat up for sale last summer because now that I am in my 70s the maintenance was getting to be a bit much. I didn't expect it to sell quickly, but the right guy saw the listing and the boat sold in just over six months. Since I mentioned age, I have to say that as I get older I find that a powerboat makes more and more sense simply because power boating is less physically demanding. Now that 80 is sneaking up on me, I find that even simple things on the sailboat take planning and that I hurt after doing them. I love sailing and have been sailing since I was 5 years old, but I am sure that within the next 2-3 years I will sell the sailboat and buy another powerboat (fiberglass this time) to finish out my boating life. The end of my time on the water is a reality that I am now facing and that we all have to face someday. All I can say is that I hope I make it to 80 years on the water and that I enjoy being on the water no matter how I get out there.
Wow that’s amazing! How incredible, experiencing that, definitely hard work though! Personally I just love anything to do with the sea, I would be happy with whatever kind of vessel! My parents are a similar age to you, and just switched from yacht sailing to motoring, and definitely, without a doubt are enjoying it. I think the biggest change is how it moves in the water, in reference to the waves, and of course the fuel, but they are loving less maintenance and more ease, the comfort etc., and of course when the weather is cold, still being able to go out. I really really, really hope that you get to enjoy the sea far past 80, even if your centenarian years!
Must be fun living up in Maine and thinking 80* is hot (only if you're measuring in Celsius). I live in the Utah desert where earlier this month it was 117*, this week it's dropped down into the chilly 90's because of daily thunderstorms but the usual temps from June 1st to sometime in Sept is over 100*, and single digit humidity, which is sort of a good thing except it dries you and you skin out fast.
I think all lovers of the sea find it hard to walk away from her. As demanding, dangerous, tempestuous, alluring as she can be, we love her and feel lost without her. If we can’t sail on her as sailors, we’ll do it as passengers. For she holds us to her bosom even in our old age
Pat’s blog was my escape over a decade ago as I was working as a air traffic controller. I would try and read a blog entry or two every break. I learned to sail in the 90s on a little Laser dinghy sailboat. I loved to push them as far as I could and often ended up swimming around standing on the keel and pulling back upright. Now that is a workout! The thing is when you learn to sail on a little boat like that, you can learn so much about your limits and how far you can push it before you are in trouble. All you must do is push it too far and must right it again! Yachties are always telling me I will make a great sailor on a yacht, because I started out way back when on little dinghy size Lasers. They always tell me I am bringing more to the table than most people who buy yachts and decide to sail them around the world.

I sailed dinghys in my teens and loved it. I've never been on the ocean on a sial boat, it's a dream. (I live inland) But I'm thinking of getting back into dinghy sailing with kids. Hoping the skills are transferable. 😁

15 GPH per side for 10 knots for the trawler versus 1 GPH to do 7 knots for the sailboat. At $4/gallon it's $12/nm for the trawler versus $0.57/nm for the sailboat and the sailboat isn't much slower. And half the time you can sail the sailboat. At $12/nm, even 100nms ie FLD to Nassau starts to get expensive. Plus, who wants to listen to an engine all day long.
I could be tempted by a power boat. 2 Problems, the cockpit on a mid 40's catamaran is vastly superior to any power boat's cockpits or flybridge (similar in size/price). Most power boats are just too loud inside to imagine cruising for 8-10-12 hours. When I get to that point, maybe I'll just sell the mast and sails on a sailing cat and use it as a trawler, or just leave them be.
The older you get, the nicer the powerboat becomes. There is much to be said for both and each has its advantages and disadvantages so in the end, which suits your needs best is the right choice.
This boat is so sick!!! I love it when they find clever ways of manufacturing space by having two heads but sharing the shower. The wife and I started out wanting a sail boat, but have since started considering a power boat. We’ll see
Great Conversation! I totally agree that one should ask- "what is your mission?" and then buy a boat type accordingly. A nice follow up vid would be on a way more fuel efficient- full displacement trawler like a Nordhavn or Bering. If you don't mind seeing the world at 6-8kts, maybe a good option. Cheers

