Case 580E King Pin and Bearing Replacement

  • I knew something looked odd about the king pin the day I bought this backhoe... One day I was pushing around dirt for about an hour and then parked the machine. I checked things over after parking it and noticed a huge gap now between the axle housing and king pin. There used to be a thick shim (incorrectly) hammered in there. Comparing it to the other side and service literature, there's supposed to be a LOT more in there. Out of two cover plates, two o-rings, two snap rings, three bearings, two thrust plates, and one seal, there was only one plate and a snap ring remaining! 2/12 parts! Somehow there was enough metal left in the housing to firmly press the new bearings into place.
    I made the mistake of not lining up the king pin to install the lock pin (locks the king pin to the spindle). I will be keeping an eye on it after each use to catch it when it lines up as it rotates some while in use.
    All in all, the repair was a success!

    great video!! I would say as we mechanics grow old we learn much in the way of methods and more importantly TOOLS. Some advice ( if you dont mind) One I would have broke loose the tie rod end and Steering cylinder end before starting the job. You can always snug them up if you need to but its akin to loosening Lug nuts before you jack a vehicle. Another, get your self a few brass punches for when you hit the threaded ends of things you might want to reuse or salvage also when your pushing those seals around in the end. Last Get yourself a 5 pound leather mallet or rubber sand filled hammer. They do wonders to help tap things into place and don't mar the surfaces. As you get older tapping with the palm of your hand actually can hurt your hand ( sucks to get old!! But its also a privilege to ) Lots of good information These old machines run forever with a bit of mechanic work!!!

    I have to have a 580E that I have completely restored. I stumbled on to something called a Gouger. I had a very frozen pin on the bottom of one of my outrigger pads that I needed to remove & repair the leaking cylinder on. The Gouger is very inexpensive tool at $65.00 that uses your welder with a carbon rod and high pressure air. Compared to the tools I destroyed trying to get that pin out its cheap and does the job in minutes and melts the pin out. I have before and after pictures if your interested. I like your channel and as a Subscriber I admire your ingenuity to repair problems you have never encountered before. Keep up the good work. Dave Trotter

      Thanks for this re gouger. I had the same problem with my 580E lower outrigger pin as well and used a sawzall and cutting torch to remove it. All I saw for alternatives was an oxylance at $900, well out of my range. IF you have pics you can add here, that would be awesome.

    We have a Case 580c with the same problem in one wheel. Someone has had it apart and welded the top plate in place. It is now out but we will be trying to remove the bolt that keeps the king pin from turning next. From watching the video we did not know the kingpin was pressed in. That will make it tough to remove so we might have to either torch it in half or cut it out with a sawsall. Good video. I could never have kept my mouth shut that long without swearing on the camera.

      Glad it helped! On the note of the kingpin, it isn't pressed in. There's an issue with these that sit outside and get rained on. Where the kingpin lock-bolt goes through the knuckle, there is no seal. Water is able to seep through the gaps and get to the kingpin itself, then the water causes the kingpin to rust in place and seize such as mine did. I didn't film it, but during reassembly the new kingpin slid right into place by hand, it "floats" as long as the lock-bolt isn't installed. I did opt to apply silicone around the lock-bolt to seal it to the knuckle to prevent water intrusion in the future.

      LOL, I would have done some swearin' also. Any time I cut steel, especially hard steel like a king pin, I keep the sawzall blade well oiled. The blades last a lot longer. A grinder with a cut off wheel is the way to go if you have to cut it.

    Not a bad job. Keep the old machines running. I just bought a 1978 case 480c last month. Rebuilding the engine and the front end now.

    always use very thick . also grease on the cir clips before you install them it makes them easier to remove later on when you need to service the king pins again , also apply some grease to the top of that thick cover to protect the cir clip and plate from rusting to each other

    Excellent vid. Thanks for this. My steering stalls on my 580E with the bucket is loaded, and I'm hoping its not king pins, but half suspecting it could be binding.

      Could be. I learned with mine if the loader is at full capacity and the tires are squatting (not fully inflated), it will also stall unless I'm already rolling.

