I love underdogs! The best stories are the odd ducks who no one looks twice at in a crowd. The ones who come out of nowhere and shock the heck out of everybody. It’s the best feeling in the world. On a similar note, I named the runt of the litter I was fostering after Barry Horowitz. The little guy was sickly, underweight, and close to death. Yet, time and time again Barry refused the three count. Barry is now a healthy, happy pooch who hikes with his family on trails all over the US. He truly is the Barry Horowitz of the dog world.💙
Funny how if it were during the Punk/Bryan era, the fans would just have complained that "Austin stole his thunder by helping him out, Foley got BURRRIIEEDD!!" lol
Seeing Shelton Benjamin win that match against Triple H was wild that no one could've thought of. That and a later RAW match he had with Shawn Michaels showed Benjamin can hang with the top guys. Amazing career since and great seeing still going strong in AEW.
Jeff Hardy earning Undertaker's respect in a ladder match on Smackdown. Sure he didn't win, but damn if the roof didn't get blown off the arena when Taker raised his hand after the promo.
Barry Horowitz vs Skip was a great feud. My brother and I witnessed one of their matches during a house show in Quebec City; great chemistry between two amazing workers.
I remember this fued, and it was great at the time. However looking back with hindsight, the way Vince treated Chris Candito shifts this story away from Horowitz's Triumph to Chris Candito's humiliation. If it had been against anyone else, I could look back with fondness upon it. But knowing what I do now...
Nic Nemeth, formerly known as Dolph Ziggler, winning the IC title at no mercy 2016 was a great moment. His career was on the line and the moment he won the match was simply unforgettable. Nic has always been criminally underappreciated and rarely gets the praise he deserves The promo he delivered during the build up was brilliant Full of anger, sadness and determination, it is one of the best baby face like promos of all time.
Jeff Hardy winning the WWE Championship, Daniel Bryan beating Evolution in WrestleMania XXX, and Johnny Gargano becoming the 1st triple crown champion in NXT Takeover New York are my favorite underdog moments.
The Maven elimination was so well booked, and not only on the night, it had weeks of build up, with Taker decimating the Hardys and Matt and Jeff recklessly putting themselves on the line whenever They were breathing. All resulting in this moment.
If you look back at it.. Austin's music hits.. He comes out and distracts the rock.. Fluke 3 count on a roll-up.. Hurricane runs away, WHILE AUSTIN'S MUSIC KEPT PLAYING. There is some revisionist history about it, lol.
@@toptenguy1 I believe even Austin admitted years later that he should have stopped Hurricane & at least raised his hand, to help put over Helms (& rub it into Rock's face), but Helms ran by so fast that Austin was only barely able to give him a hand on the shoulder for like a half a second. The moment itself of Hurricane getting the three was cool, but it could have been much better.
Obviously none of us want that, but why even say it? He just took a break not long ago and if he isn't doing well he says so and reacts accordingly, I don't think we are anywhere near some kind of "burn out" phase. 🤦♂️
On the topic of Maven, the Rumble is always brought up, but I also always thought him beating Taker for the hardcore title a few weeks later was a fun underdog moment. Sure, it gets a bit overshadowed by the Rock's own beef with Taker, but still a fun match, and great pissed off reaction from Taker afterwards. As a bonus suggestion, I'd throw in Too Cool winning the tag titles.
Lol I just left a similar comment. Even with the caveats, I loved that Rock didn't just drape Maven over Taker. For me, seeing Maven crawl over and drape his arm over the Undertaker and the crowd getting more and more excited, the closer Maven got and there was me lost in the moment, thinking that there was no way Maven would ever get a pin over a main eventer and then he did. Brilliant moment
My mind goes to Dolph Ziggler beating Team Authority at Survivor Series 2014. Sure, mainly because of Sting, but it was still a gutsy career-performance by Dolph.
13:30 - excellent juxtaposition, transitioning from a fan's sign that reads "JEFF HARDY = LIFE!", immediately to a picture of Jeff Hardy looking Dead Inside...

Jericho 'beating' HHH for the title on Raw, Jeff Hardy beating HHH for the IC title, Cena almost beating Angle on his debut, Hurricane vs the Rock, Luger beating Hogan (NWO), Davey Boy Smith beating Bret at Wembley, Macho Man winning the title at WM4.