The dark side is tempting. Good episode... I have always been curious if the amount of motoring is underrepresented in sailing vlogs. Sounds like the answer is at least a little.
A lot. Our sail cruising involves getting into anchorages 60-70 miles apart in 12 hours daylight. Sometimes you have to be there because coral reefs in the dark are no place to sail. So motor it is.
Knowing how people (me) think, I can see the thought train, "How much money/income/etc. would I have to have to just Jump Ship to the power yacht world?" Life isn't about what you accrue, it's about what you ENJOY! A suggestion to owners of powerboats: a pre-oiler that fills the bearings with oil pressure just prior to starting it can cut down on a lot of the wear that engines experience. A diesel engine that experiences little in the way of starting and stopping, but just runs will last a higher number of hours than one that has to be started and stopped cold multiple times per 10 hours, and the pre-oilers available mitigate that to some extent.

Theres also a salvaged Dazcat that was dismasted and converted into a high/speed efficiency. And the Cornish yard that built it converted it to a long range passage maker. Capt Q's sidekick Randay bought a lovely monohull that has a sunken shower bath in it.😉😎 The other option is a future development of the Silent Yatchs with a kite sail ... Or a wing sail.

And I wonder what Patrick would of a cat with a full canopy of solar. Silent, odorless, low maintenance, and can power all the other systems. I found your channel just a couple of days ago and watched maybe 5 episodes. During the last episode, I wanted to urge you to look at a Nordhavn. We had a new Jeanneau 36i sailboat from 2007 to 2018 in San Diego. I had dreams of going to distant shores and doing the single-handed transpac, but work always got in the way. Now we are waiting on our new Nordhavn and.... warm cozy cabin, protected from the wind and rain, no heeling, eat and drink without spilling, fuel efficient, long range trawler, heater, AC, washer & dryer, lithium, starlink, etc. Just as your guest said, you end up motoring the sailboat a lot of the time, wait longer for the right amount of wind from the right direction, zig zag longer distances instead of taking the direct route, and are living in cramped quarters looking out through small portholes. If you want to experience the fun of sailing, carry along a Hobie with amas and a sail.
Know your feeling. Grew up with my dad and mom's 60 footer power boat and we traveled everywhere f from NE Canada to the Chesapeake and most of the inlets along the way. I was doing my 4 hour watch at 9 years old. When I became an adult and developed income, I bought a sail boat and sailed From Canada to Nantucket and everywhere indeterminate for 18 years. Now rhea we are older m we are moving to a power catamaran. The ones we are lookingat will cruise atb8 k n it's and can go 2900 km on one fillup, yet can pump up to 18 knots to get around weather or make a destination. 😊
One wrench that you didn't throw into the mix is solar/electric power cat... Something such as Silent Yachts? Maybe out of the price range you were talking about but that concept provides the simplicity of power boats with the operating cost of sailboats. I know that there is a huge upfront cost but think in the coming years that will continue to come down. Right now, that technology only makes sense with a luxury yacht price point. But the concept I think is a great merger of the convenience, cost and capability you were talking about towards the end of your video. They can traverse oceans and do so with very little fuel... comparable to the amount of fuel needed to sail across oceans.

There are quite a few cat manufacturers making solar powered cats. I would really like your take on pure solar catamarans. One guy turned his sail cat into a pure solar cat by removing the mast and rigging then built a roof over most of the boat and installed solar panels. It uses no gas or diesel he claims it can go 100 miles a day and still keep the batteries charged at 10 to 12 knots Low running cost. Low maintenance Quiet running Lithium and Tesla motors. High start up cost. But not as high as $1000 an hour for fuel.