      @@fixaday mine appears to have been poorly torqued axle bearing and low pressure inthe tires, bot fixed and seems to be much happier. And a lot of grease for the king pins too! Fingers crossed.

    First off: Thanks for making the video, lots of work there.. Question for you: In the beginning of the video that wheel was spinning very freely.. like when you spun it, it kept spinning. So wouldnt that mean the wheel bearings were functioning as they should ? What made you decide to replace the wheel bearings ? Thanks!

      Hi Joel. The wheel bearings were indeed functional for the moment, but they were loose from wear and had a loud rumbling while rolling. The rumbling comes from pitting of the rollers/races. Eventually this leads to metal fatigue and increased contamination. The contamination leads to more wear, and it continues to snowball from there.

      @@fixaday Okay, got it, thanks for getting back to me. I asked because I have been working with a 580C, and have to replace one of the kingpins (Big Job). My wheels do not free-spin NEARLY as much as yours did. I figure while I have everything apart I might as well do the wheel bearings as well. I am hoping that when they are back on and fresh they will free spin smoothly.

      No problem. It’s possible that the spindle nut is over tightened or there is no lubricant in the hubs, but either way, you’re right. It’s best to check it over now rather than later since you’re already there!

    Is it me or does anyone else think that he put that seal on backwards the bottom seal from my experience the lip goes inside that way the grease will continuously try to push the seal outwards towards the piece of casting that it's in keeping the seal nice and tight and around the shaft keeping the seal nice and tight

    Can someone tell me what the tool is called that was used to install the bearing into the shaft housing? I just got a 580C and replaced the front wheel bearings. That tool looks like it would come in very handy at some point, unfortunately.

    hmm thrust bearing on the top? i'm doing my ford backhoe now and my thrust bearing goes on the bottom of the knuckle. Good job!

      @@fixaday one side, the king pin had fallen/broke off about 30 years ago and my dad and his friend bent a huge bolt and jammed it in. It wasn't a good fit, so obviously that side is a little sloppy now, bearings/spacers, everything was gone. When I jacked the machine up, I had so much slop up and down and left and right it was crazy. I found the king pin kit from an ebay UK user so figured i'd do both sides, along with new steering cylinders (mine always leaked). I got the sloppy side off no problem (didn't even need to use a hammer, but all my tie rods were so gone i had to torch off the nuts). Then On the "good" side, the bearing was gone along with spacers, so I had about 3/4" of up down space, I jacked the knuckle all the way up, and used the torch and cut the king pin off above axle, then lowered it and cut it below axle. Took the knuckle and hub off, now I have to try and beat out the king pin from the axle. Took me 2 hours today to get the lock pins out (heating up axle with torch and beating them out with air hammer and bfh). I'm hoping with some heat and making some kind of a jig to hold a punch bolt, i'll be able to whack the pin out of the axle. We shall see!

      It’s so easy to make temporary fixes to get things going again, but that’s testament to just spending the time and fixing it right the first time. That sounds like as much of a headache as I went through with mine, I hope it goes well too!

      Thrust bearing on top if kingpin bearings are on the crossbar. Kingpin wedged to the spindle. Thrust bearing on bottom if kingpin bearings on spindle. King pin wedged to the crossbar.

    Please wear safety glasses.You are beating on cast iron with a sledgehammer without safety glasses. Fragments shoot out like bullets. My friend has one eye from hitting a bucket with a hammer.And you should use blocking under that front axle, that jack could slip out any second

    I curious how long was you kingpin messed up before you did your repairs? I have the same problem?

      I bought the backhoe without knowing it had been poorly patched back together, but I personally had approximately 20-30 hours of use in that state.

      Negative, I tried plenty throughout the process. I tried it cold, quenched while hot, gave hours to penetrate, no results. It simply needed a lot of force due to the rust. If yours hasn’t been out and exposed to southeastern US weather it’s entire life, you’ll be in a tremendously better position.

    Please dont do what you see him do folks . Uou don't hammer on the threaded end of a bolt. His backhoe swing tower bushing replacement video was unsafe with no clwR support.

      That is correct, but in this case the thrust force is supported by a thrust bearing rather than washer, a ball bearing. It does use thrust washers, but their function here is to shim the knuckle to remove end play.
