The New Statesman's political corresepondent, Freddie Hayward, was in Brussels to cover the latest National Conservative conference, and was one of the first to report from the scene when police attempted to shut the event down on the orders of the local mayor.
Freddie tells Anoosh Chakelian and Rachel Cunliffe that the Mayor's decision provided Nigel Farage and the hard right attendees including Victor Orban and Eric Zemmour with perfect ammunition to make their case that the EU is trying to censor free speech.

Like it or not, the mayors actions were discraceful
All the best Anoosh!
Congrats Anoosh. All the best to yourself and your family.
Congratulations, Anoosh and best of luck with everything.
I'm not a fan of Nigel Farage BUT this is very (or should be) worrying that Free Speech is under attack from so many angles. Who's Next?
Farage has a TV channel to Spaff his bile. Tough
@@californiadreamin8423 That's not how freedom-of-speech works. You don't just get to arrest someone because you think they've already had enough exposure for their bad ideas.
Congratulations Anoosh!
The mayor of brussels shouldn't be silencing them, despite their (horrible views).
Congrats Anoosh! Good luck!
Congratulations, best wishes Anoosh
I giggled at "Nigel Farage was gleeful..." at the police turning up. 😁
Anoosh army rise up 🙌🙌
Take care Anoosh :)
What they made their Brexit and they came back into EU, weird move !🤔
Good luck Anoosh x
Have a lovely maternity leave❤
If forage was there, there was no problem with food.
I am sicked at all the coverage Farage, Trump, Boris, Mogg get, the media is feeding them
Jacob Rees Mog does not want to be leader of the Party !
Is the Mayor related to Hitler
Now we see the violence inherent in the system!
"Help, help.I am being oppressed!"
Rollocks to wrexit🎉
Free Sam Melia!
Free speech for all.
Good luck on maternity leave Anoosh! Maybe you'll get the chance to bring your baby into the studio(or a zoom chat)😀
People have different opinions, get over it
It's not just "different opinions" when said "opinions" are portrayed as facts or used as political talking points to affect referendums or elections. It's exactly how dictators eventually grab power. Shocking how this needs to be explained in this day and age.
Far left radical mayor shuts down conference
We also have pyjama judges who are on duty in cases of emergency.
The Scottish government hasn't clamped down on political opions.
Unionist groups have organised a complaints campaign.
Count the prosecutions not the number of false complaints.
First ❤
The majority of Brits agree with Suella and Forage, as I do, and we're not hard right. We just believe in true democracy and free speech!
‘Forage’ has stood as an MP seven times and failed seven times so I think your assessment may be faulty.
Interesting.
Almost a super majority for Rejoining the EU, majority of Brits have seen through these Brexit clowns.
No we do not, Ivan.
It's shameful that Farage ever went to Europe in any capacity for the UK. Going in any political context is a failure and really sad.
Voters in the UK elected him to represent them. That's democracy.
can anyone explain to me why you like farage? i'm not closed to your opinions if you would live to divulge
Congratulations Anoosh!