I'm so glad you made a video like this.. I've been pondering the benefits of a 45ft sailboat or a same size trawler with more room because I don't plan on moving long distances and the extra fuel usage doesn't matter as much if you're only travelling maybe 2000nm a year when you weigh it up with the cost of maintaining rigging and sails it doesn't seem too bad but the extra space and layout seem like a major benefit.. love sailing, I really do.. but I'm really on the fence on the two. A big motor yacht using $800 fuel an hour is obviously not in that equation 😅 Now, I still need to watch the video. Curious to see the points made.. wish me luck to coming closer to an answer! 😁🍻
Buy the trawler. More space and comfort, less hassle, and you can do 7 or 8 knots all day in a straight line. Unless you want to do a 2000 mile passage get your sailing fix on someone else's yacht. I went to the dark side and I've got no regrets, except for the odd fuel bill 😥 but I don't have to buy new sails and rigging either.
Okay, so not sure if I came too much closer to my conclusion.. I am definitely leaning more in the trawler direction, but I feel like sailing may be an adventure I want now while I'm still younger and then settle into the convenience of a trawler later on when life needs to mellow out a bit! Would still love to see you guys speaking to more people about the trawler life if you come across any on your travels. And thanks Stephen for your input, that's definitely helpful to know I wasn't just imagining the convenience of it.. I've worked on trawlers and always thought they'd make amazing live aboards!
You can eliminate fuel cost with dynamos and Edison generators with inverters and to power high torque electric motors and screw pump jet s. You have an unlimited range electric power yacht propulsion system without fuel or pollution.

In 2018, I purchased new sails for my 50 sailboat. Main + Genoa + furling Code Zero + running rigging was over $20k. Those who think that wind is a "free" fuel source are delusional.
My advice is go do a sailing course at your local club - most clubs have a range of boats suitable for different ages and skills. Once you get past the intial fear of falling in or tipping over (yeah everyone has it) and you get to the stage of being able to lie down in a hull (or have a friendly skipper aka Nick) and just let the wind do the work, it is pure magic. You don't need some high performance, go fast, vessel to enjoy life - life is a journey not a destination, some of the best sails I have ever had have been in light winds with a wine, good friends and good conversation, for my adrenalin rush I go racing, not as fast as cars but no brakes in a pack of boats with 1/4T at ramming speed is exciting enough.

One interesting idea I have seen recently is taking a high end sailing cat and then converting it to parallel hybrid electric. I am against electric cars but I think electric can make sense on a sailing yacht because it can be used for short distances and thrusters. With the advantage of still having a diesel engine if needed.
Very enlightening. But frankly it says the obvious if you do the math in decision making. There really is such a thing, but it is not used. Only a hardened true math geek would know. LOL. You actually create a decision profile for each decision maker so that the perditions reflect the values of the decision maker. Here is a little secret to math in decision making. Divide the domain of interest. Cost to fuel. Total costs include sail costs and time cost (there is such a thing), learning costs, Which includes likely mistakes made with each type of sailing, and amortization costs. You need to keep luxury level approximately constant. Then the conversation of how big it the bath tub becomes relevant. The Caribbean is a small bath tub comparted to the Pacific. Estimate hours to destinations and thus fuel burned . I loved this conversation. Thank you. More math please.
It wasn't until you showed that copy of "Live on the Margin" that I realized that you co-authored that book with Patrick Schulte. I used to love following their adventures on their Catamaran. Can't help but comment on the DDG 100 USS KIDD, shown in your video. This 9300 ton Aegis destroyer is powered by four LM2500 gas turbines that can move this surface combatant at 30+ knots. USS KIDD was built by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. She's packed with numerous weapon systems, one of the most lethal ship on the oceans, capable of projecting American diplomacy around the globe. Now retired, I was the manager of the Ingalls Shipbuilding steel procurement group responsible for the procurement of all the plate, sheet, pipe, tubing, fittings, flanges, castings, shipboard electrical cable, fasteners, and many other items. Although retired, I'm consulting for a UK foundry, which produces high performance castings for the American shipbuilding industry.
600 gallons a tank = 2200 liters . Using 1 1/5 full tank per year , caribean diesel 1.30 dollars /liter = 2200x1.5x1.3 = 4290us$ . Sounds really good, even 6000u$ sounds really good Also I guess insurance for a powerBoat could be almost avoid or minimal due to the strenght of the boat. I guess maintenance is less also.
And when you start to get a little older and the aches and pains appear, the power boat comforts and reliability become very attractive. If you're prepared to potter along at 6 knots the fuel costs are not prohibitive and when I lived on a 50ft Trawler the reality is that you spend 90% of your time anchored or at the dock.
That is a really high amount of waste production for a couple or a family. I sail and hike in nature, but I really do not understand why power boaters come to nature. Even in Sweden, where there is so much good seamanship, this is a huge problem. Specially in July.

