The fact is, your maxilla (upper jaw bone) only grows forward until the age of 10-12, after that it is fixed in place forever in your life, I believe this device attempts to push the bone forward but since the bone stopped growing at their age, all front teeth are pushed outward instead, expanding the space between tooth roots and bone, causing every teeth to be mobile, it is irreversible and even the most skillful dentist can't save the teeth

This just breaks my heart. After 3 years of braces followed by bridge work, permanent retainers, wearing removable retainers every night and going to my dentist, orthodontist and periodontist, who all worked together, I’m very pleased with the result. But clearly, this device looks like braces in reverse. Looking at the mirror everyday, it can sometimes be hard to see movement but clearly after seeing how crooked their teeth were becoming, I’m surprised they didn’t stop the process MUCH sooner. It did nothing for their jawline but was ruining their teeth and bones. It’s a shame.

It is also dreadfully expensive and it's a nightmare this man marketed and helped sell. Why is the device still being sold in this country? Could doctors do this and continue working? Why hasn't the government shut this dangerous scam and those marketing, selling, and manufacturing it down yet?

After being severely damaged myself by a tooth-anchored expansion device and knowing about these side effects for a decade, it's surreal to watch this CBS report! Also funny that the interviewer seemed horrified at the potential loss of 8 teeth. I lost 8 teeth, an orthodontist ripped out 4 premolars and shoved my jaws even further back while a dentist later ripped out 4 non-impacted wisdom teeth. This caused life long breathing problems, a recessed face, damaged teeth, and TMJ. The cognitive dissonance is predictable because it protects the status quo, but since there are potentially millions of people who experienced what I have I really wish CBS would do a report about that.

Same. Every single dentist should be telling young patients about proper tongue posture so their jaws grow forward properly and are wide enough to hold all the teeth and prevent all these complications such as narrowed airway, TMJ, neck/back pain, mental health issues, etc. But of course, they won't make money that way. The whole thing is an absolute sham.

Any woodwind player should think twice about doing any dental treatment beyond routine restorative work. The reason I have never gotten braces is because I don't want to relearn how to play the oboe. I am a general dentist btw. Remember Chet Baker and think twice

How could anyone think they could grow new bone in their jaw?? How did they not know their teeth were moving??
I am losing all faith that we are the most intelligent species. Use some common sense, people!!

I'm in the story. I posted concerns in the Facebook group to the dentists saying it felt like my teeth were moving. They flat out said "we are not moving your teeth, we are remodeling the bone forward." When I asked why my teeth felt loose I was told because of the bone remodeling and it was normal. We were all sharing our photos and stories, as were the dentists. We weren't hearing any horror stories until slowly we were.

@@LeighPeterson330 That's so sad. What monsters. I thought dentists were pretty good people, but they should have known that you cannot grow new bone like that. I'm so sorry there is not better oversight on dental appliances.

