Only problem with AO's advice is she may no longer be able to do Uber with a 2-3 thousand dollar car. Not saying it can't be done, just need to make sure it's within their guidlines.

He did not specify a timeline in which the car needed to be sold. She could keep the car, make $2000 per month during the Summer, pay down the debt so that she isn't upside down anymore. When the school year starts sell the car, and take a small personal loan (if needed, other use leftover cash from Uber) to purchase a $2000 - $4000 vehicle and then add the loan to the snowball. Apart from that, it's NOT impossible to find a used vehicle to do Uber Eats, Doordash, Grubhub, Instacart, Postmates or Amazon Flex. He offered very good advice, but I also understand not everyone is a solution focused thinker

Do doordash or grubhub instead, you don't have to have people in your car then. I hated driving people around, but food doesn't have anything to say and it doesn't care what I listen to on the radio.

Hold on, if she gets a $2000-$3000 car, she won’t be able to Uber. Uber car needs to be 10 years old or less. I highly doubt she can get a car less than 10 years old for $2000-$3000.
She can prob do Uber eats or doordash. To substitute for Uber rides..
Uber and DoorDash…. If you really calculate the cost of the 🚗 car, depreciation, all that…. Drivers don’t come up a head.
Your mileage might vary. You better use every dollar calculator on your side hustle and see if you are making.

As school teacher it might be work as online tutor. No upfront cost…… just time…. There are people who will pay American just to learn English overseas… over online.

The car loan doesn’t seem like the problem here, $60k in consumer debt is eating her lunch. A single person should be able to live on $50k a year in Texas.
I think she said the consumer debt is about 6K, the 60-ish K is student loans.
Depends what area of Houston she lives in. Might want to think of moving somewhere cheaper and commute
Exactly. The student loan debt and her intense focus on a non-productive business is the problem. That focus should be spent on frugality and paying off those loans, not finnagling vehicles that actually produce an income stream. They missed it on this call.
I LOVE her. She is clear and concise, she has her details down and she knows what she wants for her future. On top of all that- she called BEFORE making the decision.

...which would simply be the latest in a string of bad decisions. Hope she "turns a corner now" and takes the portion of the advice that makes sense. Uber and Lyft -- out, unless you're driving a shiny new car. She may know what she wants for her future, but she's clueless as to how to get there.

Better than being a self-proclaimed “health coach”, too. This newly-coined term “coach” is a loophole for people practicing things without the required education and licenses. It reflects poorly on a teacher, and if she were to get in trouble, she could lose her teaching credential.

She had good intentions but going about it the wrong way.
I understand. My breaking point was I borrowed money from a friend. A LARGE amount. Albeit they had it but if I had my act together I wouldn’t have to ask on a short period of time and a large amount. I was mortified since I never want to treat friends as a ATM. I paid it back but it was stressful owing the money more than my regular bills.

@@FlamingEmber go to car fax and get an estimate.. then go to dealerships and see what they will offer. When they give you their estimate, if it’s lower than carmax, tell them you have a higher offer with carmax and they will pay you. There is a chip crisis right now and they can’t make many new vehicles so they are paying top dollar for used cars. Now is the time to do it.
I’ve also heard Dave recommend a more lucrative side hustle for teachers like tutoring. Good luck Chantel! You can do this 💪🏻

It just goes to show we don’t the social supports needed in our community to teach us about financial choices. Listen to your body, if it feels wrong just pause. People (too many) want to take advantage of you not knowing better, to make you in debt forever.

The problem with this plan is that uber requires you to have a newer car.
Doordash, Postmates, and Instacart are great options if you don't fit the car requirements for Uber.
Amazon Flex too!!!! You can do that as long as it’s not a coupe.

Car Max is a horrible place to buy a vehicle. In most cases you can buy a brand new car at a dealer for the same or less money than CarMax wants for one of their two year old vehicles.
Buy from friends and family. Never buy from stranger
It caters to the lazy and ill informed. The car industry has blown smoke for so long about how they are the only way to buy and sell a car, that we accept it as fact. Lots of fear mongering in there as well.
I find it hard to trust those 2nd hand car lots

This is horrible advice they gave. You can not do any delivery service with a used car for that cheap honestly. You are looking at huge repair bills if your not able to fix the car yourself. What a nightmare. Uber money = car money...its that simple..