Yes it depends on the budget. For crossing oceans in a power boat, I'd go for one of the new expensive power catamarans. The best have lots of solar and diesel-electric machinery, keeping the fuel cost down. When it's sunny you may even go fully electric, so they've infinite reach. Not very fast but anyhow. And the inner space is huge, like a condo on water.
We bought our 42 Foot sailboat just north of Seattle in 2000 and sailed it to HI. We lived on it for 15 winters 3 or 4 months at a time. In 2015 we gave the sailboat to our son who has lived in HI since 1986 and it is taken out often several times a week. Fastforward to 2022 and I would now purchase a Nordhavn 76 and shove off for a around the world adventure if I could afford it. MV's put them in gear and go That Way. I would now rather cross the Pacific via power and not sail.

I actually have the answer. You own a sailboat and occasionally you rent a power boat. (Or visa Versa). The boat you rent should be in a remote location.
Great vlog! Looking forward to see your next video and eventually what your next boat will be. If I was in the market for a new boat(I am age 65), and could design it from the ground up I would go with a trawler type vessel(no sails), big enough for total comfort for my wife and me(38 ft or so), with as efficient cat hulls as possible, hybrid direct drive shaft engines similar to what is on the HH 44 Cat big enough engines so I could cruise at 10 knots efficiently using diesel as needed, lots of lithium batteries and solar to have noisy, smelly diesel running as little as possible, have as quiet a generator as possible, just in case. With the above you could still cruise at times on only electric and very seldom run the generator, if at all. My cruising area(my mission), is coastal cruising inside the 2nd largest barrier reef in world, Great Mayan Reef, that runs from the Bay Islands to the tip of the Yucatan just north of Cancun. My wife and I don't need a very pimped out boat so we could keep the vessel relatively light to be more efficient moving through the water.
I share your love of baths Megan. We have a St. Francis SF50 Catamaran (which we love). Many of the older models have Bathtubs. Best of luck in your search.
It’s been a dilemma for me to choose between a sailboat or a trawler cruiser. Though the price of the trawler, operating and maintenance costs are more than a sailboat, the convenience of not being becalmed, getting to your destination quicker, the amenities which are customizable and other factors, make it so alluring. However, the wind in your sails have enchanted sailors since the beginning of sailing. “Thy sea, oh God, so great”
If your primary interest is the destination get a power boat. If you are as much or more interested in the journey as the destination you may prefer a sailboat. If it's 50/50 you could always look into motor sailor's.. Personally I'm a it's about the journey guy. 🙂 Thanks for the video!

Right? No hate here but it is mind boggling. Easy 500k plus boats on slips that cost >$600/month in slip fees not counting maintenance and electricity. Most of the year they never move. So they pay well over $3000/month to use a boat a few times/year
I learned to sail on the Lido 14 and to race on the Shields 30' keeled boat. To this day I love them both. Have you ever sailed a Sabot? I'm a big guy, 6' 3", 220 and sailing the Sabot I swear it was so tipsy that I had to watch how I breathed because too big a breath threatened to topple the boat.

Great Conversation! I totally agree that one should ask- "what is your mission?" and then buy a boat type accordingly. A nice follow up vid would be on a way more fuel efficient- full displacement trawler like a Nordhavn or Bering. If you don't mind seeing the world at 6-8kts, maybe a good option. Cheers