I'm sorry, but when you go to a dentist who tells you they can "GROW YOUR JAW," and that a thing that is set up to their teeth forward - literally - is not going to push your teeth forward and outward, AND YOU SEE IT PUSHING YOUR TEETH OUTWARD, and EVEN THEN, YOU STILL DO NOT GO TO ANOTHER DENTIST TO GET A SECOND OPINION (!!!???!!!????!!!!), I'M SORRY, BUT, DO YOU NOT GET WHAT YOU, KIND OF, WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN WHAT YOU'D GET?!?!?
●● WHY, IN GOD'S NAME, ANYONE - ESPECIALLY ONE WHO HAS A CAREER THAT DEPENDS UPON HER MOUTH AND JAW PLACEMENT - WOULD NOT GET A SECOND OPINION, AT THE VERY LEAST, IS BEYOND ME!!! WHY, ON EARTH, FOR F'S SAKE, ANYONE WOULD BELIEVE A DENTIST WHO TELLS YOU THEY CAN "GROW YOUR JAW" - AND THESE ARE ALL ADULTS - IS BEYOND ME! I WOULDN'T HAVE BELIEVED ANYONE WHO TOLD ME THAT WHEN I WAS 10 YEARS OF AGE; BUT IF I HAD A CAREER THAT DEPENDED UPON MY JAW PLACEMENT AND TEETH, I WOULD GET 3 PROFESSIONAL OPINIONS AND DO RESEARCH ON EVERY PROCEDURE I WAS HAVING, EVEN AFTER THE OPINIONS, JUST TO MAKE SURE I KNEW WHAT I WAS GETTING INTO!
IF ANY OF THESE ADULTS HAD EVEN GOOGLED (WHICH, BTW, IS NOT "DOING RESEARCH"), JUST SIMPLY GOOGLED THE QUESTION, "IS IT POSSIBLE TO GROW THE JAW OF AN ADULT HUMAN," OR CHECKED THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU, OR THE FDA, OR, MY GOD, ASKED ANY INTELLIGENT LOOKING PERSON ON THE STREET, THEY WOULDVE SEEN THAT WHAT THAT DENTIST WAS SAYING WAS UTTER CRAP!
    ● The ONE MAJOR QUESTION IN MY MIND, HOWEVER, IS THAT, ONCE SHE'S SEEING A GAP BARELY BEGINNING TO FORM IN HER ONCE STRAIGHT TEETH, ONCE SHE'S SEEING HER ONCE STRAIGHT TEETH EVEN BEGINNING TO FLARE OUT LIKE THAT ( BUT WHICH, LET'S FACE IT, THAT'S WHAT, LOOKING AT THE DEVICE, IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL DO, WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE ITS SUPPOSED TO DO, IF YOU LOOK AT THE FACT THAT IT'S SET UP - ON. THE. TEETH. - AND NOT ONT THE JAW BONE...I MEAN, BRACES WORK BECAUSE THE JAW DOES NOT MOVE. - THATIS WHY/HOW YOU CAN STRING WIRE THROUGH DEVICES ATTACHED TO THE TEETH, AND TIGHTEN, LOOSEN, ETC., SAID WIRE, TO STRAIGHTEN THE TEETH - BECAUSE THE JAW ITSELF DOES NOT MOVE, AND WILL NOT GROW BY HAVING THE METAL ATTACHED TO THE TEETH PUSHED OR PULLED!!! TO EVEN AJUST THE PLACEMENT OF THE JAW BONES, IN RELATION TO EACH OTHER, "HEAD GEAR" NEEDS TO BE WORN!!! SAID HEAD GEAR IS CONNECTED TO TEETH VIA BRACES, BUT IT DOESN'T "GROW" THE JAW! IT PUSHES AND/OR PULLS THE JAW BONES IN RELATION TO EACH OTHER, TO STRAIGHTEN OR EVEN OUT THE PLACEMENT OF EACH OTHER!!!! THE JAW BONE CANNOT BE "GROWN!!!" NO, I DID NOT RESEARCH THIS! NO, I DID NOT HAVE HEADGEAR. I ONLY HAD BRACES, YEARS AGO, AND HAVE SEEN HEAD GEAR......OH, WELL, I HAVE INTELLIGENCEAND BASIC COMMON SENSE!! WHAT, IN THE HELL, IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!?!?! COME ON!) AND SHE STILL DIDN'T BOTHER TO GO TO ANOTHER DENTIST, EVEN THEN, TO GET A SECOND OPINION?!?!
I mean, I feel sorry for her, and the others, and, YES, CLEARLY, THAT VILE A**H*LE SHOULD BE STOPPED, IMMEDIATELY, but, come on, people!! My word! How much stupidity and UTTER LACK OF ANY COMMON SENSE AT EVERY SINGLE, SOLITARY, POSSIBLE STEP ALONG THE WAY DO PEOPLE GET TO KEEP DISPLAYING AND STILL GET HAVE EVERYONE FEELING AS THOUGH THEY CONTINUE TO DESERVE OUR FULL PITY, AND NOT, INSTEAD, AT SOME POINT, A "COME ON, MAN! HOW STUPID CAN YOU BE? HOW OBVIOUS DOES IT HAVE TO BE THAT YOU'RE NOT GETTING WHAT YOU WERE TOLD YOU WOULD GET BEFORE YOU, POSSIBLY, CONSIDER GETTING A SECOND OPINION?!?!?!?!"

Many of us got second opinions. There is an unfortunate echo chamber of “airway dentistry” where they refer to one another. And there is no way a patient can see that from the outside.
As for your other comments, you should apply that thinking to the story at hand as well, because it’s a short piece and cannot possibly include all the details and what patients tried to do at what time points.
      Your comment is unkind.
(And I don’t understand why you wrote in all capital letters.).