My wife just completed what Anthony advised as far as selling our fairly new truck and getting personal loan for difference. In our case vroom gave us highest amount for our truck. Not an ad for them but really just encouraging to look around for best price our swing was $5k in the amount we were upside down. Get it Chantel

That’s one big problem I notice with the advice given on the Ramsey show. Seems like they always talk so generally rather than look into the specifics of the situation, and in doing so, often miss out on details that make their advice impossible. “Just go deliver pizzas at night and make an extra $20k a year”, is not very helpful advice if you don’t look into the specifics of the situation.

Uber driving also requires you buy commercial insurance, which is very expensive, which means she would be better off doing another side hustle.

She won’t make $2k extra per month working Uber AND teaching!!! During the summer she can make $2k which means $6k total after which she can maybe make $1k/month on top of her teaching job. Also, she can’t Uber in a $2k car because one, it’s not reliable enough and two, I wouldn’t get into a $2k car as a customer. Unrealistic advice based on unrealistic information. She needs to sell the Cherokee to a private party and use the money to buy a NEW reliable subcompact car like a Corolla. Why? Because it’s reliable, has very low maintenance, AND is presentable to Uber customers. Basically, her solution is to work, either for Uber OR find a better paying teaching job. BUT perhaps what’s more important is how she manages to spend so much money on living expenses. Sounds like she can downsize and cut back on expenses. Also, she shouldn’t have a business right now.

Uber requires the car to be above a certain year. A better option to do with an older vehicle is doordash ubereats grub hub, etc. there is no minimum year for your vehicle on those platforms.

I'm a Special Education teacher and I make good money on the side doing remote tutoring. The bare minimum rate I accept is $55/hour which is extremely generous, you can charge $100+/hour for specialized tutoring
If you are going to sell to get out of an upside-down auto loan, NEVER go to a stealership and avoid the wholesellers. Sell it privately using the classifieds. And buy the next one off the classifieds too (just make sure to look for obvious issues and if it still looks good pay a local repair shop for a mechanical inspection)
I did. Took a used Honda accord, mechanic said it's losing oil & power steering going out. Next car, a Corolla, all good-driving it right now

Uber requires a newer car. So that’s out of the window now with the Cherokee sold and the cheap car purchase. She needs an alternate way to make extra income.
Driving for Uber may be out the door, but delivering for Uber Eats, DoorDash, Postmates, and GrubHub is still an option!
Doordash doesn’t care about the year of the vehicle as much. Ubereats and grubhub are other options
Buying from CarMax is lazy. Use them to research prices or test drive and negotiate a better deal with someone who will negotiate.
Possibly, CarMax has a great reputation of quality cars vs so many crooked lots.

It would be helpful to explain the proper way to sell a car private sale. There's only a few right ways and many wrong ways. A crook would be more than happy to steal a car from a person on fire to get out of debt. Thanks Ramsey Team.
Problem with that is, she will ask for her payoff, not the actual value of the car. Which is way less. She will be offended at real value offers. However any dealer can work magic and make that negative equity disappear and reappear on a new loan!

Problem is she takes his advise she can no longer drive for Uber because they require the vehicle be less than 10 years old with good paint, body, and interior. Good luck trying to find a car that Uber would approve of for less than two grand!

I agree with what Anthony said about trying to privately sell the vehicle. However I feel like she should try to do online tutoring. Make a good bit of money doing that hustling during the summer and while school is in session.

Uber on a car that costs 2k? I doubt a car like that would qualify. Even doing delivery service can end up costly because the car could need many repairs due to extensive use.

Better idea is the pay the current car down to the break even point, go back to CarMax and sell it (Anthony walked right past that part unfortunately), then figure out what a “cheap” used car currently costs ($2-3 grand is going to be challenging but possible).
