    We got a rescue puppy and within 2 weeks she was outside potty trained.
    I used the bell method. I put a bell on the door handle, which i rang each time before we went outside. When she went potty, she got lots of praise.
    Within 2 weeks she understood that ringing the bell was her way to tell us she needed to go out.
    Shes two now, the bell is gone but she gives us a little woof to let us know.

    What if your dog gives no signs at all that they need to go? Our dog will be playing and then just stands and pees.

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge  หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      Remain observant. Sometimes those signs are very very subtle. Furthermore, preemptively take your dog out before those signs emerge. Relying on a dog who is too young to communicate to you they have to go out is an easy mistake to make. We don’t rely on babies and diapers to notify us that they have to go for example. Hope this helps! Best of luck!

      It felt like this to us as well when we got our girl.. But we took her out every 30 minutes (I set an alarm for that so I would remember) and that really helped reduce the accidents. And over time we started to notice her signs. Subtle but they were there.
      Good luck to you with your pup! It's a difficult time (not just because of potty training..) but in the end it's so worth it. We relied heavily on Zak's videos with all her training. She just turned 1 year old and I couldn't imagine life without her anymore. Yes, we are still not out of puberty, but most days she is an absolute dream!

    We have our new 9 week old puppy for a week and a half now. We gave too much room to explore and had lots of accidents, now narrowing that. I feel we’ve already set bad habits, can we still correct those after she’s used to our mistakes? ie not taking her out enough, no crate except at night (she can go eight hours at night) cries in crate during the day if we even try. So glad I found your channel! 😊

    Thanks for the video - you're so right, even for experienced owners it can be tough: We adopted a 7 yo dog who'd never lived inside a house (retired breeding Beagle) and we'd potty train her for weeks; next to no accidents. But sure enough, even right after pottying outside, she'd come in the house and, lightening-fast, squat down for a little spray of pee, which I interpret as a marking behavior (especially as we have 2 other dogs). Catching THAT any time before it's too late is hard, as she doesn't interrupt her Beagling-around behavior for more than an estimated second to squat down.

    I am really struggling with finding rewards for my puppy. He has a very sensitive stomach and so far the only thing he’s been able to eat is just his kibble and he does chew on a bully stick but I can’t find treats for him. Do you have a recommendation for treats? Should I just stick to basic meats like cooked chicken or turkey? Do you use just the meat section foods or use like meat from the deli? Thank you so much! We have a baby Rottweiler and I am trying to make sure he starts off as good as possible and are using all of your videos for training. So far he’s been the BEST puppy I’ve ever seen in my life. • @junulock
    @junulock หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    All our dogs understood the let’s go out and go potty. We had one smart GSD where if we weren’t paying attention when she needed to have the door opened she would actually come and grab your hand and pull you. She was so funny she’d do her business then spin her wheels and she was done. That dog though; we got her from our good friends and neighbors just down the road at 7 weeks old. She was one of 12 and I spent 2 weeks before she was home with us running over every day where I would put her in the bottom of Hanks 16 ft aluminum boat and feed her boiled chicken livers. That dog if she made 2 messes that was about it. But I was a kid at home and I would run her out every 4 hours. There was only one time where I had to grab her when she made a mistake early on. The whole house was linoleum except the carpet in the living room. She went in past the doorway and thought it was grass under her feet and started to squat. Dogs like kids when you start; they don’t know or understand anything. That’s the keepers job to teach them. It’s surprising how fast they can pick things up when you remember they can’t speak or talk with you but they can show you. I did this first with this dog and also my last one. I taught them to ask for what they want by giving the paw. I did that with food stuff. Mainly to avoid a food thief. If they asked politely 99% of the time they got what was asked for. That dog loved chicken. I took once when we had to run to town; I put 3 drumsticks right at the edge of the counter. She never touched or took them. But I sure got asked when we got home. She got all three, without the bones of course. This last dog when I tried this it was really fast how quickly he understood. It’s a bit like taking and showing a young child that can’t speak yet how to be able to ask for what they want using a hand gesture.

    That's exactly what happened to me with a dog I just rescued. Second day I took her for a walk, she didn't poop. As we were going up the stairs(3 flights), she stopped on the second and refused to go any farther. We walked past the other apartments to the other end of the staircase and reluctantly went up the 3rd floor Not 2 minutes into the house she went into the spare room and pooped. Rookie mistake on my part. But she is teaching me so much!!