The best thing about underdog is it is the fans that rout for them and how we get them to win as the favorite unlike the company they work for pushing others that we do not want
If anything, Maven beating the Undertaker for the hardcore title, was a bigger underdog moment for me. Yes Taker was above that title and yes the Rock did interfere to spice up his thing with Taker but to see Maven crawl over to and drape his arm over a big time player like that and get the 1-2-3 over him, to beat him for any title, was a moment that stuck with me and for Maven specifically, I rewatch that even more than the Rumble elimination.
Cardona has too many merchandise agreements already in place. There is no financial upside in WWE promoting his likeness. Matt would need to terminate all his current licencing agreements, before TKO would consider negotiations. Vince would have bought those contract, just to bury "Zack" and belittle Matt's indy run.
The Hurricane (Shane Helms) getting his Monday Night Raw win over The Rock was a huge deal when it happened, and it cemented him in a singles role even if it wasn’t for a title.
i really dig Scott Hall giving so much of a rub to the Kid (that little tantrum he threw was [chef's kiss]), but i cant get enough of Mick/Mankind winning against Rock...dude not only had crazy Fan support, but damn-near half the Roster was 'in his corner'...the way Steve Blackman tried to break up a pin, just to be run off by Billy Gunn waving the finger of "DONT you take this fron him!!"; to Steve-friggin-Austin coming in, to make sure the deal was sealed with a chair; to the commentary/mic-work afterward, that still makes me believe that even _I_ could be Champion some day...
I don't see myself ever being a great fan of Miz, but he has earned my respect. He overcame graat adversity from the locker room, but he stuck it through. Scott Hall does deserve praise for trying to get some spotlight on younger talent. When he had his head on straight he was a great asset to any roster. Messed up? Not so much.
I am not a big Miz fan but after learning more about him and his struggle behind the scenes (and his great heel promos) I have nothing but respect for him.
Jeff v Taker ladder match on Raw, one of my favourite matches ever, just as Jeff was starting his singles career and Undertaker really cemented him as a star.
I am definitely partial to Dwayne Gill winning the Light heavyweight championship. For the entire time since I had gotten into wrestling, my father had said how he wanted to see Dwayne Gill win a match because he never won. When it happened, I had been watching in my room. I immediately came out and told my father that not only did Dwayne Gill win a match, but he was now a champion. My father's response was, "I don't believe it!" 😂
Dude, I remembered the Santino match against Umaga completely differently! I thought Santino was holding his own until Umaga used his finisher. I don't remember him winning with interference by Lashley then obtaining a championship. Crazy how memory works.
The Genius v Hulk Hogan for the WWF title. No word of lie it's one of my favourite matches ever haha! The crowd are silent but man do they heat up, The Genius doing cartwheels in the ring, Ventura's excellent commentary, brilliant heel work, and the crowd end stunned. Seriously, check this match out, it's on the yootube. By the way, The Genius aka Leaping Lanny Poffo, was THE Macho Man's younger brother. And won the title, incredible, and most people have never even heard of him.
As someone who watched wrestling as a kid with my great grandma in the 80's and 90's I have to say the one moment that was missed was when the Mulkey brothers actually got a win in Jim Crockett promotions in '87 I believe. That was really a shock considering I don't think i ever saw them win another match even if this match was against fellow jobbers the gladiators.
While it's been covered plenty of times on this channel, I think DDP getting the one up on the NWO, in addition to his victory over Macho Man in a PPV Main Event is my favorite underdog moment.
Ya know, I know a lot of people didn't like the Miz but he gained some respect for sure by even finishing that match, as limited as he may have been.. to get completely KOd and be able to continue is really something. If you have never actually been knocked out by smashing your head on the concrete you might not really get it but you're sooooo disoriented and sometimes hard to remain conscious in the following hour. It's scary, you feel like you have no idea where you are or the people and situation going on around you. I dunno maybe it's just me but I gotta give him a nod for that one. Just like Angle at Summerslam
Mikey Whipwrek when he beat the Sandman for the ECW World Title as I can't remember the whole match but watching the Rise And Fall Of ECW DVD they said he did not have 1 offense move in his move set and yet he already beat *at that point* 1 of ECW Top Stars for the World Title so I belive that deserve a spot in Biggest Underdog wins in Wrestling?
