- On this episode of Something To Wrestle, Bruce and Conrad revisit the 1996 Royal Rumble, which took place January 21, 1996, at the Selland Arena in Fresno, CA. In it, we'd see a main event featuring Bret Hart vs. The Undertaker for the WWF Championship. Plus, Goldust vs. Razor for the IC Title, Shawn Michaels winning the Royal Rumble, and much more!

This show was one of the most important in wrestling history for me. I had quit watching the WWF over a year prior, then a friend called and told me about Vader and Jake showing up, which was enough for me to tune in again.
As a huge Razor Ramon fan in the 5th grade, I was devastated with his loss....
96 was such a great year for wrestling all around
I wouldn’t say all around, it was a horrendous year for the WWF, one of their worst ever. It was also shitty for WCW until they caught lightning in a bottle with the nWo and Nitro became must see TV. ECW was starting to come into its own that year as well, but the following year was one of the best years ever for all 3 companies

I just watched SummerSlam 1991 and cannot believe you guys have not done a show on the pay-per-view. It's the best WWF production I've ever seen! From the intro to the mid-card to the match made in heaven and then the match made in hell. PLEASE DO A WATCH ALONG SUMMERSLAM 1991!!!!!
I don't know if Bruce was apart of that show. They only seem to do the ones he was involved with
@@Zanatos9 yeah fair enough. Man they should sit and watch it though, was just surprised to see alot of other ppvs around the time have been covered. Bret v Perfect a standout. Not hating here though, only love for the big man and bruce!
Bruce was fired in 91 after Mania VII a few weeks after the Warrior destroyed him on TV to write him out as a character, and he was gone until after Summerslam 92, September when he was rehired. He ended up being a top exec until his 2008 firing, AND THEN he's rehired in 2019 as the head writer of Raw AND Smackdown....

i was there in Fresno Selland Arena and saw Vader, Owen, and Yoko after the show in the back parking lot as i and many other fans were looking over rthe wall and sitting on the wall as vader whistled and yoko did the hand sign thing ,,, they totally broke kayfabe

I heard Charles Wright AKA the godfather, say that KAMA stood for "Kick Any Mans Ass" which I thought was pretty creative. I loved that gimmick. Fast forward 10-15 years and it could of got over huge.

Kevin Nash stated that he decided to leave the WWF at IYH in February 1996. Nash didn't like the finish to his cage match with Bret.
I remember Jake Roberts return in this as well as the gratuitous Sunny panty shots in the tag match. I also recall phoning the WWF Shopping Line for the Royal Rumble T-shirt.
Bruce sounded like he was being difficult in this interview. Also sounds like there was a fair bit of editing.
This show was the show that made me a WWF fan at the time. Shawn and Taker were the two figures that stood out, with Bret and Vader third and fourth. I liked stuff like the story of Phantom of the Opera as a 10 year old because movies and horror and seeing Taker with that mask was awesome, even if it was the result of a sucky ass injury. This is the reason why the Rumble was my favorite PPV even when I watched. 1997 is the better Rumble match and show, TBH, but WWF 1997 was a fantastic year all around. Best year of the Attitude era.

The second of three Royal Rumble world title matches Taker got screwed...the first being the casket match against Yoko at the '94 Rumble & the third being the casket match against HBK at the '98 Rumble
All 3x times I remember Taker had the WWF Championship in his hands till shit happens. Also it was how his mania stories were formed.
Now that you mention it, 1990s Royal Rumbles weren’t kind to Taker lol
1993: gets eliminated and attacked by Giant Gonzales who wasn’t even in the match
1994: gets screwed over by the majority of the heel roster while facing Yokozuna
1995: gets attacked by King Kong Bundy long enough for IRS and Dibiase to steal the urn
1996: gets screwed by Diesel seconds before winning the WWF championship from Bret Hart
1997: gets screwed by Paul Bearer during his match with Vader and then gets eliminated by an illegal Steve Austin during the Rumble
1998: gets screwed over by Kane during his Casket match against Shawn Michaels

