George Eaton edited the list and joins Hannah Barnes and Freddie Hayward on the New Statesman podcast to discuss who's up, who's down, and what their influence means for the general election.
Hannah, Freddie and George also discuss the latest events from the general election campaigns including Vaughan Gethin's confidence vote, more questionable Tory donations and Ed Davey's moving campaign video.

The Walkers' Crisps man is the icon of the British Left?
The Overton Window in England is insane.
Tbh, as a dedicated lefty for a while, and become more reasonable with age, yes its pretty nuts atm. Got labour being the tories, and the torys and reform fighting over the MAGA/reform slot
Have you got a condition that stops you from using proper nouns?!
He is more well known in the UK for leading the main BBC football programme so he gets a lot of publicity and credibility from that.
I think he has lost that to Beckham and Henry now.
Everyone is an austerity loving Thatcherite except the Greens now.
Bit of a surprise if you remember the 70s but here we are.
Thatcher wasn't in power till 1979
The 1970s passed her by-Thatcherism started in the 1980s.
@@FranzBieberkopf Don't you believe it. I was one of the kids who had their milk stopped by Thatcher the Milksnatcher when she was Education Secretary in the early seventies. An early marker of austerity, methinks.
Not the SNP though😀
@FranzBieberkopf Not at all true. She was in Heath's cabinet and rather quickly took over the party in the mid-70s. Thatcherism, not unlike Reaganomics, was just a localised term for neoliberalism.
@@tulyar57 It wouldn't have hurt you to have tea.
Just remember, Sunak couldn't actually be bothered to go to the Omaha Beach commemorations with all the other world leaders.
Not a great look, Richy!
Were the other world leaders at Gold or Sword beach? If not, why should Sunak be present at Omaha? I’m no fan of the government but this D-Day thing has been blown well out of proportion.
Crikey! Sunak, Cameron, Starmer and Lammy are in Normandy? Hope they don't jump on a boat to get back to Blighty; they may end up in Rwanda!
sunak bailed on it, he couldn't even get that right.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
With little Engine Rishi Sunak as captain of the ship ,it's possible 😂😂😂😂
It's not Lineker. He plays Centre Forward.
John Barnes or Chris Waddle are better left wing options.
"We've covered Wales well I think" he says after one of the panelists admitted to only hearing about the whole Vaughan Gething debacle THIS MORNING. Do you ever think maybe this sort of arrogance is part of why so many people want a split with England?
We need Wales to sea that we all got the same issue. They won't give up their political power. Won't fully implement brexit. Robbing us blinds. So we gotvto Vote Reform UK. In an attempt to transfer power back to our hands from the political, globalist elites. The hardest blow we can. I'm sorry, I know you feel like we are crap. It just took a while wake up. We are all on it x stay strong. Spread the word ❤
Yeah damn, I hope they never specialise, that would be awful.
These 3 people look like they represent a very small demographic. Not representative of any English people I know.
The left? Don't you mean centre right liberal
None of these people are left wing in this “left wing” list.
This is a list of mostly centrist. Bonkers how far right this country has moved
Power on the left??? now? - dream on eh!
Twitter even main stream broadcasters are savaging Sunaks lie. Even times radio has had to fact check and acknowledge it.
Amusing they mention Sunak returning "in the afternoon" from Normandy, without batting an eyelid about it. The same breed are obviously employed by Tory HQ. Plonkers anonomous a go go. This country, may the good Lord help it!!
Vaughan Gething just comes across as very strange. He's got a weird personality.
I never knew that Tory lite apologists were left wing
Power is only given to those who are prepared to lower themselves to pick it up.
-Ragnar Lothbrok TV series.
I clicked to find who was powerful in the Left, and it was all figures from the Right!
Starmers tactic to win the leadership was to lie his face off
There is no left . The NS is in no way left
The New Statesman is so keen on being Tory.
To paraphrase Liam Byrne:
“Dear chief secretary, I'm afraid to tell you there's no left”
A bit quieter that aged well 😂
Angela Rayner is the only person you mentioned (in Labour) that I would say was on the left. Starmer got the leadership under false pretences and has lied about everything ever since. I can't stand him. And now he's saying he's going to stop the boats! Whey does he have to come out with all this tory bs when he's going to win a landslide? We need PR now. The only hope is that once he gets in he might do a bit more than he's saying. I'm just so effing depressed
Currently, the left in this election is not represented by Labour, but by a diverse scattering of independents and the Greens. They all receive little coverage, so post this election the 'left' will be underrepresented. . Labour by moving to the right to attract moderate Conservatives has alienated a significant portion of its base, (The treatment of Abbott and others has also alienated many.)
