- Sara Drew, a conservator at Center Art Studio in New York City, explains how she restored a 180-year-old painting. Henry Wilkin's portrait of English opera singer Madame Lucia Elizabeth Vestris has accumulated thick layers of dirt and tobacco smoke on the surface after hanging in a Manhattan social club for years. The painting also has paint loss due to overcleaning by the last person who restored it and has tears that need to be repaired. Sara walks us through the steps of the restoration and reveals the finished restoration.

This was both calming and breathtaking at the same time. Imagine yourself saying, "I'm going to strip the varnish off this 200-year-old painting, and out it back together like new." She did this as just another day at the office, NBD. Just amazing.
At the end when it's revealed how beautiful the painting looks after the restoration is complete, it really displays the beauty of the woman in the painting, and the way she smiling at the end, it's almost like she's saying "thank you". 😊

I'm mainly impressed that she can take her work home. You'd think this kind of procedure would be taking place in a secure facility, not in this woman's living room.
I imagine she was working at a facility prior to lockdown. Most videos you see of artwork restoration, they take place in a studio.
painting in private possession don´t have the restriction of keeping them in secure places. but im also kinda horrified that she is using health damaging chemicals in place intended for living.
Thats becuz of the how valuable the piece is, im pretty sure high value paintings are done elsewhere

@@cez_is_typing we had windows open in every restoration studio that i worked in but the chemical fumes will seep into the fabrics and walls, even when i changed my clothing you could still smell it from my hair. i would compare it to cigarette smoke- when someone is smoking inside regularly even with windows open, the smell still remains.

This lady is a saint. What a noble thing to dedicate yourself to. It seems like such an awesome responsibility
People comparing her to Baumgartner and screaming about the "isolation later" obviously did not listen well to her and finish the video. The isolation layer is a method of preference. And is more practical in paintings with damage that covers a large area. In paintings with minor damage in smaller areas, it is not practical. Don't fix what isn't broken. As much as possible do not layer over any areas that do not need work. And since she is is already using conservator specific material, which is REVERSIBLE, the isolation layer isn't necessary.
Restoration/Conservation isn't a one track science. Different restorers use different methods and different preferences. You see people complaining about her working in her living room and not in a proper studio with lighting and ventilation? Well you guys have never experienced working on 16 saint statues in a make shift studio in a musty old convent because we cannot transport fragile 150 yr old wooden statues in risk of damaging them. Everything in the environment will ofc have to be adjusted and controlled, especially the temperature and humidity. But any space, as long as it meets the restoration needs, can be used. Baumgartner has his extensive work studio. Good for him. This lady has her living room studio. Good for her. Artists work with what they have and what they're comfortable with.
Please don't act like uppity art critics when your comments show how narrow your exposure is.
Thank you for this comment 🍻