You nailed it with “tries to be funny.” The humor used to be effortless with Bruce’s upbeat attitude, his impressions and chemistry with Conrad. It’s forced now with lots of jokes only he and Conrad get. I don’t want to hear how tired Bruce is every week. I know he is and I understand he has a demanding job, but I don’t want to hear about it.
I always wondered if there was concern if Yoko at his size, wouldnt have been able to go over the top rope. This is the only time I can remember him going over the top.
This is such a geeky comment in regards to the first middle finger in WWF I think it was The Mountie during the bossman feud, first one I ever remember. He got arrested and was having his fingerprints taken & quickly said you want a fingerprint use this one *flips bird*

It’s wasn’t just Austin purely that got over as the bass ass hero. There are major signs that the fans wanted that with how they reacted to baby face diesel compared to badass diesel and also with Sycho sid , especially at survivor series 96
Austin has told the story on his podcast that he was eliminated by accident and you can see him slam his arms on the mat when he gets up, definitely not rumor and innuendo
You could see Steve Austin do this during the PPV. He tries to get back in the ring but ref tells him otherwise and he slams his fist on the ring mat. Mr. Perfect seemed to be aware of this as you can hear him say "Wait, what happened to the Ring Master?" cutting Vince off to which Vince said "He must have been eliminated. We didn't see it. There's so much action here, at the Royal Rumble" Vince didn't seem to notice or know that Austin messed up.

If Diesel was going into a feud with Taker, it should of been Shawn an Davey Boy as the last two, for a chance to revenge the prior rumble that he kind of got screwed out of. But I don't know why I sit around an contemplate about this stuff.

The weirdest thing I remember from this show is Perfect and Vince constantly referring to Henry Godwinn as "The Hog Farmer" instead of his name. Like to the point where I started to suspect that they couldn't remember what his ring name was until much farther into the Rumble where they suddenly started using his name as if someone had to tell them over the headset.
They always called him that even before the Rumble. That was his nickname. Even other wrestlers referred to him as the Hog Farmer.

Hands down, my favorite Royal Rumble match of all time. This one had a great pace and great spots like Jake Roberts throwing the snake into the ring. I wish I still had my dad's VHS tape. I used to watch this all the time as a kid. The version on the network removed Hog Farmer's theme and replaced it with a horrid stereotypical country theme song. The dub over sounds terrible as you can barely hear Vince and Prefect on commentary when Hog Farmer comes out.
Hate the network messing with music it's why I actually cancelled my sub years ago, if you watched OG ECW the music dubs make actually unwatchable as everything is wrong Everybody in the arena dancing to here comes the hotstepper with some shitty music dubbed over, new jack run ins don't have natural born killa, no kid rock for kid kash,Dope Debonairs for Rhino,Enter Sandman,come out and play for Raven,Alice in chains for Tommy it's all just so wrong I had to download years worth of VHS rips.
@@WhatwouldRoddyPiperdo I was never a fan of ECW but I can completely understand how it would ruin the experience as the music that used was an important and memorable aspect of the show. Vince needs to pay for royalties. It's not like he can't afford it.
Yep. It’s the little things like not being able to hear Voodoo Chile when Hogan comes out on Nitros from late 96 on. Just kinda kills the overall vibe and bothers anyone who knows better like myself.

Cant believe how long and boring Bret vs The Undertaker was I was so hyped for that match too but Summerslam 1997/One Night Only more than made up for it
2 babyfaces is usually, or at least used to be, a hard match to pull. If you notice Bret heeled it up a little in this match as it is what it needed.
@@ymca4547 the fans were 60/40 behind Bret at the start, mid match it became 50/50, and by the end it was like 80/20 in favor of Taker, and they switched up the face/heel dynamic from start to finish. Seemed like it was on the fly which was cool to watch

I don't know why Conrad referred to Austin being eliminated early as a rumor, I'm pretty sure I heard Austin saying in some interview that was in fact what happened

Always wondered how far he'd have taken it if he'd stayed..... Especially as Austin's gimmick wouldn't have felt so fresh when it started evolving a few months later.

It was a good build for diesel vs undertaker but damn they did it again month later again bret looked weak in that title reign......everybody knew shawn Michaels was gonna beat bret at mania.....couldve still build taker vs diesel without makin bret look weak shit he was the damn champion.....bret couldve beat taker with a roll up after taker being distracted by diesel then month later they couldve had the tag match they had at that house show bret and shawn vs taker and diesel at in your house......with diesel attacking everybody including shawn🤷♂️.....still good events tho