When Labour win the election, they will find that votes borrowed are less dependable than the core support that they have alienated. The honeymoon period may be very short given the mess they are inheriting. Next May, they may be the Party losing hundreds of Council seats.
Very surreal to hear these guys talking about politics like it's a fantasy football game. Also very telling that barely any of the people he listed were actually left leaning. To be clear on just how fucked his "left" power list is: Wes Streeting is #8 and JK Rowling is #25. Utterly and completely fucked.
Might be misreading this but I'm not sure that Freddie was particularly into it?
Is Morgan Mcsweeney related to the actress from Derry girls?
No Gordon Brown?
That would mean somewhat a fightback against pure thatcherite econmics, keir cant be having that.
It's honestly amazing seeing how these people are described as left wing almost as if they can't admit to themselves they're Tories in disguise 🥸🥸🥸
Don't count your chickens before they hatch. You may regret it.
Yep I think you are right.🐓
The UN does.
I honestly feel dumber and less informed after this
George Galloway, what a load os nonsense!
is tony blair on the list? TBI?
Having anyone from neoliberal Labour on the left power list is laughable😂
In my overton window most of these people(starmer reeves) aren't left wing.
If i hear one more tory mp state that Rishi Sunak is a stickler for Details and a Very Patriotic man i will need a new tv , if he was patriotic he would not have disrespected the WW2 heroes in front of the world press and if he had been a details man he would have known what the British general public would think about him leaving early to further his political career. There has been a rash of posts hinting that Rishi is not British or a patriot, i know he was born in England so he is English i don't believe he is Patriotic since he kept his green card and his wife had non dom status while he was in government. I must admit i had a little chuckle when i saw james O'Brien sticking up for Rishi because racists were questioning his Britishness, Rishi has fanned the flame of racism with his illegal migrants rable rousing
Defining Palestine left or right
Is political blindness
The murders are a matter of
Humanity
People are not be very interested in comings and goings in Wales, true. It may be because 200,000 is smallbeer at the side of what the tories in Westminster get up tol
7:32 Rachel Reeves polled at No1 last year and yet Starmer us not top of the stack in 2024 despite being leader of one of the largest potential Labour majorities in electoral history. Do I detect faint leadership rumblings a year hence?
No, just an acceptance that keir is a puppet that morgan mcsweeney forced into power. His plan is pretty well documented, he chose keir as his face man, without him starmer never wins.
even the stupid tory in the middle didnt see the backlash coming - he knew rushi wasnt saying and couldnt see an issue - another out of touch tory
I've listened to a few episodes of _The Rest is Politics_ produced by Lineker. But its analysis is sorely lacking compared to this podcast. They seem stuck in a bubble of their own making, with little understanding of other people's views.
I think Alastair Campbell's entire take on the Scottish Hate Bill was something like _"I don't see what all the fuss is about. Hate is bad. Anyone who objects to this is obviously just waging a culture war."_
I mean at least sex hair Harry is back at it again!
In case you didn't know, Britain isn't a state of the United States. They lost the war, but not to that extend.
P.S. no need to thank me. Thank my history teacher.
I have never visited the United States, but have been in Great Britain.
I think I’ve heard enough political dribble on TH-cam. Thanks for the enlightenment. 👋
Aitch-Q, not Haitch-Q.
Labour record is better on economy, immigration,Healthcare, socialcare, aftercare, social security,
People don't like it when you say that despite the fact if you consider it objectively it is 100% factual.
People
Were George and Freddie born with silver Spoon's or something 😂
The Chinese obviously
Die Juden?
Rather racist?
Does anybody, except just possibly the people who write such guff, take any of these "Power Lists", "100 most important somethings" drivel seriously?.
It's identical to the Rich List in the Sunday Times-crap to fill in the spaces between the adverts.
The people who write this gibberish have grossly inflated self-importance-just listen to this nonsense and try to take it seriously😊
Really want to listen to your podcasts as there is a lot of interesting information but do you realize how you come across? Self-satisfied and morally entitled - because you are on the left, like the Guardian on steroids. Please - less of the Oxbridge and more straightforward discussion. I couldn’t finish listening to this even though I wanted to!
Lets face it a vote for Labour is like turkeys voting for Christmas. Starmer, Abbott, Lammy, Miliband and Thornberry are more frightening than Putin! Vote Reform
He he.
I'd rather have them than any of the tories that have led us to where we are today, but hey it's still a democratic country (albeit less so since 2010), vote to keep the grifters in power, then you will truly get more of the same. Realistically your choice is starmer or sunak. And don't forget the longer the tories go on, the more right wing they become.
No chance
Where's Anoush?