Yeah, I'm wondering if all the running costs required on a big motor yacht like this one were discussed. Seems like a LOT of hidden costs. The fact that a crew is needed speaks volumes.The payroll overhead wasn't mentioned..
The dark side is tempting. Good episode... I have always been curious if the amount of motoring is underrepresented in sailing vlogs. Sounds like the answer is at least a little.
A lot. Our sail cruising involves getting into anchorages 60-70 miles apart in 12 hours daylight. Sometimes you have to be there because coral reefs in the dark are no place to sail. So motor it is.
Knowing how people (me) think, I can see the thought train, "How much money/income/etc. would I have to have to just Jump Ship to the power yacht world?" Life isn't about what you accrue, it's about what you ENJOY!
A suggestion to owners of powerboats: a pre-oiler that fills the bearings with oil pressure just prior to starting it can cut down on a lot of the wear that engines experience. A diesel engine that experiences little in the way of starting and stopping, but just runs will last a higher number of hours than one that has to be started and stopped cold multiple times per 10 hours, and the pre-oilers available mitigate that to some extent.
I like the Nordhavn sitting in the next berth a tad better if you are going to the dark side, a lot slower but sailboat type range : )

I was out on my Laser earlier this month. Pure easy sailing magic. Love the Gilligan reference. As I have alluded to before, yall are as talented at entertaining as you are at boating. And I wonder what Patrick would of a cat with a full canopy of solar. Silent, odorless, low maintenance, and can power all the other systems. He seemed to make a case for it without actually saying it. Can't wait to see your next one.

I found your channel just a couple of days ago and watched maybe 5 episodes. During the last episode, I wanted to urge you to look at a Nordhavn. We had a new Jeanneau 36i sailboat from 2007 to 2018 in San Diego. I had dreams of going to distant shores and doing the single-handed transpac, but work always got in the way. Now we are waiting on our new Nordhavn and.... warm cozy cabin, protected from the wind and rain, no heeling, eat and drink without spilling, fuel efficient, long range trawler, heater, AC, washer & dryer, lithium, starlink, etc. Just as your guest said, you end up motoring the sailboat a lot of the time, wait longer for the right amount of wind from the right direction, zig zag longer distances instead of taking the direct route, and are living in cramped quarters looking out through small portholes. If you want to experience the fun of sailing, carry along a Hobie with amas and a sail.
PS Nordhavn has a 56ft motor-sailer in their brokerage listings. (in FL).

Know your feeling. Grew up with my dad and mom's 60 footer power boat and we traveled everywhere f from NE Canada to the Chesapeake and most of the inlets along the way. I was doing my 4 hour watch at 9 years old. When I became an adult and developed income, I bought a sail boat and sailed From Canada to Nantucket and everywhere indeterminate for 18 years. Now rhea we are older m we are moving to a power catamaran. The ones we are lookingat will cruise atb8 k n it's and can go 2900 km on one fillup, yet can pump up to 18 knots to get around weather or make a destination. 😊

One wrench that you didn't throw into the mix is solar/electric power cat... Something such as Silent Yachts? Maybe out of the price range you were talking about but that concept provides the simplicity of power boats with the operating cost of sailboats. I know that there is a huge upfront cost but think in the coming years that will continue to come down. Right now, that technology only makes sense with a luxury yacht price point. But the concept I think is a great merger of the convenience, cost and capability you were talking about towards the end of your video. They can traverse oceans and do so with very little fuel... comparable to the amount of fuel needed to sail across oceans.
Yes, will be interesting to see how that tech evolves. For us, we really like catching the wind

You talk about sailing vs motoring. And the cost of fuel. Have you looked at solar power? There are quite a few cat manufacturers making solar powered cats.
I would really like your take on pure solar catamarans.
One guy turned his sail cat into a pure solar cat by removing the mast and rigging then built a roof over most of the boat and installed solar panels. It uses no gas or diesel he claims it can go 100 miles a day and still keep the batteries charged at 10 to 12 knots
Low running cost.
Low maintenance
Quiet running
Lithium and Tesla motors.
High start up cost.
But not as high as $1000 an hour for fuel.

