    Of all the types of vlogs you guys have put out over the years, these "what we've learned" types are some of my favorite. No one does it better than you guys. It actually helps when I try to "convince" my lovely wife that we can do this...eventually...

    I grew up sailing a Sunfish and an Ensign. I recommend renting a Sunfish to anyone who wants to learn how to sail. Instant feedback. I also recommend finding out when the weeknight beer can races are held and walking the docks, especially on windy evenings, and ask folks if they need more rail meat or deck poodles. It's an easy, and cheap, way to get sailing experience and start networking with other boats in the fleet. And get an auto inflatable life jacket with a built-in harness and wear it all the time. It's much more comfortable than a bulky life jacket so you are more likely to wear it. It also makes it easier to get a man overboard back on board by attaching a halyard to the harness and winching them up onto the boat. I had a crewman fall overboard at the dock and it was almost impossible to get him back onboard. One reason was that I was laughing so much. It wouldn't have been so funny had it happened at sea.

    For the past three years I started to look at and subscribe to many many sailing channels for the purpose of learning the”ropes” for when the moment arrived I can buy my own small sailing boat. I rarely comment because I don’t know, so I read the comments and questions of the other audiences to have a sense of what to learn. However I must say that you guys are my favorite, you guys are so charming and witty, besides so knowledgeable. Love you guys 🫶🏽 Looking forward to learn much more. Thanks

      Hey wow thanks Dwayne, really appreciate that. We film a ton of stuff all the time that doesn’t make it into the videos…basically because we are just being silly or boring which we really are….but when it comes to publishing we always try and make it at least somewhat useful info. So it makes me happy to hear that it is. Best to you!

    We’ve a 32ft westerly fulmar since 2007. We were thinking of upgrading when we become full time live aboards just to have creature comforts and space for visitors. We’re thinking now about basing the journeys around the Irish coastline. SO much to see on our beautiful shores. There’s enough channels doing the Caribbean etc. it also means we can sail away asap & yet close enough if the horrible happens to our parents

    I really appreciate you guys making our lives better it’s always a fresh of common sense we get from you all. Onof the add a little food for thought when you talk about go small. I like to start people off on a sunfish but then I like to take them to a C-Scow because that is a boat you can never outgrow you only age out of. I also like to give them a barometer of time for your novice belt you need 250 races; for your intermediate belt you need another 200, and for your advance belt you need another 200 which equals up to 650 races. As I like to explain race is an acronym.
    R . rehearse
    A. Actual
    C. Current
    E. Environment. Truly it’s just a fancy way of saying saling practice. Keep in mind racing is not an aggressive sport it is a progressive sport. Thank you again for making our lives better John Sailing Instructor that’s a school bus driver that used to be a video editor that used to be a yellow cab driver that used to be a limo driver in Kansas City.

    Lots of sage advice here. On the subject of spare parts, I remember reading a letter to the editor (IIRC) in an old motoring magazine where the author was saying the place for the spare part was installed before the original broke, not in the boot (it was an English magazine). The main item under discussion was fan belts, as back then this was a standard spare part to carry. Much easier to install things when you are in control of the schedule (rather than at the side of the road in the rain e.g.). When, and how often, to do this is where tricky part is.

    you guys give us hope. We are moving to FL soon with the "big sailing dream". My wife is finally starting to talk about " our" dream to her friends and family. She's lived by the ocean her whole life, I'm a farmers son from kansas, but it started as my dream. It's actually starting to feel like we are actually gonna do this. Great advice on the "roles" while onboard. And it's super helpful to hear someone say that both parties need to know HOW to operate the boat, but there are definitely things the other partner doesn't need to worry about, because their counterpart has it covered.
    Also. The smaller boat as your first boat REALLY hits home for us. We're in our mid 40's, and I have been trying to tell my lovely wife that a 30-35 footer is where I wanna start. She want's the 45+ cat........ we don't have that budget. lol......... well, we could. but I don't want to be boat poor. I wanna go sailing

    • @TheOKellys
      @TheOKellys  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeh a smaller boat is so great on so many levels…really takes the pressure off and puts the fun in. But also, it’s harder to live on those…. So ideally, ya go get something you can bruise up for a season, go get wet and sunburn and have some laughs, then go get that big cat. The cheap little boat, ya lose $5k on….whatever…. And your instincts are right regarding the roles and relationship. It’s almost always our (this is Nick writing this) idea, and it has to be a full-on US thing…the teamwork part is 100x more important than the waterline. Maybe 1000x. I hope we see you out there!

    • @helimx
      @helimx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheOKellys So we have done the off grid side by side living in our van. 2019 sprinter that I built out. I'm a helicopter mech, and we followed my work for a couple years, so we've got the roles part figured out when it comes to the day to day, i think ;), along with spared and provsioning. And we are looking to live aboard, and know that suffering creature comforts is part of the whole adventure. But it being such a new thing, is daunting. Neither of us have spent more than a day or 2 on a boat other than a cruise ship. lol.
      We have scraped and clawed at every penny saved. I won't be able to not work, but have a pretty decent schedule to make it happen in the beginning. And, can and probably will, go back to fighting wildfires, AKA hurricane season, and spend our "off" season on our boat. Trying to learn the investment, to make sailing a full time relity, is where I'm at right now..... It's gonna take time, but we are doing our best to take the steps to take that first step.
      thanks for the reply. I'm 100% sure we will see yall out there. Some day. ;)

    One of my favorite things about sailing on small dinghy size sailboats is pushing the envelope to the point where I would tip the boat over. Then I had to swim around to the bottom-side step on the keel and lean back with all my weight and right the boat. Then I had to pull myself back up into the boat. You can't right a 45-foot sailboat if you tip it on its side!

