- Sara Drew is a professional art conservator who will be walking us through the restoration of a 125-year-old oil painting and its original frame. The painting is a portrait of Edmund Holland by Willard Leroy Metcalf from 1895. Sara will go through the details of five layers of cleaning that need to happen to restore this painting and the meticulous attention to detail she needs to have to ensure that it's done correctly. She'll also be responsible for patching any tears and rips and retouching any areas where paint has been lost.

She did an amazing job by the way...

Baumgartner is like a modern day sophistication of the art restoration industry. Stripping all the fancy studio equipment, cinematic framing of the footages and the drama of Julian's voice over, its just Sara Drew's same work. both are absolutely intensive and impressive indeed.
You can tell she was inspired by him. 🤗

I don't know if anyone would be interested but on Khan academy there is whole "chapter" about restoration in subject art history. It's one youtube video per lesson but from there you can find more art channels with more restoration. Aaaaaand it's for free and you don't even need an account

I've never read the comments in videos like these. It's so heartwarming to see Julian being mentioned so often and being appreciated. I hope he is well liked by his peers too. I've never met him but I'm feeling a little proud.

Ha ha apart from the guy doing the patches with one big square. I was like ‘ick, Julian would have traced that hole and cut out a tiny patch to fit just the hole’.
Her voice is absolutely terrible and only made more annoying by the low quality audio. Insider needs to get it together, either learn how to do a "tape sync" like every other publication or just don't bother.

Restorer in 2120 - "This painting was restored by some other restorers, and they for some reason decided to use water based putty, which is odd considering that now we use nano-particles to let the painting heal itself"
hahaha i was thinking this. beautiful work but to poop on the previous restorer so much was silly. they have heat activated linen patches lmao.

Nah, they have studied and practiced a lot. The problem is when you get a task you don't know how to do.
Actually no matter how much you study you still get a little stressed because you have to be extremely careful there are so many scenarios that can happen and it requires a lot of patience. There have been many occasions where even senior restorers with a lot of experience have seriously messed up.

I wish there was a way for the artists to know how hundreds of years after their death, their works of art are still being cared for and restored to their original vision.

As a future conservator i feel terror and satisfaction while watching these kind of videos... I'm in my first semester in university and I'm still learning the basics.
Edit: I am in second semester and i love the university. Although we have web classes i still managed to love them. It is really interesting as a subject and it saddened me that i did know it earlier.
Edit 2: It's the finals of the second semester and the university is one of the best things in my life so far. And all the subjects are really interesting as time passes by.
Edit 3: Now finals of the 4th semester, one hour before art exams. This semester was the most exciting one because the subjects were amazing and all my personal life turned 180, now i feel great. I love what i do more and i get more creative every day. I love this university. Still 2 more years to go!☺️
P.s: I have to say that i still feel terror while i have to deal with works of art but I've learned that this is okay.

Indeed. Both have their own methods and styles. Both get different types of paintings..both have different ways of doing videos and both have different education levels,experiences and knowledge. You can’t really compare them.

I'm always so amazed at how much the original varnishes can darken and yellow with time. You don't realize how much of the detail has been lost until it's gone through a restoration process like this.
Conservator: focuses on preserving the original artwork
Restoration: restoring a piece back to its original form and function
The patience, detailing and the skill.. And considering the pressure of being an invaluable art piece, the calm. She is incredible. Hope my child grow up well like her.
I restored an original Rembrandt drawing with about two inches of damaged surface, seen the end result and the client's approval is truly rewarding to say the least, thanks for the video brought back memories of adrenaline running moments, you have a beautiful studio and a great team! Congratulations!
None of us will ever see or care. there was another comment about someone who restores and what they cared about is what the customer wanted. focus on that rather than youtubers

The man in the canvas looks a lot like the actor Charles Dance. I find restoration work fascinating - it appeals to my love of art, history, and of science all in one package. All of you have such talent and dedication to your art. Amazing work!

Jeez, I hate that there are people out there who keep calling themselves Baumgartner fans and keep comparing people to him in every single restoration/conservation video. It's exhausting and frankly quite tacky. The majority of us are not professionals in the field, and the little we know has been filtered through the lens of that one man. The methods he uses are neither unique to him, nor are they infallible. I don't understand how people can consider him so precious to the point of basically badgering everyone else with his name!
The same way, I can't understand those who come to disparage him and his reputation. Criticism aside, some people just keep throwing shade and not stating facts as to why he's not well-regarded. Don't just dish it out, bring out the receipts. At the end of the day, his work is fully reversible.

Sara the conservator: I use a small tacking iron to iron down the edges.
Baumgartner fan: So you don't have a heated vacuum table.... hmmm.
But really they did an excellent job.
they need to get that table. the canvas is not flat, you can see the light bending in awkward ways.
I'm glad that this profession has got more exposure!
It is amazing how to restore one painting, there are SO MANY things to be done.
And it is amazing they have a whole TEAM to do this ❤️ it shows that every single aspect is handled by a professional ❤️

I just used the same sponge for dry cleaning a sampler piece at my museum :) its crazy how much grime it can pick up!

Having watched Julian (Baumgartner), i was able to interpret what she was doing in much more depth and also notice differences in approach.
they did an incredible job of restoration, on both that beautiful frame and the impressive portrait, which is truly captivating. i would have liked to see much more of the retouching, which is invisible to the eye - so well painted. thank you much. 🌷🌱

Great vid! And great work. Only thing I'd say to people, is to not shine UV light on your skin like that - wear gloves! And ideally, safety glasses that protect from UV.

This is so cool! I've always wondered how oil paintings are restored. I like all aspects of art, I've been sketching, drawing, and painting since I was just a few years old.

Started out sounding like she came from the same as Baungartner and the narration was almost exactly what he says. I thought she did well, but was less than please by the owner’s work. The frame looked fab and the retouching was great. 💕🐝

Just purchased a painting by Curt Meyer-Eberhardt and a painting by Harry Craig Smith, through an auction. Both paintings are exciting by these notable artists. No matter what is done in these other restorations I will always have the baumgartner institute as my place of reference. They did a great job.

The Baumgartner fandom can be pretty toxic sometimes!
As an art conservator myself, I find some of this comments so funny just for the fact that most of them come from people that watched a couple of videos and now they act like pros.
I think much of it comes from not realizing how many ways there are to skin a cat so to speak. In addition, many professionals have certain preferences on how they do things and this causes then to create a false dichotomy between right and wrong. People need to realize that the process of conserving anything is unique to each item and the demands/expectations of the client.
Honestly true. Question, genuinely what do you think of Baumgartner's conservation methods? Is he doing a fine job? The end results looks fine for me but I'm not a conservator so idk how to asses his methods.
They have like 5 people on 1 painting yet in Baumgartner, there's only 1 people doing all the stuff.. They're doing a very nice job tough 👏👏👏