I'm so glad you made a video like this.. I've been pondering the benefits of a 45ft sailboat or a same size trawler with more room because I don't plan on moving long distances and the extra fuel usage doesn't matter as much if you're only travelling maybe 2000nm a year when you weigh it up with the cost of maintaining rigging and sails it doesn't seem too bad but the extra space and layout seem like a major benefit.. love sailing, I really do.. but I'm really on the fence on the two. A big motor yacht using $800 fuel an hour is obviously not in that equation 😅 Now, I still need to watch the video. Curious to see the points made.. wish me luck to coming closer to an answer! 😁🍻
Buy the trawler. More space and comfort, less hassle, and you can do 7 or 8 knots all day in a straight line. Unless you want to do a 2000 mile passage get your sailing fix on someone else's yacht. I went to the dark side and I've got no regrets, except for the odd fuel bill 😥 but I don't have to buy new sails and rigging either.
Okay, so not sure if I came too much closer to my conclusion.. I am definitely leaning more in the trawler direction, but I feel like sailing may be an adventure I want now while I'm still younger and then settle into the convenience of a trawler later on when life needs to mellow out a bit! Would still love to see you guys speaking to more people about the trawler life if you come across any on your travels.
And thanks Stephen for your input, that's definitely helpful to know I wasn't just imagining the convenience of it.. I've worked on trawlers and always thought they'd make amazing live aboards!
You can eliminate fuel cost with dynamos and Edison generators with inverters and to power high torque electric motors and screw pump jet s. You have an unlimited range electric power yacht propulsion system without fuel or pollution.
Sluys in Poulsbo is amazing! The people there are the best and the munchies are first rate! I won't say anything about the pronunciation (look at the spelling of my name!! lol). I'm so glad that you got to go there and enjoy their hospitality.

In 2018, I purchased new sails for my 50 sailboat. Main + Genoa + furling Code Zero + running rigging was over $20k. Those who think that wind is a "free" fuel source are delusional.
My advice is go do a sailing course at your local club - most clubs have a range of boats suitable for different ages and skills. Once you get past the intial fear of falling in or tipping over (yeah everyone has it) and you get to the stage of being able to lie down in a hull (or have a friendly skipper aka Nick) and just let the wind do the work, it is pure magic. You don't need some high performance, go fast, vessel to enjoy life - life is a journey not a destination, some of the best sails I have ever had have been in light winds with a wine, good friends and good conversation, for my adrenalin rush I go racing, not as fast as cars but no brakes in a pack of boats with 1/4T at ramming speed is exciting enough.

One interesting idea I have seen recently is taking a high end sailing cat and then converting it to parallel hybrid electric. I am against electric cars but I think electric can make sense on a sailing yacht because it can be used for short distances and thrusters. With the advantage of still having a diesel engine if needed.
Yes, we have a friend who just did that. They are seatrialing now. Very curious to see how it goes.
Very enlightening. But frankly it says the obvious if you do the math in decision making. There really is such a thing, but it is not used. Only a hardened true math geek would know. LOL. You actually create a decision profile for each decision maker so that the perditions reflect the values of the decision maker. Here is a little secret to math in decision making. Divide the domain of interest. Cost to fuel. Total costs include sail costs and time cost (there is such a thing), learning costs, Which includes likely mistakes made with each type of sailing, and amortization costs. You need to keep luxury level approximately constant. Then the conversation of how big it the bath tub becomes relevant. The Caribbean is a small bath tub comparted to the Pacific. Estimate hours to destinations and thus fuel burned .

Power boaters can get where they want to be faster. Sailboaters are where they want to be when they are on the sailboat. Getting back to sailing. If one is contemplating singlehanded ocean crossings which would be best, mono or cat?
Can't help but comment on the DDG 100 USS KIDD, shown in your video. This 9300 ton Aegis destroyer is powered by four LM2500 gas turbines that can move this surface combatant at 30+ knots. USS KIDD was built by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. She's packed with numerous weapon systems, one of the most lethal ship on the oceans, capable of projecting American diplomacy around the globe. Now retired, I was the manager of the Ingalls Shipbuilding steel procurement group responsible for the procurement of all the plate, sheet, pipe, tubing, fittings, flanges, castings, shipboard electrical cable, fasteners, and many other items. Although retired, I'm consulting for a UK foundry, which produces high performance castings for the American shipbuilding industry.