    The wife and I have a condo. It’s so easy to just lock the door and leave for six months. When you return, everything is the exactly the same. It might be a consideration. We are seriously considering a 40-46’ mono or maybe a 37-38’ Cat. If we can live on the boat, we will rent our condo. It will take a year to see how it goes. There’s only 3 miles between our condo and the boat which will be docked in Marina Del Rey California. So I think we are in the perfect situation. Plus, I’m retiring in two years. So we have nothing holding us back (Never had children). Just a 3.5 lbs. Yorkie. Good luck guys. We were considering buying pre owned because we watched your videos that said to, but I can’t get over someone else’s butt on my toilet seat. Good luck guys.

    Good stuff. Yep. Been there, done that. I see that you had a KP 44? I had one a 1981. Overall a very nice boat. Once tankage and some wiring and plumbing handles. A great sailing boat. Almost cutting edge for a cruiser back when she was designed. Still a damn good boat. I had no structural or design issue. And the ole 4-154 wouldn’t die. Ha ha. We ran dive/sail charters part time on ours. No TH-cam then! Love cats but!! Can’t afford them. Or at least didn’t want to go into debt for one. The KP was cash. Really nice Multi’s are half a million at the least! And well over a million for the newer ones that are lighter weight and much better sailing and much better built. You really PAY for them. Hi, Big fan and fellow cruiser here! Great video! Looking forward to see exactly out you fit the knew boat. Are you going to put in an infrared camera? Great feature for safety(if you have a man overboard at night, can make stuff floating in the water or a shoal sticking up out of the water visible, or uncharted land visible? You haven given some more clues. As I already made an educated guess. Your are negotiating with Chris White to buy his Chris White 55 based in Mexico? I hope it works out. I like that choice better than the Outremer 55. Maybe won't be quite as quick in light air or quite as fast overall than the Outremer but it will be a lot more comfortable overall(dry weight about 2/3's of a ton more than the Outremer?). Great forward outdoor helm station and great indoor helm station. Plus in most respects(standing rigging, running rigging, sails, engines your getting a pretty new boat since Chris White salvaged her and put her back together.

    Re: House - many debates with fellow transients re this, for years hearing “don’t worry about the future, you could be dead tomorrow” & similar.
    I don’t own a "home", I own property (like cattle), increasing equity, security, nothing fancy, lease covers costs, agent manages it, peace of mind knowing it's there if/when required.
    Curious re main “Sail Handling” intentions/plans. 😉

    Wow! Saw this and I thought of you both!!! I think it is in Tonga right now, but- I'll deliver it to the PNW for reasonable dough. It's not my bag, but Nautilus Yacht Management seems to pick & choose the boats they'll represent very carefully. I've been wowwed by a few of their recent listings. Although a touch older, it is aluminum, very well built & VERY well owned since 2013. A modest (translate: expensive) refit in 2019 addressed any obvious issues (standing/running rigging, engines, systems, etc...) 60' of catamaran perfection and in your ball park. Performance, toys, room & it seems to be running well. It's all 230v though. Lemmino know when you want me to pick her up for you!

      @@TheOKellys I'd argue that with you (aluminum over 40 feet becomes a huge weight saver) but, as she sits- she's a tub 'O lard. Shave your head, have Megan go down to a Dorothy Hamill 'Camel' haircut (Olympic skater) & she'll be fast! Not Chris White fast, but- much faster than Clarity. Hmmm, with all of that extra cash burning a hole in your pocket, I was thinking a new main, a 120% Genoa & a Code 0 type sail (it's too confusing for me to understand the variances)- she'd be eating up the miles- and in safety!

    also. i bet that many people, even or especially those with fully functioning joints, would be happy to see sponsor shoutouts in your vids, for a bit of extra income to help with your adventures. it's our advetures, too, vicariously. perhaps you can put it to a facebook/twitter/patreon vote. as you've said before, you'd only accept sponsorships for products you'd feel comfortable endorsing. i'm sure you could test-ride surfshark for a week, 'for the cause' ✊. ha it's even sailing-related, even if in name only. a youtuber buying yeezee's with sponsor moolah is one thing; you being able to spring for an extra piece of maritime safety (or that insanely priced starlink) is quite another... h'wood stars have podcasts now, chockfull of sponsorships. and stars you are! 100k subs (and a new boat!?) would be a great milestone to start with yt sponsorships methinks

    Well, my first with the O'Kelly's, I'm gonna follow this for a while, looks interesting I watch my share of sailing, not that I do it but I certainly enjoy the watch. What I do find interesting as well, you guys seem very 'grounded' in your sailing life, get rid of 'stuff', lighten the load. No pets, no getting pregnant, no kids. Not that I'm against any of those things, but on a SV? I just don't see it. But that's just me. Fair winds and following seas.

  • @Ron-zr6se
    @Ron-zr6se 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Where I'm located, having a pet onboard is not a problem and the places where it is a problem are currently not worth visiting. When it comes to boats, get what you can afford, trying to stretch your budget to get something bigger will end up biting you in the rear. Also the romance of sailing may need to give way to the practicality of power the older you get. In either case as Parley Revival puts it, twenty years from now, you will have more regrets of what you didn't do than what you did.