    Zak, I have a puppy who is not yet fully vaccinated (he’s 8 weeks) and I live in an apartment with no real lawn. Because parvo is low in my area we have decided to just take him out to only one spot to potty train to limit risk. The problem is he wants to walk further and I worry that the space limitation is causing him not go. He will be about to pee inside but once brought outside he holds his bladder for 20> minutes only to go as soon as he’s indoors. We felt that waiting until 16 weeks to go outside to train would be detrimental to learning to potty train. How old do you start letting them out and what would you do with an 8 week old puppy if you didn’t have a private back yard?

    My female dog goes in the garden during the day and never has accidents during the day. She goes out before bed at 10 at night but since the winter started she can’t hold it during the night. However she is good at using the puppy pads. I put a row of 3 pads down just in front of the sofa and she uses one or two. Sometimes none!
    So it’s not a big problem except for the expense. And she is worse in wet weather because she doesn’t like rain.
    I mention that the dog is a female because over the years my experience of many dogs suggests that dogs have better bladder control.

    4:21 I love that you said this, because that's happened a few times. First week with my new puppy, 13 weeks old. I have like, a 3 second warning that she's about to pee 😂 Still learning, but she's learning. I've been taking her out 15 minutes every hour, and it's tedious but it has limited the accidents.

  • @mirawenya

    My pup was accident free at 9 weeks 3 days old, I stayed paranoid and vigilant until he was 6 months.
    I would never want to potty train a puppy without a garden. We spent most of the day outside in the garden in the first weeks. I'm fairly sure that set him up for success. Especially since he wouldn't pee or poop on walks before he was 4-5 months old.

    I got a new Frenchie Puppy recently, and my 7yr old frenchie and her get a long. but it can be a cartoon cloud of dust at times. the older dog will play and then will want to stop and the puppy doesnt understand its time to chill now. My older dog has been showing new behaviors like randomly getting on top of me and my roommate while we lay down, or now sleeping on pillows above our heads. Is there an easy way to teach the puppy to chill out when her sister decides that she has had enough? the most i have been able to do it just put the puppy in a time out area she cant not leave. removing her from the situation appears to work as a solution to a symptom but not a solution to the underlying problem.

    When we got our puppy, she seemingly peed constantly. I'm taking about 10 to 30 minutes... Turns out she had an infection, so yeah. Vet is a good call if you're unsure 😅
    After that i took her out every 30 minutes (with an alarm so i wouldn't forget) and if i felt like she was too distracted and might have had to go but didn't, I'd go back inside but take her back out 5 minutes later. Often that did the trick.
    And yes, she knows "go pee" and "go poo" and listens to that 😊 We always get comments from people who never even heard of that being possible 😂

    I like the look of the hands free leash but if you have a puller or a reactive dog, you're gonna go flying

    People are too concerned with their phones to be good dog trainers.

    Don't know why Joel Beckman is so against positive reinforcement.

      He isn't. He's against using positive reinforcement only. By definition you cannot get rid of unwanted behaviours with positive reinforcement.

    How to potty train your puppy fast!
    Take it outside constantly. When he goes then mark it with something positive. Over time he will learn to hold it.
    This guys talks so much crap about real trainers that actually give out real info but it takes him months to release this garbage 14 minutes lol.

    Deprecation of an expected reward is punishment- stop spreading the lie that you are “positive only”.

      Removing a reinforcing stimulus is actually negative reinforcement and wouldn’t be in the punishment quadrant. Punishment implies the stimulus is aversive.

      @@lindsaypalmer6434 Negative reinforcement is also not “ positive” only. Is it?

    very disappointed in your cnn appearance. while i fully adopt your approach with dogs. i even bought your book. you used the apperance to continue fighting dog trainers with different approaches that you and i disagree with. there are millions of people who are saying what noem did was right. the dog was dangerous. it killed chicken and bit the owner. on a farm this cannot be and therefore killing the dog was the right thing to do. all dog trainers need to come together here and tell america that this is wrong. we own and train dogs, because we love them. that should be enough to overcome the differences. not to belittle these differences, but when confronted with the idea of normalizing shooting puppies for being puppies or shooting goats for being goats we need to come together.