600 gallons a tank = 2200 liters . Using 1 1/5 full tank per year , caribean diesel 1.30 dollars /liter = 2200x1.5x1.3 = 4290us$ . Sounds really good, even 6000u$ sounds really good
Also I guess insurance for a powerBoat could be almost avoid or minimal due to the strenght of the boat.
I guess maintenance is less also.
And when you start to get a little older and the aches and pains appear, the power boat comforts and reliability become very attractive. If you're prepared to potter along at 6 knots the fuel costs are not prohibitive and when I lived on a 50ft Trawler the reality is that you spend 90% of your time anchored or at the dock.

That is a really high amount of waste production for a couple or a family. I sail and hike in nature, but I really do not understand why power boaters come to nature. Even in Sweden, where there is so much good seamanship, this is a huge problem. Specially in July.
I drive a diseal excurstion....I feel like i get the power boat owner....its not fun at the pump but you got the power if you need it, you feel great when she's roaring thru the wind. However that tesla truck keeps catching our eye and thoughts....

Yes it depends on the budget. For crossing oceans in a power boat, I'd go for one of the new expensive power catamarans. The best have lots of solar and diesel-electric machinery, keeping the fuel cost down. When it's sunny you may even go fully electric, so they've infinite reach. Not very fast but anyhow. And the inner space is huge, like a condo on water.

We bought our 42 Foot sailboat just north of Seattle in 2000 and sailed it to HI. We lived on it for 15 winters 3 or 4 months at a time. In 2015 we gave the sailboat to our son who has lived in HI since 1986 and it is taken out often several times a week. Fastforward to 2022 and I would now purchase a Nordhavn 76 and shove off for a around the world adventure if I could afford it. MV's put them in gear and go That Way. I would now rather cross the Pacific via power and not sail.

I actually have the answer. You own a sailboat and occasionally you rent a power boat. (Or visa Versa). The boat you rent should be in a remote location.

Great vlog! Looking forward to see your next video and eventually what your next boat will be. If I was in the market for a new boat(I am age 65), and could design it from the ground up I would go with a trawler type vessel(no sails), big enough for total comfort for my wife and me(38 ft or so), with as efficient cat hulls as possible, hybrid direct drive shaft engines similar to what is on the HH 44 Cat big enough engines so I could cruise at 10 knots efficiently using diesel as needed, lots of lithium batteries and solar to have noisy, smelly diesel running as little as possible, have as quiet a generator as possible, just in case. With the above you could still cruise at times on only electric and very seldom run the generator, if at all. My cruising area(my mission), is coastal cruising inside the 2nd largest barrier reef in world, Great Mayan Reef, that runs from the Bay Islands to the tip of the Yucatan just north of Cancun. My wife and I don't need a very pimped out boat so we could keep the vessel relatively light to be more efficient moving through the water.

It’s been a dilemma for me to choose between a sailboat or a trawler cruiser. Though the price of the trawler, operating and maintenance costs are more than a sailboat, the convenience of not being becalmed, getting to your destination quicker, the amenities which are customizable and other factors, make it so alluring. However, the wind in your sails have enchanted sailors since the beginning of sailing. “Thy sea, oh God, so great”
I guess for me it’s the environmental cast using all that fuel. Wind all the way for me.

Plus IME motorboaters are not attentive to their surroundings at all and are often a cause of accidents and disturbing noise.

If your primary interest is the destination get a power boat. If you are as much or more interested in the journey as the destination you may prefer a sailboat. If it's 50/50 you could always look into motor sailor's.. Personally I'm a it's about the journey guy. 🙂 Thanks for the video!

Right? No hate here but it is mind boggling. Easy 500k plus boats on slips that cost >$600/month in slip fees not counting maintenance and electricity. Most of the year they never move. So they pay well over $3000/month to use a boat a few times/year

I learned to sail on the Lido 14 and to race on the Shields 30' keeled boat. To this day I love them both. Have you ever sailed a Sabot? I'm a big guy, 6' 3", 220 and sailing the Sabot I swear it was so tipsy that I had to watch how I breathed because too big a breath threatened to topple the boat.
Yes, I (Nick) learned on a sabot as well as old IOR boats. Invaluable lessons….I’m a better sailor for it.
